I'm Moving to Wordpress!
2007-08-28 04:31:00 I have decided to migrate the Musings blog to the Wordpress platform going forward. I have also set up a domain for the blog to accomodate my marketing efforts. The new Musings of the CopyGhost blog will be housed at www.copyghostblog.com, and daily posts will begin again within the next few days. The new www.copyghost.com website should be completed soon, and both will offer complementary links as originally planned. However, for all three of my loyal blog readers, you may notice an altering of the tone of the Musings posts. This is intentional, and I hope, an improvement over the slightly silly and way-too-laid-back style you've come to expect.Going forward, it's strictly business. (Although, I gotta be me!)Hopefully, you'll stick with me as I keep trudging along in the wild world of freelance writing, even if I get a touch stuffier! :-)See you at www.copyghostblog.com real soon!Justin Lambert CopyGhost Copywriting and Ghostwriting for businesses of all size, nationwide. Now For Something Completely Different!
2007-08-03 23:30:00 In reading through some of my posts over the last few weeks, I've noticed that in my struggle to become more regular and consistent with my posts, I have also become far more self-possessed. That's not a terrible thing, considering the purpose of the blog, but there's some sense of selfishness to it too, so I wanted to change things up a bit for this post. Not that I'm not involved in this one, that would be silly. :-)So, today's post is here to celebrate the completion of my first novel! In collaboration with a good friend of mine (who will remain anonymous until he let's me know he's okay with me giving his name, because I know he's reading this blog. . . ), I have completed writing a 76,000-word science fiction novel named "The Return." The story follows the heroic and tragic story of a group of marooned astronauts struggling for survival on a lunar habitat. I feel like the story is really exciting and holds interest, while being grounded well enough in reality to read li... More About: Complete , Some , Diff
The CopyGhost's Weaknesses **Part Two**
2007-08-01 06:04:00 Over-reaching, under-achieving.From a business standpoint, I have always had a bad habit of over-reaching too early on, biting off more than I'm even interested in chewing, then inevitably letting someone down along the way.I always had the best of intentions when my previous ventures have panned out this way, but that doesn't change the fact that my lack of necessary foresight led to customers being disappointed, and my reputation suffering. So what's different this time? What's going to keep this from happening?Well, to begin with, a lot of the plans and strategies discussed in the last four or five blog posts really point toward a very slow and steady process rather than an initial explosion followed by a slow fizzle. My marketing is going to start very slow, but (here's that word again,) consistently, and it's going to be focused on the goals of gaining credibility and that first job. Previously, I tended to shoot for as much work as quickly as possible, so as to offset t... More About: Part

2007-07-28 06:12:00 Procrastination.Need I say more? If you've read this blog for any length of time, you've seen it. It has stolen more productive time from me than any other single influence, and spells potential doom for CopyGhost.Yes, I am a natural procrastinator. It's ironic, really. I get a huge boost out of being organized, writing up my daily To Do List, carrying a planner around with me and making sure to use it every single day.And yet, when it comes time to do something that is important, but is not yet urgent, something stops me.I still have a hard time figuring it out. Now, this problem doesn't plague me unless there is no set deadline or there are no set parameters on a project. Given those circumstances, it feels fine to put something off rather than working on it diligently. That's why CopyGhost is where it is now, rather than beating off the customers with a stick.I know for a fact, if a client asked me to do X, Y and Z before a particular date, even if it was a tremendous rush, I ... The CopyGhost's Strengths **Part Three**
2007-07-27 07:00:00 Yes, it's been a week. Leave me alone. I was busy. And that's how it always starts isn't it? I'm not going to take it easy on myself here. Not posting for six days is completely unacceptable at this point. Completely. So, let's move on with The CopyGhost's Strengths , Part Three. We've already discussed my writing and marketing abilities, both of which are vital for the success of a freelance copywriting and ghostwriting firm. My third (and final) major strength is my intense entrepreneurial drive and desire.I have wanted to own and operate my own business for as long as I can remember. The desire to have even a limited control over my own destiny is compelling, and the opportunity to actually earn what I'm worth boggles my mind. However, I have not always had the drive I have now. Let me explain the difference:As I said, I've always wanted to do this, but I never really have. Once I spent a summer mowing lawns and whacking weeds, and called myself a "landscaper". Once I ...
