APIs Provide Great Fodder for Easy Content Generation
2007-07-30 00:57:00 I barely need to say anything here, because between Stephan Spencer’s blog on Open API’s and the list he points to at ProgrammableWeb, there’s not much else to say. However, it is important to remember that a lot of API content is going to be duplicate unless you can add some additional value or mashup a lot of good quality text stuff that Google hasn’t seen before. The last thing you want is a great API application that’s seen as spam because it looks like how spammers mashup and re-purpose content. Now go read those links! Host Arcadia
2007-07-27 10:46:00 As more and more websites are built by the minute, the web hosting industry is becoming a huge business and this is probably why this hosting company wanted us to review them The Important Part For most sites, it’s just like they are a business. I mean almost everyone builds a website to earn a few extra bucks online. This is why a reliable web hosting service is really important. Are you a newbie? For webmasters, Host Arca dia offers their best quality hosting from a very low price, starting only $3 per year you’ll get 500 MB of space with cPanel and Fantastic (lots of usefull scripts). With the low price, you can only have 10 add on domains which I think is quite reasonable for people who are just starting out. SeoTier.com is hosted on a much bigger plan (with a different hosting company) because we have a few sites with a high traffic and will definitely use a lot of CPU resources. Shared and Reseller Plans With Host Arcadia, you can get shared and reseller plans for a cheap ... More About: Adia
Optimal Keyword Usage
2007-07-27 09:29:00 If you’re in a semi-competitive battle for rankings, you might want to re-think your use of keywords on the page. For the specific term/phrase you’re going after, here’s what I generally recommend: Used at least once in the title tag, possibly twice (or part of a phrase twice) when appropriate and not spammy looking At least once or twice in the meta description tag - not for rankings, but for CTR In the H1 tag of the page at the very top - as the true headline of the piece (this is good for users and search engines) In at least one other headline, possibly in a modified form 1-2X in bold on the page 4-6X in the body text at minimum, but only as it makes sense and flows gracefully in the sentence structure. You really can’t go “overboard” with too many keyword uses as long as the writing doesn’t start to sound like you’re stuffing the keywords. It’s a tough call, but as with many subjective things, you’ll know it when you ... More About: Keyword , Usage , Opti
Using the Juicy Links Tool to Great Effect
2007-07-27 09:28:00 The new Juicy Links Tool for premium members is a paradise for link builders, so long as you know how to search. My recommendation - use terms like: directory add url submit site resource links recommended sites add profile in conjunction with your primary keyword phrases and you can really put together a fantastic list of potential targets for link acquisition. We tried these searches a couple times and were blown away with the value we could get from it. More About: Great , Effect
Do the Google Shuffle
2007-05-15 00:40:00 I've warned small business owners before about relying too heavily on any one source of traffic to keep their business afloat citing the fact that all it takes is one bad algorithm shift to destroy a Googl e -dependant site. While Google shuffles still happen every now and then, you generally don't hear about them because they're resolved fairly quickly. Nonetheless, Eric Ward addresses the issue over at Search Engine Land this week. Eric writes: Seeing your site's ranking suddenly change is a reality we all face. Sometimes the changes are legitimate, reflecting a shift in the algorithm, or in the inbound link profile of your site or your competitor's sites. But sometimes the changes are a temporary blip, caused by any number of factors, and after a few days or weeks your ranking returns to wherever it was before the shuffle, and you breathe again. Like a game of musical chairs and your site keeps winning. I would imagine that one of the hardest things about being a small busin... More About: Shuffle , The Go , The G

Search Engine Friendly is NOT Search Engine Optimized
2007-05-14 17:50:00 When we are quoting development work for prospective clients we are often asked to develop a website that is search engine optimized. This usually brings me into a long-winded explanation on how developing a website to be search engine friendly is not the same thing as optimizing that website for search performance. Kind of like how building a car is not the same as making it ready to compete in the Indy 500. A Great Source of Fresh Content Ideas for Your Website or Blog
