Broadband tax ‘to be made law’
2009-09-23 15:01:00 A broadband tax, which will see everyone with a fixed telephone line paying 50p extra a month, "will be law before the next election". This is according to the Stephen Timms, the Minister for Digital Britain. Speaking at a debate in London, Mr Timms said the tax will be presented to parliament as part of the Finance Bill. But the Tory MP John Whittingdale said the tax, which could raise up to £175m a year to fund high speed networks, would be opposed by the Conservatives. "I’m confident the Conservative party will oppose it. I object to it on the basis that it is another tax and is aimed at people who are using old technology," said Mr Whittingdale, who is also chair of the DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) select committee. This post was sort of a challenge for more women to submit speaker proposals to conferences. In reviewing the proposals we received for Affiliate Summit East 2009, 21% of the proposals were submitted by women. The percentage of women speakers at ASE09 was a little higher than the percent of proposals by women. The way speakers are chosen for Affiliate Summit is that the proposals are voted on by the Affiliate Summit Advisory Board. The proposals that get the most positive votes are selected for the conference. Intel shows chips can get thinner

One of the world’s largest makers of processors has produced what is thought to be the first working version of a 22 nanometer SRAM chip. Some industry experts were surprised, saying they did not think chips could get any thinner. The chip contains nearly three billion transistors packed into an area the size of a fingernail but Intel says there could be smaller to come. The development shows there is still life in Moore’s Law, which states the number of transistors on a silicon chip will double every two years. Generally speaking the smaller the chip’s geometry, the faster and more power efficient the chip. French gamers call for a retro game museum

The group, called MO5, say the new museum should be interactive, allowing users to play the old game systems. The proposed "National Institute of Digital Sciences" would have an original working version Pong, one of the earliest games released in 1972. However, the group acknowledged it would take time to actually happen. A spokesman for the group, Philippe Dubois, told BBC News that video games are there to be played, not just looked at. "We have a collection of more than 30,000 parts and 1500 different game machines – ranging from arcades to home consoles – which continues to grow. MaruBot Football League better than soccer video game
2009-09-23 13:01:00 Just when I am still reeling after Space Foosball, another electronic tabletop game that requires the player to stand comes my way. Introducing MaruBot Football League , a new way of playing soccer on the table. As you can see, miniature robots rest safely under glass, and it is up to the four players (two on one team, two on the other) to control them. These players are moved by joystick controls, and their goal is to make goals. Oddly enough, these robots have LEDs in their eyes that indicate emotions. So if the other team scores a goal, they look flat and sad. If you make a goal, the eyes look wide and happy. Check out a mini photo gallery after the jump to see for yourself.