The CopyGhost's Strengths **Part Two**
2007-07-22 03:28:00 Yesterday I discussed my writing ability. The second of four major strengths I bring to this business is my marketing ability. What I mean by that is my ability to look at a product or service from the customer's standpoint and pull out the vital benefits that must be understood to make the sale. From the ghostwriting standpoint, this same marketing mentality helps me focus on the facets of the client's personality that will most effectively "sell" whatever subject or point of view I've been asked to write about. It helps a speech reach the audience's heart. It helps an article boost the "author's" reputation while informing the reader. And, it helps me speak to my clients on a level they all understand: monetary. In other words, my ability to see the marketing value of what I write gives me a leg up on a good portion of the writers they may have dealt with in the past, (even copywriters) because I can translate ideas into dollars when discussing their problems. I can help th... More About: Strengths , Part
The CopyGhost's Strengths **Part One**
2007-07-21 03:10:00 A little study into my personal strengths, and by extension, the strengths of CopyGhost as a company. (Don't worry, the weaknesses will be detailed in an upcoming post!)To begin with, we'll take a look at my writing ability. It forms the entire base of my desire to be a freelance writer, and I must be relatively confident in it, or I wouldn't be putting myself through all of this, would I? :)But, it's important to understand some of my views of my own abilities. From as far back as Elementary School, I have been pleasently surprised by peoples' reaction to my writing. I have often found people are far more impressed with what I write than I am. (Not that I am over-confident at this point, or willing to hand in a first draft. I've never really come to terms with this aspect of my writing history, I'm just reporting it as a fact.)This has boosted my confidence over the years to the point that I have undertaken a number of diverse writing projects: magazine articles, poems,... Where Does the CopyGhost Stand On. . . Marketing? **Part Four**
2007-07-20 03:15:00 Now here's where things get really interesting.Starting out on a shoestring as I am, I will be investing very little to begin with on mailing lists. Therefore, my direct mail campaign (discussed in Part Three of this series) will be primarily sent to prospects I have identified one of three ways:1) The local Business Weekly, whenever a company is highlighted as introducing a product line or pushing a particular service in upcoming months.2) The annual Book of Lists, highlighting various high-level local organizations in many different categories, along with contact names and numbers for this purpose.3) Individuals I have met personally through my face-to-face sales efforts.Let me explain a little more about number three.Upon completion of my redesigned website, I will be developing a "prospecting folder" that will consist of the following elements:An introductory sales letter that "reminds" the prospect of the brief conversation we had previously.Nicely printed copies of my Specia... 2007-07-18 04:01:00 As a freelance copywriter and ghostwriter by trade, I am probably a bit biased toward direct response advertising, or direct mail. It represents one of the most lucrative fields I can potentially get in to, and it happens to be a favorite of mine as well. So, it's only natural that I should choose to market CopyGhost using direct mail as a major part of the plan. But, it goes beyond that as well. Direct mail works. There's no getting around it. It's measurable, it's (relatively) cheap, it's as targeted as I want it to be, and it's easy to follow up on in the volumes I'm taking on.I have already experimented with a few different sales letters, both in print and (if you agree with me that it also qualifies as a form of DM) in e-mail. I had mixed response, but of my own admission, I did not spend enough time on narrowing my list. When www.copyghost.com is redone and ready to go, I plan on phasing in three major print DM projects:One is a standard 1-3 page sales letter introdu... Where Does the CopyGhost Stand On. . . Marketing? **Part Two**
2007-07-17 05:34:00 When it comes to passive marketing, the world's giant corporations definitely take the cake. Consider, for instance the billions of dollars spent on television commercials that really do nothing but entertain. Budweiser has been spending this money for decades during football games and NASCAR races, and all it's really accomplished is to get their name in the front of peoples' minds so that when the average joe eyes the huge assortment of beers available in the cooler aisle of the local supermarket, that big red and gold label jumps out at them, and they reach for an ice cold Bud.For the gigantic corporations, this kind of brand development works, because they have the time and money to let it work over the long haul. CopyGhost will die a slow and painful death relying on strictly passive advertising schemes to make people aware of what I do and how I do it. But, don't get me wrong. Passive marketing and advertising definitely have their place in my marketing plan, but to a li... More About: Marketing , Part , Where , Stand

