New Turkish PE Fund by Actera Partners to welcome Canadian Pension Funds to
2007-02-09 22:03:00 On February 7th, I happened to notice a page view in my statistics from the office network of Financial News Online, a UK financial newspaper. They just so happened to be searching google for "Private Equity Turkey 2006". So I decided to bite, and to my amazement, it seems the Private Equity industry (in addition to the foreign investment in the Turkish banking industry) is taking off. Actera Partner s, formed by Isak Antika, managing director of Antika Partners, and Murat Cavusoglu, formerly a managing director at Bedminster Capital Management, which runs a South Eastern Europe fund (formerly Soros Investment Capital Ltd), have formed a targeted €250m ($325m) joint venture between the €65bn Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and the €67bn Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (press release). That's right. Two very large Canadian pension funds have come together to form one of the largest PE funds focusing exclusively on Turkey. The fund will be focusing on buyout and gro... The Long Tail of Venture Capital: the Deal Flow Learning Curve
2007-01-28 23:02:00 In 1999, working as an analyst for an Internet filtering company, we saw the Long Tail early on. With the top 300 sites comprising 50% of total page views and the top 1500 garnering two-thirds, little did we know at the time that our graphical representations of content and total number of hosts held the secret for Amazon’s, Ebay’s and iTunes’ future sales successes – the economic theory of The Long Tail for multimedia retailers and entertainment. The idea stems from supply-side economic theory, where retailers have to rely on limited shelf space and stocking of popular items (hits) in order to maximize their revenue, thus you have supply and demand setting the price – the economics of scarcity. This fact still holds true for the Wallmarts of today. However, the idea of the Long Tail suggests that if you can make every product available to your customer (an economy of abundance) and get it to them easily while not even maintaining an inventory, then popular item #10... TÜBİTAK Shuts Down Turkey’s Only Textile Research Center
2007-01-18 22:01:00 This past week, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TÜBİTAK) announced that it will be liquidating its one and only Text ile Research Cent er (TAM). The TAM was originally established by TÜBİTAK, the Turkish Textile Foundation and Aegean University. Apparently, it’s being shut down “not because of its successes,” but rather the center “would have had problems with its legal status following the end of another TÜBİTAK program – USAMP, the University-Industry Joint Research Centers Program. Statistics Don’t Lie, People Do On a more humorous, but unfortunate, note, TAM Deputy Director and lecturer at Aegean University’s Department of Textile Engineering, Professor Isil Tarakçioglu, announced to the press that she was so ashamed of the TAM budget that she lied about it to her international colleagues: “At a meeting of the European Network of Textile Research Centers (TEXTRANET), members from Portugal, which has a population of 10 milli... A Turkey VC Analysis: A Request for Answers Continues…
2006-12-13 20:15:00 As seen in Mike Wright and Ken Robbie’s book, ”Management Buy-outs and Venture Capital” (1999), a comparative analysis is presented concerning the private equity industry in Eastern Europe. “Venture Capital in Transition Economies: Hungary, Poland and Slovakia” (1997) written by Judit Karsai, Mike Wright, Zbigniew Dudzinski and Jan Morovic offers an objective and tantalizing analysis of an industry in its infancy, and therefore could be used as an analytic benchmark for Turkey . The report draws comparisons between the 3 countries in the following areas: Cultural, legal and institutional factors, Industry level and firm level governance, Screening of investments, valuation and due diligence, The ability to exit. All of these areas could be directly applied to a report on Turkey, its neighbors in the Mediterranean, or the Turkic/Caucus region. In those three countries analyzed, 2 major problems occurred: 1) access to finance was limited, in addition to an environment of ... More About: Analysis , Answer , Answers , Request
The Turkish Private Equity Industry: With all these questions, where are th
2006-12-03 22:27:00 If one were to analyze the Private Equity Industry in Turkey, one might come to a quick realization upon their search, and then state clearly, "There is no industry!" Now, before all you VC's rush to object, this blogger must ask you, how forthcoming have you been to share this knowledge? Have the goals that you set long ago really been achieved? Despite all the economic and asymmetric excuses that you may entail, one only has to look as far as the Turkish Private Equity and Venture Capital Association's website only to find that it hasn't been updated since 2004. Do we still have an industry in its infancy, or are the constraints of minority shareholder rights, government legislation and an emerging market economy constricting our efforts? In addition, the idea that VC's are over-protective and deliberately withholding this information as proprietary could be said to directly conflict with the objective of the Grandstanding Hypothesis. So where are the results? Who is cu... More About: Question , Questions , Kish
The existence of grandstanding in Turkey?
2006-11-29 21:49:00 One of the premises behind this site is the existence of grandstanding in Turkey , and therefore should be addressed to its relevance in the Turkish private equity industry. As defined in a previous post, the grandstanding hypothesis is derived from a paper by Paul Gompers (1996) and is referenced in his and Josh Lerner's book, "The Venture Capital Cycle". Melody Keung's "New Empirical Study of Grand standing in the VC Industry" provides an analysis for those of you that need a comprehensive background. With the limited existence of IPO's annually and the lack of enthusiasm by the general public to trade stocks in the Turkish market, news and publications of mergers, acquisitions and other exits provide meager opportunity for the grandstanding behavior (or the rush to exit). Then again, the demand to start new or follow-up funds is not very high. Likewise, grandstanding in Turkey must be modified to not only represent taking companies public without a rush, but also taking com... More About: Standing , Exist , Stand
