New Features to Annuity IQ
2008-06-10 06:28:00
Annuity IQ has been put in an awkward position since we launched nearly 3 years ago. We are committed to not sell annuities to the public, but we are inundated with consumer requests for annuity quotes. After much debate and discussion we decided to continue to not sell annuity products. However, to help consumers we have teamed up with a firm that will provide annuity quotes to those interested. The page can be found here: Free annuity and life insurance quotes While we are not in any way connected with the firm providing the quotes it is a better way for consumers to compare and shop for annuity products. The firm we have teamed up with is also there to help financial advisers in their quest to grow their business. advisers can now receive qualified leads to help grow their business and improve the lives of investors. To sign-up and start receiving leads financial consultants should go here: Annuity Leads The goal is to help both the consumer and the financial adviser and lessen o...

ING Makes a Change to LifePay Plus
2008-05-26 02:33:00
ING decided to make some changes to its LifePay Plus living benefit after a recent upgrade just issued last summer. The new benefit was revamped last week and Annuity IQ is working on updating the information as soon as we receive the prospectus. This is just one reason why we exist as the industry constantly upgrades and changes its benefits and contract information. It is next to impossible for advisers to keep on top of these changes and consumers stand little or no chance of ever understanding how these benefits work. Through Annuity IQ we have helped well over 1500 people to understand and compare living benefits on variable annuity contracts. We continue to serve advisers and the public and are in the process of updating our site and the way our information is presented. Keep checking back! Exit Stage Left

For years The Hartford’s Director variable annuity was the rock of the variable annuity industry. For almost a decade it was the best selling broker sold variable Annuity product, behind TIAA-CREF. Last week that legacy came to an end as the Director variable annuity ceased to exist for new investors and was folded into the Hartford Leaders product. The Hartford’s Planco division once boasted that the Director product will always be the best selling variable annuity with the Leaders product a close second. Sadly, they were the last to see that the writing was on the walls years ago and single managed variable annuity products were irrelevant. In 2005 they tried to turn the ill fated Director Annuity around by introducing a multi-managed approach, they added some 55 different sub-accounts from various managers. What they did not count on was that their success with the Hartford Leaders product would undo what they were trying to accomplish. The Leaders variable annuity ha...

Clarification of Annuity IQ?s View onEquity Index Annuities
2008-05-04 07:35:00
Do to the reaction from our comments on the Dateline NBC story, “Tricks of The Trade”, where they performed an expose of equity index annuity sales we feel that our position needs to be clarified. While Annuity IQ likes annuities, immediate, traditional fixed and specifically variable annuities we do feel that equity index annuities have little place for most investors. Below we will further explain our position. Surrender Schedule: While the annuity surrender schedule needs to be taken into consideration it must not be the only litmus test for any investment. if the surrender schedule fits the needs of the investor then it is a non-issue. However, some contracts should not be available to older, say above the age of 70, for some clients, specifically surrender schedules that surpass 10 years. While there is liquidity for most annuity products while they are in the surrender period we feel that contracts that have surrender schedules longer than 10 years is a bit excess...

What is The Deal With Income Replacement Funds?
2008-04-29 03:17:00
The hottest trend for investment firms is planning for income distribution for the Baby Boomers. As the Boomers age they are seeking investments that will provide income for their retirement needs. The insurance industry has had a lock on the guaranteed income angle for the better part of 200 years through annuities. Now, mutual fund firms are trying to get in on the action. The hottest trend, besides ETF’s, are income replacement funds which will allocate the investors money and then start to pay a stream of income after a set number of years. The income is derived from income paying securities, dividends and good old fashion withdrawals. The big question is will these products work? Well the jury is out because all of these products are brand new and have zero track record. With the existing strategies it seems feasible that they will work if the market only goes up and interest rates increase, but then again all investments look good in that scenario. The truth is only ti...

