2008-03-28 00:00:00 Click on the picture to enlarge Father and son team Graeme and James Dodd are planning to compete regularly with the Masters Racing Series this season in two very different cars. The Oxford family team plans to campaign its Jaguar XK120 in the XK Challenge, which runs within the Masters Cloth Cap Series, while the Dodds will also race their Ford Mustang in Top Hat races. Dodd senior has a successful record in historic racing, including victories in the BRDC Historic Sportscar Championship, XK Challenge and Top Hat Saloons. "We've won two championships with the XK120, so we're getting it back out to race with Masters," said Dodd senior. "We decided to race with Masters as there will be longer races and the two-driver option, and so the great thing is that we can share the car." James has yet to race the XK120, although he has tested it. "It feels like a boat to drive," he joked. Graeme reckons that in a wet race the XK could spring a few surprises. HPI survey reveals the Porsche 911 is the ultimate in 80s cars
2008-03-28 00:00:00 Click on the picture to enlarge Gene Hunt would doubtless mutter resignedly about ?southern nancies? but the Porsche 911 has beaten his beloved Audi Quattro in a new survey of dream eighties cars. With the hit BBC TV series, Ashes to Ashes drawing to a close this week, the Porsche 911 took almost a third of all votes 29%, just pipping the Audi Quattro with 28%, to be crowned the decades most desirable car, in a poll conducted by vehicle check specialists HPI. Both cars left their 80s rivals trailing in the dust, with only the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth and BMW M5 to make any impression in the survey with 15% and 12% respectively. The survey also asked respondents about which iconic cars from that period they most fondly remembered, and it was another TV car that swept all before it. The Ford Capri SLE 71R, immortalised by Terry McCann in Minder, polled 30% of the votes, receiving more than twice as many votes as the Jaguar XJ6 driven by his TV boss Arthur Daly which polled 11%. "These cars were built to compete with the Dodge Daytonas and Plymouth Superbirds on the NASCAR circuit," said Bill Adams, president of Comet East Car Club. "In the midst of all of that, there was a shift in thinking. Fuel standards changed and insurance rates for cars this big and fast skyrocketed. Ford backed off and never mass produced these cars." Couple those facts with a new NASCAR rule that raised the minimum production number for homologation from 500 vehicles to 3,000, and even the prototypes became scarce. "There is only one Cyclone Spoiler II," said Adams. "There were two of them built and this is the only one that survived. There were four King ... More About: Nascar , Display
