Springtime is also when the media begins to report on motorcycling, andmore often than not they don't report on the vast number of positiveaspects of motorcycling. Instead they choose to attempt to sour the imageof motorcycling by painting a picture that motorcyclists are a socialburden on the backs of the American taxpayer.

Here is a letter from The Publisher Paul Allen of FullThrottle Magazine (http://www.fullthrottleusa.com): It was 6 pm, Saturday evening, July 21 and we were standing outside of Foxy's Showbar. The rain was coming down so hard we couldn't see the trafficlight on the corner of Nebraska Avenue and Fletcher. Weather reports statedthat numerous Tampa intersections were flooded and impassable, hail wasreported in multiple locations, 50 mile per hour winds were gusting and theBay News 9 weather radar didn't look good.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has learned that the US House introduced a non-binding sense of Congress measure supporting the goals of a Motorcycle Safe ty Awareness Month. Motorcycle Champion Michael Burgess (R-TX) introduced HRES 339, with a strong second from Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ). You should recognize HRES 339's main sponsor, Mr. Burgess, as the same member of Congress who is leading the charge on reforming the HIPAA law that allows for insurance discrimination of motorcycle-related injuries. The bill's second sponsor, Ms. Giffords, hails from Arizona where she has a terrific relationship with ABATE of AZ and all of the other rider organizations in Arizona (and yes, she rides too).

Grant Deadline Approaching The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) alerts you to the approaching deadline for this year's federal motorcycle safety grants.  The official deadline for any state to apply for funds in 2008 is August 1, 2007.  Thanks in large part to the efforts of the MRF and numerous State Motorcyclists' Rights Organizations (SMROs), as well as concerned motorcyclists nationwide, SAFETEA-LU or Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient, Transportation Equity Act: a Legacy for Users (PL109-59) directed the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) through its National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to set aside $25 million to be spent through fiscal year 2009 for motorcycle safety initiatives. The same procedure as last year stands for states to apply for the funds.

Help close the loophole and end discrimination against motorcyclists.   Motorcyclists in Florida unite!  We need letters written to your United States Representatives in the US Congress, as well as to Senator Nelson and Senator Martinez.  We addressed this initially almost a decade ago but the bureaucrats have succeeded in going against the wishes of that previous Congress.  Our protections as motorcyclists have been lost and we must regain them.

In Florida, when the weather is warmer with cool nights, more riders are on the roads. There are many new riders and unfortunately, more accidents as a result. Let's make our neighbors and other motorists aware of motorcycles and other two wheeled vehicles. Yes, trikes also fall into this category. Biker organizations like American Bikers Aiming Toward Education (ABATE) and the American Motorcyclists Association (AMA) advocate motorcycle safety through educating the rider as well as motorists at large. The Florida highway patrol (FHP), offers driving tips to motorists as it relates to road conditions in Florida.

Federal Legislation to End Discrimination of Bikers Introduced

This is an important press release by Jeff Hennie of the MRF. Information to contact the MRF will be listed at the end of the article. Washington DC  The Motorcycle Riders Foundation reports that legislation to close the  loophole that currently exists in our nation's health insurance  industry has been introduced in the US Senate (S 616) and House (HR  1076).  Under current law, group market insurance customers - that's everyone  who has insurance from a job in the private sector, military or  government - can be denied benefits for a particular injury just  because it came from an motorcycle accident.
