Spider-man 3 Bible-Study Guide (no joke!)
2007-05-03 17:52:00
A few years back a friend and I were hitting some golf balls at the driving range. We're having a good time when suddenly I started thinking out loud about the "overhead" that such a business has. What it must cost to run, maintain the grounds and how much money they bring in daily. My friend just shook his head. These things were the farthest from his mind. But not me. I'm a big fan of learning lessons wherever you can find them. And apparently I'm not the only one. Yesterday I ran accross the Spider-Man 3 Bible Study Guide (http://www.infuzemag.com/Spiderman3_Stud yGuide.pdf). I immediatly thought, "How cool is that?" Finding biblical wisdom in a pop-culture geek film! I love it! The guide is a whole six pages long, four if you discount the cover page and the blank "study notes" page at the end. I've only glanced at this (I hear it contains spoilers to the film) but I like what the authors have done here. Image: http://www.searchengineguide.com/degeyter /spiderman3studyguid...

Yahoo's new robots-nocontent attribute
2007-05-03 09:40:00
Yahoo! announced yesterday via the Yahoo! Search Blog (http://www.ysearchblog.com/archives/0004 44.html) that they've introduced a class of robots-nocontent that you can add to sections of your pages to designate those “parts of a page that do not relate to the main content, such as navigation, menus repeated across the entire site, boilerplate text, or even advertising.” The blog post gives examples, such as using this new functionality to mark required legal disclaimers, ads and/or a site-wide generic page header. While they do say that links within sections set apart by the “robots-nocontent” class will be followed, I question the wisdom of using it to mark the site navigation. Since they also say they won't use content tagged with this class as “information for finding the page,” I'm concerned that this would exclude the anchor text of those internal navigation links from being considered toward page relevance. Depending on how your internal...

Putting Together a Blogging Series
2007-05-03 00:00:00
There's an excellent post on ProBlogger right now that talks about the challenges of writing a series for your blog. Having written quite a few series in my own career, I found the post to be full of honest, helpful suggestions that any blogger can put to use. Glen Stansberry, the author of the post, points out the benefit of a series on both links and traffic. He's right. My popular Zero Dollars series of posts is still generating new links and traffic nearly 18 months after I wrote it. I've written quite a few other series over the years that I've been here at Search Engine Guide, I've even working on two separate series right now. On the other hand, I've also dropped the ball on a series before. That's the problem with being ambitious. Sometimes life gets in the way. That's why Glen's suggestion for series success struck me as interesting. I found that the best way to write a blog series is to write it all before you hit publish. Just by writing them all up, and use th...

When Social Media Sinks it's Own Ship...
2007-05-02 23:20:00
Picture this. Your four year old and several of their little friends are having a play date. One of them finds a set of matches. They start to play with the matches and you notice. You immediately take the matches away. Suddenly, all of the kids start to scream at the top of their lungs. They drown out all other sound and they're giving you a pounding headache. What do you do? Well, if you're Kevin Rose you apparently give the matches back to them and put the fire department on speed dial. While I'm a fan of social media, I've also let it be known that I generally view Digg with skepticism. It has it's place, but sites run by consensus (and especially by the consensus of young, male college students) tend to shift from idealistic democracy to anarchy and fascism fairly quickly. Yesterday, we had a chance to see that in action. Yesterday morning, the staff at Digg posted a notice to let users know that they were removing certain posts that were breaking intellectual property law...

Follow the Path, Not the Piece to Success
2007-05-02 21:00:00
Remember when Rosie O'Donnell was crowned "The Queen of Nice"? During her day-time talk show days, Rosie was one of the sweetest women on TV. Then the plug got pulled and, well something happened and there was a fundamental change in her media persona in the years that followed. Fast forward to her stint on The View and Rosie's new 'tude is all the rave, garnering The View it's best ratings ever. And now that she's gone from that show, the networks are all scrambling to sign Rosie to a deal of their own. Putting aside my personal opinion of Rosie O'Donnell, her politics, antics and ignorance, I think Rosie had a good thing going at The View. There she found a level of success with a very specific persona. It's success she's unlikely to find if she transplants that same persona into a different setting. The new found success of The View--and for that matter, Rosie O'Donnell--is not simple because of a new piece (Rosie) that was added to the show, but more because of a pat...

