Stay Hungry Stay Foolish
2008-05-27 18:49:00
Stay Hungry Stay Foolish” - those was the parting words of Steve Jobs for his commencement speech at Stanford in 2005. I chanced upon his inspiring speech on youtube, and thought I would share it with you here. Life is about connecting the dots, and you can only do it when you look back, never when you look forward. Believing that the dots will somehow connect in the future will give you the confidence to follow your heart. Sometimes, life is going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. You got to find what you love - and that is true for work as well as for your lover. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you will most certainly be right. Remembering that he will be dead soon is the most important tool Steve uses to help him make the big choices in life. ...
The Immense Power of a Well-Crafted Sales Letter
2008-03-14 07:57:00
It has been a while since I wrote the last summary of the Mastermind Marketing System. Time seems to be getting more of a luxury these days. Perhaps one day, I will have to experiment with a polyphasic sleeping style. Anyway, this post talks about the use of a direct mail package and writing good sales letters. No matter what business you are in, whether you are getting new clients or just to keep in touch with existing ones, one of the most critical tools you can use is a well crafted sales letter. There are a few elements to a direct mail package. The Carrier Envelope If it doesn’t get opened, the best sales letter in the world won’t do you any good. There are two approaches. One is to make the letter look personal. Another is to go the other extreme end and put teaser copy on the envelope. Test out both approaches and see which one perform better for you. Your Sales Letter Your sales letter is your perfect presentor, one who never forgets a point. There is a system...

Jay Abraham Mini Hotseat Review
2008-03-07 10:12:00
It’s a Friday afternoon here as I watch the video of the Jay Abraham seminar that I posted a couple of weeks ago. In this age of information overload, sometimes it does take a bit of time to get down to doing things. Increasingly, it is also getting harder and harder to capture the attention of our prospect. If you haven’t got a chance to watch it yet, here’s a brief outline of what it contained: The first three parts cover some of the basic foundational stuff taught by Jay Abraham. This includes the strategy of preeminence and some marketing mistakes people make. Strategy of Preeminence You install yourself in the eyes of your marketplace as their most trusted adviser. Telling it as you see it and guiding them. You render what’s in their best interest. Many people focus on the wrong thing. They fall in love with their business, their product or their service. Everyone should fall in love with their client. Marketing Mistakes People Make Marketing is the u...

Rich Schefren Teleseminar Frustrations
2008-02-01 16:54:00
I have been trying to get onto the Rich Schefren teleconference with Jay Abraham for the past two days without success. Too much confusion over the hiccups and last minute notices. Got the wrong call-in time as I just realised that 31st Jan is not a Friday! Rich has arranged a few more sessions over the weekend so I’m going to try again. Will post a summary here if I DO finally manage to get onto the call. Timing of the new sessions are as follows: Call 1 Friday, Feb 1 at 6:00 pm  EST Call 2 Saturday, Feb 2 at 1:00 pm  EST Call 3 Sunday, Feb 3 at 11:00 am  EST Related PostsRich Schefren and Jay Abraham Teleseminar ReplayAs you already know, Jay Abraham and Rich Schefren did a teleseminar a coup...Free Jay Abraham & Rich Schefren Tele-Seminar TonightI just received an email from Rich Schefren announcing about a teleconferen...Jay Abraham Mindmap with Rich SchefrenI just came across a mindmap that Rich Schefren produced from his brainstor...

The Disney World Experience
2008-01-24 08:48:00
One of the fundamental strategies taught by Jay Abraham is the strategy of preeminence. Today, let’s have a look at a company that does that extremely well, Disney World . If you have ever been to Walt Disney World , you will know that most of the time, the customer experience is fantastic. This is not something that happens by chance. Disney places a very high emphasis on the customer experience and everything it does is geared towards that. This aspect is considered from the strategic level down to the tactical level. For example, the theme, setting, staff (or cast), processes, etc. They even have a company, Disney Institute, to conduct customer service training to all their staff. If you want to improve your customer’s experience, here are some tips that you can pick up from them: While not everything that goes wrong is your customer’s fault, it is your problem to resolve it. Make a personal connection. Make individuals feel special. Surprise and delight your cli...

