NCC’s ICT compliance initiative
2008-04-25 08:54:00 South East Bureau Chief, Jude Ossai, writes on the efforts of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) to make Nigerians compliant with Information and Communications Technology (ICT).THERE is no gainsaying the fact that enhancement of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) capacity of most Nigerians is a challenge confronting the nation’s communications sector. The reality is that many Nigerians, including the lettered ones, are still far from being computer literate. However, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Chief Ernest Ndukwe, has achieved feats through his telecommunication revolution specifically between February 2000 and December 2007 when the nation’s subscriber base grew from 0.4 million to 42 million. The dominance of ICT-induced activities in the international community, which has become a global trend, will render every educated person and professional that are not ICT compliant illiterate.Ndukwe had no better f... 2008-04-25 08:47:00 Travelers crisscrossing the air over Europe will soon have a new way to occupy their time while en route: using their cell phones during flights. The European Union (EU) on Monday announced plans to begin licensing in-flight use of wireless communications devices and services.Service providers interested in launching offerings for fliers should be able to get EU approval before 2008 is out, AP reported Monday. Pricing is apparently the prime concern of the EU at this point, with the European Commission emphasizing that it wants to ensure in-flight cell phone service users won’t be unpleasantly surprised when they get their first bill.“We expect operators to be transparent and innovative in their price offerings,” said EU telecom commissioner Viviane Reding, in a Monday statement. “If consumers receive shock phone bills, the service will not take-off.”Reding predicted that, if pricing is managed effectively, this new type of mobile phone service should prove appealing to bu... Shortage of workers to lay cables
2008-03-29 07:06:00 The Electrical and Communications Industry Council is warning of a shortages of skilled workers to lay a broadband fibre-optic network and maintain exchanges. The council is blaming Telecom for not providing enough money to pay competitive wages. Spokesman Joe Gallagher says the workers are moving to Australia because they can double their wages there. He says Telecom is playing contractors against each other to the point where they just don't have the margins to pay staff properly.Gallagher says by refusing to pay the money for decent wages and conditions Telecom is draining the country of people needed to keep telecommunication running. Meanwhile, Telecom should know where it stands on its operational separation by the end of the month.Late last month, Communications Minister David Cunliffe rejected an amended plan from the company. Pornography Sites and Violence Will be Blocked
2008-03-25 09:51:00 TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Minister of Communication and Information, Muhamamad Nuh, announced his department will block internet sites with negative content including pornography sites. “We promised our commitment to APJI and KPI to block the negative sites,” he said after launching the Broadband Learning Center at Al-Akbar mosque, Surabaya, last Friday. This is a response to unease of religious figures to the internet-based Information Technology in places of worship in East Java. They are worried their followers will misuse the internet for pornographic sites.Nuh explained three methods to close negative-content sites. First, dissemination to the public and also giving away software to block the sites. Second, block the network with direct international connection through special software. The network will only be connected to a network inside the country. “If it does not work, there will be a third method, which is blocking directly from central sites that we consider... Tidbits from the ever-changing ICT world
2008-03-17 04:15:00 We all know that the research and development people in the information and communications technologies industry never go to sleep. That is why I receive a lot of press releases, announcements, invitations to product launches, etc. It's getting more and more difficult to find the time to sit in front of my computer and write about them* So, I think this week I'll give you a roundup of what's out there and what's coming.Notebooks on a dietNotebook computers are becoming lighter and thinner; makers seem to be vying against one another in a race to reduce the weight of their products by slimming down the bodies.Earlier this year, Steve Jobs introduced MacBook Air, a notebook that is less than two centimeters thick. It claims to be the world's thinnest notebook (for now) and it fits into an office envelop. Like other Mac computers, style is as strong as the technology. But, then, those who cannot seem to leave Windows and migrate to Mac, the good news came a bit later. Lenovo return... Fiber-optic communication
2008-01-18 03:56:00 Optical fiberAn optical fiber (or fibre) is a glass or plastic fiber designed to guide light along its length. Fiber optics is the overlap of applied science and engineering concerned with the design and application of optical fibers. Optical fibers are widely used in fiber-optic communication, which permits transmission over longer distances and at higher data rates than other forms of communications. Fibers are used instead of metal wires because signals travel along them with less loss, and they are immune to electromagnetic interference. Optical fibers are also used to form sensors, and in a variety of other applications.Light is kept in the "core" of the optical fiber by total internal reflection. This causes the fiber to act as a waveguide. Fibers which support many propagation paths or transverse modes are called multimode fibers (MMF). Fibers which support only a single mode are called singlemode fibers (SMF). Multimode fibers generally have a large-diameter core, and are us... More About: Communication
