Poor Leadership; Poor Results
2007-10-29 22:33:00
Leaders are supposed to create momentum of change when there is dire need for it. So when you identify an area that should change, be it in business or in politics or in whatever arena, act upon it and don’t just hand the task to “the government” or “the powers that be”. At least try. ...

How to Build Effective Teams, by Christine Comaford-Lynch
2007-10-16 20:43:00
By Christine Comaford-Lynch, Author of Rules for Renegades Great people can make a mediocre product a success. But mediocre people can make a great product a disaster. Experience has taught me that you don’t have to have a great product. A good product is ok. Great people make the difference. Fact: You need a great team in order to succeed. Fiction: You need to have that great team in place from the get-go. Build ing teams takes time. So let’s discuss who you need on your team, how to build/support/retain that team, how to find your team members, and who your extended team members should be. All the other risks you face, such as market size and technology, won’t have half the impact of your team. Tip #1: Be Diverse A successful team must be composed of diverse players. You’ll need Visionaries, Leaders, Implementers and Infrastructure Builders/Supporters. Visionaries appear at all levels, but must, of course, be highly visible in executive managemen...

Although this article uses the lawyer as an example, “Thought Leader ship ” is a very useful leadership resource in many areas. Why Personal Leadership Will Save the Environment - Blog Action Day
2007-10-15 13:00:00
This post is my contribution to Blog Action Day. The purpose of this initiative is to get thousands of bloggers talking about one topic. This Blog Action Day’s topic is the environment. The environmental issue is a leadership issue. It involves persuasion, negotiation, inspiration, motivation, and all those other “-asions” and “-ations” that leadership is supposed to address. Therefore, leadership should play a central role in this discussion. These days, the environment is on everybody’s minds. Obviously, Al Gore has been partly responsible for such attention, with his Nobel Peace Prize and all. Scientist, politicians, economists argue over the actual existence of global warming, its cause, whether it is human-caused or natural, and so on. But hey, let all the science to, umm…the scientists. For the purposes of this article, I’ll take the sensible premise that global warming is a reality and that humans have a significant role in ...

Leadership by Hypotheses (Forbes.com)
2007-10-14 14:00:00
Previously I wrote a post called Self Confidence to be a Leader . This article, Leadership by Hypothesis, by Pete Pande of Forbes .com, summarizes that importance of self confidence in a leader. Here is an excerpt: “Why “leadership by hypothesis?” Two simple answers:  –Every decision a leader makes–every goal set, target defined, strategy developed–is fundamentally a hypothesis, a more or less educated guess about the future and the correct path to success. –The more conscious you are of your hypotheses, the better you can manage the inherent uncertainties and risks every leader and organization faces—and in many cases, use those uncertainties to your advantage. The best leaders are comfortable with hypotheses.”     Keep reading!

Reinvent Yourself, a lá Al Gore: Nobel Peace Prize
2007-10-13 12:45:00
As you already know by now, former Vice-President Al Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I won’t enter into whether or not he deserved it, but it is another step in his “re-invention”, of which I wrote a post a couple of months ago. I decided to re-post it, for those of you who didn’t read it the first time: Successful investor. Best-selling author. Oscar-award winner. Movie producer. Multimillionaire. Savvy businessman. Ten years ago nobody would have fathomed that those terms would someday describe Al Gore. Yet they do. In the past decade he has founded Generation Investment Management and Current TV, produced An Inconvenient Truth, and wrote best-selling books such as his last one, The Assault on Reason. Granted, you don’t have to agree with his politics or views. But nobody can deny that he has transformed himself from a mocked and non-charismatic politician into a thriving businessman and leader in environmental issues. The former Vice-President...

Why Leadership is About Measuring Success
2007-10-08 15:53:00
I keep hearing and reading that there is a tendency towards leaders having to be “technically proficient”, against being merely “charismatic”. I partly disagree with that, and I’ll try to explain myself in this post. Charisma isn?t the cure-all anymore A “charismatic” leader will not be automatically successful just for being “charismatic”. That, I think, is a ...

Sometimes It?s Better to Quit and Move On
2007-10-01 17:49:00
Entrepreneurs, almost by definition, are adventurous. They strive to make a business thrive in the marketplace. They want their ideas to stand out from all the other ideas that circulate in the marketplace. But it’s almost a rule that entrepreneurs, as a result of their risk-taking attitudes, “fail” at one time or another. They may learn ...

Marcel Marceau died on Saturday. He inspired awe and admiration in millions as a mime artist. Artistic savants as well as ordinary people followed him. How To Make Your Team Happy
2007-09-21 19:58:00
Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone in the team you lead was happy to complete their tasks instead of doing them grudgingly? Well, I think that might be possible. Remember, a true leader finds the way to keep people excited about what they do. So how do you do that? Here are some ideas: Tell them the result you want, and let them come up with the process to get there. Offer resources, then get out of the way. Contribute to the project in some way, at the same level than the rest of the team. Do NOT dictate pre-assigned tasks. Talk about every task that needs to be completed first, before assigning. Ask who is interested in doing what. If more than one person is interested in doing the same task, let them collaborate. No checklist will ever assure you perfect team synergy. But if you do at least one of these things, you’ll probably improve the chances of it happening.

Go Beyond Responsibility

It’s nice to meet people who get the job done. You can rely on them for many things. But don’t count on ‘responsible’ people when you need true change. Why Hillary Clinton Is On Top
2007-09-17 16:03:00
The main reasons why Hillary Clinton is on top of the Democratic field are NOT found in the following list: lots of money well-connected husband lots of experience good looks charm charisma political organization some special circumstance intelligence representing change Etc. I’m not saying the above factors aren’t important. Some of them do contribute to her lead. But there’s another factor that I believe is just as ...
