2007-11-23 02:08:00
Part of being a successful entrepreneur is being able to competently wear many hats—the finance hat, the operations hat, the marketing hat, the sales hat, and on down the business line. This article discusses the marketing hat; in particular, email marketing. Have you ever heard of safelists? Have you ever heard of The Mad Vlad? A new marketing strategy that has arisen in the online world is email marketing through safelists. A safelist can be defined as a group of people who voluntarily agree to receive each other’s promotional emails; they have all joined the a particular safelist. The safelist members email each other various promotions with the intent of generating business from their fellow members who may buy what they’re promoting, which they do. NewsTarget Articles, Payouts & Links
2007-11-21 16:39:00
The website NewsTarget, which is fairly strong in the SERPs and carries a good amount of link trust and weight has opened up to contributions from anyone who’d like to join. Better yet, they allow you to use your own AdSense account to power the articles you contribute and to link out in reference resources, much like Wikipedia (though you’re your own editor). It’s certainly a good place for some article-placement strategies.

301′ing Doesn’t Always Keep Sitelinks
2007-11-21 16:39:00
Sadly, I’ve recently got word and some evidence that 301′ing a domain that previously had sitelinks with Google (the broken out list of important pages on the domain when a brand keyword search is performed) doesn’t always keep the sitelinks in tow. This seems particularly true if the domain being moved previously had some or all of the keywords in the domain name. Of course, you can always earn these back, but it’s a good rule of thumb to keep in mind when thinking about a potential site move.

Don’t Overlook Content on Linking Pages
2007-11-21 16:38:00
If you’ve logged into Google’s Webmaster Tools panel recently, you’ve seen the tab giving you data on the words and phrases Google most often finds in links to your site and on your pages. There’s also one more cool dataset they show - terms found on pages linking to you… While that’s great data to have, it’s also a really important message to webmasters that Google knows and judges the topic and keyword usage of the pages providing your links. Since pattern identification is Google’s strong suit, you can bet that they’re trying to track down the content that appears on pages across the web to figure out where your site truly is relevant. The lesson here - be careful where you place off-topic and paid links. Those content patterns are almost certainly being used to find patterns of irrelevance. Don’t worry about natural, organic links you didn’t place - the patterns will appear natural, just as the engines expect the...

A Reciprocal Linking Tactic that Works
2007-11-21 16:38:00
Trading links from long lists of link pages on domains is an old strategy that the search engines are doing a generally good job of discounting these days. However, reciprocal linking systems and emails can still work, you just have to be more creative. One terrific way is to use reciprocal “content” links - here’s how it works: Email sites or people you want to trade links with and offer to link to a piece of content on their website - an article, a graph, a tool, a blog post - that you particularly liked. In exchange, ask them not to just give you any old link, but to find something they like on your site and point to that from somewhere - anywhere - on their site. You get a link profile that looks as natural and organic as can be, and you’re getting a lot of the same value, with less risk of discovery and devaluation by the engines.

Know the Searchers
2007-11-21 16:37:00
Compete.com ran this blog post today showing an almost reverse long tail pattern for people who search on the web. Very interesting to see, and definitely a good explanation for why Google has lower conversion rates on average than Yahoo! and MSN/Live. Compete’s blog is actually a pretty good data source, and though I wouldn’t put 100% confidence in their material, it’s certainly valuable for presentations, discussions, blog posts, etc.
Broken Out Results and More Search Traffic
2007-11-21 16:37:00
If you’re ranking in the top 3-4 positions at Google for a particular heavy competition term/phrase, it can be a great asset to get that second page broken out underneath your results. In order to accomplish this, you’ll want to first find the page from your domain that Google thinks is “second” in value (just run through their SERPs until you see it or use the show 100 results per page). Then, get some links pointing from your other pages on the topic to both pages, and see if you can tweak your external link campaign to point some additional juice to that page. The great part is - you only need to push that second page up to result 10 to get the “broken-out” feature.

TNX - Sell Text Links
2007-11-08 08:45:00
TNX has been around for a little while now, but they never caught on due to a lack of blogs that were in English. Since opening the doors to English speaking bloggers, they have also widened their opportunity for success when competing against other sites that sell text links. In the Google pimp-slap era, can another Text Link broker succeed? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.The Good TNX has the lowest fees in the industry. Unlike other text link brokers, TNX only charges a 12% fee. Others sometimes charge as high as 50%+. An innovative system using points instead of dollars might work to their favor. However, you can always sell the points for cash. The points can also be used as money to pay for advertisements on other blogs… it’s a pretty neat system. The Bad I’m not certain that the market has room for another text link broker. There are a few major players in this category and TNX may haver entered the scent a bit late. Remember… Google is now penalizing sites fo...

