Build Links Through Social Communities (But Not How You Think)
2007-04-23 19:50:00
Much has been made of the link potential of Web 2.0 and of the social networks that have sprung up in the last two years. While it's true that there's link potential there in terms of marketing and link bait tactics, Debra Mastaler puts together a great post over at Search Engine Land today that talks about some overlooked ways of building links on the new web. Many of the communities and associations understand the value of well ranked pages and design their sites to be search engine friendly. Some like SelfGrowth.com (who ranks #1 on Google and Yahoo for the term self improvement) appreciate the value of consumer generated content and actively seek out articles and papers written by its members. To house this content, SelfGrowth offers both an article and general directory to which any member may join and submit a link. From SelfGrowth: We want to add your website to our complete directory, and there is absolutely no obligation to even return the link. Our goal is SIMPLY to cre...

Making Link Bait and Viral Marketing Work - Part One
2007-04-23 17:30:00
Two of the most popular buzz words in the online marketing realm right now are link baiting and viral marketing. These two tactics are a great way to build links and to build branding when constrained by small marketing budgets, but there are several things you need to remember when planning these types of campaigns. Supplemental Index and How to Overcome it
2007-04-21 11:57:00
Google ? The Evil Part of It or Is It So? Webmasters over the world are quite surprised to see a change in their Search Engines Result Page (SERP) the reason for it well its because of the number of pages moving in to the *supplemental index*. Many have their own thoughts on this issue and so I have mine. *Supple mental index*, which is considered to be a bit different from the* main index*, is acting like a demon. Why? Consider you having a large site with 100 of pages and suddenly for the site operator you seem to have 30 results coming up from the main index and rest of them being transferred to supplemental index. People say and most of them agree on the *sitemap *issue that it provides google a better insight to the inner pages of a site having pages deeper than two levels from the home page. I have pointed out some more information on supplemental result based on my experience and research. The factors are noted below: 1. The problem mainly arises when you have a new domai...

It's Who You Know...But Not How You Think...
2007-04-21 00:30:00
It's long been said that it's not what you know, it's who you know that will get you places in life. While that may be true, to an extent, in the real world, it's often VERY true when it comes to thinks like link building. It's absolutely essential when it comes to link baiting. Have you given some thought to who your friends are lately? One of the key points that is often missing from talks and articles about generating good link bait is the ability to plant the seeds. You see, no matter how good your link bait is, no one is going to link to it if they don't know that it exists. While it's true that you can submit your own links to social bookmarking sites, submitted links from random people often get buried before anyone has a chance to view them and vote for them. This is why a good link bait launch includes emailing off a notice about the content to a few people that you think might blog about it. That doesn't just mean sending it to your mom and your best friend, it mea...

Google Bombing Isn't Dead Quite Yet
2007-04-20 23:51:00
After all, my incident did spawn a small effort of linking to the page of the attorney who sent me the cease and desist letter using the phrase "overzealous trademark attorney (http://www.google.com/search?q=overzealo us+trademark+attorney&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe =utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:e n-US:official)" and sure enough, there's Ms. Collins in the number one spot on Google . Just this week, Danny reports that efforts to Googlebomb Stephen Colbert's site for the term "greatest living American" have succeeded in less than a week. Sparked by a visit to a taping of Colbert's show during SES NY last week, Jonah Stein from Alchemist Media asked Colbert what he'd love to see his site rank for. He replied "giant brass balls." Well, "greatest living American" isn't quite the same...but it sounds a bit more professional when passing the word at business meetings. So how is this working if Google stopped Googlebombing? As Danny explains, we'll just have to wait for th...

Copywriting Makeover: Value vs. Vision - Part 2 of 2
2007-04-20 15:30:00
In Part 1 of this series, we discovered that explaining the value your products offer is only one part of the copywriting process. Creating a visual image is another. While Wholesalers USA knew their target customers better than most companies do, they needed help with two areas: optimizing their copy for the search engines and incorporating visual imagery. Whose Your Favorite SEO's Celebrity Look-a-Like?
2007-04-20 15:00:00
Matt McGee has put together a cute little piece of link bait over at the Small Business SEM blog. He takes more than a dozen well known faces from the search marketing world (yes, my mug is among them) and offers up a picture of both the SEM and their celebrity look-a-like as suggested by MyHeritage.com (http://www.myheritage.com/). There are some pretty impressive matches among his list, though I had a little issue with mine. You see, Matt used a photo from last December at SES Chicago for mine. Any woman that has had a photo taken of her just 10 weeks after giving birth knows pictures from that time period certainly don't "count." So here's what Matt came up with: Image: http://www.searchengineguide.com/grafx/co mpare1.jpg Me? Janeane Garafolo? Great, so I'm the snarky funny girl with dark hair. (Personally I thought that was Lisa Barone, but apparently she gets to be some gorgeous actress.) Having one of those "I'll show him moments" I took a more recent (and better) photo of...

