Richard Hill/Pat Cooper pulled out a massive 24 second lead by the end of the first stage on their way to category three victory over Darren Moon/John McNichol, while the Porsche 911RS of Steve Smith/John Nichols took a commanding category two win. With Patrick Watts/Elgan Davies sliding their Sunbeam Tiger off the stage and out of the rally on the penultimate corner of Radnor, Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride took a dominant category one victory in their Porsche 911. Only eight of the 62 starters failed to make it back to the Builth Wells finish. Category 1 ?It was just so slippery, we were first on the road and cleaning the surface. Porsche Celebrates 60 Years of Sports Cars
2008-05-31 00:00:00 Click on the picture to enlarge More Porsche photos. Exactly 60 years ago, the cornerstone was laid for a family-operated company, whose rise from modest beginnings into one of the most important sports car marques in the world no one at the time could ever have foreseen. On June 8, 1948 a new chapter in automobile history began. For on this day, the first Porsche prototype with the vehicle identification number 356-001 received its official approval and homologation for road service. ?It all started when I began looking around and just could not find my dream car. So I decided to build it myself,? said Ferry Porsche ? and to this day, this genius and pioneering spirit has shaped the philosophy of the German company. However, over the past six decades, Porsche has not only experienced peaks, but also troughs. Yet thanks to efficient production methods, clear branding and innovative models, such as the Porsche 356 and the Porsche 911, Boxster and the Cayenne, the once small sport... Historic Rally Car Register on show at Chatsworth
2008-05-31 00:00:00 The Historic Rally Car Register will be on show at the Rally Show at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire on 7/8 June, as 50 years of the British Rally Championship is celebrated with a star-studded line-up for rally legends and former BRC champions. The HRCR is the leading club for rallying in cars that typified the first two decades of the BRC story, and promotes a range of events for the type of cars that competed in the very first years of the BRC. In 1958, the inaugural BRC was won by the Triumph TR3A of Ron Gouldbourn and Stuart Turner and that type of car is still very active with the HRCR, competing on events that bring back the flavour of rallying in the late 1950s. Moving forward in the BRC story, through the 1960s and 1970s the championship was won by cars like the Mini Cooper, Lotus Cortina, Ford Escort Mk1 and Ford Escort Mk2, and those are the type of cars now thrilling fans in the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship. On the same day, half a century ago, the ambitious and budding engineer also went on to win a heat of the Rochester Trophy. 50 years on at the Masters Historic Festival, Lola organised for respected historic preparation expert Rick Hall to drive the very same car and emulate the sub one minute lap. Hall set a best time of 59.452s - his fastest lap of the day. After completing the historic laps, Rick Hall said: It ... More About: History , Clock , Back
