Can't Get Enough on Social Media?
2007-05-12 01:00:00
It's the topic du jour right now, but people just can't get enough of it. Apparently with people thinking that there's little new left to say about organic search or even paid search, social search is where all the fun conversation lies. So if you just can't get enough, you'll be happy to hear that Kevin Gibbons of SEOptimize has put together a pretty extensive list of articles and resources on the social media, many of which you might not have already read. There's quite a few articles from Pronet Advertising and Search Engine Land and a few entries from the likes of Rohit Bhargava, Search Engine Journal (http://www.searchenginejournal.com), Lee Odden (http://www.toprankblog.com) and Todd Malicoat (http://www.stuntdubl.com). What's obviously missing is some of the social media articles that we've got right here on Search Engine Guide. So, head over to Kevin's blog and check out his collection, but take a look at these articles as well. Stop Putting the Cart Before the H...

Posted by Aaron D'Souza, Software Engineer, Search Quality Earlier this year, a bunch of Googlers (Maile, Peeyush, Dan, Adam and I) bunged ourselves across the equator and headed to Sydney, so we could show our users and webmasters that just because you're "down under" doesn't mean you're under our radar. We had a great time getting to know folks at our Sydney office, and an even greater time meeting and chatting with all the people attending Search Summit (http://www.searchsummit.com.au/) and Search Engine Room (http://www.searchengineroom.com.au/). What makes those 12-hour flights worthwhile is getting the chance to inform and be informed about the issues important to the webmaster community. One of the questions we heard quite frequently: Should we as webmasters/SEOs/SEMs/users be worried about personalized search? Our answer: a resounding NO! Personalized search takes each user's search behavior, and subtly tunes the search results to better match their interests over ti...

Forbes Writes on Search Marketing for Small Business
2007-05-10 23:20:00
There's a good article over on Forbes this week that talks about small businesses and whether or not they should be outsourcing their search marketing or hiring a search marketing consultant. They cover the common concern of how much (or how little) time really needs to be spent to keep a small business afloat in the online marketplace and offer up words of advice from a variety of well known search marketers. From the article: Indeed, Google's continuous changes in its algorithms keep small-business owners like Matt Mavir, managing director of Last Night of Freedom, a 10-employee company that puts together bachelor party weekends, busy with search-engine optimization for nearly a third of his working hours. Little wonder: Search -engine results account for nearly 90% of his business. Mavir has kept his SEO work in-house since he founded the business eight years ago, but he said that businesses in very competitive fields should take on SEO consultants. "It's a constant bat...

Discount on High Rankings Seminar
2007-05-10 22:50:00
Earlier this week I posted to announce that I would be joining Jill Whalen in Denver next month for the next installment of her High Rankings seminar. If you've been thinking about attending, here's the little kick that you'll need to make you decide to go. Yesterday, Jill dropped me a note to let me know that Search Engine Guide readers can save 25% off the cost of the conference by using the code "SEG" when you register for the seminar. That takes it from $1400 to just under $900 if you register before the early bird discount vanishes. I believe that this is the first time that viral marketing and social media will be covered at Jill's seminar and it looks like she's got some other new content as well, so even if you've gone to one of her shows in the past, here's a great chance to come back and reconnect on the basics while picking up even more great information. Recapping SEW Live: Columbus
2007-05-10 22:10:00
You may have noticed a bit of a break in blogging here the last two days. That would be due to some time spent talking to a class of Internet marketing students at Ohio State and then heading on to SEW Live : Columbus to teach a morning training class on social media with Matt Bailey and then an afternoon of panels with other SEW Live speakers. It was interesting to get the perspectives that came from both groups and to spend a little time outside of the traditional "search conference" environment. On Tuesday, Matt and I had the pleasure of guest lecturing for the Online Marketing class being taught by BizResearch's Laura Thieme at Ohio State's Fischer College of Business. It was interesting to see how the next generation is looking at things like social media and online marketing and to see how some of our assumptions don't always match up with reality. A good example? Out of a class of about 30, only 4 or 5 had ever heard of Digg. (Though during our class break Matt spotted sev...

Internal Departments & Your SEO Firm - A Play
2007-05-10 21:40:00
Many companies are not aware of the different roles that various departments in their organization will fill when they begin to work with an outside SEO firm. What follows is a demonstration, in play form (bear with me), of which internal departments are involved in a typical SEO campaign and why. It also demonstrates some of the resistance that may be felt by those departments as well as what valuable contributions a company can make to help its SEO firm craft a successful campaign.(skip to "Internal Departments & Your SEO Firm - A Play (http://www.searchengineguide.com/buresh/ 2007/0510_sb1.html)" by Scott Buresh)Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searchengi neguide?i=abnWAZt7 (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searcheng ineguide?a=abnWAZt7) Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searchengi neguide?i=iH8wPuDX (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searcheng ineguide?a=iH8wPuDX) Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/searchengi neguide/~4/115690340 Sourse (http://www.searchengineguide.com/se...

