7 Speaking Trends — How to Make a Powerful Presentation Today
2007-12-08 01:56:00 Chris Witt The fundamentals of a great speech stay the same. (Develop one strong idea. Focus on the audience. Be authentic, clear, and committed.) But styles change with time. These are the latest trends in speeches and presentations. 1. Keep it Short People want information, but they’re already overwhelmed by too much information. If you give them what they need to know in a way they can quickly understand and apply, they’ll love you. Get to the heart of the matter in as few words as possible. Say what you have to say. And stop speaking — even if you haven’t spoken for the allotted time. 2. Let’s Get Personal. In this age of Oprah, interactive websites, and blogs, formal presentations are out. Instead, savvy speakers are speaking conversationally. They’re less likely to “make a speech,” more likely to talk to their audiences. They move away from podiums. They use personal stories and anecdotes. They say I and you, we and us. They encourage audience interac... More About: Trends , Today , Make , Presentation , Speaking
Public Speaking Tips: 10 Easy Ways To Prepare A Powerful Introduction
2007-12-06 00:45:00 Public Speaking Tips : 10 Easy Ways To Prepare A Powerful Introduction By Thomas Murrell An introduction is the very first message an audience will hear when you have to speak in public. It can set the scene and make or break a presentation. It is frustrating so very few presenters use this powerful tool. Always request an MC or someone respected to introduce you. This provides instant credibility through third party endorsement. It is far better for someone else to talk about and endorse your fantastic achievements than yourself! The more senior, respected, experienced or higher ranked, the greater the credibility boost you will receive. As that well-known phrase goes, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. So do you leave this opportunity to chance? Or do you want to control every word the audience hears? It is always best to control the introduction and in particular, write your own introduction and importantly brief the person who will be introducing you. ... More About: Public
TOP TEN WAYS TO MAKE MONEY PUBLIC SPEAKING
2007-12-05 01:16:00 TOP TEN WAYS TO MAKE MONEY PUBLIC SPEAKING by Tom Antion http://www.antion.com SELL YOUR KNOWLEDGE This is my overriding principle that came from years of hard knocks trying to get people to hire me to speak. I get more speaking engagements than I ever had before when I quit trying to sell them and began selling my knowledge in as many different formats as possible. The idea is that infinitely more people can buy what you know through books, tapes, CDs, Ebooks and videos than could ever hire you to speak. Your name recognition because of your knowledge distribution makes speaking engagements much easier to come by because the people that could hire you have already heard you and your message on your knowledge based products. In the mean time, the money from the product sales keeps your business thriving. GET SPONSORSHIP You can get other companies to sponsor your speaking fee so they can be associated with your message when you speak. Stop and think of what kinds of groups would... Repurpose Your Teleseminar - Teleseminars Are the Single Most Prolific Sour
2007-11-27 21:28:00 Today my colleague and friend Patsy Bellah talks about why teleseminars are probably the single most prolific source for new products. One teleseminar can produce at least 20 streams of income or marketing strategies (and counting). 1. Charge for the teleseminar 2. Edit the audio and that becomes a product. 3, 4, 5. Extract portions of the audio to turn it into more than one audio product, an RSS Feed, an audio on your blog, Tips for a new website, etc. 6. Get the teleseminar transcribed and the audio and transcript become a packaged product. 7, 8, & 9. Using the transcript from the teleseminar, extract portions for multiple articles. 10. The transcript of just one hour-long teleseminar is perfect for a Special Report. 11, 12, & 13. Use portions of the transcript for magazine or Ezine articles. One hour-long teleseminar will probably produce about three articles. 14. Using the transcript from one hour-long teleseminar is perfect for a chapter in your book, ebook or home stud... Inside the Mind of Meeting Planners: What Do They Expect and Want from Spea
2007-11-25 00:01:00 I’ve got meeting planners on my mind. I am organizing a campaign to reach more event coordinators and or meeting planners who book speakers and authors. My mandate for my business since ‘92 is to bring speakers/authors and audiences together. Speaker Services is a one-stop shopper for planners to find speakers of their choice and call on them directly. I expect to be calling hundreds of planners to remind them about our service and to be e-mailing many more in the next few weeks. Corbin Ball, CMP (certified meeting planner) shares inside secrets in the following article on what meeting planners expect from speakers. I will also add, whether you work with us or you book yourself please make sure that you have a proper presentation packet together along with a short audio and a 6-7 minute 3 camera video shoot. Having all these items will surley help you get booked quicker. Take it away Corbin.. Inside the Mind of Meeting Planners: What Do They Expect and Want from Speakers... More About: The Mind
Should You Run Your Own Seminar?
2007-11-18 19:45:00 Should You Run Your Own Seminar ? This is a question I get asked all the time. I respond by asking if my client has a following. If the answer is no - I suggest they begin by gathering an e mail list. All too often, professionals think if they put out ads and flyers in the local papers that people will be attracted to attend. No I do not think so! One California man told me he put his money and trust in a marketer who placed ads for him in Florida and to his shock and surprise no one- not one- person showed up. This was a costly mistake to the tune of thousands of dollars. I think seminars are fine once someone knows who you are and you gain a following and it is also tricky to get butts in the seats. We offer seminars throughout the year and believe me it is hard work! Today C.J. Hayden, Contributing Editor, Rain Today offers great advice on running your own seminars. Public speaking is one of the most powerful techniques available to showcase your abilities to prospective clients. ... More About: Mina
Get More Publicity For Your Book and Business
2007-11-14 17:22:00 by Fern Reiss, CEO, PublishingGame.com/Expertizing.com Here, some seldom-considered tips on getting more publicity for your book and business, straight from the top journalists and literary agents who participated in our Expertizing Publicity Forum. Be prepared for The New York Times When a participant in the Expertizing Publicity Forum pitched the New York Times business columnist, the columnist was very interested in pursuing it as a feature story—until she went to the business’s website, which was under construction. She notes that it’s important for authors and business owners to be fully prepared before they send press releases or get in touch with journalists. This sounds obvious, but novices make this mistake all the time. “I think this business is a great idea, but I don’t know that I’d want to pitch a national paper if your website isn’t ready,” she cautions. So be sure you have all your ducks lined up, before you pitch the nationals. Share your personalit... More About: Business , Book , Sine

