If you make any money, the government shoves you in the creek once a year with it in your pockets, and all that don't get wet you can keep. ~Will RogersTaxes are necessary evils that make a nation a nation, and governments run the affairs of governing. It is a solemn obligation, IMO, to pay the taxes due us. Much more, if you are running a business of your own. Pay your taxes, however it hurts. Business Planning Session Essential?
2008-01-23 18:33:00
Business planning is like water to a thirsty plant. It keeps our businesses vital and thriving. Without business planning, your business will never be as healthy as it could be and may even sicken and die. But many small business owners don?t do the business planning they should, because they?re hard-pressed to find the time to do it. How many times have you thought that you should do some business planning ? if only you weren?t so busy taking care of business! But business planning doesn?t have to be a time-consuming ordeal. In just a pair of two to three hour sessions, you can put together the basics of a business plan that will invigorate your business for the course of a year.So set aside the time on two days for a pair of business planning sessions.(The days don?t have to be consecutive, but should be fairly close in time. You may choose to have your business planning sessions as much as a week apart.)If you?re the sort of person who prefers to work in a group, get together with...

2008-01-19 04:27:00
Instant messaging can sometimes be dry and emotionless. Like office memos. Employees ignore them because they are not fun to read, hence defeating yur purpose of communicating important info. This should not be so. There are many beautiful ways to sweeten your messages, or in the office ?your memos and corporate email communications. One of which is SweetIM.This is an add-on for various instant messengers, emails, forums, blogs and spaces. It enriches communication over the net by way of fun, cool, hilarious content emoticons, Winks, Sound FX, games, glitters and cool nudges. The best thing about this add-on is, it is FREE to use, and completely safe - free of any spyware or adware programs and scripts. No tricks here: You will never see pop-up ads because you use these cool emoticons, unlike the most common smiley add-ons proliferating on the net.By the way, when I first started using (a couple of years ago) the idea of placing emoticons in my memos and corporate emails, I rec...

Workplace Signpost: Time Management Myth
2008-01-17 04:07:00
Time management is a very popular concept. However, it does not mean that it is right. It is actually a misnomer. Let me ask, how can you possibly manage something that you cannot add nor subtract anything into? Something that all creatures were given -24 hours each day? Time easily ebb away without us watching. It can slip like a thief in the night when we are asleep. So, if we cannot manage time, what can we manage then?David Allen puts it to us forward:?You can't manage time, it just is. So "time management" is a mislabeled problem, which has little chance of being an effective approach. What you really manage is your activity during time, and defining outcomes and physical actions required is the core process required to manage what you do.?Here is your take: manage your activities to fit the time you have, and you will be effective this way either in the business sense or personal.Related Article: Tasks Management , Not Time Management Get the latest buzz from YUPPIES' HA...

Managing Polarities in Change Management
2008-01-16 01:47:00
"The art of progress is to preserve order amid change and to preserve change amid order." --Alfred North Whitehead, Mathematician, Logician and PhilosopherIncreasingly, an organization?s ability to respond and adapt quickly while providing increased stability in the midst of change is a great leverage point for achieving sustainable competitive advantage. But this is not about predicting or riding trends; change needs to be a lot more than that. Organizations can get caught in pendulum swings from one trend to another. Sometimes Human Resources professionals are responsible for flavor-of-the-month initiatives; other times they may be trapped by flawed strategies advanced by senior executives. Common examples of these traps include the following.Cultural shifts: such as from directive to participative management styles, or from hierarchical to team based management and decision-makingStructural shifts: such as from more centralized to more decentralized operations (and back again!), ...

HRM: Increase your Company's Competitiveness
2008-01-16 00:34:00
In today?s intensely competitive and global marketplace, maintaining a competitive advantage by becoming a low cost leader or a differentiator puts a heavy premium on having a highly committed or competent workforce. Competitive advantage lies not just in differentiating a product or service or in becoming the low cost leader but in also being able to tap the company?s special skills or core competencies and rapidly respond to customer?s needs and competitor?s moves. In other words competitive advantage lies in management?s ability to consolidate corporate-wide technologies and production skills into competencies that empower individual businesses to adapt quickly to changing opportunities. In a growing number of organizations human resources are now viewed as a source of competitive advantage. There is greater recognition that distinctive competencies are obtained through highly developed employee skills, distinctive organizational cultures, management processes and systems. This is...

Career Development in the Construction Business
2008-01-12 00:43:00
I have witnessed family friends and two of my Uncles, who are Civil Engineers by profession, hit big in the construction business. What I have noticed though, with the projects pouring and the completion deadlines to meet, they have not given time for their staffs? career development. They seem to have relegated this notion on the back seat and placed more emphasis on accomplishing tasks according to their blue prints. This is a malpractice. There are many things going on in the construction industry that needed to be learned by those whose profession hinge on this. Latest Trade Certifications, Health and Safety Standards and legislations, including career development training are available for the taking for those who would like to advance their careers in this industry. After all, the integrity of any constructed installations is also reflected in the integrity of the company or people who built it. IMO, regardless of the industry, career development of your people or employees ...

