Click on the picture to enlarge For many Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix fans, the annual race poster is the icon of the event. It announces the dates, reveals the year?s featured marque and sets the tone for the 10-day event. This year?s poster, in addition to doing all of the above, has broken the mold in both format and style. Pittsburgh?s Mark Bender has created a nostalgic image that incorporates period-correct illustration with a striking frame/border that helps to tell the unique story of the nation?s largest vintage sports car race and the only one run on city streets. BenderAccording to Pittsburgh artist Mark Bender, ?This was my second poster for the Vintage Grand Prix and it went as smoothly as the first one back in 2003. Dan Holmes, the Grand Prix?s designer, gave me all the pertinent information and then cut me loose with complete creative freedom. Great subject matter, creative freedom and all for a good cause - every illustrators dream job.? Continua leyendo "2008 Gra...

Targa Tasmania 2008 gets thumbs up
2008-04-30 00:00:00
Click on the picture to enlarge The 17th running of Targa Tasmania has been given the nod as the best ever by competitors, according to event director, Mark Perry. While Targa is an established part of Australia?s motorsport calendar, the event underwent many changes in 2008 . Competitors spent more nights in Launceston, less time on liaison between stages and took on a number of new stages. Devenport hosted its first street stage, Strahan hosted its first overnight stop, and the Hobart Domain was returned to the competition schedule, and attracted a huge crowd. Perry says he has been overwhelmed by the positive response from the competitors, and also delighted with how the event was viewed by sponsors and supporters. ?Any change means taking risks, but it seems like everything we have touched this year has turned to gold,? Perry said. ?Launceston provided a fantastic base for the first five nights of the event, and people really enjoyed staying in the city and not having to p...

South to Surrey Set amidst the rolling Surrey Hills and yet within easy reach of Guildford, Loseley Park can trace its history back to the Domesday Book of 1086. A trusted advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, Sir William More built the present Manor House between 1562 and 1568 using masonry salvaged from nearby Waverley Abbey (itself a twelfth-century building). Still home to his descendents, this imposing Elizabethan edifice is surrounded by stunning parkland not to mention a walled garden, ornamental lake and plethora of ancient trees. Visited by various monarchs from Queen Elizabeth I in the 1560s through to Queen Mary during the 1930s, Loseley Park will play host to H&H for the first time on Sunday June 8th 2008. The movie Le Mans made me a Car Freak!!
2008-04-27 00:00:00
Back in 1982, my first year in high school, my father went out and got my brother a 1970 914 for $1,000. I looked at with VW symbols on the windows as a VW. So what I thought. I liked bugs, but what is the big deal about this Porsch. Yea, no "E" at the end for me back then. I was in school, loving airplanes and wanting to fly into space. So we got the car home, began to play with it, and then one night Le Mans the movie came on. Wow, a 24 hour race!! Around streets. And long straights and top speeds faster than an Indy car!!! I watched the movie falling in love with the Porsche 917. Porsche had to win Le Mans. The "E" came out. There I was owning and learning to drive in the 1970 Le Mans winning Porsche 914, which was a movie star. 6 times it flashes by in the movie. More than in a flim inwhich I am in the movie "Birdy", in the porm scene. Not Porn scene. The movie Le Mans made me a Car Freak !! Then we just wanted more. Like a pair of shoes for different th...

Classic cars events at Castle Combe Circuit
2008-04-27 00:00:00
For classic car clubs and owners, the spring and summer months at Castle Combe Circuit offer some great opportunities for your car, both on and off the circuit. Sunday 8 June sees the first-ever Castle Combe Classic Drive-In for classic cars. On the basis that there is nothing wrong with copying a good idea, the circuit will invite owners of classic cars to drive down, display their cars, talk cars and enjoy breakfast in the Tavern Clubhouse. "Circuit Driver" Magazine last year reported that the Tavern served the best breakfast at any circuit in the country, so come and try it yourself. Admission is just a £1 donation per car to a local good cause. The gates open from 08.30 to 12.30. Just one week later, there is a chance to take your classic or sports car onto the circuit for just £30, at the famous (and now re-named) Retro & Sportscar Action Day. Castle Combe probably invented club driving days almost 25 years ago. An Action Day is a blend of club displays and all-out track...