Spike Humer on Conciously Creating Your Future
2008-01-10 05:22:00
Spike Humer has graciously allowed me to share the contents of a group teleconference he conducted for about 1800 students. This is a bonus component given as part of a 13-month mentoring program he did with Jay Abraham. If you have read Napolean Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” or seen the movie “The Secret”, you will know this phrase: “Our thoughts create our future.” Through the group teleconference, Spike Humer details an effective strategy and blueprint for doing just that. You can download the transcripts or the mp3 of the teleconference. The summary notes of the call can also be found on Spike’s blog. Jay Abraham Super Reunion Seminar Followup
2008-01-09 04:46:00
Here’s the followup email from Jay Abraham about his Super Reunion get-together that he’s organising in March this year. “Hi Martin, I want to celebrate all of your business breakthroughs and successes, past, present and future. I know you love business-building ideas and breakthrough marketing concepts. That’s why you’re on my list. It’s also why 280,000 of you either attended one of my live seminars, purchased a home study version or acquired one of my other expensive products or programs. Well, I always believed there was a huge “void” that happened right after you left my seminar or completed a home study course or finished reading one of my manuals. It’s a queasy, unsettling feeling - when you get animated with the possibilities my concepts could mean to your business - but then you’re left frustrated wanting more help or guidance to put them all into profitable action for yourself. You know my ideas are powerful, but...

Jay Abraham Club on Facebook
2007-12-27 19:42:00
Ever since Facebook opened their network to allow everyone worldwide to join some time ago, I have been receiving invitations from friends to join. At first, I wasn’t really interested in joining Facebook. After all, I was not going to “waste” time playing around with the network. However, when I came across an article that mentioned Facebook, I suddenly became interested. So, what exactly did I read in that article? Well, I found out that Facebook actually allows us to advertise on their network. Advertising on its own is not a big deal but when an advertising medium allows you to target people by location, age, gender, educational background, relationship status and interests, that is something you should seriously consider for your business. So, I did the natural thing of creating an account and running some advertisements on the network. One thing’s for sure. More and more people are catching on using Facebook as an advertising medium and the advertisemen...

Jay Abraham Mindmap with Rich Schefren
2007-12-18 03:51:00
I just came across a mindmap that Rich Schefren produced from his brainstorming session with Jay Abraham . This 6-page mindmap summarises at a glance some key marketing ideas of Jay Abraham. Rich is the founder of Strategic Profits and also the author of a few groundbreaking reports, including the “Internet Business Manifesto” and “Attention Age Doctrine“. You can click on the picture below to download this mindmap (page 1/6 shown). I have finished reading Rich’s “Attention Age Doctrine“, which talks about how marketing has radically changed and why we must change our marketing approach or risk losing our market. These are some of the points covered in Rich’s report: The world is suffering from a case of chronic attention deficit disorder with information overload and technological advances. How (and why) he got scolded by Jay Abraham. Gaining attention is the one of the most valuable thing you can have today. With it, you can easily ...
Critical Questions for the Successful Entrepreneur
2007-12-14 09:23:00
Continuing with my summary of Jay Abraham’s Mastermind Marketing System, this week’s contents talks about some questions every entreprenuer should ask himself of his business. This is part 8 of a 12-part series. If you can’t paint a clear an accurate picture of where you want to go, you can’t get there. There are a lot of different avenues to the same outcome. Define what success means to you, what you want and what you do not want. Ask yourselves these questions: Your Goals and Vision What got you started? What was the reason? What’s the goal? What’s your true market potential? What is your USP and is it a consistent theme throughout all your different communications? Your Business Describe completely what your business or career does. What were the things that initially drove your success? Excluding yourself, your family and your clients, Who else will benefit from your success? How many of your suppliers could be motivated to grow your business?...

The Power of Testing
2007-12-06 20:24:00
After last week’s experience at Harv Eker’s event, I’m back this week with a summary of Jay Abraham’s Mastermind Marketing System. This is part 7 of a 12-part series. Testing is about putting to a vote one against the other. When you comparatively test one approach of doing something against another, you will always find that one will outpull the other by a margin. Sometimes this margin can be as much as 21 times. Don’t you think you owe it to yourself to test? Test everything. Don’t rely on your intuition. The first and most important thing you want to test is the headline. 80% of the impact or outcome is determined by the headline. Anything that articulates the opening communication is a headline. The purpose of the headline is to convey the benefit or the reason why the prospect would want to know more about your product or service. In a sales presentation, it could be the opening one or two paragraphs of you speech. In a retail store, it could...

