Bad Me: Identity Theft Where It?s Least Expected
2007-05-07 22:43:00
Today's Identity Theft news will make you suspect your own mother of stealing your social security number. In Florida, an 88-year-old woman's caregiver stole her identity and went on a $3,300 shopping spree. And what's worse, she also got her high on crack cocaine. Wow. TSA, the division of Homeland Security charged with keeping our airway's safe from bombs and the like, apparently has a security problem of its own. Last TSA "lost" a hard drive that contained social security numbers, bank data, and payroll information for 100,00 employees. And finally an ex-banker from Indianappolis was sentenced to 20 years from stealing almost $200,000 from the bank that employed him by creating a fake loan in a friend's name, among other shady practices.

Good Me: GAO Issues Guidelines for Data Breaches
2007-05-01 17:08:00
Although it took a year to develop, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued guidelines to protect government workers ? in response to the Dept. of Veteran Affairs breach last May. Knowledge is power no matter where you live. The majority of residents in the United Kingdom want to be informed when there has been a data breach. Wouldn?t you? More importantly, wouldn?t companies want to be armed with the tools to inform customers of a breach? And finally, Australia is moving in the same direction as the U.S. on this topic.

2007-04-30 17:46:00
We will celebrate the day when identity theft is no longer a problem for consumers across the globe. However, until that day, identity theft is here and we need to deal with it. Reinforcing the magnitude of this problem, once again, identity theft tops the list of scams reported to the FTC in 2006. We like it when the bad guys get caught. Here?s a story of a criminal getting 10 years for identity theft. In lighter fare, here?s a spoof article on children running an identity theft ring.

Good Me: ID Theft Task Force Keeps Corporations Accountable
2007-04-24 16:25:00
We applaud the President?s Identity Theft Task Force ?s recent recommendations that urge both government agencies and the private sector to safeguard social security numbers. In addition, the Task Force recommends that the private sector alert customers when there?s been a data breach. Not to toot our own horns, but Worldwide Assistance has been offering this service for about 8 months now. Speaking of data breaches ? rather ironic timing, don?t you think ? the social security numbers of thousands of people who received loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have been exposed for years in a publicly available database. Scary.

President?s Task Force To Unveil Identity Theft Plan
2007-04-23 21:51:00
Today is a big day down at the Federal Trade Commission. We are anxiously awaiting the announcement of the findings of the President ?s Identity Theft Task Force . Nearly a year in the making, this group?s research will play a significant role in establishing laws to protect identity theft victims. For example, in September 2006, the task force recommended that identity theft victims be compensated for the time it takes to set their credit records straight. Good stuff. Also, here?s what our friends at Wired Magazine?s blog had to say about this. Finally, the 2007 National Community Shred campaign is underway.