Annuity IQ Updates are Now Complete
2008-04-28 06:45:00
The existing variable annuity contract data has been updated. However, there are still a few minor updates that need to be addressed, like purging companies we are dropping. There are also going to be new contracts added to the database. Genworth, Amperiprise and Lincoln are on deck to be added in the very near future. Our Founder
2008-04-16 05:05:00
It is with deepest concern and sympathy that Annuity IQ reports that it’s founder, Scott DeMonte, was diagnosed with a rare cancerous tumor which was successfully removed almost 3 weeks ago. While the cancer was rare the doctor’s do expect a full recover, but the type of cancer is recurring and his fight will more than likely continue for many years to come. Scott was diagnosed with a Myxoid Liposarcoma, which is a deep tissue tumor that usually strikes the victim’s extremities such as legs and arms. Scott has requested that a portion of all sales be donated to the American Cancer Society to help others fight and survive all types of cancer. Going forward for the rest of the year Annuity IQ will donate 10% of all profits to the American Cancer Society. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery goes out to Scott and his family. The Tax Man is Here, Yet Again
2008-04-16 04:42:00
Today is the last day to mail your taxes and as many people now know their investments also come with tax liabilities. Many people will tell you that investing in mutual funds is a better idea than using a variable annuity because of the long-term capital gains treatment. The irony is that the long-term tax treatment is only relevent to sales of your mutual funds that are more than 12 months old and only on a portion of your total mutual fund distributions. The vast majority of your distributions from your mutual fund account was probably short term income distributions. That means that the gains from this account will be taxable at your ordinary income tax bracket, not the famed 15% long-term capital gains rate that many claim you will be taxed at. With turnover rates of mutual funds hovering around 100% annually it is highly unlikely that you will pay long-term capital gains on your investments in the future, unless you sell your fund. To add insult to injury the sub-prime meltdo...
Dateline NBC Annuity Story
2008-04-14 02:05:00
When talking about annuities the media is dumb. They never let the public know what type of annuity they are talking about or the fact that there are many different types of Annuity contracts in the marketplace. This story was NOT about variable annuities, instead it was about equity index annuities. The problem with major media outlets is the fact that they try to tell a story in an hour or less. While the agents “caught” on the show looked like they were trying to pull a fast one, and some were, Dateline never let them finish their sales pitch. While Annuity IQ agrees that equity index annuities are not good investments, we also all agreed that the story was not telling the whole truth about the products. They also did not tell their viewers that the sales people were selling specific companies index annuities. More than likely the agents were selling Allianz, Midland National and Aviva equity index annuities, most of those products are not good for investors. The bot...

An Epiphany
2008-03-19 03:25:00
This week was a historic week by anyone?s means of measurement. We witnessed a catastrophe that was beyond all belief, Bear Sterns went out of business. To say we were stunned is an understatement. While it is no secret that Annuity IQ knew the housing market was going to implode (it was written about on this very blog over a year ago) the shear scope of the situation is beyond belief. The sub-prime debacle is being blamed for this implosion, but it is not just sub-prime, it is AAA rated borrowers who are now falling behind to the banks. The Fed, in their infinite wisdom, greatly underestimated this entire situation and they still are. The buyout of Bear Sterns by JP Morgan saved the markets as the 5th largest broker in the world declaring bankruptcy would have caused unbelievable carnage in the equity markets. The problem is Bear was not the only one in trouble, rumors are abundant that Lehman Brothers and even Merrill are still in trouble. What can stop this liquidity problem? No...

And The Truth Shall Set You Free
2007-06-26 17:47:00
Money Magazine and Mr. Updegrave have written another mind numbing article where he made a startling revelation to his readers. Whether or not they saw the revelation is another story, but it is right there in print. In this article Mr. Updegrave said, ?For example, I’m fine at tinkering with retirement calculators and monitoring investments - though I’m careful to keep my wife informed. She’s good at the big-picture stuff.? The part of the quote I want to comment on is the, ?She’s good at the big-picture stuff? because this is his overall problem. He is fine with ?tinkering? with calculators, but is poor with the big picture stuff, both of these admissions run dangerously close to self admitted lack of knowledge and imagination. As an expert shouldn?t you do more than just ?tinker? with things and shouldn?t you have a grasp of ?the big picture?? You would think so, but apparently this stuff does not matter to him. Financial advisers do more than just ?tinker...

