Tune Up Time for Your Irrigation System
2008-01-18 15:51:00 ORLANDO SENTINEL ARTICLETune up time for irrigationA well-maintained system is good for your yard, your wallet and the environment. Here's what you can do.Tom MaccubbinSpecial to the SentinelApril 1, 2007Modern irrigation systems are so automatic that we tend to forget all about them. You might be asleep or off to work when yours is watering the lawn and ornamental plantings during the more-efficient early morning hours. But do you really know what your sprinklers are doing?Sure, you see the damp spots along the sidewalk, and maybe the water hits your car, too. But are the sprinklers also watering the grass, trees, shrubs and flower beds? Many gardeners never know there is a problem with irrigation systems until the grass and ornamental plants start to die, says Bruce Hage, owner of Bruce Hage Irrigation in Orlando."If you take care of the irrigation system now, you won't have to worry about dead grass later on," says Hage. "It's best to check the system at least once a month afte... More About: System , Time
Locating Sprinkler Valves
2007-12-07 18:41:00 Irrigation solenoid valves are the gatekeepers to your sprinkler heads. They are connected to the water source for your irrigation and control the flow of water to each sprinkler "zone" or section. If you have a five zone system you have five valves.Quality solenoid valves are built to perform under adverse conditions. They lay quietly in the ground doing their job year after year, covered in dirt and water. As with any equipment that is made up of moving parts, they will eventually wear out and fail.Sprinkler valves generally fail in one of three ways: * They will stick open and run 24 hours a day until the water source is turned off.*They will constantly leak a small amount of water, known as "weeping".*Or they will not turn on at all.The problem is that after 15-20 years of being out of site and out of mind, when they fail---how do you find them? The best and easiest way to locate a valve is with a specialized tool called a valve locater. However, these devices are expensive to pur... More About: Loca
Rain Sensors for Automatic Irrigation Systems
2007-12-06 23:25:00 Automatic sprinkler system controllers are programmed to go on and off on a certain day and at a certain time. The controller does not know if it is sunny and dry outside or raining. For this reason every lawn sprinkler system should have a rain sensor. The rain sensor determines whether or not enough rainfall has occurred in order to skip an irrigation cycle. There are three basic types of rain sensors. They all serve the same purpose: keeping your system from over-watering the turf or your garden. How does it do that? The electrical connection between the sensor and your sprinkler system controller is interrupted when a certain amount of rain triggers the device. The sensor breaks the electrical connection so that electricity cannot flow to either the sprinkler valves or to a pump start (if your system is on a well without a pressure tank). One type breaks the connection by weighing the water in a rainfall collection cup. The problem with this type is that leaves, sticks, or the occas... More About: Rain , Automatic , Systems , Irrigation
8 Water Saving Tips To Put You On Track
2007-11-28 17:48:00 Tips: Saving Water Outdoors1. Don?t overwater your lawn ? no more than once a week in the winter or twice a week in the summer. A good rain eliminates the need for watering for up to two weeks. Buy a rain gauge. Most of the year, lawns only need one inch of water per week.2. Plant it smart. Xeriscape landscaping is a great way to design, install and maintain both your plants and irrigation system. It will save time, money and water.3. Water lawns during the early morning hours when temperatures and wind speed are the lowest. This reduces evaporation and waste.4. Position sprinklers so water lands on the lawn and shrubs and not on paved areas.5. Install irrigation devices that are the most water efficient for each use. Micro and drip irrigation and soaker hoses are examples of efficient devices.6. Check sprinkler systems and timing devices regularly to be sure they operate properly. Florida law now requires that ?anyone who purchases and installs an automatic lawn sprinkler system MU... More About: Tips , Track

Water: Them Are Fightin' Words, Ma'am
2007-11-09 01:06:00 With respect to meeting growing demand, what measures have Floridians taken to curb consumption or expand water supply?Interesting question. The question came from an University of Florida Essay I found on line.Based on an article I read yesterday about a water bottling company headed our way to suck out the water for a profit---I would ask a different question for the long term: HOW can we ask Floridian's to do their part when the St. John 's River Water Management District is sending out two conflicting messages? They are guiding Floridians to conserve our precious water supply on one hand (how much are they spending on those public service announcement commercials), while they are ushering our water out by the truck load by approving new permits for the corporations to drive our water to other states. The two messages collide into one raging river of mixed messages and conflicting duties.Floridians might be left up a creek without a paddle if we don't make changes in this for-pr... Why should we care if we manage our water wisely?
2007-11-04 17:15:00 Water Efficiency, Human Health, and the EnvironmentDepleting reservoirs and groundwater aquifers can put water supplies, human health, and the environment at serious risk. Lower water levels can lead to higher concentrations of natural contaminants, such as radon and arsenic, or human pollutants, such as agricultural and chemical wastes. Using water more efficiently helps maintain supplies at safe levels, protecting human health and the environment.(source: EPA)Subscribe to RSS More About: Care , Water , Manage

Water: Show Me The Money
2007-11-02 17:10:00 Water - Cashing In On An Environmental IssueBy Kay Fortinberry Borglum, M.S.www.IrrigationRepair.comYou?ve heard the adage that water and oil don?t mix. But don?t be surprised if they play out their role as vital assets in the same sand box.Just look to our neighbors in the western U.S., specifically Las Vegas, Nevada, to measure just how important water is at this moment.Water? The same valuable natural asset status as oil? Who would have thought that could ever be the case?Actually, a hundred years ago President Theodore -Teddy- Roosevelt did. "The nation behaves well if it treats its natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired, in value."This famous quote by President Roosevelt in 1907 to the United States Congress was one of many oracle examples of a man ahead of his own generation?s individual and industrialized bad habits. His speeches unveiled an intellectual understanding of conservation and environmental stewardship... More About: Money , Show , Water , Show Me the Money
Managing a Tolerant Lawn
2007-10-25 22:46:00 Allow your lawn to dry out between waterings. This will help in promoting a drought tolerant lawn. A good way to determine whether it's time to water is by walking on the grass. If the blade set that you walked over doesn't spring back to up-right, it's definitely thirsty. Lawns need only approximately 1 inch of water per week, which is plenty of water to reach deep into the soil where the root system awaits.Subscribe to RSS
