Babelgum, the future rival of Joost, is warming up
2007-03-09 00:10:10 Asides Joost making buzz rounds and announcing deals with Viacom or JumpTV, there’s another IPTV to keep an eye on. Babel gum, a cool name for a broadband television service targeting young adult audience, is launched in beta with 500 hours of footage. As Joost, Babelgum has something to do with peer-to-peer technology and doesn’t allow video sharing of its programs. As Joost, Babelgum will include commercials into its streamed broadcasts. And as Joost, supported by Skype’s founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis who sold their company for $2.6 billion, Babelgum is the new venture of Italian billionaire Silvio Scaglia, the largest shareholder in Italy’s number two telco Fastweb, and who before that ran Omnitel, then Vodafone Italy. Right now, Babelgum is in private beta (We’ll try to get some invitations for you.). The public launch is expected in January 2008, according to Erik Lumer, co-founder and CEO of Babel Networks. Shell to turn 100% VoIP
2007-03-09 00:10:10 Sometimes, VoIP early adopters aren’t tech companies. The first beta tester of the upcoming Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Exchange Server 2007 is Royal Dutch Shell , the major oil company. Shell will test the system later this year, and plans to roll the platform into production by early 2008, says group IT architect at the VoiceCON Spring show. The massive plan consists in migrating off of hundreds of disparate PBX systems in more than 110 countries to a centralized VoIP. For the record, the Microsoft Office 2007 will provide “presence” features within its traditional toolbox. Users could then use the features to see the availability of other collaborators for a call or message. More About: Voip , Hell , Turn
Fon raised $13 million to face its rising rivals
2007-03-09 00:10:10 Fon raised another 10 million euros ($13 million), announced Fon CEO Martin Varsavsky on his blog. “Funds were raised from a combination of current investors including myself and 4 non US new strategic investors whose identities we will disclose in the near future.” Proceeds of the round will be used for R&D and growing the number of Foneros around the world, he adds. So far, Fon has grown at a fairly steady pace and showed big names as investors and clients, such as Google and Skype for the investors, and major European telcos like British Telecoms and French ISP Neuf Telecoms. But the competition in the WiFi signal sharing market is rising. Meraki and Whisher are doing the same in the US, a region where Fon network is striving to break into. Skype enables users to charge each other
More articles from this author:2007-03-09 00:10:10 Up to now, you pay Skype to call landline and mobile phones. Skype is now doing the reverse process, beta-launched the Skype Prime which enables paid Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls. User s can charge others to call them either a one-off fee or by the minute. How’s it proceeds: All calls start as free, then call receivers can switch to the paid calling — a good way for consultants to first tease their future clients before charging them, and a good way for clients to check the value of their callers. For the cash, Skype Credit is deducted by the appropriate amount and transfered to the receiver’s special account. Skype Prime provider can get their revenue through PayPal, with Skype keeping 30% of the transaction. Video conferences are also possible. So far, Skype Prime is available on Windows platform only. Bloggers’ reactions: “I believe that the “non-business chat” that accompanies any consulting call is critical to the success of ... More About: Other , Charge , Users 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