Search Engine Optimization Goes Mainstream
2007-04-20 04:31:00
Gord Hotchkiss, a respected search behavior guru, has an interesting Media Post Search Insider piece (http://blogs.mediapost.com/search_inside r/?p=512) about trends within the search engine marketing world and what happens when it goes mainstream (i.e. businesses take this on too - not always with the help of established pros). He wrote: "One of the noticeable trends I've been seeing is the tendency for large organizations to want to ramp up their search efforts internally. They want to jump into the search pool, but they're afraid to take the leap with any of the search vendors currently in the space. They'd rather try to figure it out themselves." What he didn't say is that search engine optimization can bring temporary satisfaction even when done poorly. If you improve some copy and page headings, your traffic can improve. But then what? How do you go from #14 to #8 on Google. It takes a bit of effort. Then you have the links game. Which links? Which anchor text? Which audi...

Custom 404 Pages Aid Search Engine Optimization
2007-04-19 22:10:00
Despite your best efforts, users will click on broken links, they'll mistype a URL, guess wrong at what they think a URL should be or try to access a bookmarked page that has since moved. Users do all sorts of things to get themselves confused; sometimes it's not even their fault. And when they do, they'll meet your 404 page. Lost Rankings Due to Site Redesign or Spam?
2007-04-19 22:10:00
We recently released our new website in Feb. and prior to release we held the number 1 position on Google for [our main keyword phrase] and the number 3 slot and number 2 spots for [additional keyword phrases]. Within days of our release our rankings fell through the roof as did the number of quality Google leads that were coming through our doors. Is it normal to fall like this after the launch of a new site? (skip to "Lost Rankings Due to Site Redesign or Spam ? Nikon Focuses in on Bloggers with New Campaign
2007-04-19 20:56:00
More and more companies are understanding the value of approaching bloggers for product reviews and Nikon appears to be the latest. Word is spreading that Nikon has selected 50 bloggers to send a $1000 camera to in the hopes that they'll both write about using it and post the pictures they've taken with it. It's an interesting idea, but I can't help but wonder if some of the terms of the campaign haven't been tainted my the recent bashing Microsoft received over their own blog marketing plan. You may recall that Microsoft and it's public relations firm (Edelman) sent out review copies of Windows Vista to some tech bloggers in the hopes of generating some positive online buzz. The problem wasn't that they did this, it was that they sent Vista pre-loaded on a $2000 Acer Laptop and some bloggers failed to disclose that last little tidbit. Thus, to some reading the reviews, it seemed like Microsoft was attempting to buy positive publicity. Let's be clear though, the issue reall...

Mainstream Media Target Readers with Pay Per Click
2007-04-19 19:50:00
While the mainstream media and newspaper outlets are often charged with failing to understand or utilize Internet advertising, it was interesting to see the response that many of them had this past week to the horrible tragedy that took place at Virginia Tech. In an article published yesterday evening, The New York Times reports on the media's use of paid search advertising to drive traffic to their own coverage of the event. From the article: If you Googled "Virginia Tech shooting" or "Virginia shooting" this week, the Internet search engine served up dozens of links to news about the university massacre. Yet some media outlets weren't taking the chance of missing readers' attention by being bumped down the list. The New York Times and The Washington Post, for example, bought keyword ads that put their coverage into the prominent "sponsored links" atop the Google results page. So did The First Post, a British online news magazine. The Times, CNN and Fox News got similar l...

Finding Success Outside Your Target Audience
2007-04-19 17:22:00
It's not often that a company finds success outside of its intended target market. But that seems to be what is happening with the makers of Slingbox. If you're a TV junkie like me you likely have a TiVo (http://www.tivo.com). But it's the real junkies that have a Slingbox (http://www.slingbox.com/)sitting right on top of the TiVo box. If you have not heard of Slingbox, here is the quick rundown. Its a unit that connects to your TV, cable box, satellite receiver and/or TiVo so you can both control and watch your programs through the Internet. I bought my Slingbox because when I travel I hate being limited in what I watch. If I'm gone for several days my TiVo programs pile up while I'm stuck watching whatever gets piped into the Hotel room, commercials and all. My Slingbox lets me tap into my TiVo at home so I can watch my recorded programs.I am SlingBox's target audience. But recently SlingMedia, the makers of Slingbox, found something interesting. Between 35 and 45 percent ...