Planning your human resource or people requirements is a dynamic management process of ensuring that at all times, your company or small business has in its employ the right number of people with the right skills, assigned to the right jobs where they can contribute most effectively to the productivity and profitability of your enterprise. Hence, finding the right employee for the job is essential in a sound recruitment practice.I understand that what confronts small businesses is the capability and competence to attract and recruit the right employees with suitable qualifications. In this case, it is recommended that a temporary recruitment agency should be hired for this purpose. One such BPO provider is TimeRecruitment. It is a small recruitment agency in Edinburg, especially known for its personal approach to candidates and good relationship with clients. Managing a Small Business Debt-Free
2008-01-04 15:40:00
Many of my former colleagues are envious about my freelance work. The common question they asked is how much I invested in this small business. They are always appalled whenever I tell them I never shelled-out a cent. True. Now, you are appalled too. I learned from an old mentor that is best to start your own business without debts or loans to pay. While there are loan facilities and banks that are willing to lend money for young business men or entrepreneurs, I never took that path. I started my office at home, and use the furnishings I have there. I started only purchasing other office equipment, renting an office, and hiring employees when I had already a strong base of clientèles that can support or justify my operational expenses. Hence, I avoided debt all the way. However, if you on the other are in debt right now because of the loan you secured to start your business, it is not yet too late. There are free debt consultants who can help you out of that difficult situatio...

Secrets to Entrepreneurial Success in 2008?

Every worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory ~Mahatma Gandhi, India?s famous non-violent political and spiritual leader. No short-cutsNo entrepreneur has waked up the following day and found that he owns and runs one of the largest successful businesses in the country. There is none. For, there are no short cuts to successful entrepreneurship. Some think that the key is having a gut-feel and taking risks at all cost. While others rely on luck and fate.No secretsIf I could think of a better catchy title, I will remove the word ?secrets? in the title, because the requisites for success in entrepreneurship are laid out in the open. The most common problem, I noticed, is either we ignore them or simply prefer to take the ?quick-to-riches? schemes as preached by those who do not regard hardwork and patience as qualities indispensable to those who want to succeed in business.Have you ever wanted to quit y...

Getting a Car Loan
2007-12-25 15:43:00
Twice in my career stints in the corporate world, I availed of car loans as part of my compensation package. Fifteen years ago, that was a big deal whenever I negotiated for compensation. A car loan, instead of a car plan is always a part of compensation package I asked. In one instance, when I asked for it, I was given a company car instead ?free. That was generous. Of course, that was tied-up with my commitment to serve that company for 3 years at least. Anyhow, then, that was a great package. But during the last 10 years, a car, not a car loan is always provided as a part of the standard compensation package.Today, it is entirely different. Should I buy a new or used car, I had to avail of a car loan if my savings will not suffice. The good news though, I will not go shopping for a loan blindly and ill-informed. There are hosts of sites that can easily be consulted. Other than getting the best loan quotes, there is even an auto loan blog that I can immediately refer from ...

To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly. ~Henri BergsonThese change management basics should help you implement organizational changes, consider:Deal with people involved in the change process with patience, gentle humor, grace, persistence, pragmatism, respect, understanding, and support.Take a long and broad view of change, and think about the impact of changes over one, three, and five years.Continue all of the behaviors and processes discussed in the articles below until change has the ?opportunity to become anchored in the culture.? I am reminded of Dr. W. Edwards Deming?s emphasis on ?constancy of purpose.?Set up changes so that people in you organization experience some early wins.Recognize that effective change is usually a realignment of the ?world view,? rather than a program or flavor of the month.People involved in change will need to recognize that change is risky; change can be scary; change can often entail the r...

Who can save on car insurance?
2007-12-18 16:36:00
When you are older, there are some limitations in your activities. But with old age, wisdom and temperance normally come along. While there are limitations, there also perks that older people enjoys, particularly those who are over 50s. One of which is cheaper premiums for over 50s car insurance, life insurance, and home insurance. As I mentioned earlier, people over 50?s are more temperate, and mature. Although, nowadays, these people are now becoming more active and are engaging in lifestyles accorded for younger generations. What does this implies? Commenting on a survey results about the active lifestyles of people over 50s, Dr. Arig Sigman, a psychologist, stated that a new milestone has been set. "It seems that 40 is no longer the milestone where life truly begins and clearly we should all be looking forward to our 50s as the start point of a rich and fulfilling existence."Going back, this also implies that insurance coverage is to be considered seriously by these folks. How to Start Your Business for Losses
2007-12-15 23:51:00
Having a great idea for a small business is nothing when you cannot launch it due to lack of planning and capital. Making money needs money, as the old adage goes. Some start a business on huge capital investment while some from huge capital ?LUCK.? I hope you are not in the latter. If you are on the former, on the other hand, please note that having a huge capital for a small business would guarantee you success. No. Your success hinges on a variety of factors. However, for the sake of this discussion, let me point out ways how to start your small business for losses. You read right. Not profits, but for losses.Get bad credit loans that pay high interest rates. That is a surefire to start losing money even before you started running your business. Repayment for very high interest rates will rob you immediately of potential profits or gains. Study and compare loan offers and rates, and take only the one that suits your small business best.Overspend on non-performing assets and...