How to Prepare for A Major Speech You Must give In the Next 24 Hours
2007-11-07 02:59:00 This last week has been a whirlwind for us as we spent 4 days at the International Coaches Federation Conference as exhibitors. There were 1,600 coaches attending from 30 or more countries. We talked to lots of coaches who were interested in learning how to grow their business and income though speaking. Here I am in front of our new banner. And it really worked. People actually stopped and read it and asked for more information. Here are a few friends and clients that stopped by to say hello. This is Otto Siegel This is Lorenda Phillips We left the ICF Conference and shot 15 speakers on Sunday at the Video Demo Showcase. Here’s a photo of Angie Milhous (not a very good photo) and you see her in front of the audience. This weekend we are doing the Authors’ SpeakEasy Workshop and then it is my birthday. Associations Can Be Goldmines
2007-11-02 14:52:00 One of the strategies speakers use to widen their marketing reach is to speak to associations. Presenting to associations gives you a natural link to their member organizations. Thw following interview is with speaker Elizabeth Jeffries excerpted from http://www.nsaspeaker.org article bank discussing how to make those connections and develop clients from association audiences. Why should speakers target association audiences? Elizabeth: Relationships with associations can be the entry into the organizations. Hopefully you are booking regularly with associations, have built relationships, created alliances and you are adding value. You can also co-sponsor programs for which you split the profits. How would you narrow down which associations to target? Elizabeth: If your market is healthcare, you might choose hospitals, nursing homes or home health and really concentrate on that one industry. For example, my husband and business partner Stephen Tweed, CSP, continues to niche in home h... More About: Associations
How to Promote through Public Speaking
2007-10-30 19:28:00 I had to share the following e-note with you that I received from Steve Martinez, President of Selling Magic. This is the kind of note that keeps me going. Thanks, Steve. Susan, I was thinking about you the other day. No, it wasn’t a romantic dream. I was thinking about how you helped me with your passion for speaking and helping others. You have certainly helped me grow my business and although I haven’t scheduled anything lately to attend your sessions. My lack of response does not indicate that I won’t be. I have made great progress as an outgrowth from the strategies and techniques that I learned from attending some of your meetings. Public Speaking Skills Essentials: Learn From The Good, The Bad, And The Bo
2007-10-26 01:08:00 Here are a few tips for you from my colleague TJ Walker http://www.tjwalker.com TJ says: To be a great speaker, you need to be a student of all types of speakers—the good, the bad, and the boring. Whenever I am listening to a presentation I like to sit as close as possible to the speaker I am going to hear. Yes, this means walking up to the front and sitting in the middle of the front row. It can be a bit unnerving at times but it affords you the perfect view for examining a presenter. Most of us, when attending a seminar, conference, or large group meeting are very much inclined to sit toward the back. By picking a safe seat we can blend into the crowd, avoid being called on, play with our blackberrys, or sneak out the back. We all need to do these things occasionally, but I encourage you to try sitting in the front. Keep in mind, the first time is always the hardest. There are several advantages to sitting front and center: 1. You can observe the speaker without distractions fr... More About: Public , Good , Learn , Skills , Speaking
It’s all about Community
2007-10-21 19:37:00 At the Speakers’ Summit this past May I took a survey asking the attendees if they would be open to a membership site and I received an astounding YES. The question was- how could we stay connected with each other and keep on learning virtually? None of us wanted the Summit to end-as it was rich with information and bonding. Hence the Speakers’ Community website was born. It took 6 months to build the Speakers’ Community Membership Site and I announced it a week ago. Have you seen it yet? It does not take the place of our online directory www.speakerservices.com which brings speakers and authors together with audiences. However, what it does offer is a community of like-minded individuals who want to shave years off their learning curve and gain access to the marketing secrets that work for the pros. Another perk, is to post your listing in the Community Directory which is open to the public as well as among members. Who knows someone might want your servi... More About: Unit

