Fuel Prices Rise, Worry For Investors.
2008-06-04 14:26:00 Discontent with the quantum of the fuel price hike, the market came under severe pressure as investors dumped shares across the board. Concerns that the hike would accelerate inflation, which is already at worryingly high levels, and that cost pressures could squeeze corporate profits took a toll on sentiment. The government today raised petrol and diesel prices by about 10 per cent on Wednesday, the biggest increase in recent times, to curb losses at its state-run refiners. However, the rise is expected to lift annual inflation to 13-year highs above 9 percent in early June, analysts forecast. Data last Friday showed annual inflation running at 8.1 per cent on May 17, its highest in more than 3.5 years. The hike on petrol and diesel prices was by Rs 5 and Rs 3 a litre respectively, that of LPG by Rs 50 a cylinder while kerosene prices were kept unchanged. The hike will be effective from midnight. The government is understood to have taken an in-principle decision to increase the prices of petrol and diesel, even as the policy managers are debating a cut in customs duty on both crude and petroleum products. The finance ministry on Thursday eased the ceilings on external commercial borrowings (ECBs) by companies. The move comes as a relief to the industry, which grew merely 3% in March — the slowest in six years — amid a tight domestic monetary policy that pushed interest rates up to six-year highs. The government also raised the ceilings on foreign investments into government and corporate bonds, in a bid to deepen the bond market. The idea is to enhance volumes in the debt market and evolve it as a reliable means of raising resources, particularly to improve infrastructure and to sustain economic growth. Analysts expect the rupee to weaken further, reviving investor confidence in the beaten down IT sector. "The outlook for the rupee is bearish for the short term. With no intervention from the RBI to limit the rupee slide, coupled with the fact that US Federal Reserve is not expected to cut rates further and spiralling crude oil prices, makes the case weak for the rupee to strengthen against the dollar at least in the short term," said Harit Shah, research analyst at Angel Broking.
