2008-12-02 08:00:00 Organization visibility is a big goal of mine for next year. This is not a new concept and it certainly is not my idea. Slipping Through the Cracks
2008-01-22 19:10:00 With a growing business, it’s so easy to allow things to slip through the cracks. I have lost clients because of promises that were not kept due to the fact that somebody forgot to do something. I have seen invoices which were never sent and thousands of dollars not collected because someone simply forgot to follow up. I believe there are two types of “to dos” in business–tasks and projects. Projects are large and have multiple dependencies and milestones. With tasks, there is usually just one thing you need to do and when that one task is done, you can cross it off your list. I highly recommend using a good project management system for your larger projects, especially if you are doing any sort of software development. However, this article is about making sure tasks don’t slip through the cracks. (more…) More About: Cracks
Happy MLK Day!
2008-01-22 01:16:00 Dr. Martin Luther King is one of my heroes. Imagine for a second that you knew you could be assassinated if you continued to purse a cause that you knew was right and just. Could you continue to stand up for what you believe in? I think about this often, and I realize that there are very few people on this earth who could. Does this story remind you of any other historical figure? MLK was a very selfless man. He realized that segregation would affect generations of people long after he was gone. He saw a window of opportunity to change that while he was alive on this earth and he took it. It amazes me to think that only 40 years ago, African Americans, and other minorities, were not allowed to go to the same schools as Whites, drink at the same fountains, or sit at the front of a bus. We have come a long way to make equality work, and thanks to Dr. King, “little black boys and black girls are able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.&rd... Plan Your Happiness
2008-01-15 00:41:00 I am sure you have heard of the story of the rich person with tons of money who is miserable or know someone like that. If you know you are going to be successful one day, you need to start planning your happiness now. When my company was making $20,000 a month, I thought to myself, âJared, not bad. Most American small businesses donât make this much.â Then I would see a company doing $100,000 a month, and I would become unhappy and not satisfied with where I was in life. When I started making $100,000 a month, I saw someone making $250,000 and again I became unhappy and not satisfied with where I was. This is the true entrepreneurial spirit. You always want to be doing better. You should never lose this feeling; itâs what drives you to become successful. However, this can be a dangerous slope. I know a number of people who can never be satisfied no matter how much money they have. I believe a good entrepreneur plans for his or her happiness. (more…) More About: Happiness , Plan
The Benefits of Stock Options (Part 2)
2008-01-08 02:34:00 In Part 1, I discussed the benefits of offering stock options and how they help in attracting new talent, creating longer employee tenures, and providing the company with happier employees who respond with greater dedication and an increased work volume. If you agree with me and this sounds great, you need to think about a few things before you go out and adopt a plan. Most importantly, you need to ask yourself if yours is the type of company where stock options make sense. This boils down to your exit strategy. If you are in business to only make money for yourself or your top people and you donât care about going public or selling the company someday, then there is no need to waste your time with stock options. If you want to take care of your employees above and beyond their salaries and benefits you can always implement profit sharing, but you donât need to offer stock options to make this happen. Having a stock option plan only makes sense if you plan to flip the company ... More About: Stock , Options , Benefits
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
2007-12-18 17:59:00 It has been a while since I created a post, sorry everyone! The last month has been pretty unreal in terms of how busy mobileStorm has been. I have been working on getting our San Francisco office open. We have closed some very big deals with some big names that we will be announcing soon, and we are in the process of expanding internationally. And on top of all of that, we are working on our new platform due out in 6 months or so. Needless to say 2008 is shaping up to be a killer year. All the hard work is really starting to pay off. I expect I will go dark until the first of the year. I plan to write on my plane flights coming up so who knows maybe I will post something before the 1st. If not, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas (because nobody dares say this anymore) and a Happy New Year ! Sincerely, Jared Reitzin More About: Happy New Year , Merry Christmas
Everyone Wants to Make a Quick Buck
2007-11-13 02:25:00 The other day I was checking out my blog stats, reviewing which articles were the most popular, and I came across something very interesting. My âRaising Quick Cashâ post on September 3rd by far has had more views than any other post; it wasnât even close. It had three times as many views as the second most popular post, it was linked to multiple sites, and it had the longest page-view minutes. (Damn, I wish I was serving ads!) It really made me think about only blogging about money from now on. Certainly if I want more traffic, it would be a wise move on my part. I initially wrote the article for my entrepreneur brothers and sisters who struggle with cash flow problems. I pointed out a few good things they can do to get some money in the door quickly. It was hardly the most important topic I cover, but interest showed otherwise. At first glance, I figured the increased traffic to this article was just my current reader base more interested in this subject than previous ones,... More About: Make , Buck

The Benefits of Stock Options (Part 1)
2007-11-07 02:54:00 Have you heard about the vast differences between private parks and public ones? The private park (owned by an individual) is taken care of very well. It always has the best-kept gardens, playgrounds, and bathrooms. The public park (owned by no individual) is poorly run and usually has the types of bathrooms that George Michael shows up to hang in. The reason for this is simple: when people take ownership in something, they take pride in what they own, and they have a duty to take care of it. If you donât have a stake in something, you donât care about it and, like the public park, it gets neglected and run down. This same basic principle, I believe, exists in the work environment. I trust most employees will work hard and do a great job, but I believe that you will always see someoneâs full potential when he or she owns something. Itâs like that rundown car you bought for your kid in high school–how stoked was he? He probably spent a ton of time cleaning it up, fixi... More About: Stock , Options , Part , Benefits
I Hate Losing
2007-11-02 02:11:00 I absolutely, 100%, without a shadow of a doubt, hate to lose! I donât hate many things in life, itâs such a strong word, but losing is something I truly hate. Hate I tell you! Did I just lose a deal? The answer is yes - why else would I write this post? Hating to lose is a classic entrepreneur trait. If you donât mind it, put the blackberry down and go find a desk job. Whatâs worse than losing is losing to a competitor. This pisses me off even more. I start asking myself, âWhy were we not good enough?â Maybe we donât have the skills, experience or features that they needed? How is this possible, we are freakin rockstars! But, the simple fact is that there is always someone out there than better than you. Someone that has more money, more employees, more features, more support, more more more more more. (Note to Gates and Brin: If you guys are reading this, please stop and check out my article on the iPhone, itâs the only relevant thing for you on my blog.) The...
