Soft commodities still have further to go
2008-02-25 14:13:00
In 2007, wheat prices rose 90%, soybeans were up 80% and all other soft commodities started charging higher. But don?t be intimated by the gains so far. These softs are not overvalued. In fact, they are set to go much, much higher over the next few years. So, if you are not invested in agriculture now, I think you may live to regret it.The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) now expects wheat inventories in the country to fall a staggering 40% by June this year.... This would leave wheat stocks at their lowest level in 30 years - and the lowest ever in terms of days of supply - according to Merrill Lynch. World barley stocks are expected to hit a 42-year low.Globally, grain stockpiles fell to about 53 days of supply last year, the lowest level since record-keeping began in 1960.The USDA forecast that US wheat harvests could rise to 2.3 billion bushels from 2.1 billion bushels last year, but corn production looks set to ease to 12.8 billion bushels from 13.1 billion bushels last year....

Mutual Funds: Fund Objective and Style
2008-01-10 03:33:00
A fund tells you what it wants to achieve and how it plans to do it.Each mutual fund has an investment objective ? a goal or financial result it wants to realize. And each fund manager has an investment style, which is the approach he or she follows in making investments to achieve the fund's goal. Most fund objectives fit into one of several broad categories, such as growth in value, current income, or a combination of growth and income. For example, a growth fund selects investments that seem likely to increase in value over time. An income fund, on the other hand, targets investments that it expects to generate revenue, such as stock dividends.Style s are harder to classify than objectives, since many factors contribute to the way a manager makes investment decisions. But there are several well-recognized approaches, including styles that stress growth, those that stress value, and those that stress capital preservation.Together, the fund's objective and style give you a general ...

Bonds: The Basics
2008-01-10 03:28:00
Companies and governments pay for some of their expenses by borrowing money from individual investors.Just as you may borrow money for major expenses if you don't have enough cash on hand, so may businesses and governments. Sometimes they borrow from a bank, as you needed a mortgage to buy a new home. But they can also borrow by issuing a bond that promises to pay investors a fixed percentage of interest for the use of their money. The Pros and Cons of Bonds The Value of DebtFrom an investor's standpoint, what bonds provide is a stream of interest payments. In retirement, for example, your bond interest may be an essential source of income. In fact, that's one reason many financial advisers suggest increasing the amount you have invested in bonds as you grow older.Even if you don't need the income to live on, interest on bonds can provide a regular infusion of cash for your investment account. For example, suppose you had $40,000 in bonds earning 5% interest that paid you $2,000 a...

Buying Stocks
2008-01-10 03:24:00
Buying stocks isn't hard, but the process has its own rules, its own language and a special cast of characters. To buy or sell a stock, you usually use a traditional or online brokerage firm, an investment firm that is licensed to buy and sell securities by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). These firms are also known as broker-dealers.You may also be able to buy stock directly from the company that issues it through a direct stock plan (DSP) or a dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP). A number of large companies offer these plans and charge only a minimal fee to handle your transactions. What's in a Name?Though you probably use the term broker to describe all the professionals who buy and sell stocks, the financial markets use titles to describe more precisely the ways securities change hands.Brokers handle buy and sell orders placed by individual and institutional clients. They may earn a commission on each transaction or receive an annual fee based on the value of the clie...

Why Options?
2008-01-10 03:23:00
Before exploring the various trading strategies, it is important to understand what is an option, specifically what is a call and put.A Call OptionIn the case of an equity option, a contract that gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to purchase a set amount of stock (usually 100 shares) at a predetermined price anytime before the contract expires (American Style option) or at expiration only (European Style Option). The predetermined price is known as the strike price.A Put OptionIn the case of an equity option, a contract that gives the holder the right, but not the obligation, to sell a stock at a set price for limited period of time. The seller or writer of the option is obligated to buy the stock at the strike price in the event that the option is assigned. Build Trading System
2008-01-10 03:20:00
In today?s option trading blog I want relect back on my first days as a pro. I remember sitting in front of the screen and wondering ? now what? Where do I start?Successful traders have a systematic decision-making approach that they have refined. They follow the same steps time after time. Some have quantitative earnings models that end with a physical tour of the company. Others have software programs that identify pricing relationships and disparities. Others might have technical analysis filters that target inflection points. The list is endless, but ultimately, they all have a system. A standardized routine with a well defined beginning, middle and end exists. Before you start your quest, take inventory and identify your trading style and expertise. Look closely at your successes and failures. What characteristics are common to all of the good trades? How about the bad trades? This process will help you recognize situations to seek and avoid. A trade log can help you with this s...

Option Trading Basic
2008-01-10 03:18:00
In today?s option trading blog I will address some important concepts for the novice option trader. Options trading gets so much press these days that it?s hard for traders to determine where to go and who to trust. I believe there is a natural progression to the whole process and it can?t be rushed. Options are not a get rich scheme that you can jump into. Do people make a lot of money trading options? Yes, they also lose a lot of money. The risk and reward is elevated and every mistake is magnified. Here are some points to consider if you are just getting started.1. Become a good stock picker first. Before you can become a good option trader, you need to be able to analyze stocks. Options are merely an extension of your stock opinion.2. Read, read, read. I would start with books on technical and fundamental analysis. John Murphy and Martin Pring have authored excellent books on technical analysis. Peter Lynch, William O?Neil and Warren Buffet have written excellent books fundament...