Speaking Engagements at Colleges
2007-10-16 17:28:00 When working with college students for speaking engagements always make sure to talk to their campus advisor. The Lecture/Programming Board on college campuses is made up of students who are in charge of booking programs. Many students will receive your marketing brochure in the mail or hear you speak at a conference and they’ll want to bring you to speak on their campus. There is something VERY important to be aware of when it comes to working with students. Make sure to always ask to talk with their campus advisor anytime you are ever contacted by any student who wants to book you for their campus. I had learned the importance of this the hard way. A few years ago, a student leader contacted me several times and ‘booked’ me to speak at an event on her campus. She assured me several times that all was fine with the college, despite the fact she never returned my speaking contract. I made the mistake of taking her word for it and even paid for a non-refundable $600... More About: Colleges , Speaking , Coll , Engage , Engagement

Plan a Powerful Blog Book Tour
2007-10-08 01:44:00 Plan a Powerful Blog Tour by Steve Weber excerpted from Publishers’ Marketing Association Many Internet marketing programs focus on luring readers to your Website. But you can reach even more people with a campaign that meets your potential readers where they already congregate. This means arranging a series of appearances known as a blog tour, a virtual author tour, or guest blogging. Blog tours are especially valuable for authors who can’t travel or are uncomfortable with public speaking, and when touring is impractical because a book’s readers are widely dispersed. While blog tours expose your book to a much larger audience than a traditional bookstore tour—and cost you less in time and money—they also help your host bloggers by providing free content for their readers and affiliate revenue from book sales. Typical blog tours include these elements: · an excerpt displayed on each host blog in the days preceding the tour to publicize the tour appearance · ... More About: Book , Plan

Sell More Books to Libra ries by Fern Reiss, CEO, PublishingGame.com/Expertizing.com You can sell lots of books to libraries—if you know how to approach the library market. Here are my top tips on breaking into this lucrative part of the book business; for more tips, see www.PublishingGame.com/libraryreport.htm. Go for reviews The way most libraries make their purchasing decisions is via the reviews in the major trade journals—Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, School Library Journal, Kirkus, and Foreword Magazine. So it’s important to be sure your book is reviewed in those publications. If you’ve published traditionally, you can expect your publisher to handle this step (though it can’t hurt to ask the publicist or editor if this will happen automatically—and follow through to make sure it does.) If you’re self-publishing your bo... More About: Libraries

YOUR JOB IN THE MEDIA INTERVIEW: 2. Your job in the media interview is to answer the media’s needs FIRST. 3. The media interview is a very well-disguised sales presentation. You job is to help them do their job, while subtly advancing your own agenda. 4. 13 More Media Tips for Working with the Media
2007-09-09 19:45:00 As promised here are the rest of the tips from media trainer Ann Convery. 1. No one will ask you the right questions – your job is to help the media do their job, and then wrap your message around their questions. Learn the art of the segue. 2. Speak in plain English, not jargon and do not use abstract words. Use stories instead. Doctors often have trouble speaking in anecdotes, as they are trained to speak in data. 3. Have at least eight fascinating, little-known facts from your book or business that you can talk about (Use Google. Everyone else does.) This will stir curiosity in your audience and help them remember you. 4. The average TV news story is 90 seconds. You probably need more than 56 or even 285 words to tell your story. But if you can’t explain the essence of your story in 30 seconds to a minute, chances are reporters won’t be interested. Get to the point. 5. What if you are ambushed on air ? TEN TIPS FOR WORKING WITH THE MEDIA
2007-09-05 21:10:00 I am going to be talking alot about media as we are preparing for October 11,12 & 13 Media Speak Symposium The tips tooday are courtesy of Media Coach Ann Convery 1. The key to connecting with your audience – speak in stories. Find the emotional aspects of your topic. 2. Use numbers, trends and statistics to be instantly more interesting. 3. What if a radio station won’t let me give the 800 number for my book? Say “ a lot of these questions are answered on my website, which is www.xxx.com.” 4. Don’t assume because you are a speaker that you can speak to the media – this is a deadly mistake many professional speakers make. The interviewer wants the real you – conversation, dialogue, humor, and edutainment. If she feels “talked to” or “talked at” in the pre-interview, you will probably not get on air. Media is a dialogue, not a monologue. 5. Get to the point in 30 seconds or less. Have your three most important points down and get them into soundbites. 6. W...