2007-05-13 19:11:00 It is true — fresh, timely and informative content is a great way to entice visitors to come back and visit your website time and time again. For me, at least, the hardest part of writing is often simply coming up with the idea. Are you having trouble coming up with ideas for articles to include on your website or blog, too? I've found a great resource that stimulates my brain every day with loads of ideas — and it's free! It's a service from Google called Google Alerts (http://www.google.com/alerts). It's easy — really! Just make a list of a the primary search phrases that relate to your business. These could be product categories, the names of specific products or services, words or phrases describing common problems your product or service solves, whatever is applicable to your business. If you have a few primary competitors, you list their company names, too. Then log in to Google Alerts using your Google Account and set up your alerts using the list of sea... Where to Filter those Friend Diggs
2007-05-13 10:32:00 Digg's got you down 'cause they banned all your accounts again? Well never fear, because a better method is here (oh man, that sounds cheesy). Here 's the strategy you want to use when emailing friends and asking for a helpful Digg bump. First off, don't send them the Digg URL in an email. The Digg crowd is very savvy and a dead giveaway of manipulation is a bunch of people digging a story when their first visit during a session came to a particular story page. Instead, use this strategy - email your friends with a link to the story and have the Digg link embedded at the top of the page. Ask that they click that link, then Digg the story from there. It's much more natural to have a bunch of visits coming from the piece, back to the Digg story, bumping up the votes than anything else. As always, watch out for patterns - don't have everyone Digg it all at once (though email checking times should dodge that) and send it to a geographically diverse group. If everyone's IP addre... Is Your Business Success Worth 500 Words?
2007-05-12 03:20:00 They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I'd ask if the potential marketing success of your small business is worth just 500? R.I.P. Search Engine Rankings?
2007-05-12 01:30:00 Well over a year ago I wrote an article here on Search Engine Guide that talked about the need for both search marketers and clients to start looking beyond simple rankings and to place a heavy focus on increased traffic and conversions. After all, in no other area of marketing does "success" equal being one of the top ten of anything in the entire world. Lee Odden has tackled that same subject this week over at his blog and asks if search engine rankings are dead. Lee notes: With the advent of personalization and impending changes with the interface of search results, the notion of ranking seems to be on it's way out. In the past 3-4 years, most SEO consulting firms have been focusing on traffic and especially the past 2-3 years on conversions. Standard search engine rankings as a proxy to sales will become irrelevant, especially as other channels of search have emerged in popularity. If you consider all the traffic opportunities from news search, blog search, social media a... More About: Search Engine , King , Kings

2007-05-12 01:00:00 Posted by Aaron D'Souza, Software Engineer, Search Quality Earlier this year, a bunch of Googlers (Maile, Peeyush, Dan, Adam and I) bunged ourselves across the equator and headed to Sydney, so we could show our users and webmasters that just because you're "down under" doesn't mean you're under our radar. We had a great time getting to know folks at our Sydney office, and an even greater time meeting and chatting with all the people attending Search Summit (http://www.searchsummit.com.au/) and Search Engine Room (http://www.searchengineroom.com.au/). What makes those 12-hour flights worthwhile is getting the chance to inform and be informed about the issues important to the webmaster community. Can't Get Enough on Social Media?
More articles from this author:2007-05-12 01:00:00 It's the topic du jour right now, but people just can't get enough of it. Apparently with people thinking that there's little new left to say about organic search or even paid search, social search is where all the fun conversation lies. So if you just can't get enough, you'll be happy to hear that Kevin Gibbons of SEOptimize has put together a pretty extensive list of articles and resources on the social media, many of which you might not have already read. There's quite a few articles from Pronet Advertising and Search Engine Land and a few entries from the likes of Rohit Bhargava, Search Engine Journal (http://www.searchenginejournal.com), Lee Odden (http://www.toprankblog.com) and Todd Malicoat (http://www.stuntdubl.com). What's obviously missing is some of the social media articles that we've got right here on Search Engine Guide. So, head over to Kevin's blog and check out his collection, but take a look at these articles as well. Stop Putting the Cart Before the H...
