You Just Have To Love Doctors…..Not!!
2008-02-26 00:00:00
I have frequently been dismayed by how doctors don’t share information with their patients. They seem to have some 7th sense that lets them know whether a patient will be able to understand the information, so it goes in their records and comes back to bite them in the rear years later when a life ...

There Is A Difference!
2008-02-26 00:00:00
I just spent the last week working with a gentleman who had applied for life insurance through Selectquote and was approved, but wanted a second opinion on what products were available to him. Over the course of a week I presented multiple options to accomplish what he thought he wanted to do, something he said Selectquote ...

Why Term Insurance?
2008-02-26 00:00:00
I field a high number of calls asking about whether people should buy term insurance, universal life or whole life, and in some cases they will have heard of, and ask about return of premium term insurance. Now is not the time to hold back my feelings on this, so I am going to lay out ...

2008-02-22 00:00:00
I swear, where a year ago I was thinking New York would probably miss this century also, they have now rocked the life insurance world by approving return of premium term insurance for sale. Return of premium has been available in the rest of the country for years, but today ING Reliastar the first ever ROP ...

The No Policyowner Left Behind Act!!
2008-02-22 00:00:00
I was reading an aricle in a trade publication today concerning orphan life insurance policyholders. No, this isn’t some group of lost children’s life insurance clients. An orphan, in the industry sense, is a client whose agent has moved, died, or more likely taken all too common route today of treating a sale as a ...

Globesity Battle!! It Ain’t Over Til The Obese Lady Sings!
2008-02-21 00:00:00
Whether or not you agree that there is an obesity epidemic, you would have to have on some pretty serious blinders to not see that lifestyle changes over the past 40 years have definitely packed the pounds on the average US citizen, if not the whole world. An article I read today was referring to an ...

The Truth Is Out! Bipolar Is Not An Automatic Decline For Life Insurance!
2008-02-20 00:00:00
As the word sneaks out a little further each day, I have more and more people contacting me and asking if it’s true. Can they get life insurance at affordable rates even though they have bipolar disorder? I wish I could claim that the answer is unequivocally yes, but that isn’t true for any portion ...

Politics And Life Insurance!
2008-02-19 00:33:00
There are a couple of reasons this upcoming election could have an impact in the life insurance realm. For most of us poor folks you would think that estate taxes wouldn’t be a big issue. I think it’s significant no matter who you are. Just to recap the journey that estate tax law has been on, back in 2000 estate taxes had to be paid on any estate over $600,000. The $600,000 is called an exemption meaning that much of your estate is exempt from taxes and can be passed to your heirs tax free. What was happening was that people were working all of their lives to build up businesses like ranches and farms, and the more successful they were, the more the federal government got when they died. Because there is also a rule that says the taxes have to be paid within nine months, this often creates a fire sale situation where full value is not realized. It was not unusual to see businesses worth $2-$3 million be sold for pennies on the dollar to meet the tax obligation, leaving ...

Snow As A Stress Test!
2008-02-16 00:00:00
I admit that I am something of a whiner when it comes to cold and snow. I am often asked, if that’s true, why I live in Colorado? The answer lies mostly outside the winter months. Snow has been building up, or at least not going away since late November. A few weeks ago we finally ...

Busted for Drinking While Eating Meat!
2008-02-14 00:00:00
We’ve often discussed in this forum that one of the most prevalent risk factors associated with obesity is the increased risk of cancer. Scientists are narrowing down some of the worst culprits of obesity and their role in that increased risk. Processed meats win the prize for the worst thing you can do for yourself if ...

Diet And Exercise Can Work, Even If You Are The Fattest Person In The World
2008-02-14 00:00:00
OK! Most of us only feel like the fattest person in the world occasionally. And we whine when diet and exercise aren’t producing the results we really want, but are we trying hard enough? There is no arguing that obesity is a problem, but this guy takes the cake and ate it too. Manuel Uribe from ...

What Happens To Your Business The Day After You Die?
2008-02-14 00:00:00
Small businesses, the backbone of American employment, often run by the slimmest of margins. I’m not talking about profit margins. I’m referring to the owner or one of the owners being just a heart attack away from leaving their family with the business or a partner trying to figure out how to buy the deceased ...

