Buffett to Investors - Think Small
2008-05-04 07:43:00
Last Saturday morning at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting, CEO Warren Buffett and vice chairman Charlie Munger answered questions from the Berkshire shareholders. Here are some of their comments. On Future Returns  Buffett: We would be very happy if we earned 10%, pre-tax. Anyone that expects us to come close to replicating the past should sell their stock; it isn’t going to happen. We’ll get decent results over time, but not indecent results. Munger: You can take what Warren said to the bank. We are very happy at making money at a rate in the future that’s much less than the past… and I suggest that you adopt the same attitude. On Berkshire  Buffett: We think Berkshire is an attractive investment. We don’t think it’s the most attractive in the world. On Future Investments Buffett: We are happy to invest in businesses that earn their money in euros in France or Italy or sterling in the UK, because I don’t have a feeling that thos...

Loss Development in Insurance Accounting
2007-12-24 06:09:00
Berkshire Annual Letter 2001 (Part 3) Warren Buffett recommended reading Jack Welch’s book, Jack, Straight from the Gut. In the words of Warren Buffett, Jack Welch is smart, energetic, hands-on, and expects much of both himself and his organisation. In investing (just like insurance), you can produce outstanding long term results primarily by avoiding dumb decisions, rather than ...

Principles of Insurance Underwriting
2007-11-28 04:39:00
Berkshire Annual Letter 2001 (Part 2) To understand Berkshire, it is necessary to understand how to evaluate an insurance company. The key factors are: The amount of float that the company generates. Its cost. The long term outlook of both the above factors. Usually, it is not the size or brand that determines whether an insurance company is profitably. What is ...

What a CEO Really Wants
2007-11-26 05:50:00
Another joke by Warren Buffett. Though Enron has become the symbol for shareholder abuse, there is no shortage of egregious conduct elsewhere in corporate America. One story I’ve heard illustrates the all-too-common attitude of managers toward owners: A gorgeous wman slinks up to a CEO at a partyand through moist lips purrs, “I’ll do anything - anything ...

Joke by Warren Buffett on Al Ueltschi: Al Ueltschi at FSI is now 83 and continues to operate at full throttle. Relative results are what concern us: Over time, bad relative numbers will produce unsatisfactory absolute results. Even Inspector Clouseau could ...
