Gas Above $3.50, Oil Nears $120
2008-04-23 03:00:00
The price of oil and gasoline continue to hit record highs with each passing day and, unfortunately, it doesn’t appear as if there is any possibility of relief in the near future. Today, the price of a barrel of crude oil closed at nearly $120, while the price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline ...
Who Do We Blame for High Gasoline Prices?
2008-04-07 02:20:00
As gasoline prices have increased over the last several years - for example, right now gas prices are 19% higher than what they were one year ago - many Americans have searched high and low to pinpoint who or what is to blame. Is it the evil empire of Big Oil? The Bush Administration ...

Latest CAFE Statistics Show Car Manufacturers Are Making Progress
2008-03-28 01:18:00
While many of us have become increasingly critical of the lack of gas friendly vehicles available to us (just check out many of the posts and comments on this site), it doesn’t mean that the major car manufacturers aren’t trying to make some progress. Based on the latest CAFE statistics, the average gas mileage for new ...

100 Years of Improvement?
2008-03-26 01:04:00
Back in 1908, Ford introduced its groundbreaking Model T - the world’s first affordable motorized vehicle and, for all intents and purposes, the basis of America’s love affair with its cars. It also averaged 17 miles per gallon. Fast forward 99 years to 2007: America’s best selling vehicle is still a Ford (the F-150), is still ...

$5 Gas on the Horizon?
2008-03-25 00:25:00
Many Americans are justifiably worried that the price of gasoline will soon hit $4 a gallon. With gas prices seemingly setting new record highs each day - and we’re still only in March - it appears as if $4 gas this summer is pretty much a foregone conclusion. Is it possible that we’re targeting the wrong ...

I Care More About MPG Than MPH
2008-03-13 01:16:00
Today’s post is less about gas mileage tips or updates on soaring gas prices, and more of a call to action to show that you want car manufacturers to worry more about their vehicles’ gas mileage and less about their vehicles’ zero to 60 time. To that end, I would like to launch the ...

Gas Prices Hit All-Time Record High
2008-03-11 17:24:00
Gas prices hit an all-time high of $3.25 today, breaking the previous record of $3.24 set in May of last summer. To help put this in some perspective, exactly one year ago the national average gas price was $2.56. For you non-math people out there, that constitutes a jump of over 25 percent. In addition to ...

$4 Gas in 2008 - Over 75% Believe It is Likely
2008-03-04 00:45:00
This past summer, as gas prices were hitting an all-time record of $3.24 per gallon, many of us (myself included) wondered if things really could get any worse. After all, over the past four years, gas prices had risen nearly 80 percent, so the madness had to stop at some point right? Unfortunately, it seems as if our questions have been answered, and it appears that things are going to continue to get worse. As of this afternoon, the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline stood at $3.16 per gallon - only nine cents away from breaking the all-time record. That $3.16 is also 26% higher than what we were paying exactly one year ago. There are only three states that are currently reporting state-wide average gas prices below $3 per gallon, the lowest of which (Wyoming) has an average gas price of $2.94. Keep in mind, we’ve just entered March. So, where are we going to go from here? I recently added a poll to Daily Fuel Economy Tip which asked: “...

Higher Gas Prices Beginning to Affect Lifestyle
2008-02-20 17:50:00
Unless you’ve been living in a cave, or have been able to function without the use of a personal vehicle, you’re well aware that the cost of gasoline has skyrocketed over the last couple of years, and is beginning to take a significant bite out of many people’s “discretionary” spending money. Over the past two years, the national average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline has jumped from $2.40 to $3.07. While this 67 cent increase may not seem to hurt you too much when you fill up, over the course of a year, that seemingly insignificant price increase can add up to a lot of lost money. For example, let’s say that you fill up your 12 gallon car once every week. That 67 cent per gallon increase will cost you an extra $8.04 per week, or an extra $418.08 per year. Obviously, the more you have to fill up or the worse gas mileage you get, the more money you’re going to have to spend, but I think you get the general idea. If you̵...