Group C vintage racing set for booming grids
2008-04-27 00:00:00
The evolution of the Group C organisation, has lead to almost forty sportscars being registered for the season. Group C?s Charlie Agg, comments, ?I am delighted with the ultimate response to what we have proposed for this season. We looked for our racing members to sign up for the season, offering them what we considered to be an excellent package for the four races and test sessions of track time, competitive racing, together with a social and hospitality programme the like of which the Group C series competitors have not experienced before. ?It has taken a considerable effort to achieve this ? but once people grasped the rationale behind what we were trying to achieve and why, almost everyone understood that a commitment to the season was not only in their best interests but also in the interests of Group C as a whole, going forward.? Again, in 2008 Group C will see entrants from all over the globe participating in the series. Brian De Vries will seek to improve on his 2007 run...

Super Rare Aston Martins Make Over Half-a-million Pounds at H&H?s Inaugural
2008-04-27 00:00:00
Despite the doom and gloom pervading the current economic climate, H&H enjoyed a notably successful sale on its first visit to Harrogate. Auction goers both old and new were bowled over by the Harrogate International Centre?s spacious indoor exhibition facilities. Newly refurbished but not yet open to the general public, the adjoining Royal Hall had its floor area decorated with automobilia and its VIP boxes filled with racing motorcycles. With its towering ceiling, gilt-laden mouldings and classical tableau paintings, this truly magnificent ?saleroom? played host to visitors from throughout the British Isles and Europe as well as others from South Africa and Japan. Perhaps understandably given its rarity and importance within the canon of Aston Martin models, the DB6 Short Chassis Volante (1 of 37) attracted international interest. A presentable but by no means concours car, it sold to Europe for a new auction world record price of £324,500. Not quite as scarce as its open-topped...

2008-04-27 00:00:00
As well as the 21st Century's double World Rally Champion, Marcus Gronholm, the Rally Show at Chatsworth on 7/8 June will be visited by at least one World Rally Champion from the 20th Century: Stig Blomqvist, World Champion in 1984 at the wheel of an Audi quattro, is scheduled to make an appearance at the Show. It is no coincidence that Blomqvist was also British Rally Champion in 1983. The theme for the whole weekend is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the BRC. The Tesco 99 Octane British Rally Championship contenders will be there in force and will contest four rallies over the Chatsworth stages in the course of the weekend. The Rally Show at Chatsworth's "History of Rallying" demonstration features examples, some of them the actual cars, of the rally cars which won the BRC during its 50-year history. These range from an ex-works Triumph TR3a and John Sprinzel's original Austin Healey Sprite (PMO200), through Volkswagens (including one of Bill Bengry's original Beetl...

All eyes on Formula Ford duel at Castle Combe
2008-04-27 00:00:00
After a lap record smashing opening meeting at Easter and some scintillating performances from the leading protagonists, all eyes will be on the Melton Concrete Products Formula Ford 1600 race at the Castle Combe Circuit?s Husqvarna Springtime Raceday on Monday May 5. Whilst the competition was even more intense due to the addition of the ?Golden Helmet? races, Easter Monday?s Formula Ford action was of the highest quality. Outstanding amongst a pack of drivers who all seemed to have ?upped their games? for the new season, were Bradford On Avon?s Ed Moore and Bridgwater?s Josh Fisher. Although it was Fisher who beat Moore comprehensively in the circuit?s championship race, Moore showed his class by coming through from the back of the grid to win the prestigious ?Golden Helmet?. But it was Fisher who smashed the lap record, previously held by Moore, reducing it to a previously unthinkable 1:10:511, an improvement of almost three quarters of a second!
