Amazon Targets Apple iTunes

On Monday, Amazon released it's public beta of their new MP3 service. Unlike Apple iTunes, all music is DRM-free, meaning the music can be played on any MP3-capable device. Big plus!! Because of this, there are a few major labels that have opted-out of joining with the Amazon service. Nevertheless, Amazon is boasting over 180,000 artists, including indie labels.Another great feature is all the MP3's are encoded at 256kbps, the same bit rate that iTunes offers with it's iTunes Plus Premium service (songs are $1.29 each). You won't be paying for the higher quality with Amazon. Songs will be $.89 to $.99. It's pretty obvious that they have iTunes in their sights.I've been looking through the Amazon catalog of music this morning and happy to report that they have some great music to offer. I found a terrific new add-on for Firefox the other day. It's called Google Browse r Sync . This little beauty keeps your bookmarks, history, persistent cookies, and saved passwords all in continuous sync across all your browsers.Say you bookmark a site on in your browser at work. Once you get home, that bookmark is there! No need to find it again. Every important thing you do in one browser is reflected in all the others. This is one of those gems that I come across every so often. Author of six other novels, Chuck Rosenthal, has recently released his latest literary work, "The Heart of Mars." The plot of this fantasy/sci-fi novel is pretty interesting. Global warming has caused the habitation of Mars in the year 2450 by a race known as the Nution. A freighter that is carrying a load from the farms of Europa is hijacked and is last seen heading toward Mars. Detective, Marl, who is both human and Nution, is sent to investigate this issue. He discovers the utopian dream of the Nution is not as it seems, and that the solar system is on the verge of revolution.This novel, part detective story, part action adventure, had me thinking and intrigued as I sat and read it through, cover to cover. I think that you'll enjoy it as well. It's a nice break from the tensions of reality and business. I was first introduced to slot machines in Reno. My father-in-law owned a motel there and there was a casino attached to it. My mother-in-law took me for an all-night gambling binge one of the nights my wife and I were there.