Fuel Efficient Vehicles Dominate Super Bowl Ads. Just Kidding.
2008-02-05 01:08:00
If you’re trying to pitch a new product or put a re-brand your corporation (e.g. from a eco-disaster to one of a more environmental leader), there’s likely no better forum than in a Super Bowl ad. With hundreds of millions of people watching around the world, it’s near impossible to not get your point across. Unfortunately, it looks like the world’s major car manufacturers missed that memo. Out of the 64 commercials shown during the Super Bowl, nine were dedicated to cars, trucks and/or SUVs. Of those nine commercials, exactly one was dedicated to a fuel efficient, hybrid or alternative fuel vehicle. And, oddly enough, that one commercial was for General Motor’s Yukon hybrid. Click here to see the ad. (In GM’s defense, during the pre-game there were several commercials for their Fuel Cell prototype vehicles. Unfortunately, pre-game commercials don’t count.) Now, I suppose for $2.7 million a pop, these car manufacturers are probably goin...

$4 Gas Likely in 2008. Where Have You Heard That Before?
2008-02-01 01:30:00
As the American economy continues to slow (the U.S. economy grew by 0.6% during the 4th quarter, the slowest growth in nearly five years) it looks like consumers are becoming fearful not only of a deep and prolonged recession, but of $4 gasoline as well. According to a recent study by 40mpg.org, 71% of Americans believe that gasoline prices will hit $4 by this coming summer. If you get a chance, I would encourage you to download the entire survey/report from 40mpg’s website because there are a lot of interesting tidbits in the report aside from the aforementioned stat. Regardless, this information isn’t news to Daily Fuel Economy Tip readers. As far back as May 2007, 49% of this site’s visitors were predicting $4 gas for the summer of 2008 . And, oddly enough, back on December 4, I wrote a post regarding a recent survey I had conducted on this site in which 71% of respondents stated they believe gasoline will hit $4 during 2008. It’s easy to see why the tho...

Are Fuel Additives Your Answer to Higher Gasoline Prices?
2008-01-27 00:16:00
As gasoline prices have crept up over the last several years, you’ve probably been seeing more and more advertisements and websites for products that have been “proven” to increase your car’s gas mileage, improve its performance and reduce emissions. As a matter of fact, I’m sure if you look to the right or at the bottom of this post there will links to a couple of those websites on Daily Fuel Economy Tip. (Note: Don’t misconstrue that statement as me telling you to click on those links.  I’m just saying that they’re probably there.) Like many things you find on infomercials and over-promising websites, these gas mileage increasing fuel additives have been met by many consumers with a suspicious eye, and for many of the products, this suspicion is rightfully justified. That being said, there wouldn’t be these commercials and websites if there weren’t people out there who were using the products, so at least some of us ha...

$100 Oil = Continued Pain At The Pump
2008-01-07 01:45:00
It’s finally happened; the price of a barrel of crude oil topped the $100 mark for the first time in history. While it was still able to close the trading day below $100, it’s likely only a matter of days before crude oil closes in triple digits. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that there’s going to be any end to this run up any time soon; OPEC has announced that it might not be able to meet its production quota in the future due to rising world demand, U.S. inventories continue to fall and the transition to other energy sources can be described as moving at a glacial pace, at best. All of this equates to continued upward pressure on the price of crude oil. In turn, this means we’re going to continue to see higher and higher gasoline prices. In the past week, the average price of gasoline has jumped over eight cents, and now stands at $3.10 per gallon. In contrast, the average price per gallon was a little over $2.30 one year ago. According to GasBuddy...

