What Type of Valve Is This?
2007-09-21 22:14:00
Here is a question I received from Jeremy in Tampa:I have a digital automated system with electronic irrigation control valves. Zone 3 won't come on unless I manually turn the valve. I've checked the wiring at both ends and it all seems fine. It used to work fine and only recently quit. It looks similar to all three of the photos attached except it has the manual handle on top of the solenoid. I think it might be the Champion valve with the handle added. The bleed screw and top look similar. I've opened the bleed screw a few times and the system comes on each time just fine, but it won't come on electronically. I'm guessing it's a bad solenoid. Am I correct? is there any further testing I need to do? I'll try to get a photo of it tonight when I get home so you can see exactly what it looks like and maybe you can identify what brand it is so that I can buy the proper solenoid. Thanks,JeremyHi Jeremy,By ?I?ve checked the wiring at both ends? do you mean that you took ...

Lawn Sprinkler Controller Replacement
2007-08-04 17:03:00
Changing out an old controller to a new one is quite simple. The steps are outlined for you in this do-it-yourself article. When you have done it once, you will realize how easy it is. Lawn sprinkler timers are the ?brain? of your irrigation system. It tells your valves or zones when to turn on and for how long they are to run. Until approximately 15 years ago, mechanical controllers were the norm. Since then digital controllers have all but made the mechanical controllers obsolete. How do you know which type of controller you have? If you have a digital controller, it will have a display screen indicating what day it is and what time it is. All mechanical clocks have a ?wheel? or dial that you turn by hand to set the day and time. The mechanical controllers do not have a digital display. Keep in mind, any system with moving parts requires maintenance or replacement. Whether it is parts for your automobile, for example, or parts of your sprinkler system, nothing...

Sprinkler Repair Tip: Rain Shut-Off Devices
2007-08-04 16:12:00
Have you seen lawn sprinklers running while it?s raining? It doesn?t have to be that way.Automatic sprinkler system controllers are programmed to go on and off on a certain day and at a certain time. The controller does not know if it is sunny and dry outside or raining. For this reason every lawn sprinkler system should have a rain sensor. The rain sensor determines whether or not enough rainfall has occurred in order to skip an irrigation cycle. There are three basic types of rain sensors. They all serve the same purpose: keeping your system from over-watering the turf or your garden. How does it do that? The electrical connection between the sensor and your sprinkler system controller is interrupted when a certain amount of rain triggers the device. The sensor breaks the electrical connection so that electricity cannot flow to either the sprinkler valves or to a pump start (if your system is on a well without a pressure tank). One type breaks the connection by weighing the water ...

Irrigation Licensing: Irrigation Repair versus Irrigation Installation
2007-07-29 21:07:00
To do irrigation repair in most states, you do not need a special irrigation contractor license, as long as you are only providing repairs and not new installations. Check with your local government. Some states require a specialized contractor?s license to perform irrigation installations. For example, in Florida, were I live, most counties require a license for installation; I repeat---this is for installation. You will need to pull a permit so that the installation can be inspected to make sure you have the correct backflow device and a rain sensor. To do repairs, you do not need a special contractor?s license, as long as your business license does not say irrigation. For example, if you apply for a business license as ?Joe Smith Irrigation ,? you would be asked for a contractor?s card as it is assumed that you would be installing new systems. If you applied for your business license as ?Joe Smith Services? as a handyman license you can repair all the sprinklers you want. You can ad...
