Review of Jet Airways
2008-02-28 19:48:00 By Vipin Agnihotri Having started flights to the United States last year, Jet Airways have all the potential to become the world's best airline. Jet Airways at this moment of time has 90 planes -- Boeing 737s & 777s and Airbuses. In addition, the carrier has ordered 30 more planes for $2.5 billion. Jet Airways employs 10,000 people and its revenue during the fiscal year 2006-07 was $1.4 billion. By 2011, the revenue of Jet can grow to $3.5 billion. In other words, Jet Airways as a brand is pretty much established. Between Jet Airways and Jet Light, company has about 70 Boeings. Out of which, few are Airbuses. Company also has some 8 ATR. By next year, Jet Airways will have 120 planes. Of these, 20 planes are wide-bodied 777s while 10 are Boeing 737s. The domestic market of Jet Airways is growing by 40 percent. On the other hand, their international business is growing by 18 to 20 percent. In terms of statistic, the domestic revenue of Jet Airways was $1.1 billion in 2006-20... More About: Review
Exclusive: Bengaluru (Bangalore) International Airport is ready for first f
2008-02-28 02:14:00 By Vipin Agnihotri After number of years of deliberation, the Bengaluru International Airport is finally ready. I have full-proof information that the first flight to take off from the newly constructed airport in Bengaluru has been decided as 0001 hours, March 29, 2008. The pivotal factor here is that up till now Bengaluru did not have a full-fledged airport and was relying on the services of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited airfield. Land for Bengaluru International Airport was first identified at Devanahalli. In terms of statistic, the estimated cost of the project was in the range of Rs 13.34 billion. However with the passage of time the project cost went up to Rs 14.12 billion. And now when everything is completed, the cost stands at Rs 19.30 billion. Bengaluru International Airport is going to be the third busiest in India with at least 7.5 million passengers using it annually. Furthermore, the airport is expected to have at least 900 domestic flights a week. Another go... More About: Exclusive , Bangalore , Ready
Anil Ambani Looking to Make Shareholders Richer
2008-02-27 03:27:00 Dangling the Carrot By Priya Nigam Billionaire Anil Ambani 's group of companies is trying to make headway with the common investor. Reliance Energy Ltd, India's second-biggest utility, now plans to consider a share buyback, less than a week after Reliance Power?s announcement of bonus shares for non-promoter stakeholders. Previously, on Sunday, Reliance Power (RPWL) announced a bonus issue of 3:5 shares. This means that for every 5 shares held, the company would give 3 shares for free. This offer would be for non-promoters, which excludes Chairman Anil Ambani as well as Reliance Energy, which together hold about 90% of Reliance Power. While Reliance Power garnered a record Rs11,560 crore through its IPO, the stock plummeted on listing on February 11. Shares were not hit by any company-specific issue. Rather the global sell-off in equities hit all Indian stocks and more so new shares. So, the company decided to give away free shares to boost investor confidence. Of course, thi... Two value stocks to buy at present
2008-02-27 03:20:00 By Vipin Agnihotri Take a look at two value stocks identified by The India Street. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) As was the case with other IT stocks, Tata Consultancy Services was under selling pressure and fell from around Rs 1,300 in February 2007 to Rs 800 in January 2008. At this moment of time, it is trading at around Rs 899.95. When I analyzed this stock, I found that its profitability growth has slowed down from 43 per cent in March 2007, to 24 per cent in December the same year. Point to be noted here is that the company added 54 new clients, with the biggest contract being a $1.2-billion full-services deal with The Nielsen Company. There is quite a good chance that global economic slowdown will create cost-control pressures that will see more work outsourced to India. As an investor, you can take advantage of that. Infosys Technologies- Widely been regarded as India's hottest software company, Infosys lost 30 per cent of its market cap last year, partly on fears o... More About: Stocks , Present

Top IT hotspots in India
2008-02-25 16:39:00 By Vipin Agnihotri Bangalore is one of the hottest IT destinations of India . The ten-fold growth of Bangalore is basically due to the IT boom in last two or three years. Widely been regarded as the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore is known for its information technology and information technology-enabled services. Software companies such as Infosys and Wipro is based in Bangalore. According to one estimate, Bangalore is responsible for more than 30 per cent of India's Rs 144,214 crore IT exports in 2006-07. Similar to Bangalore, Hyderabad has also witnessed an IT boom in recent years. It is worthwhile pointing that software exports figure has crossed $1 billion in 2004. At present, Hyderabad is witnessing big investments in digital infrastructure. Few days ago, Indian government has given an approval to seven new projects, Chennai is India?s third-largest exporter of information technology and information-technology-enabled services. In terms of infrastructure, Chennai ha...