Taxable vs. Tax Deferred
2007-06-21 19:28:00
How many times have we heard that variable annuity tax deferral is worse than capital gains on taxable accounts, but is it really? I have seen tons of mathematical examples of how the capital gains tax rate is superior to tax deferral, but very rarely, if ever, do you see a real example. I wanted to show a very straight forward illustration on how tax deferral is better than taxable accounts. I ran 2 hypothetical illustrations using American Funds Investment Company of America one with taxes and the other tax deferred, but I did include a 1.5% M&E cost along with the fee of the mutual fund. In a nutshell, the tax deferred account won, even with higher fees. Here is the scenario $100,000 investment made into ICA by a couple who earn $100,000 a year in income. Their Federal tax rate is 25%, long term capital gains are at 15% and their state taxes, which most people forget about, are 5%. I did show that the taxes were paid from the distributions, after all how can you show a true...

?Take the ?Annuity Rescue Challenge? with Jefferson National? I Accept Your
2007-06-19 19:34:00
Jefferson National is hitting the street hard with their Monument Advisor flat fee variable annuity product. They have issued a challenge to compare their flat fee variable annuity to other variable Annuity contracts, boldly stating that they are cheaper than 99% to 100% of the contracts currently available. With their flat fee at $20 per month it would seem they are correct, but deeper analysis would prove otherwise. Here is where they get you: ?Jefferson National?s Monument advisor has a $20 flat insurance fee on more than 97% of our underlying funds. Certain funds also have a transaction fee ranging from $19.99 to $49.99 per transaction, depending on the number of transactions per year. See the prospectus for details. Like other variable annuities, the customer pays fees of the underlying funds selected (currently ranging from 0.23% - 2.72%; except for Rydex VT Inverse Gov?t Long Bond Fund which is currently 5.12%) plus the fees of any advisor hired. The range of underlying fund ...

Dumping an Annuity
2007-06-18 18:12:00
I had canceled my Money Magazine subscription last month and today was contemplating why I canceled it. Then I got to the article that initiated my cancellation. It was titled; ?All You Really Need to Know about Dumping an annuity? by Denise Topolnicki. This has been an increasing popular title in many articles over the past couple of months. What disturbed me the most about this article was it bundled both equity index annuities and variable annuities together. These are two completely separate investments and need to be identified as such. The variable annuity is a registered product which has standardized rules for sale and is governed by the NASD. A variable annuity product also offers sub-accounts to invest in which gives you significant upside potential along with certain guarantees through living benefits. The equity index annuity is a guaranteed investment that performs as well as a traditional fixed Annuity and is regulated by the states. This product has a minimum guarante...

Oh, No Another Fee Based Advisor Hates Annuities!
2007-06-12 19:08:00
This is really no big surprise many fee based planners hate variable annuities. I think it is simply because they hate to see fees go to an insurance or investment company instead of going in their pocket. The fact of the matter is a fee based planner will charge, usually, just as much as a variable annuity. Do I care what a fee based planner charges? Nope, not in the least, I am for people making a living. What I am against is them calling the kettle black because at the end of the day they usually are even with variable annuities when it comes to fees. Oh, wait! They claim you should index your money instead. I guess I am wrong in my assumption and they are correct. The question is why in the world would you simply invest money for a client in an index fund and then charge a fee for it? In my opinion that is robbery when the client can simply go to the mutual fund company direct and invest and save the 1.5% annual fee the adviser would charge them. In another article written by a ...