2007-07-14 06:58:00 Ahhh, marketing! It's my bread and butter! As a copywriter, marketing and advertising are what float my boat. But, interestingly, the marketing of my own business remains a challenge for a number of reasons. First, as discussed yesterday, finances are a major hinderance. I simply can't afford to market CopyGhost full-scale the way I would like to. And, in all honesty, if I had the money, I'd probably throw a lot of it away on large-scale campaigns that wouldn't work. That's just the way I am when I have money burning a hole in my pocket. So, instead, I need to actively market very, very selectively and to a highly targeted audience. This works to my advantage, as it is inexpensive and focused. But, being that advertising and marketing are to a large extent a numbers game, it also works to my disadvantage because my most targeted market is still far too large for me to be able to afford. So what is a struggling freelance copywriter to do?Well, fortunately, I have a plan. Where Does the CopyGhost Stand On. . . Finances?
2007-07-13 03:08:00 First, an apology. This is exactly how it always starts: my day job became extremely busy, a thousand things happened at once, and marketing my business (my one true secular desire) is the first thing to hit the back burner. It's sad really. Fortunately, only three days slipped by without a post. So, let's continue.Finan ces are by far my biggest challenge as a freelance writer. I have all the confidence in the world that if I were given the opportunity to concentrate on Copy Ghost full time, I could make it successful. No doubt. The problem is, it would be unrealistic to expect the business would be completely self-sufficient in any less than six months. More likely a year. So the only safe way to jump into it (with a family of four and debts up the proverbial wazoo,) is to save a cushion of at least $24,000 to cover six months of living expenses. And that would just cover my current lifestyle, (which ain't much) and a minimal allowance for marketing and operating expenses.So,... More About: Where , Stand

2007-07-10 04:01:00 So we have discussed my flagship, http://www.copyghost.com/, as well as this blog, The Musings of the Copy Ghost. Now, the final 'web presence' post will cover all of the peripheral online moves I've made, and those I plan to make in the near future to coincide with the release of the new and improved copyghost.com!First, as I mentioned yesterday, I have entered this blog into a number of blog catalogs and indexing sites throughout the web. I chose Blogger.com for my blog home partly because I knew I would show up prominently on Google right off the bat. And, if you go to Google.com and search the word "copyghost", you see that I dominate the rankings! This, despite the fact that some software, and some foreign language blogger from Yahoo have both used the term at some point in history!(Now, if only I could subliminally get local business moguls to begin thinking about the word "copyghost", and what it may mean, so that they feel the desire to Google it. 2007-07-09 04:33:00 So yesterday I discussed http://www.copyghost.com/ and the new copy and design that will be hitting the web (hopefully) in August. Today, I'd like to discuss some of the peripheral web presence projects I have been working on or planning to coincide with the release of Copy Ghost 2.0!First, there is this blog! Musings of the CopyGhost has been online for almost five months. This is post number #31. That means that I have posted on approximately 20% of the days I could have. That was then. This is now. As noted a few days ago, I have renewed my committment to daily posts, and plan to continue this for the long haul. I would be delighted to find that this blog begins attracting and interesting readers around the world. But, to be honest, that is not my main reason for deciding to post daily for the foreseeable future. My main reason is that this is my workout. From a writing standpoint, just the barebones placing of words on paper (or a computer screen,) the daily activities of a freela... More About: Presence , Part , Where , Stand
Where Does the CopyGhost Stand On. . . Web Presence? **Part One**
2007-07-08 01:24:00 As noted in yesterday's post, I have spent a considerable amount of time developing a web presence for Copy Ghost. Not nearly enough, mind you, but a significant amount. Here are my past, current and future web presence projects:First, my online flagship, www.copyghost.com. Previous posts have dealt with how I feel about this site. As you view it right now, it's not much to speak of. The design is what I wanted. My brother did an awesome job with what I gave him, but it's nothing to make you say, "Gee whiz, that's a cool site." So, for that reason, it's no good. The copy is the real issue. The site is designed and written in such a way that it basically tells visitors (when and if it gets any ;-)) "Hi, I couldn't afford to print a brochure, so I stuck my brochure online. Hope you like it. But if you don't, tough cookies."That's not much of a web presence. Now, I spent a lot of time waiting for my website to come online, but honestly I probably spent a grand total of ... Where Does the CopyGhost Stand On. . . Local Networking?