Harv Eker Millionaire Mind Intensive - Day 3
2007-11-28 19:32:00
The last day of the Millionaire Mind Intensive started one hour earlier at 8 am. Despite the early start on a Sunday morning, most of the participants were there on time. The energy in the hall was simply amazing. We started with a recap of the learnings from the previous two days. Then the topic of emotions and money was covered. We went through an emotional awareness exercise to find out what we felt in terms of anger, sadness, fear, shame, guilt and sorrow towards money. These are all negative emotions which will have a negative effect on our money. Through a process of sharing and reframing, some of these thoughts were dispelled. In the afternoon, we had a surprise activity that nobody expected. Without giving anything away, I must say that many people enjoyed the activity even though we were afraid initially. The day ended with the participants repeating the money association exercises that they had done on the previous day. Most of the participants could see a significant chan...
Harv Eker Millionaire Mind Intensive - Day 1
2007-11-24 00:37:00
It’s 7 am here on a Saturday morning as I prepare to go to the Singapore Expo for the second day of the Millionaire Mind Intensive by Harv Eker. The first day was a long and tiring one. I reached the venue at about 8am for registration. The event started at 9 am and lasted all the way until 11 pm. The venue was packed with thousands of people not just from Singapore, but also from other countries like China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines and Australia. There were even a couple of people who came all the way from Europe and South America. One day before the event, we also received a last minute message informing us to bring along a $100 bill, a blank check and writing materials. We knew the items would be for some activity during the event but one of my friends jokingly said, “A blank cheque? What will they be trying to sell us?” As it is, I didn’t have a $100 bill of my local currency at home, so I bought along a $100 c...
The Power Parthenon Strategy
2007-11-01 20:31:00
This is part 6 of a 12-part summary on Mastermind Marketing System. There are three elements of clients: The people who pay you. The people you pay, both internally and externally. Fall in love with your vendors and team members first. There are two kinds of business model: The diving board theory of business and the parthenon theory of business. Almost every business that Jay looks at operate using the diving board model. It has one primary method which is generating 90 or 100% of the revenue. The parthenon method, on the other hand, has different pillars each of which is a revenue generating activity. If you can move your business from the diving board model to the parthenon model, you will no longer be dependent on that one primary activity. Ironically, that one activity will actually improve as all the other activities will reach out and impact that activity. If each pillar adds a mere 10% to your business, the overall effect will be geometric. After you have added those pilla...

Selling is About Relationships
2007-10-25 20:01:00
The reason why many salespeople struggle is that the needs of the buyer and seller are misaligned. No matter which part of the world you are in, people buy when they are ready to buy. When they convince themselves they have a need. When they have a need that needs to be met. And not when you need to sell and come calling. Most people do not seek low price but just want their problems solved at a reasonable price. Poor salespeople are reducing prices, giving away stuff and allowing margins to be eroded. Good salespeople, on the other hand, provide value and stress on the benefits. They cultivate long-term relationships so that when the prospect is ready to buy, he or she is the person the prospect will look for. When you have that relationship, it wouldn’t even seem like selling. It’s so much easier and less time-consuming. The top salespeople are really masters of cultivating relationships. Have you been cultivating relationships with your friends, customers and prospect...

Scientific Advertising Part Two
2007-09-28 08:47:00
Continuing from my previous summary of Scientific Advertising , here are the points from the last 11 chapters of the book. Reading through some of the principles, I’m not too sure they are true all the time. I think there would be times when there are certain exceptions. 11) Information Writing a good advertisement requires a lot of research. Weeks of reading might be done and in the end, only a few facts are used. But one of these facts could prove to be crucial. A claim that has an exact value will be far more impression than a general claim. Besides product research, studies should be done of the target consumer and even the competition. 12) Strategy A strategy is required to multiply the advertising effeciveness. The right name is an advertisement by itself. Some companies are able to establish coined names which come to typify a product. Others leave the way open to perpertual substitution. The pricing will be closely related to whether you adoupt a low margin, high volume...

Scientific Adveristing by Claude Hopkins
2007-09-21 08:02:00
Scientific Advertising by Claude Hopkins is a book that has been recommended by Jay Abraham and many other marketing legends. The book has a total of 21 chapter over forty plus pages. Here are some points extracted from the first ten chapters of the book. Repeated readings of the book might be required to obtain more insights, therefore I have provided a link to download the pdf version of the entire book at the end of this post. 1) Advertising Laws Through numerous testing by large advertising agencies, advertising has envolved into a science and is based on fixed principles. It is a safest and surest venture that can lead to large returns. It is more worthwhile to track the cost per customer or cost per dollar of sale than the cost per reply. Two separate offers might produce replies of different quality. 2) Just Salesmanship Treat advertising as your salesmen. It’s purpose is to make sales, and not for general effect. The only difference is that effects are multiplied. A l...