Creators, Critics and Collectors - Creating Social Content
2007-05-02 00:00:00
When it comes to viral marketing and social media, there's often talk of a group of people known as "key influencers." These are the people that serve as a sort of ambassador to the people online when it comes to marketing campaigns. What's often overlooked though, is an understanding of the sub-groups of people within the overall key influencer category.(skip to "Creators, Critics and Collectors - Creating Social Content (http://www.searchengineguide.com/laycock /009931.html)" by Jennifer Laycock)Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searchengi neguide?i=CBV0dnPw (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searcheng ineguide?a=CBV0dnPw) Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searchengi neguide?i=dVmcoyqB (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searcheng ineguide?a=dVmcoyqB) Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/searchengi neguide/~4/113446500 Sourse (http://www.searchengineguide.com/searchb rief/senews/009929.html)

7 Essentials to Search Marketing
2007-05-01 22:10:00
Dean DeBiase, CEO of Fathom Online has an article over at SmartBiz.com right now that lays out seven search marketing principles that will help your online business succeed. DeBiase covers issues like dayparting, pay per call, click fraud, bidding rates and more. They're quick tips, but they're certainly a good starting point to help you decide what you need to learn more about. For example, check out his suggestion when on choosing which pay per click engine to advertise with: Two: The Right Search Engine Mix is Critical: Identical keywords sell for different prices on different search engines ? and produce different results. Just like each television network offers advertisers slightly different demographics, each search engine offers a slightly different product. The challenge for marketers is finding the right mix to achieve the highest return on investment. Should the money go to Google, Yahoo or MSN ? which account for eight in 10 searches? Or, should the money be spent by ...

Are Search Engines the New News Boys?
2007-05-01 21:30:00
If you've ever seen an old American movie, chances are good that at some point you saw the front page of a newspaper spinning toward the screen followed by a young boy shouting "EXTRA! EXTRA!" News papers are hardly sold that way these days. Instead, newspapers and online news outlets are increasing turning toward search engine marketing to drive readers to their web sites. The Wall Street Journal covers this issue today in an article that examines the growing cost of keyword advertising for media outlets. From the article: News outlets say they use search marketing to increase awareness of their Web sites, so that the next time people search for news they visit their sites first, instead of Google or Yahoo. Buying keywords is particularly important for outlets trying to lure audiences with breaking news. It can often take a couple of hours for a new page posted on a Web site to show up in a regular search. The only way for an outlet to guarantee that its site shows up immediately -...

How Much Would You Pay to Get Visitors to Leave Your Site?
2007-05-01 21:30:00
Would you pay somebody to leave your site? No? Think again, because you may be doing it right now, and it's probably costing you more than you think. How's that, you ask? If you're paying for marketing that will drive traffic to your website but have not spent any time or money providing a better customer experience on your website, then you might as well be paying your visitors to leave. *Coming in for a bad landing* The other day I was analyzing a potential client's PPC campaign. They wanted us to review their ads and landing pages to see if we felt we could help them improve the campaign over their own efforts. What I found was pretty striking. This potential client had been running dozens of ads for various video products they sold. The ads were good overall and each ad brought the user to a different landing page, which, for the most part, was very relevant to the search queries. But the problem I found was with the landing pages themselves. They were, to put it mil...

Badware alerts for your sites
2007-05-01 18:50:00
As part of our efforts to protect users, we have been warning people using Google search before they visit sites that have been determined to distribute badware under the guidelines (http://www.stopbadware.org/home/guidelin es#website) published by StopBadware . Warning users is only part of the solution, though; the real win comes from helping webmasters protect their own users by alerting them when their sites have been flagged for badware -- and working with them to remove the threats. It's my pleasure to introduce badware alerts in Google webmaster tools. You can see on the Diagnostic Summary tab if your site has been determined to distribute badware and can access information to help you correct this (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters /bin/answer.py?answer=45432). Image: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3402/1 340/400/badware.png (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3402/ 1340/1600/badware.gif)If your site has been flagged and you believe you've since removed the threat...