2007-07-07 06:44:00 This, I must admit, is one of my biggest downfalls to date.Although freelance writing can easily be a national, if not global, business thanks to the Internet, the bulk of the average freelancer's clients come from a local geographic region. This no doubt dates back to the old days when a freelance writer needed to meet face-to-face with each prospect and client at least once, possibly several times, then snail-mail and/or FedEx the finished product upon completion. These days, it's possible to conduct my entire business without ever even seeing my clients' faces, if I so chose. (And in some cases, that would have been wise. . . )But, the fact is most clients, especially those who are willing to invest a significant amount of money in a freelance writer, want the opportunity to meet the man, the myth, the legend in person. For that reason, local networking can be a vital part of my business. So why am I so remiss in this area?Easy. I'm scared. The online marketplace is so simple,... Where Does the CopyGhost Stand On. . . Experience?
2007-07-06 04:09:00 Are you experienced? That's an interesting double-edged sword in my line of work. As I mentioned in yesterday's post, my lack of experience is probably a huge factor in the difficult time I'm having establishing a valid client base to begin with. At the rate I'm going, I ought to be able to quit my day job around the time I start taking advantage of the senior discount at Old Country Buffet. But, at the same time, my lack of experience serves as a protection too, to some extent. As I am right now, I am constantly learning about all different types of writing assignments, experimenting, keeping my horizons wide open. I am willing to consider marketing to tremendously diverse segments of my potential audience because I don't have a specialty nailed down yet.In other words, I'm not constantly churning out the same old hash that sold so well last week. This means each assignment I do manage to pick up is attacked with vigor and enthusiasm, and I am able to bring a fresh view to t... More About: Experience , Copy , Where , Stand , Peri
Where Does the CopyGhost Stand On. . . Writing Education?
2007-07-05 04:32:00 I am not formally educated in writing beyond my High School English classes. I always enjoyed creative writing in school, and always had some story brewing in my mind. I have tried my hand at poetry and lyric writing over the years, with mixed results. I have also done a lot of volunteer work that involves public speaking both to large groups and to individuals. So, in all these ways, I have been taught (or taught myself) to string words together in an interesting way to get across the meaning I intended. And I've enjoyed it immensely. But it doesn't pay the bills (yet.) So, my writing has always played a very distant second place to my "day job", and has always been kept under wraps to a large extent.Last year, I invested money I didn't have into Michael Masterson's Accelerated Program For Six-Figure Copy writing. Having read thousands of pages of How To information regarding copywriting, I assumed I would be dissappointed by the course and would find it a breeze. I was wron... Consistency and Procrastination
2007-07-04 14:34:00 Anyone who has had the slightest interest in this blog has likely noticed two very important elements:Cons istency and Procrastination Frankly, there is none of the first, and way too much of the second. It's been over a month since my last post, and the one before that promised more regular posting after an unexpected hiatus. Wow. So, I am going to flog myself for a few moments in full view of the one or two readers who have decided to keep checking in case I haven't killed myself or fallen victim to the most intense writer's block ever diagnosed. First, let's consider the concept of consistency as it relates to writing (blogs, sales letters, novels -- the concept is exactly the same regardless.) Consistency requires a "B-I-S" mentality. Butt-In-Seat. That's really all it is. You have a goal (to write XYZ). You have a timeframe (otherwise it's not a goal, it's a wish). And now, you just have to put your B-I-S and get it done. The problem here is I've been practicing ...