Searching Google News’ Archives Requires a Little Extra Effort
2007-10-31 11:41:00
Google’s News Archives can be a great way to see what your clients, sites or competitors have been up to in the past, but the standard search doesn’t provide all the results you’d expect or hope for. Note how a search for SEOmoz returns 44 results Clicking on timeline, we can see the stories sorted by year Choosing a specific year (like 2006) will give us results by month (remember that the most recent 6 months or so aren’t in the archives, they’re in the standard news search results) From there, we can drill down to a specific month (here’s April 2006) to get the most exact, complete data It’s a bit frustrating that the full numbers of results aren’t visible simply by going to the “next page” as with most of Google’s search results, but at least now you know how to reach all the data.

Link Spam Detection Presentation from Yahoo!
2007-10-31 11:41:00
A presentation given last year in Barcelona by Yahoo ! anti-spam researchers is available online at SlideShare. It’s definitely worth reading to see how IR pros can detect link farms and link manipulation using advanced methods of analysis. The most revealing part to me was the various charts showing which types of pages and links are most frequently found to contain high levels of spam (slides 20-24). The presentation is here - Link -Based Spam Detection .

Sponsored Post: Blogging to the Bank 2.0
2007-10-31 11:41:00
I’ve been into professional blogging for the past two and a half years, and I’ve been through most “stages” of problogging, including being a corporate blogger, a network blogger and an independent problogger trying to earn my own income online through advertising and affiliate programmes. I know I haven’t exactly been earning riches from my blogging, but I do get a decent living–at least to my standards. However, I’ve been regularly reading blogs by the “Gurus” in problogging (you probably know who they are), and of course the very useful tips here on Performancing, and I thought I could probably earn more if I’m able to better optimize my blogging. Maybe if I followed certain formulas in my blogging work and business I can earn better. Checking out bloggingtothebank.com, the site at first came to me as one of those standard get-rich quick schemes carried out via affiliate marketing. The home page starts with a promise tha...

Getting Your PageRank Back if You’ve Been Manually Penalized

Joost De Valk did it - and so can you. If your site’s been hit, it appears that Google is looking for some communication, the removal of any paid links and a reinclusion request, either manually over email (though that’s probably NOT the preferred method) or through the Webmaster Central tools console.

Romandock.Com - sponsored review
2007-10-29 07:45:00
Meet Nick. Nick is the man behind the blog romandock.com. I was quite intrigued by the name, and learned from the “about me” section that it was named after his dogs. One is Rocky, the other Mandy. He threw the two names together, added an extra “O” and romandock.com was created. -Can Ham Radio, Computers, Money, and Rambling Co-exist?- The first time I visited the site my first concern was that Nick tried to cover too many topics with one blog. My opinion is that there are just far too many subject areas to co-exist in one place. I believe that he needs to focus on one, maybe two of these areas and go with it. If he’d like to keep the other topics live, he should start another blog to keep all of these topics separate. The site itself needs a little bit of work (I’ll explain in a minute). But other than the content not being very focused, Nick does a great job of keeping readers interested. The content is the strong point of this site, and Nick needs to be commended ...

Ever been stuck for ideas or inspiration for an AdWords creative? Ever wanted to see what copy your international compatriots have written? Simply add the “gl” operator to the end of your query string with the country code of the nation you would like to see. For example: http://www.google.com/search?q=ipod+touch &gl=uk http://www.google.com/search?q=ipod+touch &gl=us http://www.google.com/search?q=ipod+touch &gl=au http://www.google.com/search?q=ipod+touch &gl=ca (Your mileage may vary for non-English speaking countries)

When I got the description for Younanimous.com I thought hey cool let’s see what this is: Younanimous is a social search engine, adding in the best from all worlds with a very dynamic and very unique way of searching. However when I got there I was a little disappointed to learn it was a meta search engine that aggregates the click behavior of users into it’s algorithm. While I like their premise About aftervote - The social search engine Ever find sites that never have the info you want, but are always at the top of the serps? Yes, we are looking at you Experts-Exchange.com… Well, now you can blacklist pages or entire domains from showing up in your listings, No more crap! And say goodbye to spam. With a “Spam!” Tag, you can help eliminate bogus results from the serps one spam site at a time. Keyword Suggestions from Live & Yahoo!

The new versions of both Live .com and Yahoo ! search have a lot of great keyword “suggestion” information. For Yahoo! , note the pulldown blue bar that displays related terms and in Live, watch the top, right-hand corner for “related searches.” For example, here’s what Live had to recommend about the search term “xbox 360″: Xbox 360 Games Xbox 360 Cheats Buy Xbox 360 Xbox 360 Sale Xbox 360 Console Xbox 360 Vs PS3 Xbox 360 Bundle Free Xbox 360 And here’s what Yahoo! is suggesting for the search query “web 2.0″ (they actually show many more if you scroll): what is web 2.0 web 2.0 sites web 2.0 applications web 2.0 design web 2.0 conference

Sponsored Review: Apogee Search
2007-10-27 08:26:00
Apogee Search is a Search Engine Marketing firm founded in 2001 by McKinsey & Co. alumni. The main focus area of the firm is affiliate marketing and pay-per-call. The main goal of Apogee is to direct targeted visitors to B2B and B2C websites. Services: So, what services does Apogee provide? In layman’s terms, the goal is to bring people who do a search on a search engine to a website where what they are looking for is potentially sold. The buzzword complete description of that is “qualified leads from ready to buy customers”. For that to happen, from what I understand, you get in touch with a representative who analysis your website for search engine marketing. The search engine marketing analysis service is supposed to be free. If you accept, Apogee positions itself as a partner to you and “help you get the most from your marketing dollar and quickly raise your search marketing revenues to the next level”. I can hear you being confused about my tone about the service ...

