Fax Backs Can be a Pain!

As a notary, you'll have the greatest opportunity to earn income working as a Loan Signing Agent, and after four years in this profession I have gotten used to many things - last minute signings, e-docs (loan docs that are electronically transmitted so that you can print them), keeping a smile on your face when in front of a difficult borrower, etc. But one thing that I still do not like are fax backs!This is when the company that has contracted you requires you to fax back a portion of the loan documents after the signing for their review. I know it is a necessary evil in some instances but when I have to fax back 20 pages and more I am a little irritated.I mean what are they doing with all this extra paper?! You are overnighting the documents back to them so what is the big deal.I could understand if they were asking for just the notarized documents to review so they can catch any errors early but I just faxed over 50 pages for a Countrywide loan and only three of the pages were ...

Do I Use an Acknowledgment or Jurat?

In order to notarize a document the document has to include the correct notarial wording. When a notary is asked to notarize a document without the correct wording then often times a loose leaf certificate is attached. The signer, not the notary, must choose which type of loose leaf certificate to attach, an acknowledgment or a jurat.According to the 2008 CA Notary Handbook the acknowledgment is the form most completed by the notary and includes the following:The certificate of acknowledgment must be in the form set forth in Civil Code section 1189. Too Busy to Think Straight!

Today was one of "those" days... It started at 6:30 a.m. and did not end until 10 p.m. In total, I completed three loan signings, one non-loan notarization and spent 3 1/2 hours at the Tai Pei Consulate. Let's just say I'm pooped!I traveled from Long Beach to San Pedro back to Long Beach to Los Angeles to Carson back to Long Beach to Cerritos back to Long Beach and then home. At the end of the day my odometer reading had increased by 118 miles!I started the day knowing it was going to be busy but I just had not imagined my trip to Los Angeles would take so long. I have taken documents to be apostilled by the State of CA but I have never had to make a trip to a consulate office before so I was green to the process and the wait!Even though I'm incredibly tired I would do it all over again. You can't beat the variety of this business.

I Passed My Notary Exam!

As I was explaining in my previous blog, I recently had to renew my notary commission. Well, yesterday I found out I passed with a score of 87!With a test consisting of only 30 questions there isn't much room for error. Even though I am aware of the ends and outs being a notary, taking a test on the subject can be a little nerve racking.Now I am off to get my fingerprints...

It's Time to Renew My Notary License

You would think after being a notary for four years the State of California would make renewing your license a little easier. Well, I am hear to report that unfortunately it has gotten even more complicated.In order to renew your license as of January 1, 2008 you will need to do four things:Complete a state approved 6-hour training coursePass the 30 question notary examSubmit a new application along with a 2x2 passport pictureLastly, you must get re-fingerprinted so that the Secretary of State and the Department of Justice have your fingerprints on fileIf you are renewing your license you do not want to wait until the last minute to do so, it is recommended that you give yourself 4-6 months before your license expiration. The whole process was nerve racking but I did find a few things that made my life a little easier.First, I completed my 6-hour training online through Golden State Notary . Riding Metro Makes My Day Easier

Due to an increase in the California Apostille service portion of my business I have needed to make more trips to the SOS's office in Downtown Los Angeles.Thankfully, I have discovered the convenience of riding the Metro Line into L.A.Los Angeles is notorious for bad traffic, and where previously you only worried about hitting traffic during the morning and evening rush hours, now there seems to be traffic ALL day, every day.Taking the train does not lessen the time of the ride by much but it does save on gas and headaches from sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. According to AAA my $5 day pass would have cost me $12.80 at a little over 56.2 a mile so thanks to the convenience of riding the train I arrive home headache free with my California Apostille in hand.

Apostille to France

Recently, I had the pleasure of completing a couple of California Apostilles going to France for a lovely French women. In order to continue collecting her French social security (attestation d'existence pour le paiement des retraites from the caisse nationale d'assurance vieillesse) and pension (paiement de votre pension) on a yearly basis she has to return a form to France verifying that she is still alive.In previous years it was enough for her just to have the form notarized but this year they sent it back stating that they required an Apostille. Because she resides in California, she needed an Apostille from California.I was happy to be able to provide this service for her, as she is an older woman who does not drive so it would have been very difficult for her to complete this herself. She was very grateful that she was able to find someone to complete this service (Apostille) for her.

One way to increase your chances of success as a notary is to network with other notaries. An easy way to do this is to read and participate on the many popular notary boards, such as Notary Rotary, Go Mobile Notary, and Mobile Notary Network (view MyNotarySource for a comprehensive list). There you will find new and experienced notaries that you can learn from, get your questions answered and exchange marketing ideas with. When you first log on to a board it is always good to read and get a feel for the board before you post. Once you feel comfortable you can introduce yourself to let your voice be heard. The board I recommend the most for newbies is Mobile Notary Network because the notaries are friendly and helpful.Another way to network with other notaries is contact local notaries in your area to set up a referral system.