Exclusive: Insider Information on the New India Budget
2008-02-24 19:45:00 By Vipin Agnihotri India n Finance Minister P Chidambaram will present this year budget on February 29. The India Street wants to give you some exclusive information regarding the budget. First and foremost, I am quite sure that income tax payers will get huge relief in the Budget . This is because of the simple reason that government is preparing itself to convince the middle class in the election year. Secondly, real estate sector is likely to witness more action this year. Initial signs are that this year budget may bring some good news for housing project developers. Indian Finance Minister may increase the sunset clause for housing projects, which is completing on March 31, 2008. If you are interested in purchasing a high end music system, a plasma TV, a big refrigerator or an air-conditioner, wait till the Budget because finance minister is all set to minimize excise duty on few of these goods in order to increase consumer spending. India hikes Oil Prices while ONGC Plummets
2008-02-24 00:57:00 Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) By Priya Nigam So, the government has finally decided to hike petrol and diesel prices. While global oil prices have been flirting with the $100 per barrel mark, the India n government was still on tenterhooks about the hike. Petrol prices were upped by Rs2 per litre and diesel prices were raised by Re1 per litre. While this may not be good news for you and me, the decision offers some respite to companies like Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), which produces around 80% of the country?s crude oil. The company missed analyst expectations when it reported its fiscal third-quarter results. Net profits had plunged 6.5% to Rs4,367 crore in the quarter ended December 31. The state-run oil major?s Chairman Mr. R.S. Sharma had cited the subsidy burden as the reason for the dismal performance. ONGC is required by the government to sell its output at a huge discount. In the December quarter, the company sold crude oil for $54.52 per barrel, which ... More About: Prices
Overpriced real estate markets in the world
2008-02-24 00:53:00 By Vipin Agnihotri The India street is back again with valuable information for their readers. This time around we will take a look at world?s most overpriced real estate markets. Monaco Monaco is all about luxury. Monaco is quite popular for its "tax haven" status. In my opinion, Monaco's real estate market has nowhere to grow but up--or up. Monaco's present plan to expand into the sea by building an artificial peninsula should take off some price pressures. Rome The real estate market of Rome is experiencing a slowing rate of return. In my opinion, prices are appreciating in the Roman city center, but the cost of each dollar of appreciation is quite costly in nature. In addition, 14.6% transaction fee premium on buying property doesn't help either. Paris Similar to lots of European cities the capital costs associated with buying a home in Paris are boosted by high transaction tax on buyers (11.5%) an... India ahead of China in Bertelsmann survey
2008-02-21 19:34:00 by: Priya Nigam India Stands Tall Recently, I bought a pen that has a torch at one end. It?s pretty useful you know. And it?s compact and slick. What?s most fascinating about the pen is that it cost me Rs10. Yes, you guessed it? it was made in China . It seems like everything around us is made in China these days, from color pencils to DVD players! Heck, I even bought a souvenir in Australia to find out later that it had ?Made in China? etched below it! And I think to myself, ?Why is India lagging behind?? Well, guess what. It?s not. In fact, it is way ahead. No, I?m not saying this out of patriotism. Bertelsmann Foundation, a German NGO, is saying this in a recent study. China may be the world's fastest growing economy, but India is transforming at a more rapid pace and in a more successful manner than its Asian counterpart. The study, called Transformation Index, conducted by Bertelsmann Foundation, has ranked 125 countries on the basis of development, management and market eco... More About: Survey , Ahead
New Bangalore Train Metro - A Good thing?
