Design Business: No Spec!
2007-07-06 20:45:00
This post is a little bit different than most, but one I think is very important.  There is a movement against doing Spec (or Speculative) Work.  Spec Work is work done without the guarantee for being paid, or free work done for the chance to get paid or receive more work. This type of work ...

Packaging Redesign: Coca-Cola Can
2007-07-02 05:10:00
Awhile back we posted about the new Cherry Coke can. I commented that I thought Coke was moving away from there roots and their brand collateral. So I was really excited to see the new coke can: before: after: With the new can, Coke cut through the filler. They did away with the faux water droplets, the needless swooshes, the drop shadow and the halftones. The new Coca -Cola Classic can is plain and simple…Coke. They understood that we know what Coke is and we already want to drink it. The can doesn’t need to sell us on how great the contents are. This is a bold move in the face of Pepsi’s new campaign of design overload on their summer cans. Coke is an icon and it is great to see it regain its classic imagery.

2007-06-28 13:33:00
Unum has just undergone a huge logo redesign: before: after: The logo redesign couldn’t have gone better!  Going from the uber lame “Unum for President” type logo to a new hipified Web 2.0 type. Oh, wait.  You do know what Unum does right?  No?   Well, can’t you tell from their new logo?  No?  Oh well, ...

Are static logo?s becoming a thing of the past?
2007-06-24 13:49:00
I just read an interesting article from Thought of the Week, about the trend towards logos that can easily “flex” and adapt to each particular campaign or medium. Are the days of having one non-changing logo to use for all applications becoming a thing of the past? Below are a few examples of ...

Identity Redesign Review: Olympics, London, 2012
2007-06-14 13:06:00
There has been a lot of discussion recently regarding the new Olympics logo for London in 2012.  The new logo has been pretty well discussed elseware, so I don’t want to harp on it too much.  I will just say though, I think 1993 is over. It is interesting to see how the logo has changed ...

Design Review: Best Designed Religious Websites
2007-06-10 13:02:00
I think it is fairly safe to say that most churches aren’t particularly progressive. And that holds true with the rate that they adopt new technologies. So I was pretty surprised by an article I just read entitled: Top 10 Church and Religious Websites . Some of these sites are just stunning. See ...

Identity Redesign Review: Fifth Third Bank
2007-06-03 13:52:00
It seems like some companies just never quite get it. They do all the right things: hire big name designers (Deskey, of Post It and Starbucks fame), give them a substantial amount of time for development (18 months), write a fancy press release (link). And somehow it just doesn’t add up. ...

Identity Review: 2008 Presidential Campaign Logos
2007-06-01 00:37:00
Presidential campaign season is in full swing and the new batch of campaign logos is out. Have a look: The majority of these logos stay on the straight and narrow (a.k.a. boring and safe). Stars and flags abound! Duncan Hunter, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson, Jim Gilmore, Mitt Romney, and (surprisingly) Hillary Clinton all opt ...

Design Innovations: The Fridge Pack
2007-05-24 22:48:00
Sometimes a seemingly obvious innovation can change everything. Remember when soda 12 packs were 4 cans across and 3 cans high? Because the entire 12 pack wouldn’t usually fit in the refrigerator, people would put a few cans in at a time, drink them, forget to refill the fridge for a few days, ...

Identity Redesign Review: Rembrandt Toothpaste
2007-05-21 22:55:00
I once heard that every time a company decides to overhaul their image and embrace an appealing design aesthetic, an angel gets it wings.  Actually, I just made that up, but I assume that it is true, and that there is an angel indebted to Rembrandt.  See below: Before: After: The simple and minimalist design really worked in ...

Identity Redesign Review: Delta Air Lines
2007-05-17 13:33:00
Delta is rising heroically from the ashes of Chapter 11 “restructuring”…sort of. Never the less, what better time to implement a new corporate identity than now? bankrupt: “restructured”: It is pretty standard practice at this point for a company coming out of bankruptcy to stay as far from the color red as possible. So ...

Pringles has released a new line, Pringles Premium. Pringles is known for their distinctive packaging. Who doesn’t recognize that tennis ball container shape as Pringles? So when designing a new line, it would be obvious to design within the parameters of their image. Right? Wrong! Pringles took the road less ...