About badware warnings
2007-05-01 18:50:00
Some of you have asked about the warnings we show searchers when they click on search results leading to sites that distribute malicious software. As a webmaster, you may be concerned about the possibility of your site being flagged. We want to assure you that we take your concerns very seriously, and that we are very careful to avoid flagging sites incorrectly. It's our goal to avoid sending people to sites that would compromise their computers. These exploits often result in real people losing real money. Compromised bank accounts and stolen credit card numbers are just the tip of this identity theft iceberg. If your site has been flagged for badware, we let you know this in webmaster tools (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.c om/2006/11/badware-alerts-for-your-sites. html). Often, we find that webmasters aren't aware that their sites have been compromised, and this warning in search results is a surprise. Fixing a compromised site can be quite hard. Simply cleaning up the H...

The Quest for Authority Links.
2007-05-01 16:30:00
*What is an Authority Site?* In a nutshell, authority sites are sites of value. They have large numbers of inbound links from similar well linked sites, have been online for a while and tend to be content heavy. Their ?authority? is accumulated by their inbound link structure and passes via link popularity and implied endorsement to the sites they link to. Links from authority sites can lead to a boost in ranking and online credibility and for now, is the strongest of the relevancy criteria when it comes to building links. In other words - getting links from authority sites is highly desirable and a major factor in the influence a link building campaign has on your site. But knowing you need them is only part of the equation, another is to find them. Let?s take a look at a number of techniques and search vehicles you can use to find authority links. *Technorati. * Technorati is one of my all-around favorites especially when it comes to looking for authority sites. Don't Overlook Reviews in Your Social Media Strategy
2007-04-30 23:30:00
There's a lot of buzz and hype right now about the need to reach out to potential customers via social media. Blog marketing, social news submission, YouTube videos and social bookmarking are all being promoted by social media marketers are the key to success in this new playing field. While it's true that companies need to learn how to utilize these new marketing channels, it's also important not to overlook one of the fastest, easiest ways to market via social media. While video watching, blogging and social bookmarking are garnering a lot of attention right now, a new report titled "Social Technographics (http://www.forrester.com/Research/Docume nt/Excerpt/0,7211,42057,00.html)" put out by Charlene Li at Forrester Research shows that it's actually product reviews that dominate usage when it comes to social media sites. Take a look at the following chart put together be Li and her associates. It shows the percentage of online consumers that participate in various forms of "so...

Committing Social Media Suicide
2007-04-30 22:54:00
Sure, it's easy to drink the "I've got to market via social media" kool-aid, but the truth is that if you are going to play, you'd better know the rules. While a little bit of common sense and respect for the social community can take you a long way, Online Marketing Blog's Lee Odden offers up five quick tips to help you avoid committing social media suicide when it comes to marketing your business. The biggest one, in my opinion? 1. Submitting press releases to social news sites. This is social media suicide, but there are marketers and PR practitioners out there endorsing the submission of press releases to social news as if it?s the same thing as submitting press releases to news search engines. It?s not the same thing at all. This kind of content gets the most play at social news communities when it is coverage of an announcement, not the news release. Rather than submitting a press release to Digg, Netscape, Reddit, etc, focus on getting a popular blogger to write ab...