This report shows you the top phrases that other sites use to link to the pages of your site. Now, we've enhanced the information we show you in the following ways: * We've expanded the number of phrases we show to 200. * You can now see the variations of each phrase (for instance, with different capitalization and punctuation). * More sites now have access to the anchor phrase report. So, if you didn't have this report before, you may have it now. * We've brought back the report showing the most common individual words in anchor text (you asked; we delivered!). * We've expanded the number of common words in anchor text and common words in your site that we show to 100 each. Emailing Bloggers for Links
2007-04-18 15:56:00
A long-time practice of link building is to request that a blogger review your site or review a piece of content you've written, but a far better tactic is actually to request their participation. Blog gers love to be linked-to and love to be quoted (and held in high esteem). If you humbly email, telling them you're a fan and you'd like their input for a project that includes content of some kind - answers to a few questions, a quote, a list, etc. - they're usually more than happy to contribute. Once you launch the content, email them again to let them konw it's finished and more often than not, you'll earn those links. Repeat this process several times in several related blog sectors and you'll soon have hundreds of powerful links. The only catch - you need a place to display this kind of content; an articles section or blog of your own.

Using Subdomains to Dominate the SERPs
2007-04-18 15:54:00
If you're attempting to conduct some reputation management through the search results, subdomains are a good choice for very powerful domains. You do have to be careful, because subdomains don't always pass the same quality/quantity of shared link love (remember my rising tide theory (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-rising-ti de-lifts-all-ships)) around the site. However, subdomains, unlike subpages, can fill up the entire search listing if properly employed. You'll need a very strong site first, preferrably one that has strong links into several top-level sections and is ranking #1 for all the searches you want to dominate. From there, divide up some top level pages into, for example, services.domain.com, contact.domain.com, articles.domain.com, etc. You'll find that these pages will often rank right below your main domain (and push down the other content) in the SERPs. Note that this is an advanced tactic and one you should really only employ for reputation management/SERPs dom...

Requesting removal of content from our index
2007-04-18 03:40:00
As a site owner, you control what content of your site is indexed in search engines. The easiest way to let search engines know what content you don't want indexed is to use a robots.txt file or robots meta tag (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters /bin/answer.py?answer=33570&topic=8846). But sometimes, you want to remove content that's already been indexed. What's the best way to do that? As always, the answer begins: it depends on the type of content that you want to remove. Our webmaster help center provides detailed information (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters /bin/answer.py?answer=35301&topic=8459) about each situation. Once we recrawl that page, we'll remove the content from our index automatically. But if you'd like to expedite the removal rather than wait for the next crawl, the way to do that has just gotten easier. For sites that you've verified ownership for in your webmaster tools (http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools) account, you'll now see a new ...

2007-04-18 01:50:00
Do you want to know the secret to selling things successfully online? It's finding the RIGHT WORDS for the job. Consider this: Most visitors take 10 seconds or less to decide whether to stick around or move on to the next site. Just 10 seconds -- that's all the time you have to convince them YOUR site is where they want to be. It doesn't matter how well-designed your site is... how high your search engine ranking is... or how amazing your product is. If your words don't grab your visitors and keep them glued to your site, they're going to leave -- and probably never return. Of all the words on your site, the most important are the ones in your HEADLINE...

7 Reasons Google's Paid Link Snitch Plan Sucks

By Friday everybody is ready for the weekend and its often just difficult to get into the work rhythm of the first four days of the week.(skip to "How to Make Fridays Product ive Again (http://www.searchengineguide.com/degeyte r/009825.html)" by Stoney deGeyter)Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searchengi neguide?i=PDcMk2iV (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searcheng ineguide?a=PDcMk2iV) Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searchengi neguide?i=Yu0Rdo2R (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/searcheng ineguide?a=Yu0Rdo2R) Image: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/searchengi neguide/~4/109768273 Sourse (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/searcheng ineguide/~3/109768273/009827.html)

Cookie Crumblers Corrupt Conclusive Counts

Have you ever been suspicious that your traffic stats are overinflated? Well, you should be, especially if you use cookies to track user analytical data. Paid Links are Paid Links for a Reason
2007-04-16 21:41:00
Matt Cutts created quite a stir by asking people to report paid links (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/how-to-rep ort-paid-links/)to Google. He has generated nearly 170 comments in less than two days. He tried to offer an explanation for those that managed to get through all of the comments. Google is already looking at paid links and wants as much information as it can get. No one has to be in the position of pointing out links they like and don't like. But it is tough for Matt to couch this as merely information gathering when he's asking people to use a spam report to share their perspectives and examples. At any rate, paid links should drive traffic. If they somehow bypass scrutiny and influence organic rankings, all the better. But let's call paid links for what they are. Why pay if they're not doing their job? Sourse (http://www.fathomseo.com/blog/2007/04/pa id-links-are-paid-links-for-reason.html)