Strategic Business Building Weekend Singapore - Day 1
2007-09-06 18:58:00
Attending the Jay Abraham event was a mix of participants from Singapore , Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong. Here are some brief ideas and examples I picked up from Jay Abraham on the first day. It does not include a fair bit of material that was emphasising on marketing mindset. Press Releases - Jay had the fortune to be featured on over 50 media publications. The bad news is that not a single customer was obtained as a direct result of the publications. The way to use these publications is to make them part of your sales materials to build credibility and increase conversions. Tradeshows - Instead of using a normal signage, use one that spells out the benefits clearly for the visitors. This will increase the number of people visiting your booth. Power Parthenon - Some businesses get their new customers primarily from telemarketing. Some get theirs primarily from a sales force. Some from referrals. Some from direct mail. Some from advertising. Some f...

Random Thoughts From Jay Abraham China Event
2007-09-04 17:28:00
Just today, I arrived back in Singapore from China . It had been a tired but fulfilling trip for me. The 3-day event was extremely memorable, for both good and bad reasons. Being bilingual certainly helps, and there were a few occasions where I had to act as a translator (abeit a lousy one) for Jay Abraham. The Chinese entrepreneurs were hungry for knowledge, but some of them had difficulties following Jay’s presentation of ideas, which typically does not run in a linear fashion. They were more used to sequence and structure. However, when given a chance to share their thoughts, the participants were literally screaming for the microphones. As the mic runners did not understand English, it was difficult for Jay to direct them properly. In one particular session, Spike Humer and me even had to take over the role of mic runners. “A first time for me“, says Spike. From the event management point of view, it was almost a disaster, with anything that could go wrong goi...

Spike Humer on Consultative Selling
2007-08-31 18:54:00
Here I am in China writing at the end of the first day of Jay Abraham’s Billion Dollar Marketing Weekend. It’s a huge event with more than 500 participants. Managing such a huge scale event can be a nightmare. Nevertheless, the people from China were certainly hungry for knowledge. One point that Jay spoke about was on the use of consultative selling. If you are not using consultative selling but other forms of selling, you could easily increase your closing rate by 10% to more than 200% if you started adopting consultative selling. He recommended having your entire sales force trained in this area. Spike Humer, Jay’s right hand man and the chief operating officer of the Abraham Group, duly provided us with the shortest course in the world on consultative selling. “Ask questions. Listen.” Brilliant. That sums up the essence. Just remember these three words in mind and you can’t go much wrong. Most companies always start off by talking about the...

The Three Most Powerful Ways to Increase Business - Increasing Your Number
2007-08-09 20:04:00
This is part 4 of a 12-part comprehensive summary of Mastermind Marketing System. A Trick Question How many ways are there to grow your business? Not 1000, not 100, not 10. There are only three things you need to focus on: 1) Increase the number of clients. 2) Increase the size of the transaction. 3) Increase the frequency of the transaction. Apply all three at the same time and you’ll get geometric growth. For example, a 10% increase in each of the three categories will give you a total of not 30% growth, but a compounded growth of 33.1%. Most companies focus only on the first way. Getting more clients. This is the slowest and least effective option of the three ways. It takes a lot of effort to find a new prospect and to convince him to buy from you the first time. It is far easier to get him to buy from you again. But let’s look at a dozen ways to increase your number of clients: 1) Know your attrition rate and reduce or eliminate it. 2) Formally and systematically tr...

How Chet Holmes Convinced Jay Abraham to a JV
2007-08-02 20:41:00
This week, I have in place a nice little bonus for you. You’ll find it at the end of this post. But before I go into that, I want to share a short story I’ve just read from the Chet Holmes book. A story of how Chet managed to get Jay Abraham to become his joint venture partner. A story (if you have not read before) that will no doubt make you realise how little you are currently doing. Ever other week, Chet either tried to reach Jay by phone or sent him a letter. After a period of two (!) years, he finally got a call from Jay’s business manager for a lunch appointment. Chet flew over to Los Angeles for lunch and fixed up a very profitable joint venture partnership. This marketing persistence is brutually deadly but you might only have resources to attempt it on your best 100 dream prospects. By marketing to them over and over again, people go from “not knowing you” to “knowing who you are” to perhaps “getting annoyed” to finally ...