Hedge-fund group makes recommendations
2008-01-10 03:17:00
While the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the U.S. Congress have been trying to increase hedge-fund regulation for the last couple of years, the hedge-fund industry took a step toward policing itself in early November. The Managed Fund s Association (MFA) expanded and updated recommendations it made to members in 2005 after a government group suggested the industry needed more self-regulation.The report, which sought input from hedge-fund managers, financial executives, accountants, and investors, focuses on a few major points.Overall, the MFA wants to make sure all fund managers are on the same page when it comes to internal policies and practices. The report states, ?MFA has developed and updated the recommendations in the belief that the most effective form of industry oversight is self-discipline and self-monitoring by hedge-fund managers as part of a shared responsibility with market counterparties, investors, and regulators. The recommendations should enhance the a...

Designing and testing a pattern-based trading system
2008-01-10 03:16:00
We expand a study of multi-day highs and lows into a promising short-term reversal system.BY HOWARD BANDYA recent article (?Market facts: Three-day pivots,? Active Trader, August 2007) analyzed 10 years of S&P 500 data and showed Monday was most often a three-day pivot high between April 16, 1997 and April 11, 2007, while Wednesday was most often a three-day pivot low during this period. This article takes the analysis a little further and develops a technique for turning those observations into a trading system. We begin by making two observations. First, it?s impossible to tell that any day is a three-day pivot until the market establishes an intraday range three days after the pivot day. Second, we cannot buy the low or sell the high. However, we can make some adjustments to be able to trade on estimations of these. A day cannot be a three-day pivot low unless it is a four-day low. That is, the low of a three-day pivot low day is lower than the lowest low of the three previous days....

2008-01-10 03:15:00
Riding the coattails of insider buyers might offer a trading edge for the rest of us.BY DAVID BUKEYSeveral days after Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) fell 8.9 percent overnight on Oct. 20, 2005, Director Peter A. Magowan bought $7.5 million of Caterpillar stock. Magowan bought this large stake when CAT traded just above its three-month low. The stock jumped 51.65 percent within six months. This purchase wasn?t confidential, because the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires ?insiders? ? all officers and directors of publicly traded companies ? to report any trades in their stock. Magowan reported this transaction within two days of his initial purchase. But are insiders always good investors? Admittedly, this is a cherry-picked example; not all insiders buy at such fortuitous times. However, when insiders buy their stock directly, they expect it to climb.By contrast, insiders sell their stock for countless reasons ? to diversify their holdings, pay bills, exercise options ? not nece...

The Diagonal Backspread
2008-01-10 03:11:00
In a recent report, we examined an option strategy known as the backspread. This week, we examine a related strategy, the diagonal backspread. As we shall see, each type of type of spread has its own risk/reward characteristics, which can make them attractive under different sets of circumstances.Backspread ReviewWith the standard backspread, the investor buys a number of options at a one strike price and then sells a lesser number of options of the same maturity that are struck more deeply in-the-money. (You may want to refer to "Finding and Setting Backspreads," Ot00612.Pdf in our Options Reports Archive). If you set it up properly, a backspread can give you unlimited profits if the stock's movement favors the bias of your long options (i.e. up for calls and down for puts). If time premiums are low enough, there is often a chance that you can establish a backspread at a net credit of premium. Often, for short time periods, backspreads can be almost "risk free" (not counting bid/as...
Backspreads
2008-01-10 03:10:00
This week, we examine the "backspread", an options combination in which the investor buys a certain number of options with a particular strike price and writes a lesser number of options at a strike price that is more deeply in-the-money. The backspread tends to give the investor unlimited profits if the stock's movement favors the bias of the long options, and a finite gain if the stock moves the other way. One advantage of the backspread is that it often can be established at a credit. Another advantage is that over a limited period of time after it is established, it can provide very attractive profit potential with relatively little risk. Backspreads, however, are complicated and not without pitfalls. You should analyze each backspread carefully before you establish it and then monitor it carefully once you have put it on. To do this, we recommend that you use our option position analyzer, Whatifi3.Xls.Same Expiration, More Longs than ShortsWith a call backspread, you buy a gre...

The One-to-One Diagonal Spread
2008-01-10 03:09:00
You create a diagonal spread when you buy and write options (calls or puts, but not both in the same spread) on the same stock with different strike prices and different expirations. As we will show in the examples in this report, diagonal spreads can be used as capital efficient covered call alternatives. Why Diagonal?A bit of folklore: Diagonal spreads are so named because on printed option pricing sheets, options are often listed with the different strike prices as the rows and the different expirations as the columns. Thus, you can draw a diagonal line between the option being bought and the option being sold. Using the same logic, basic bull and bear spreads, which involve buying and selling options with the same expiration but different strike prices, are often called "vertical" spreads (because you can draw a vertical line between the two options). Also, calendar spreads which involve buying and selling options with the same strike price but different expirations are often kno...