Sub-$3 Gas, We Hardly Knew You

So much for the national average price of gasoline being able to stay under $3 for an extended period of time. Sub-$3 Gas, We Hardly Knew You
2008-01-01 15:02:00
So much for the national average price of gasoline being able to stay under $3 for an extended period of time. Thanks to another run-up in the price of crude oil, as well as an unexpectedly high decrease in the U.S.’s gasoline inventories, the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline has jumped to $3.05, nearly seven cents higher than a week ago. Last year at this time, the gasoline was at $2.32 per gallon. Colorado is reporting the lowest state-wide average gasoline price at $2.80, while Hawaii is reporting the highest state-wide average gasoline price at $3.55. As the price of crude oil began to fall in December (dropping nearly 12% from its peak) there was increased hope that there would be a nearly equal drop in the price of gasoline. Unfortunately, as the price of gasoline began to ease, it’s descent was slowed, and ultimately reversed, by a rebound in crude oil. Unfortunately, we should probably get used to more frequent ebbs and flows in ...
Do The New Fuel Economy Standards Go Far Enough?

Do The New Fuel Economy Standards Go Far Enough?
2007-12-27 00:46:00
On December 19, the United States Congress passed a new energy bill which, among other things, put the 100 watt incandescent light bulb on death row (they’ll be outlawed by 2012) and increased fuel economy standards for the first time in over two decades. That same day, President Bush signed the bill in to law after having it delivered to him in a Toyota Prius hybrid car. While many have hailed the bill as a long over due reform, others have argued that the changes - specifically increasing the fuel economy standard for new cars and trucks to 35 mpg by 2020 - do not go far enough and should have been much more stringent. Not surprisingly, many Daily Fuel Economy Tip visitors fall into the “left wanting more” group. Here’s how readers responded when asked, “Do you feel the Government’s new fuel economy standards are tough enough?”: 42% said, “No, they are inadequate.” 33% said, “They are a good start, but could have been...

A Holiday Miracle: Gasoline Back Under $3
2007-12-23 23:21:00
It looks like gasoline prices, which have fallen under $3 per gallon for the first time in a little over a month and a half, are easing just in time for many Americans to finish up their holiday shopping. Hopefully this price decline will help ease the shock of next month’s credit card bills. According to GasBuddy.com, the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline now stands at $2.98 per gallon, down about three cents from the prior week and 11 cents from one month ago. Currently, Missouri has the lowest state-wide average price at $2.78 per gallon, while Hawaii is reporting the highest state-wide average price at $3.54 per gallon. Unfortunately, it appears as if $3 gas is the breaking point for most Americans in terms of having their finances affected. According to a recent article on CNN Money, a large percentage of Americans say that when gas is at or above $3 per gallon, the amount of money they spend on discretionary items drops dramatically. Of ...

Higher Gasoline Prices Bring Significant Economic Concern
2007-12-15 20:07:00
Thanks to a huge jump in gasoline prices, the Department of Labor reported that a key inflationary figure came in much higher than expected, causing many to wonder whether or not the Federal Reserve would be able to continue to cut interest rates to help prop up a slumping economy. According to the Department of Labor the Consumer Price Index jumped by 0.8 percent during November, which represents the largest jump since Hurricane Katrina. Much of this jump was fueled (no pun intended) by significantly higher energy costs, specifically higher gasoline prices. While it would be nice if the jump in gasoline prices was simply limited to causing us pain at the pump, it doesn’t appear that we’re going to be so lucky. As the price of gasoline rises, it has a very strong trickle down effect into the prices consumers pay for every day items. Whether higher gasoline prices drive up the cost of producing a product or simply the cost to deliver a product, manufacturers and shipper...

Do Gas Stations Break the Bank When Gasoline Prices Rise?

Will 2008 be Known for $4 Gasoline?
2007-12-06 00:00:00
Despite the recent decline of the price of crude oil futures (from $99 a little over a week ago to today’s closing price of $88.32) and a slight dip in the national average gasoline price (from $3.10 a week ago to $3.04 today) it appears that many of us believe gasoline prices will only ...