2008-02-21 19:31:00 If it's one thing Bangalore needs is a public transportation system that does not involve buses. The new Bangalore Metro promises to deliver at least in part on the need but there are few glaring holes that need to be thought out. First, why is the train only designed for a maximum speed of 80 km per hour (50 mph)? Even trains in the US can reach 100 mph while trains in parts of Asia reach over 250 mph (402 km per hour). I recognize the distances are smaller, but designing a train for 80 km per hour seems antiquated. My second issue with the metro is the length of time needed to make the Metro a reality. Comparing it to the Delhi Metro, the completion time line here is far too long. The Bangalore Metro construction work on the first elevated section from Byappanahalli to Cricket Stadium (7 km.) began on December, 2006 while The foundation stone was laid by PM Manmohan Singh on June 24, 2006. The full network in Phase I is expected to be commissioned by December 2011... More About: Train , Good , Thing

PTI also reported that BMW plans to increase its dealerships in India from the present nine to 12 by the end of 2008. It aims to sell 2,000 units in the country by the end of 2008. Review of Indian IT sector - Look to Western Europe
2008-02-19 19:53:00 By Vipin Agnihotri Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s biggest IT services company third quarterly results in mid-January clearly show that North America still accounts for the bulk of TCS’s revenues at 49.5 per cent. On the other hand, Europe ’s contribution to the company’s revenues has jumped to 28.5 per cent for 2007-08 from 23.1 per cent in 2004-05. For TCS, North America grew at 2.2 per cent, UK at 4.9 per cent and Europe at 24.2 per cent. Similar is the case with other IT companies like Infosys, Wipro, Satyam and HCL Technologies. In my opinion, the push for growth in geographies other than the US is gathering steam. Most of the experts feel that Indian IT industry has been minimizing its dependence on the US. According to sources, Satyam and Wipro is eyeing growth in markets like Japan, South Africa, India and China. The main reason behind all this is that the appreciating rupee against the dollar has made selling in the US less attractive. Furthermore, ... More About: Review , Western , Western Europe

2008-02-19 18:47:00 BlogsJam By Vipin Agnihotri In this day and age where blogs are taking over from traditional newspapers and magazines, blogsJam is a fast and easy way of reading articles in top blogs, organized by channels. The best part about blogsJam is that they have taken around 200 (and growing) of the top blogs and grouped them into channels. In other words, you as a reader don’t need to spend time subscribing to blog feeds. When you make your entry to blogsJam, articles from these blogs are served up quite fast. In terms of design, site is decent but without a desinger logo. There is no unnecessary colors or columns throughout the site. Some of the blog channels of blogsJam include India technology & Startups, US technology & Startups, gizmos & gadgets, Indian Finance and business and of course Bollywood. iPhones Google Searches are used 50 Times (50X) more than other mobile hand
2008-02-18 21:08:00 Another reason for Google to release the Gphone software. As Google looks to displace the iPhone as the mobile internet standard, the company realizes it has its work cut out for them. Part of the mobile internet appeal of the iPhone is it's ability to move and zoom around webpages. Android (Google's mobile operating system) must be able to make the internet experience better than the iPhone. I have my doubts as Android must work on a variety of handsets and thus is probably appealing to the lowest common denominator. Referring to the number of Google searches on the iPhone, "we thought it was a mistake and made our engineers check the logs again," said Vic Gundotra of Google?s mobile operations during the Mobile World Congress. As one user commented on the reason why, "with my iPhone, I hit up google several times a week on it since it's always there in the address bar and surfing an iPhone is much easier than a blackberry." iPhone competition is good and a Goog... We have not been given any information about the infrastructure awaiting us,? said Nirmal Singh Sandhu, president of BACC and director of Wilson Sandhu Logistics. ?Will there be a cargo village? What is the cargo handling capacity? Will the customs be ready then? We have no idea.? Trust me folks, that's not a good sign. I'd wait at least 3 months before flying into the airport. Meanwhile, BIAL is in discussions with major carriers in India to base their domestic and international operations at the airport. Tokyo, Japan $4,102 a month The dollar has fared far pretty well against the yen as compared to pound but still prices in Tokyo are extremely high. Seoul, South Korea $3,425 a month While apartments in the Class-A sector of Seoul have appreciated 3% since last year, in dollar-adjusted terms that comes out to about $100 more a month. Review of Haryana State
2008-02-16 19:06:00 By Vipin Agnihotri Picture courtesy of Skyscrapercity.com In my opinion, Haryana is all about big global companies, big buildings, big brands, big investments and big plans. Despite traffic issues, state remain an irresistible magnet for investors. According to sources, there is Rs 70,000-crore of investment in the pipeline. In terms of statistic, last few years have seen some Rs 28,000 crore being invested in the state. I will not be surprise if Haryana post an 11 per cent economic growth during the Eleventh Five Year Plan period (2007-2012). Japan?s Suzuki Motors has invested more than Rs 9,000 crore over the last two years in Haryana. You may not believe at first but its true that Haryana has been the recipient of more than 70 per cent of all Japanese investment in India. Initial signs are that DLF will also invest around Rs 20,000 crore or so into the state in the coming 5-8 years. These three Indian cities are tops in economic growth
2008-02-16 02:37:00 By Vipin Agnihotri Growth is the buzzword in India at this moment of time. The India Street knows this well. Below you will find information of the top three Indian cities in terms of economic growth. Hope you like it. Surat: Talking about Surat, It is the second biggest city of Gujarat with a population of 4 million. In terms of economic prosperity, it is the fastest growing Indian city. Point to be noted here is that Gujarat has registered an annualized GDP growth rate of 11.5 per cent over the past seven fiscal years. Improved infrastructure is the main reason behind Surat's rapid rise. Bangalore : With a growth rate of more than 10 per cent, Bangalore is not just the pensioner?s paradise. As a matter of fact, Bangalore has the biggest number of households with an annual income of Rs 1 million or more. Bangalore's main activity is information technology. Being the leading contributor to India's IT industry, Bangalore is widely been regarded as the Silicon Valley of Ind... More About: Tops , Cities
Which Countries Carry the Highest External Debt Load?
