A survey released Wednesday (April 4) showed a substantial decline of 3%, or 79 tons.North America and Africa are the main sources of the production declineNorth American output declined by 26 tons.Africa?s output declined by 17 tons.South Africa?s gold production dropped to an 84-year low in 2006, registering a 7,5% year-on-year decline.Oceania's production fell by 21 tons last year. Latin America was the only region to return a meaningful rise, posting a 35 ton, or 7% increase. Still the world?s largest mine, Yanacocha, registered a sharp 22% drop in output in 2006.New mines, such as Veladero, Amapari, Mulatos and Choco 10, located in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela, generated over 20 tons of new gold in 2006.
