Fed Policymakers Fear Credit Market Could Worsen, Hurting Economic Growth
2008-01-03 02:57:00
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Reserve policymakers worried at their December meeting about the potential for a vicious cycle to develop in which credit problems could worsen. That could hurt economic growth and force the Fed to act more aggressively in cutting rates, according to meeting minutes made public Wednesday. “Some members noted the risk of an unfavorable feedback loop in which credit market conditions restrained economic growth further, leading to additional tightening of credit,” the minutes said. “Such an adverse development could require substantial further easing” of rates, the minutes revealed. Problems in the housing, credit and financial markets drove the Fed to do an about-face on Dec. 11 and slice its key interest rate yet again in the hope it would bolster an economy that was losing speed. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and all but one of his colleagues agreed to trim the Fed key rate by one-quarter percentage point to 4.25 percent, a two-yea...

Oil Firms And Their Profits. Such as Enron
2008-01-02 23:10:00
The main reason is that many gas companies are vertically integrated. This means that besides selling gasoline to the filling stations that you buy it from, they have a variety of other buisnesses. Companies like Exxon also refine oil into various components, are hired to pump oil from known reserves, explore for new reserves, consult with large oil producing nations/companies on the most efficent way to extract the oil, and of course pump from their own oil fields. Thus, their refining and wholesale buisnesses is likely not growing as rapidly as in the past, and potentially making less. This however is more than offest by the rapidly rasing profits of their other lines of buisness. Many companies that use comodies hedge their future supplies by buying contracts. This gives them the option to buy their supplies at a fixed price. This results in less volatility for the company, but they pay a premium. If the actual price is less when they actually need to purchase the oil, they will ...

The Difference Between ROTH IRA and Traditional IRA
2008-01-02 23:01:00
The main difference is in how they are taxed. Contributions to a traditional IRA are tax deductible in the year you contribute, but you pay tax on withdrawals you make in the future. With a Roth IRA, your contributions are not tax deductible, but any withdrawals you make after age 59 1/2, including capital gains, will be totally TAX-FREE! Unless you currently have a very high income, the Roth is a better choice. You can withdraw up to the amount you contributed to a Roth IRA anytime without paying tax (because you already paid tax on that), but you will have to pay tax (plus a 10% penalty, I believe) on any profits you withdraw before age 59 1/2.

Oil Futures Rise to $100 a Barrel For the First Time Ever, Dow Plunges 200
2008-01-02 21:13:00
Oil prices soared to $100 a barrel Wednesday for the first time ever, reaching that milestone amid an unshakeable view that global demand for oil and petroleum products will continue to outstrip supplies. Surging economies in China and India fed by oil and gasoline have sent prices soaring over the past year, while tensions in oil producing nations like Nigeria and Iran have increasingly made investors nervous and invited speculators to drive prices even higher. Violence in Nigeria helped give crude the final push over $100. Bands of armed men invaded Port Harcourt, the center of Nigeria’s oil industry Tuesday, attacking two police stations and raiding the lobby of a major hotel. Word that several Mexican oil export ports were closed due to rough weather added to the gains, as did a report that OPEC may not be able to meet its share of global oil demand by 2024.

U.S. Stock Market May Go Lower at the First Day Trading of 2008.
2008-01-02 05:58:00
There are few bad news came up before the first day trading of U.S. stock market. Asian stocks were mostly lower Wednesday, with stocks in China, South Korea and Singapore declining in the wake of a lower Wall Street finish, but Australian shares advanced as investors buying blue chips such as BHP Billiton on the first trading day of 2008. Australia’s Centro Properties Group, the fifth-largest owner of shopping centers in the U.S., said Wednesday it is seeking expressions of interest for some or all of its assets as it struggles to meet billions in debt refinancing ahead of next month’s deadline. The Pakistani government said Wednesday that it is calling off the national election scheduled for Tuesday and will reschedule voting for sometime in February, according to media reports. http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/cen tro-seeks-buyers-its-us/story.aspx?guid=% 7B4ADBA51C%2D1D53%2D4C53%2D9A38%2DC1A497B 064BE%7D http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/pak istan-delays-nation...

HOW TO INVEST IN FOREX PROFITABLY
2008-01-01 14:56:00
From a technical analysis viewpoint start with candlesticks. Get the best literature you can afford on candlestick charting and just study that to the point when you can be intuitive when looking at them. At this stage you can then bring in other indicators. Also you will discover this way whether forex/any trading for that matter is for you before you lose your money in case it is not for you as either you will become quite passionate about reading into market psychology prevalent in charts or it will bore you to death. Like any job you need to enjoy the process to be really successfull. And what a process it is, so many people think it is a get rich quick and that is why only about 3% prevail - it will take a few years to be consistent enough to say you can earn a living from trading. Along with your candlesticks learn learn learn proper money management techniques (never risk more than say 2% of your capital, always use stops etc.). And know your own weaknesses, don’t ignor...

What Makes A Stock Move Up or Down?
2007-12-30 17:49:00
It seems like a simple question, yet 99 percent of the investing public does not have the correct answer. Most would answer that buyers move a market higher, and sellers move a market lower. Some would even go as far as saying that a stock moves down because there are more sellers than buyers, and it moves up when more buyers than sellers enter the market. This is partially correct, yet the real reason is a bit more complex. The true answer lies in the bid-ask spread. The essence of trading is that every single share of stock that trades has both a buyer and a seller. That is why it is not 100 percent accurate to say that a stock moves higher because there are more buyers than sellers. For the stock to trade, there must be an equal amount of shares being bought and sold. The real answer is that the stock moves higher because of simple supply and demand, All you need to do to make a stock go higher is to buy all the stock available for ale at a given price, then buy more at the next ...

Stocks seen rising in January; first week of ‘08 has lots of reports
2007-12-30 15:37:00
Monday’s the last call for ‘07 bulls and bears. First few trading days of ‘08 may serve as a springboard for a positive January , strategist says. SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - U.S. stocks are likely to advance in the first week of 2008 as investors pick through equities that have been battered in recent weeks and as they get confirmation from the latest jobs report that the economy hasn’t tipped into recession, said strategists. Monday will be the last chance for investors to make their final stock plays before the books close on 2007 before the New Year’s Day holiday on Tuesday. The major indexes will end the year higher but overall advances will be subdued as investors were forced to battle a credit crisis spurred by turmoil in the U.S. subprime-mortgage market; a deepened downturn in the housing industry; a near 60% gush in crude-oil prices to close to $100 a barrel; and weaker retail sales as consumers reined in their spending. But the first few ...

Sharebuilder’s Service Is Good For Investors
2007-12-30 14:17:00
A few months ago, I clicked through on one of those advertisements from another site and then posted here asking other readers if they had any personal experience with the site/service. I received five positive and no negative comments. I decided to allocate a small amount of money each month and sign up for Sharebuilder to run an experiment using their program investing in a few recommended tech stocks. Above is a screenshot showing the overall percentage result of this portfolio. Sorry, I’ve removed the actual money invested but I may share the actual dollar figures after a year or so has gone by so that folks can see in fact that my investment outlay has been minimal and that enough time has passed to fairly judge the return of the investments over time. I’ve gotten on a cycle and dilligently invested once a month the same amount. To date, 80% of the funds allocated have gone to primarily well known tech stocks and 20% to a low risk money market account. I’m doing the 20% ...