And the CopyGhost Returns...
2007-05-21 07:04:00 Yes, I've been away for a bit too long. The worst part is, I actually haven't been away. But, there is success to speak of, so let's dispense with the whining. In the last few weeks, my eBay ads have brought in several paying clients. Several of them have discussed projects that will expand far beyond the three hours they have purchased from me, and I have been able to quote extremely fair prices beyond what they paid for the auctions.I consider this to be a very simple win-win situation at this point. They purchased my services on eBay because they were looking for a deal. I was selling cheap because I wanted new clients and leads, and especially to help beef up my portfolio with new and different assignments. When they have asked me for something beyond what I can do in the three hours agreed to on the auction, I'm not going to send them away shaking their heads by quoting my "normal fees," because then we both lose. Instead, I have been quoting a fee that rounds out to a... More About: Return , Copy , Turn
What a Week!
2007-05-05 03:23:00 It's been a hellishly busy week at my other job (ugh!) which unfortunately interferes significantly with my prefered vocation. But, such is the life of the moonlighter. I got one response from our local rag here in Ravena, NY when I sent out my press release, which was nice. I still need to locate a copy so I can extract my very first clipping! I'll scan it and post it here just because I'm a narcissistic nut. The paper actually began distribution yesterday, so I'm interested to see how effective the bold offer was, and how it translates in the overall editorial atmosphere of the paper.I'm also curious if any of the other papers I sent it out to printed it without notifying me. . . One can always hope. But, as another positive note, I sent out several cold-call e-mails to local marketing business owners, requesting an opportunity to assist with a project on spec to gain experience and portfolio seed. One interested party actually responded to my e-mail within two hours! I... More About: Week
CopyGhost.com is Officially Online!
2007-04-29 05:59:00 Drum roll please!WWW.COPYGHOST.COM HAS OFFICIALLY ARRIVED!!!!!Well, in all honesty, it's still not perfect. Nothing to do with design, more the copy I'm not totally happy with, but I think one of the greatest aspects of building and maintaining a website is the dynamic nature of the content. I can change it several times a day with ease.Of course, the site is extremely simple right now, which is how I wanted it. I don't intend to complicate the design at all, but do expect the site to evolve and grow as Copy Ghost does. I will eventually be adding a Connexion archive, although I would rather wait until I have a fair number of subscribers before giving away all my secrets! :-)I will also begin posting my other published articles as they are written so that the search engines can see this is a site worth viewing repeatedly. A Few Minor Bugs to Work Out. . .
2007-04-27 20:21:00 As noted previously, the website design is done. The site is technically up and running right now at www.copyghost.com, but it is not 100% complete, so I haven't told the world yet. You'll probably notice the Connexion Newsletter page is still blank. I am still nailing down a few details about how the sign-up is going to work. More than likely I will just end up handling the initial sign-ups manually, sending out each message routinely to each person. By the time this gets out of hand, I should have a more automated system picked out and ready to roll. When the site does eventually hit the big time, I will be announcing this via press releases, both online and to my local papers here in town: The Times Union, The Daily Gazette, plus a few smaller local rags. Need to Share a Tasty Tidbit from My Hero, Clayton Makepeace!