2008-02-14 17:38:00 By Vipin Agnihotri The India Street is back again with some interesting information for their readers. This time around it is countries with highest external debt. Take a look. India- Because of depreciating dollar, India's external debt has risen to $155 billion at the close of 2006-07. In terms of statistic, this is an increase of $28.6 billion over the previous year. What?s more, multilateral and bilateral debts have also witnessed moderate increase during 2006-07. United States of America- In June last year, American external debt stood at $12.249 trillion. In my opinion, soaring oil prices in 2005-2007 threatened inflation and unemployment in the US. It is worth mentioning in this regard that the steady fall of the US dollar this year has put the US economy at an advantage. This is because of the fact that US government can pay back a part of its huge external debt with a devalued currency. United Kingdom- In June 2006, UK's external debt stood at $8.280 trillion. ... Ratan Tata: Global Indian for 2008
2008-02-14 17:34:00 By Vipin Agnihotri It?s official; Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata is the global Indian for 2008 according to National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom). It is worth mentioning in this regard that the Global Indian Award is given to an individual who has had an impact on and contributed in some way to the growth of the Indian and global economy. Nasscom is India?s premier trade body and has around 1050 members, of which around 200 are global companies. In my opinion, Ratan Tata is a class act. I think Ratan Tata have done a first-class job in terms of performance of a steel company. According to Ratan Tata: "One hundred years from now, I expect the Tatas to be much bigger than it is now. More importantly, I hope the Group comes to be regarded as being the best in India ? best in the manner in which we operate, best in the products we deliver, and best in our value systems and ethics. India's Animation Industry to Reach $1 billion by 2010
2008-02-12 17:13:00 While India produces very little feature animation for domestic consumption (where are the India Pixar's?) they are beginning to be the back office for US majors Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, Sony and other major production studios. Moreover there are companies like Image Metrics, Autodesk, and Soft Image that are looking at the feasibility of setting up shop in India according to sources. In an interview with the Business Standard, KPMG Advisory Services (P) Ltd Director Jaiddep Ghosh said, "Although India is the largest media consuming market in the world, only 1 per cent of the US market size which is estimated at $10 billion, so far the animation is concerned, it is currently pegged at $600 million." Which means India has vast potential and will more see more and more foreign and domestic investment in this area. Ghosh further goes on to add, "the Indian market size is extremely fragmented with the top players accounting for 10-15 per cent of the industry turnover. Further, mos... Internet advertising to explode in India
2008-02-11 21:42:00 By Vipin Agnihotri Internet advertising stood at Rs 215 crore last year (a 43 per cent growth over the previous year), but in my opinion it could grow more than ten-fold (to Rs 2,500 crore) by 2011. What?s more, mobile advertising is also going to grow from Rs 40 crore currently to Rs 500 crore by 2011. It is worth mentioning in this regard that for every Internet user there are five mobile phone users in India . At this moment of time, there are three clear categories in Internet advertising that are drawing the attention of entrepreneurs, investors, and established agencies. It includes, mobile-related search and advertising, ad networks that aggregate advertisers and sites and play match-makers, and full-service agencies that do everything from search engine marketing to blog creation to online advertising. Despite the hubbub in online marketing and advertising, it?s early days in terms of business models. For example, when one takes into consideration SMS advertising, one wil... Oil Prices to rise in India?
More articles from this author:2008-02-10 05:23:00 Fueling the economy? The Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was scheduled to meet today to announce a decision on raising petrol prices by Rs2 a litre and diesel prices by Re1 a litre, combined with some cut in excise duty on the two fuels. The Group of Ministers on fuel prices, headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, had met last week and decided to leave this matter in the hands of the Union Cabinet. While the Finance Minister P Chidambaram is in favour of a fuel price hike, the Petroleum Minister Murli Deora is backing a cut in duties. The meeting has been triggered by the recent global price trends. Global oil prices have been surging and crossed the $100 per barrel mark in early January. Concerns over inadequate refining capacity, political tensions and soaring demand from the emerging markets of China and India have kept oil prices at elevated levels. Of course the sizable downturn in the US dollar had a dampening effect on oil futures, whi... More About: Rise , Prices 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
