A new craft venue - how exciting!
2008-02-06 16:37:00
The Brooklyn Brownstoner has been hard at work organizing what is sure to be the "biggest and most interesting flea market in the city." Its Brooklyn Flea is set to launch April 6 on the Bishop Loughlin schoolyard on Lafayette Avenue in Fort Greene (map). In their own words, they admit that: "We use the term 'flea market' with both affection and a wink and a nod because...while the Brooklyn Flea will offer plenty of flea market meat-and-potatoes (vintage clothing, music and furniture), it will also have an exciting mix of local designers, artists and crafties."Get excited and find out more by checking out their new blog.

Poop! After many, many months of the most drawn out competition ever (PowerUp! Business Plan Competition), the results are in. And...I didn't win. But I didn't leave empty handed either. I received a PowerUp! branded umbrella (automatic!), a sweet little set of laptop accessories (the miniature mouse is a scientific marvel), and a framed certificate on which I'll be replacing "Honorable Mention" with "Super Duper Craftastic." Actually, I'd first like to replicate it in cross stitch before making that little change in wording, and then it should be just about perfect for hanging in my future office. But seriously, I did come away with a totally buttoned-up business plan, and the validation of having been recognized as a finalist. And while I didn't secure the big bucks as far as prize money goes, I wasn't left empty handed in that regard either. While not enough to start a business - or pay a month's rent - it's money I didn't have before. It's covering the cost of my new se...

I want to win, I really do
2008-01-12 16:23:00
So, after starting my new job, strangely enough, the very exciting news of being a finalist in this business plan competition through me for a loop. I felt conflicted about making the most of a good, solid job v. eventually leaving that behind to stake it own on my own. Even after going before the judges, I actually had the feeling that perhaps if I didn't win anything it would be for the better, because it would take some of the pressure off and help relax that inner conflict.Well, after several months now, I am enjoying my job...but...I REALLY want to win! I like my job - there, I said it - but my thoughts still drift back to how wonderful the store will be, and how that's what I REALLY want to do. So, there you have it. Nothing's changed really I guess. I was worried the job would change things, so it's always good to check in every once in a while to make sure it hasn't.Next step: See how the contest goes (win, win, win...I really hope I win). Well, the calendar is up, but there ain't much on it yet. Further proving the need for such a calendar, not much luck so far gathering info on upcoming events, other than the ones I already know. Send me your events, and I'll get 'em posted!

Keeping track of craft fairs
2007-12-14 00:57:00
Even those in the know, don't always know what's going on. There are a ton of craft fairs going on these days on account of the Holidays. But throughout the rest of the year, there continues to be a lot of craft goings-on in this town whether you realize it or not. It's been suggested on more than one occasion that someone should be keeping track of them, so I figured I'd give it a whirl, but I can't do it without you. Know of a craft fair happening in New York, pass that info along, and I'll get it posted on my coming-soon Craft Fair Calendar. 'Bout dang time, right!?

Finally, I'm Actually a Finalist
2007-11-25 05:09:00
After a solid performance in the prelims, yours truly (again, that wording would work so well if...but I don't wan't to give too much away...) has made it into the finals - hooray! Later this week, I'll be presenting my plan to a panel of judges for the Power Up Business Plan Competition, then crossing my fingers again until January.I am super excited to be in the running, but I'm also pretty psyched that for once my confidence was justified - from day one, I felt like I was putting together a really strong plan, but apparently I'm not the only one who thought it was good. I had also felt good about my ING entry and that Eileen Fisher thing a while back, but nothing ever came of those. When I hadn't heard anything by the middle of November, I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that this one wasn't gonna pan out either. So imagine my surprise when I got a message from the library! Cross your fingers!

And Speaking of Craft Fairs...

The weekend of Dec. 1-2 is gonna be a busy one for yours truly (oh man, that line would have just worked so well if...I don't want to give too much away...). Just in time for the Holiday rush, I'll be peddling some wares and trying to earn a buck or two. All in the name of a good cause of course - me (I think I've thoroughly covered how important my own personal financial health is to this whole business planning business, so no need to elaborate there).Satuday, December 1, 10am - 5 28th Annual Holiday Craft Fair @ Brooklyn Friends School375 Pearl St.Brooklyn, NY*Near Jay St.-Borough Hall stationSunday, December 2, noon - 6the hearts and crafts affair *a holiday craft fair @ Cafe Grumpy the corner of Meserole Ave. and Diamond St.Greenpoint, Brooklyn*Near G - Nassau St. stop (exit at Norman St.)Oh, and check out my new splash page at HandMaidenNY.com - I don't claim to be a great web, or graphic designer, so as a total novice, I'm pretty proud of the animated .gif I made.

TIME to get crafty again!
2007-11-17 01:12:00
In preparation for the next round of craft fairs - 2 in one weekend! - I FINALLY got around to trying my hand at those plate clocks. Now imagine how great this will look on a brightly colored kitchen wall...Materials:1 cute saucer from Goodwill1 power drill1 glass and tile drill bit1 clock making kitsome patienceTips: My first few attempts were unsuccessful on account of a poor quality drill bit - a good little bit goes a long way. After successfully drilling through the first plate however, even the good one seemed noticeably duller, so if you can find a way to keep the bit sharp, bonus!Place the plate on a hard surface, such as a scrap piece of wood, when drilling. To easily locate the center of the plate simply draw an outline of it on a piece of paper, cut it out, fold in quarters, and cut a hole in the center. Use this to mark where to drill.A pilot hole is essential - use a smaller drill bit to make a pilot hole large enough to accommodate just the tip of the larger one, just b...

Well, I am once again a working woman...doing the ol' 9-5 routine. It's not bad (you'll have to excuse me here - I do like my job, but I'm not terribly prone to enthusiasm about such things). As far as office jobs go, and the whole 9-5 thing, my new place of work is very pleasant. It's a place where you can feel good about what you're doing, and in turn, the people who work there are generally happy, nice, and make for good co-workers. All in all, things are going well. My biggest fear going into this whole endeavor was that I'd become complacent and too comfortable, and lose my great ambition to bring HandMaiden to life. Well, granted it's only been a short time, but I don't think THAT will be an issue. Take for instance the fact that I describe my new job as "not bad" (I have confided in others that I do in fact like it). That's just the way I am. I don't think I'll ever truly love a job until it's a job working for myself, and I'm equipped with a keen self-aware...

Time for a makeover already?
2007-09-08 04:06:00
I just revamped the HandMaiden homepage (www.HandMaidenNY.com) in order to incorporate and unveil the logo. Check it out! I am pretty psyched on the logo, however when paired with the new name that's been circulating around, it becomes even better!

Here's Hope-ING
2007-09-02 17:06:00
Only a week until I submit my Business Plan to the BPL's Power Up Competition! But in the meantime, I came across an ING-sponsored essay contest that could be worth a pretty little penny. All it required was a 250-word essay on my goal for saving money, and a supporting photo. In a nutshell, that's me having 'stepped off the career "track",' dreaming of my amazing craft store while knitting a scarf (bonus points available for using the color orange). I feel good about my odds. I don't think I'll win the Grand Prize or anything - those chances are slim - but there are 25 First Prizes up for grabs, and since it is entirely based on what I submitted rather than the luck of the draw...who knows.

I got a new job! So, things aren't quite official yet, but suffice it to say - I got a new job. Super-duper exciting stuff for me personally, and in time, it should prove good news for HandMaiden NY (a.k.a. as yet to be named amazing craft store) as well. New job=financial stability=more savings, all of which over time (how much time? a bit more than previously planned)=successfully starting a new business. Told you I was good at math.