2007-04-22 03:22:00 For those of you who are not involved at all in the direct response marketing fields, especially direct mail, you may have never heard of Clayton Make peace. He is a rediculously wealthy freelance direct mail copywriter, to the tune of over $3 million annually in royalties alone.Gadzooks.But, the coolest thing about this guy is two-fold:First, he's an inspiration to all of us lowly struggling copywriters who would sell our left lung for a chance to make a tenth of what he makes doing something we love to do. His story is enough to bring tears to our eyes and make us fall down on our knees and thank the good Lord above that there are people in this world willing and able to pay that kind of money for good copy! But secondly, he's not shy about helping us and teaching us to do the same! Now, like any expert business person, especially one who specializes in marketing, Clayton has some very high-priced (and no-doubt high-quality) programs for sale. I wouldn't know how good they ar... Considerations on Branding
2007-04-18 07:28:00 I have already discussed previously my thoughts about the CopyGhost brand. For instance, the fact that I had briefly considered using the "ghost" aspect of the name to conjure up halloweenish images, etc. But, I thought better of it immediately because I do feel my chosen vocation deserves respect.Instead, I have focused on the bi-lateral services I am offering as the CopyGhost: copywriting and ghostwriting. This combination, in and of itself, is not the CopyGhost brand, but it's a start. So my next logical question is, what makes CopyGhost different from any other copywriter/ghostwriter operating nationwide? What makes me unique? Why should my potential clients choose CopyGhost over Joe Shmoe? I could focus on the service. For instance, I offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee that many writers do not: unlimited rewrites, free of charge, until you're satisfied. Now, this guarantee may come back to bite me as my client list grows, but for now, it makes me a little different.Bu... More About: Branding , Brand , Side , Cons , Consider
Website Design is Done and Another Article
2007-04-12 03:59:00 My brother has completed the initial designs for the website! The site is simple and straight forward, with all the focus on the content. I'm not really thrilled with the content thus far, because I honestly didn't spend the time on it I should have. But, the best thing about working online as opposed to, say, my company brochure, is how easy it is to change and improve! So, I'm currently concentrating more on creating and sending out articles, and plan to improve the website copy within the next few weeks. There are a few more quirks to be worked out before we upload and launch the site, including a hosting upgrade. So, I'm going to build up to it a bit by preparing some press releases to introduce www.copyghost.com to the world! My Apologies, and a New Series
2007-04-08 19:29:00 I am not one to make excuses, so all I will say about my week-long absence is "I'm sorry." I have decided to begin including some excerpts (or entire copies) of articles I have written on various business communications-related subjects as supplements to the "Musings of the CopyGhost" my readers have come to expect from this blog. I am especially interested in your opinions of my opinions (if that makes any sense), as these article concepts will eventually be compiled in book form, as I discussed in an earlier blog. So, to begin this informational series, I am including an article I wrote for my Connexion e-newsletter, entitled "What Makes a Good Writer Great?" Enjoy! You have experienced it on numerous occasions. 2007-04-02 04:22:00 I am so enthralled with the Mind Mapping concept, I can't even begin to describe it all to you. I touched on it briefly in a previous post, and about my plans to give it a shot in my work and see how it helped me.All I can say is WOW! Here is a brief example of how Mind Mapping has helped me:What you're looking at is a simple MindMap I have developed to help me brainstorm ideas for articles to be included in my Connexion newsletter. As you can see, I've broken down the basic concept of business communications into writing and speaking, plus two other topics: the Introduction and Miscellaneous. Each one of the outside "nodes" or arms is the title of a prospective article in that section. As I prepare to write each article, I will create a fresh MindMap for it and link the two in my FreeMind software. I get goosebumps just thinking about it! Quick Update on the Website!
More articles from this author:2007-03-27 19:28:00 Just a quick update today regarding the new CopyGhost website, www.copyghost.com. My brother has gotten back to me with a design update. I like it alot. Take a look, and see what you think:As you can see, the design is very plain and dignified, not flashy or out-of-control. Each link on the left will bring you to an identically-designed page with different content, and the blurb on the bottom left is an invitation to join the Connexion Newsletter, which will appear on every page. There are still some improvements to make, (like moving the Connexion invitation up "above the fold" so it can be seen without scrolling, for instance,) but I'm happy with the overall design, and I'm looking forward to uploading it pretty soon.