Basics of Informal Meeting Management
2007-12-15 23:06:00
Time is a precious commodity that cannot be recovered when wasted. I have always taught my staff that you cannot manage time. What you can however manage is your activities to fit into the allotted time you have. Among the time wasters that ranked high among busy professionals, like me, are informal meetings. Mostly, these are not pre-arranged meetings, and occasionally boils down to senseless chit-chats that robs you of those precious time you need to accomplish your tasks. This usually occurs when some people would drop by at your office without prior appointments, and you are obliged to leave what you are doing and entertain them. They immediately take priority. More, what is frustrating, their agendas or purpose is not really important or urgent. How do you manage these informal meetings?Avoid them. How? By telling people to set-up appointment /s or meetings ahead of time. Make this known to them. It is the ethical, professional, and practical way of doing business. Howe...

Basic Considerations for Car Insurance Purchases
2007-12-15 08:59:00
One of the perks I enjoyed being a manager is the use of the company car. Included is gasoline allowance of 2 gallons per day, maintenance allowance of $100 month, and payment for the annual comprehensive car insurance premiums. Now, as a freelancer, I had to bear all those costs for owning and driving my own car.Auto insurance is mandated by the state. Whenever you register for a new car or renew your expired car registration, you are required to purchase insurance with third party liability lien. So even before the expiration of current insurance, I always keep a file of car insurance quotes in my drawer for ready referencing. I do not merely get an insurance to comply with state regulations; I always get what serves me well. Some basic considerations I take are the extent of coverage for repairs in cases of accidents, coverage for medical expenses should a person get injured on the accident, and coverage for cost of damages on property. It important to purchase auto insuran...

Workplace Signpost #2: Promoting Camaraderie
2007-12-14 03:53:00
Camaraderie is defined as a feeling of close friendship and trust among a group of people. Don?t you know that according to Industrial Psychologists, this kind of feeling is a great motivator for employees' high performance? When employees feel that they are an integral part of your organization, and feel that they have important part in achieving your goals, they will work to meet your expectations with gusto. They will work harder, smarter, and happier for you. But how do you develop and promote camaraderie among them? Here a 3 practical ways to promote camaraderie among your employees:Rally them in an informal social gathering. Inexpensive family picnics sponsored by your company twice a year can be a good venue for them to develop this camaraderie spirit. Besides, these gatherings could be great opportunities for you to observe them how they behave outside the workplace; hence you will be more effective when dealing with them at work. Effective managers are those who are a...

Attendance and Time Sheets: How to Prevent Employees? Cheats
2007-12-11 22:54:00
When I was still playing balls with in the corporate world, I have been known as the manager with an uncompromising value regarding employees? time and attendance. Unknown to some of my colleagues, or probably they simply ignore, time is the biggest contributing factor in employee?s productivity and the company?s profitability. It is always misused, if not, abused. As an HR Professional, I police this department ?zealously? ?I meant that term.Having said those, how do we prevent our employees? from cheating their attendance and time logs? Remember the old adage: prevention is better than the cure? While most managers and business owners delve on solving or addressing employees? tardiness and frequent absenteeism, I on the other hand, focus on finding preventive mechanism to these perennial issues. Here is how:Policy. Write and implement an attendance policy that is simple, direct, and easy to follow. Impose it to the letter. Do not place any grace periods. Yeah. In this depart...

Payday Loans: An Alternative to Company Loans

Wage increases, salary disparities among employees of the same level, unpaid bonuses, and the non-granting of company loans. What are company loans? These are loan facilities that may take the form of car plans, tuition fee subsidies for continuing education and training, medical assistance and cash loans, among others. An Alternative Benefits for Retiring Employees
2007-12-07 20:04:00
As an employer, big or small business, we are duty-bound to take care of our employees until their retirement. For most of us, this would mean cost. But in a broader perspective, that is if you consider your employees as your number one asset, employee benefits are considered to be investments rather than costs.A practical HRM System in place would surely have established a benefits package for retiring employees. Although, employees who retire are still capable of fending for themselves out of their pensions or social security benefits, it pays that as part of our corporate social responsibility we consider allocating resources for care home facility when they needed to avail one. BetterCaring, for example has an ideal facility that can meet this particular requirement. They have a holistic approach in caring for retirees. ?With BetterCaring you can look at the care options that are available so that you can arrange the right kind of care, read daily care news and views, and re...