Annuities May Pose Tax Woes, but The Woes Were Never Mentioned
2007-06-12 17:30:00
Today in The Cincinnati Post Bruce Williams answered a question from a concerned investor about a variable annuity. A lot of anti-broker and anti-annuity advice was given, but the readers question was not answered. The reader switched to a variable annuity from mutual funds in a 403 (b) account. Now, I am not going to argue ethics about the transfer as I do not know enough to know why this switch occurred, but I know the answer was bunk. In a nut shell the reader asked: ?Through a 403(b) plan, I had mutual funds with a balance totaling $51,000. I am 47 years old and plan to retire at 55. A financial planner advised me to switch this money to a variable annuity. I have been reading more and more about variable annuities, and I am terrified I’ve made a huge mistake that I cannot correct. Am I stuck with a poor investment that will not be good for my retirement? The emphasis was added by me because I found that portion of the question disturbing to say the least. I will address t...

More Training for Equity Index Annuity Producers in Iowa
2007-06-11 18:55:00
In response to multiple lawsuits filed by 8 states, with more states likely to follow suit, Iowa ?s insurance division has issued a new set of rules for equity index annuity producers. Now, in order to sell EIA products in Iowa the producer will have to complete a class covering suitability and other issues EIA?s may bring to the table. The producer must complete this new class by January 1st 2008. This is fairly interesting because the course that the producers have to take will cover the features and benefits available on equity index annuities. It will also cover the basics such as early withdrawals, surrender charges and the advantages and disadvantages of the product. Now, this sounds like a good idea, but how stupid do you think people who sell equity index annuities are? Producers, generally speaking, know how annuities work and how the benefits work and most know these basic things about EIA?s because most annuities work the same way. The only thing different are that they wi...

Equity Index Annuities
2007-06-03 05:23:00
Now, as many of you already know I am no fan of equity index annuities as most of them are big on promise, but short on delivery. I also cannot believe I am going to utter these words, but I just got done reading an article from my favorite Mr. Burns titled; ?Equity Index Annuities Fall Short? and I agree with him. Not because it was an anti-equity index annuity, but because everything he wrote was true. In my own comparison on these products I found only one that performed well over the long term. All of the more widely sold products performed pretty badly and those popular products happen to pay the highest commission. The numbers do not lie and he used real studies to show that the average rates of return on these products are on par with traditional fixed annuities. The problem with EIA?s is the fact that they have so many moving parts and the insurance carrier can change the caps every year. This means you have no idea what your cap is going to be year over year. That is the bi...

Flat Fee Variable Annuities
2007-05-29 01:49:00
I was happy to see an article on the disadvantages of flat fee variable annuities on the WSJOnline publication yesterday. Even though it painted all annuities as being bad it did bring to light that the flat fee variable annuity is not very good. Actually, this article was strikingly similar to an article I wrote on the issue 6 months ago, found here. It also hammered home points I made about these products on the WSJ forum at the end of April. This, of course, troubled me. When you Google the term Flat Fee variable annuity or flat fee annuity my site, Annuity IQ, comes up on the first page of the results. This led me to review the information I provided on both my site and the WSJ forum. As I reviewed the information I provided and then at the information the WSJ provided, it was almost identical. What troubled me the most was the fact that since the information I provided was so close to theirs it made me wonder if they used my story as the foundation for this story. If they did t...

Hypocrisy?
2007-05-28 01:36:00
OK, so I was checking out my RSS feeds yesterday, like I do every morning, and I ran across something unusual. I have an RSS feed, or did, right to Mr. Burns blog and to my surprise it was no longer active. Being the inquisitive person that I am, I then visited the site to see what was going on. I could not believe my eyes! Talk about being a hypocrite, this guy who for years has stated the following: Always index your money or use Vanguard. Never pay commissions. Do it yourself, it?s easy. He am always right. I guess he never meant a word of what he preached because now he is an active participant in selling fee based investments. He and a group of other people are using Dimensional Advisor Funds and charging a management fee for the service. Now, granted the management fees are low, they range from .50% to .25% for investments over 4 million, but it still stinks of hypocrisy. Seriously, he has been talking about the ?Couch Potato? method of investing for how ...