Federal Government Responsible For Obesity Epidemic!!
2008-02-13 00:00:00
Report after report talk about rampant, out of control obesity. MacDonald’s is to blame. Television and video games are to blame. I’m sure there are reports out there that directly blame my mother’s chocolate chip cookies. Somehow I ate them and didn’t get fat, but the rest of the country did and it’s my mom’s ...

I’ll Never Live That Long……Maybe!
2008-02-13 00:00:00
When I’ve talked to people about universal life insurance products that have guarantees to 120 and longer, I’m often met with a bit of skepticism. People can’t seem to comprehend the idea of living past 100 even though it appears to be a popular past time. My own parents are a good study in this issue. ...

When Your Life Insurance Agent Quits Calling!
2008-02-10 00:00:00
I was visiting with a person Friday about his experience applying for life insurance through a “mega agency”. He applied last August and ran into an issue with an elevated PSA on his labs. The company postponed the application until he had a urologist’s workup, including a biopsy to rule out prostate cancer. This person complied ...

I Found Someone More Ignorant About Life Insurance Than Suze Orman!
2008-02-09 00:00:00
Well, I certainly haven’d hidden the fact that my opinion of Suze Orman’s opinion on all matters life insurance is lower than a lizard’s belly. She is product ignorant and a few bubbles off when it comes to common sense on the subject. Now comes Walter Updegrave who has earned himself the title of Senior Editor ...

Hold On Partner! Step Back From My Blood Sugar!
2008-02-08 00:00:00
Well, just when life insurance underwriters and doctors think they’re on the same page, and they believe it’s the right page, someone kicks the door down and throws a wrench in their thinking. In search of a way to control diabetes, and specifically type 2 diabetes, the goal has alway been lower glucose levels. The American ...

Diabetes And Bipolar Have More In Common Than I Thought!
2008-02-08 00:00:00
I have often made the life insurance underwriting comparison between diabetes and bipolar disorder. In simple terms, what is needed to get the best possible rates is compliance with prescribed treatment and good control. The good control is of course different with diabetes control being measured through blood tests, specifically the hbA1c. Good control with bipolar ...

If (Whole) Life Was Just That Simple!
2008-02-05 00:00:00
There are two distinctively different schools of thought on how to provide life insurance for your family. One shcool of thought would have you load your policy with cash value on the premise that the cash value can be a savings or retirement account. Whole Life . The other school of thought would have you insure ...

Bipolar Treatment Not A Bad Idea For All Of Us!
2008-02-04 00:00:00
I read a list of lifestyle choices today that, if most of us instituted them in our lives, would probably make positive changes. Oddly enough, the list came from Bipolar .com, an excellent site for those with bipolar or those living with someone who has bipolar disorder. Balance and stability, as I’ve mentioned in several posts, are ...

Bipolar Seeking Good Life Insurance Rates?
2008-02-03 00:00:00
The deeper I get involved with the life insurance possibilities for people with bipolar disorder, the more I am convinced that it has not been an intentionally abused block of clients as much as it has been and understudied and overlooked group. When I was first approached about bipolar underwriting it was from a person who ...

Put A Political Spin On This One!
2008-02-03 00:00:00
With all the political spin put on health care and how to handle all of those who are uninsured or under insured, maybe, just maybe, the emphasis ought to be on education and prevention as much as or even more than treatment. A study just released shows that type 2 diabetes is exacting a heavy toll, ...

Take That Aspirin Before The Super Bowl!
2008-02-03 00:00:00
No. I’m not suggesting that a pre game aspirin will ward off a post game hangover. I’m afraid that those prone to toast every down and play will have to deal with the consequences post game. There may be good reason to do some pre-game heart attack prevention though. It seems that the “big game”, whether ...

Let’s Use A Little Common Sense!
2008-02-02 00:00:00
While I generally agree with most family history guidelines that life insurance underwriters use, there are times when common sense simply has to override the guidelines. After all, they are called underwriting guidelines, not rules. I’ve had to defend family history underwriting on plenty of cases. Probably the biggest bone of contention is when a parent ...

High Blood Pressure And Smoking!
2008-02-01 00:00:00
Smoking is often touted by those who partake as a way to calm themselves. Of course, from a life insurance standpoint, calm or not, smoking carries so much health baggage with it that rates for smokers are dramatically higher than non smokers. A recent study suggests that the feeling of calmness may be deceiving as women ...