UGC Encourages Linking
2007-05-05 15:34:00
One of the big powers of user-generated content is that it inspires people to contribute and then link to their contributions. We've seen this with YOUmoz, and on several client sites - bloggers and forum contributors and website owners feel the need to link to the posts/comments/pages they've written from their own sites. You can take advantage of this pattern by encouraging and rewarding quality UGC - the better the submission, the more prominence you can give it. A thumbs or rating system can help, and a ranking system appears to be the ultimate. Contests and prizes (particularly non-monetary ones) work terrifically well, i.e. "the contributer with the most traffic to his/her page wins an iPod" - and everybody starts linking to their posts from wherever they can :)

Got a Little Free Time and a Favorite Charity?
2007-05-05 00:21:00
The team over at Bruce Clay are offering up yet another SEO contest. Thankfully, this one ditches the idea of ranking a page for some made up term and instead focuses on helping a non-profit learn more about search marketing so that their web site can have a better impact online. If you've got a favorite charity and some free time, I'd highly suggest that you check it out and consider entering. From the announcement: Our goal for this contest is to create something worthwhile. We want to give a search marketer an opportunity to sponsor a cause s/he believes in and feel deserves more visibility. In return for your time and effort, you?ll be given a free full-conference pass to SMX in Seattle (valued at $1395) and a free seat in our SEO Training ($1450) and Advanced Certification course ($995). This comes to almost $4000 in "prizes" which will benefit not only you but your charity partner as well. (Transportation and lodging are not provided.) For the next two weeks, we're inviti...

I know, I know, you sit around day in, day out thinking to yourselves "gee...I wish I knew more about Jennifer Laycock." (After all, I quite often find myself thinking "gee...I wish I knew more about Matt McGee.") Sure, some things are easy to guess...I like chocolate. I don't like dirty diapers. I don't believe in the Google sandbox. But what about all the other good stuff. How did I get into this industry? What advice would I give a new blogger? Do I own a Hermione Granger style time turner necklace? Well here's your chance to find out. My new friend Wendy Piersall over at eMoms at Home was kind enough to take the time to include an interview with me on her blog this past week. Now I'm obviously not self-absorbed enough to really think that you all sit around thinking about me all the time, but I will say that you might like it for the sake of the marketing advice contained within. Even if you don't care what I have to say, take out the time to check out Wendy's blog. It'...

Online Reputation Management Begins Offline
2007-05-04 22:40:00
Reputation management is critical for all businesses. Even the most customer-friendly companies have likely upset a few people who have vented their frustrations on the web. A Great Way to Deal with Registration-Required Content
2007-05-04 15:27:00
If your site serves up content that requires registration, but you'd like to be able to earn links and show search engines the full text of the piece (rather than just a snippet), consider using the "first 2 visits free" rule. Allow visitors who come to your site to visit up to 2 pieces of registration-req'd content without logging in, and search engines to view the content without restriction. The visitor experience will get you the links to your content (as people naturally discover and share) and the search engines will send you the full traffic your content deserves. Plus, you'll only be registering folks who are really interested in what you have to offer, so you're more likely to get a conversion. Think like an ice cream vendor - the first taste is free, but after that, you've got to buy a cone.

YouTube vs. Self-Hosting Videos
2007-05-04 15:26:00
Normally, I'm a huge fan of hosting any great, viral-quality video privately yourself, on your own site. My feeling is that if it's on YouTube or DailyMotion or any other service, many of the links you deserve for creating the content will actually point to the page on YouTube (and trust me, they don't need any more link love). However, I've recently changed my mind. With YouTube's immense popularity, and with literally millions of people watching the videos that get "popular" in a given sector, I've seen greater value in letting a video get huge on YouTube itself, because if it does, it might get on the popular page in its category or even, the home page itself. In these instances, your brand (if you include it somehow in the video) is getting the kind of exposure you normally have to pay Fox or CBS or ABC millions of dollars for - free. YouTube's rampant popularity means that content hosted there has the ability to reach an audience you could never hope to achieve on your ...

Gray Hat Trick for Attracting Bloggers
2007-05-04 15:25:00
Bloggers are notoriously self-involved (yes, even yours truly) and there's a very good way to play off this feature when seeking to attract blog links. Just follow this short list of steps: 1. Write about a blog post written by the prominent blogger or the blogger themselves on your site (not neccessarily attacking them, though if you have an honest disagreement and present it well, this can work out) 2. Link out to the blogger's post (or their blog home page) 3. Send a few proxy bots through your link to "beef up" the traffic you'd normally send them 4. Leave a comment or two on their blog post 5. Watch as they see you sending them traffic through their analytics and feel compelled to respond (usually with a link back) This can be done positively or negatively and in many cases where you have significant readership, you can eliminate step 3 (we've never done it personally because we've worked with larger properties or conscripted a few friends). I personally prefer sparking ...

Staying One Step Ahead of Buzz-Worthy Keywords
2007-05-04 15:24:00
For many sites that get a significant amount of traffic from current events style searches, it can be hard to predict what you should write about or feature to help target these terms. However, there's a few places that can help: * Yahoo! Buzz Index (http://buzz.yahoo.com/) * Technorati: Popular (http://technorati.com/pop/) * Google Press Center: Zeitgeist (http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.ht ml) * http://tools.wikimedia.de/~leon/stats/wik icharts/index.php?ns=articles&limit=100&w iki=enwiki (http://tools.wikimedia.de/%7Eleon/stats/ wikicharts/index.php?ns=articles&limit=10 0&wiki=enwiki)(that's a good one) From those pages, you'll get a good idea of what's hot right now and what might spread over the next 3-5 days. Use your best judgement and make sure to link to the relevant pages, blog posts, articles on your site about the topic from your home page and other important pages (possibly in a "buzz" or "hot today" mini-section), so you get maximum exposure from the engines.