A Good Sense of Humor for Online Reputation Management
2007-04-30 22:54:00
We all know that the team at Google has a sense of humor. It's been nearly a year since they sent a packet of acetaminophen to Marketing Pilgrim blogger Al Scillitani. Earlier this year, they sent the Ask blogging team a new pen when they complained that their's had broken. Now, they've coughed up a Superman cape for a blogger that was told to walk across an eight lane highway while using the Google Transit service. First, a snippet from the post that started it all... So, the thing that sucks is I'm pretty far away from the hotel. I mentioned I took a $25 cab ride to the convention center, but was going to try public transportation on the way back. The new Google Transit (still in Google Labs) mapped my path. The actual bus itself was fine. Where Google dropped me off and told me to walk was the problem. Um. Am I Superman? How the hell am I expected to pull that off? I was stumped. Here I am behind some warehouses in the pitch dark, trying to find out how to get over/und...

Banished to the Google Underworld
2007-04-30 22:22:00
It seems funny that just after I wrote about the Ten Commandments of Search, I stumbled across a Forbes article called "Condemned to Googl e Hell" that examines the often confusing issue of Google's supplemental index. The article includes interviews with several businesses that have found themselves banished to the supplemental results and also features a few quotes from some well known search marketers. Andy Greenburg writes: Google Hell is the worst fear of the untold numbers of companies that depend on search results to keep their business visible online. Getting stuck there means most users will never see the site, or at least many of the site's pages, when they enter certain keywords. And getting out can be next to impossible--because site operators often don't know what they did to get placed there. Google's programmers appear to have created the supplemental index with the best intentions. It's designed to lighten the workload of Google's "spider," the algorithm that co...

The SEO Commandments
2007-04-30 21:50:00
Finally! A fresh take on search engine optimization and marketing. Some days it feels like we're all just rehashing the same thing over and over again, which is why it's so refreshing when someone throws it out there in a new way. That's why when I ran across SEO Refugee's "Ten Comm andments of Search (http://www.seorefugee.com/seoblog/2007/0 4/27/ten-commandments-of-search/)" I had a good chuckle and felt the need to pass it on to you. (Hat tip SEOlogs (http://www.seologs.com/seo-commandments/ ).) It's understandable that many webmasters and search marketers often feel like the many bits of feedback coming down the mountain from the search engines might as well be the "thou shall" and "thou shalt not" lists of old. That's why this take on the "search rules" does a nice job of getting the point across without relying on the same old drivel. A few of my favorites... thou shalt not hide your content, nor serve different versions; for I the god of thy search am a jealous god, visit...

Some Search Engine Techniques - Affect the Rankings Or Spaming
2007-04-30 21:10:00
As there are many ways to optimize a web page, Webmasters should always avoid utilizing black hat SEO techniques so as to avoid getting banned from the search engines. This article discusses some of the most common pitfalls that the Webmasters should bear in mind and how using these techniques can lead to disastrous situation. The most commonly seen black hat technique is keyword spamming. Some Webmasters place a whole lot of targeted keywords in their sites just to boost up the keyword density ratio. Stuffing keywords across the page is not recommended as it adds no value to the users. Webmasters should not focus purely on the density ratio but to go for content readability.Another common method is to hide a significant content from the user by utilizing div blocks. This technique often adopted by the Webmasters when they want to hide a repetition of a series of keywords away from users but still indexed by the search engine bots. Again, this is another bad practice that should be a...

Blog Optimization

*Search Engine Opti mization of Blog Title Tags* One nice thing about blogging platforms is that they're generally very search engine friendly. This is especially true when it comes to indexing: search engines have few problems finding every page in a blog's archive. However, there are a few things that can be done to make blog platforms even more search engine friendly than they are off the shelf. Optimizing Title TagsEvery page of your blog should have a unique title tag describing what's on that page. This can easily be done by including your blog post's titles in the title tag field. Many blog platforms do this by default now, but they tend to do so in a less than optimal fashion. Your archives provide lots of great content for search engines. In fact, the majority of the traffic to your blog will likely come through search engine referrals where people click through from a search result to an archived page of your blog rather than to the homepage. However, your rankin...
SEO Analysis - To get top search engine rankings
2007-04-30 21:10:00
Want to know what it will take to get your website ranked at the top of the search engines? It's all about links. Links are the most fundamental building blocks of the Internet and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). As Google explains on their technology page [google.com/technology/], in-bound links (links pointing to your website from other websites) and Google PageRank are critical to ranking high at the Google search engine. In fact, we've found that inbound links (also called "backlinks") and the keyword optimized text in and around those inbound links account for about 95% of optimizing for the "Big 3" search engines -- Google, Yahoo! and MSN Search. SEO Gap Analysis :If you want to know what it will take to get top rankings for your keyword phrases do the following 4 steps?1) Identify Your Keyword Phrases - Research and identify what keyword phrases your target market uses to search for products or services like yours. List them out. 2) Analyze Google's Top Sites for Y...