2007-10-25 12:30:00
Copywriters know that writing powerful, persuasive copy is tough enough when English is your first language. This is especially true when writing conversationally and that actually can add a second layer of difficulty. Common slang, figures of speech, and subtle shades of meaning are what we weave together to get our prospects and customers nodding, resonating and responding to our messages. Which makes the whole process of translation so dang hard and fraught with peril. When we transport our advertising messages from their native language base to another language - with its own slang and common understandings - well … we can only guess at the magnitude for ourselves and our clients if mistakes are made. And advertising history is littered with precisely these kinds of translation mistakes. Almost all are hilarious - unless, of course, you’re the one responsible for the mega blunder. That’s why I was happy to take a look at JAPANtranslation, a Japanese translation agency to ...

2007-10-25 12:29:00
GetWebContent.com is a copywriting service that connects you with web content writers experienced in producing search engine optimized copy. Unlike other services in this field, GetWebContent sells unique content to each customer - that is, multiple people won’t have the same copy which results in decreased search engine rankings. Due to the full-service characteristics of GetWebContent’s offerings, copy is rather expensive; “small articles, such as blog entries, can cost as little as $89.”My first impression was that this service seems rather shady, as do many of these SEO-centric Internet marketing companies. As it turns out, GetWebContent is owned by Atlanta-based Creative NetVentures - a company that owns many links and gambling-oriented web properties. Enough said. GetWebContent has a few pages on their website detailing why they are worth the cost and even display an example of before and after their SEO work on copy. In my opinion, the before SEO copy was much less sp...

The Quickest Way Insurance Agents Can Increase Sales
2007-08-20 14:00:00
April 2007 The most important thing insurance agents have to realize is that direct mail campaigns, bus bench advertisement, newspaper ads, yellow pages ads, cold calling, and door knocking does not work. It’s a major reason why 30% of new agents who come into this business are broke and out of the business within a year? And, why 55% of the insurance agents are making less than $40,000 per year, after expenses!  But insurance agents still need to market to insurance consumers, because selling insurance to their friends and relatives is not enough. The Quickest Way to Increase Sales If you want to increase your sales quickly, start thinking differently about marketing to insurance consumers. With more and more consumers turning to the Web to shop for insurance, more and more insurance professionals need ways to target these customers.  Online insurance marketing companies like QuotesAuction.com supply insurance agents with pre-qualified insurance leads.  Insurance leads are...

How to Find the Right Paid Links
2007-07-30 23:27:00
When you’re investigating your competition’s backlinks (usually through a Yahoo! link search), it pays to be very aware of labels like “sponsors,” “partners,” “contributors,” and other nice ways of saying “these folks paid me for a link.” When you find sites like that, get the email address of someone there (an admin or support or marketing email) and shoot them the following: Their name, I was checking out your site today and wondering about the “sponsors” list on this page (link XYZ) - is that through a broker or should advertisers pay you direct? All the best, Your Name You can find some very, very valuable and achievable links in this fashion. Over the past few weeks, I’ve identified not only some good link providers, but also a few link brokers with what appear to be excellent quality networks.

Disclosing Affiliate Links Effectively in Blogs
2007-07-30 23:26:00
I have a tip for you. It came to my mind when there was the discussion about the KeyCompete post at SEOMoz. KeyCompete have an affiliate program via Commission Junction, paying 30% commission. You might want to try something like the following. Have your designer create a link CSS “class” for affiliate links. A style that makes them stick out (e.g. a little “A” icon next to it or something like that), maybe also a formatted tooltip that has a disclosure text, e.g.: “This is an affiliate link. SEOMoz receives a commission for referrals generated by this link. The fact that the link is an affiliate link does not change our opinion about the referred to product or service, but you can support the SEOMoz team by using this link, if you consider the purchase of the product or services because of our post. Thank you.” You can also add that disclosure on a special page and only refer to it from the tool tip. This would allow you to make additiona...

You’d Be Amazed at the Interviews You Can Get
2007-07-30 00:57:00
One of the most overutilized tactics in the SEO world to get links and attention is the interview. They’ve gotten so over-used that many people won’t even link to them anymore. However, outside our little tech community, things are very different. I’m always surprised to see a tiny little blog from one of our clients score an interview with a writer of a big, important best-seller. I’ve seen online sites about TV shows get interviews with actors and actresses, much to their fans’ delights. I’ve seen sites about niche industries get quotes and interviews from the bigwigs of their more general industry cousins. It’s remarkable - and you really never know until you ask. My recommendations - seek out those folks who have “fame” in the wider, offline media that relate somehow to your site’s content and go for the gusto. You’ve got nothing to lose but an email, and everything to gain, particularly if your questions are rele...