Small Businesses Should Know Their Place Online

The Internet allowed many mom and pops to move out of mom and pop status and develop a new kind of corporate identity. But as the e-marketplace began to grow, driving traffic to a new online business became increasingly difficult. While starting a business on the internet today is still relatively easy compared to doing so off-line, it has become more expensive and time consuming than ever.(skip to "Small Businesses Should Know Their Place Online (http://www.searchengineguide.com/degeyte r/009906.html)" by Stoney deGeyter)Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searchengi neguide?i=4VJoFCdg (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searcheng ineguide?a=4VJoFCdg) Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searchengi neguide?i=Gdc5pQwt (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searcheng ineguide?a=Gdc5pQwt) Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/searchengi neguide/~4/113107722 Sourse (http://www.searchengineguide.com/searchb rief/senews/009908.html)

The Value of Targeting the Tail
2007-04-28 05:11:00
Cat Seda has a great response about targeting the "tail terms" with your pay per click and organic search campaigns to a reader question on her blog today. In it, she talks about the heavy competition and low conversion rates for popular phrases and suggests that businesses take the time to dig a little deeper. See, bidding on single words (or even broad phrases) could quickly blow your budget on pay-per-click (PPC). For example, if you sell car insurance, DON'T bid on "insurance." With the competition these days, even "car insurance" may be too broad and cost too much (generally speaking, more competitors mean higher bids). Instead, dig deep to find a targeted tail term like "florida car insurance quote." Now that's targeted! True, not as many people will search for that keyword, but the ones who do are definitely your ideal clients. That's why tail terms are very, very profitable. It's good advice and one that I often try to remind businesses of myself. For more on this idea, ...

Conversation With Your Customers - Let Them Decide?
2007-04-28 04:10:00
Greg Sterling makes an interesting suggestion today over at Screenwerk. When it comes time to introduce your next site design, let your users make the decision. What sparked this idea? Well, AOL just introduced their new site design and apparently, the reception hasn't been all wine and roses. Greg points out that the design has been criticized for being too much like Yahoo!'s. Take a look for yourself and see what you think... Image: http://www.searchengineguide.com/grafx/ao lscreen.png Image: http://www.searchengineguide.com/grafx/ya hooscreen.png Umm...yeah. Assuming there were a range of options that circulated internally, here's what AOL probably should've done: put the top 2-5 designs up on the site and have users vote and provide feedback on them. This approach would've gotten some good PR about the involvement of users in the product redesign. The company might have even built some sort of "contest" or similar event around it. I wonder, what would have happened if AOL h...

If You Can Only Do One Thing in Search
2007-04-28 02:20:00
This isn't a new concept, but I'm going to say it anyway because 1.) it never hurts to go back to basics and 2.) there are always new readers. If you can only do one thing to your web site to try and increase your organic rankings, then make sure that one thing is the ability to edit your title tag. While links tend to rule the day in search, the reality is that people are going to link to you whether you make it easy for them or not. Sure, you can take steps to make it easier, but they're still going to link to you if you have good content. That's why if you've only got time to focus on one thing, it needs to be optimizing your title tag. The code for the title tag is usually found at the top of a page's source code below where the tag begins. To edit your title tag, you'll want to look for the section of code that appears like this: A Small Business Guide to Website Promotion and Increased Search Engine Traffic The title tag is the section of code that defines what shows ...
