Regulation of UK newspaper and magazine websites
2007-08-20 23:30:00 Just spotted an interesting post from Heather Yaxley about the UK’s press self-regulatory body, the Press Complaints Commission, ruling about video content presented on a website belonging to the Hamilton Advertiser. The Press Complaints Commission operates a code of practice, and earlier this year extended its jurisdiction to editorial audio-visual content on magazine and newspaper websites. Heather’s post focuses on the value of regulation in enhancing the credibility of these sources compared to similar, but unregulated, online news resources. She also notes that This highlights the need for care in supplying material to online media - but also emphasises an opportunity to take action in the case of materials that may break the PCC code. It’s worth noting that the PCC’s jurisdiction only extends to what it calls “editorial” content on member websites - which doesn’t mean everything that appears on such sites. The PCC... Social media as a recruitment tool
2007-08-19 21:33:00 I’m a bit late to this one, but news comes via Sarah Stimson of Indigo Red’s new approach to recruiting PR people. The firm has launched VlogYourJob - advertising job vacancies in video format and allowing job hunters to sign-up for RSS feeds to be kept up to date with new jobs. The site’s looking a bit sparse at the moment, with only a couple of vacancies listed. That said, I think this is an interesting approach to recruitment - given the competition for PR practitioners anything that a recruiting company can do to differentiate itself to potential employees is a good thing. For job hunting PR types being able to watch video about roles being recruited should give a deeper early insight into the recruiting company, its people and the role. The challenge for recruiting companies is to be able to produce a video that gets over who they are without falling into the many pitfalls of corporate videos (I know it’s not recruitment, but it’s been a yea... How to: use free tools to track your organisation’s coverage on the i
2007-08-11 22:32:00 There’s an interesting discussion happening on my CIPR Diploma students’ discussion group about social media. One of the posts there mentioned that there are so many blogs/websites/discussion forums that it’s impossible to keep track of all of them. I’ve been using a bunch of free tools to track keywords on the web for several years now - but I’m amazed how many people don’t do this. So I thought it’d be useful to show just how easy it is to keep a good eye on keywords being used on the web using regular search engines, RSS and a couple of other free web services. In this post you’ll find five steps to set up automatic notifications of the keywords you choose - so you’re notified automatically as soon as any of the search sources you choose picks up a mention of your keyword anywhere on the web: Step 1: Choose your keywords To keep things simple, I’m going to just use a single keyword - the name of my home town: &... Gobbledygook in public relations
2007-08-09 06:43:00 David Scott has a great new manifesto on the Changethis website that’s well worth downloading. It tackles the over-use of jargon, hype and generally meaningless terminology in news releases and marketing copy. David explains well why words and phrases like next generation, flexible, robust, world class, scalable and cutting edge are over-used by marketing and public relations professionals, particularly in the technology sector. David then sets out why this kind of language becomes commonplace in many sectors, and offers some thoughts on how to improve the quality and effectiveness of your copy, whether it’s for marketing collateral or for a news release to the media. Brands matter to kids
2007-08-08 22:36:00 Spotted a piece of research today that made me happy as a marketer and sad as a parent: researchers in California have shown that when presented with identical samples of McDonald’s food in branded and unbranded packaging, children showed a genuine preference for the branded food: Almost 77% said the branded french fries tasted best while only 13% preferred the non-branded fries The effect even seemed to apply to foods that might not traditionally be seen as relevant to the McDonald’s brand: 54% preferred McDonald’s-wrapped carrots versus 23% who liked the plain-wrapped sample While the sample size is quite small (63 children aged 3 to 5 years old), this does provide strong evidence about the role of brands in achieving product differentiation. In this kind of test if everything else is genuinely the same, then the perceived difference in taste can only logically be attributed to the power of the McDonald’s brand among the children (worth noting that by ... It?s about people not the technology

It’s about people not the technology
2007-07-31 23:47:00 I’ve seen a fair amount of commentary recently about social networking sites, in particular Facebook, being banned from many workplaces. This article from the Telegraph is fairly typical of the coverage I’ve seen, and the BBC has a longer commentary piece on the issue here. I am experiencing a mild feeling of deja-vu here. It’s just under ten years since I left university and landed my first job as a graduate marketing trainee at Boots. At that stage email and internet access were just becoming common at work - and I remember a fair amount of controls being implemented for what sites we could visit. The motivation for these seemed to be an underlying assumption that visiting websites was a non-productive activity and could only be relevant to work in the minority of cases. Thinking about that now makes that assumption seem ridiculous. The internet is an integral part of most working days now and is accepted as such in most organisations. I can’t help thinking... It’s been flat out…
2007-07-27 23:53:00 It’s been almost a fortnight since I last managed to write a blog post - which is pretty much the longest the blog has gone without tending since last Spring. My days and evenings have been well and truly absorbed by a combination of a big restructure proposal at work, a client website project in the evenings, my CIPR diploma studies and training for a marathon in early September. My RSS reader is showing just under a thousand unread items. Tonight’s the first time I’ve had to sit down and try to catch up. Hopefully normal service will be resumed very soon. [in case you’re wondering, the pic is of me having completed a very hilly 10k road race a couple of weeks ago] Blogging, General, NewsBlogging, General, News © Simon Wakeman - Marketing, public relations and digital communications 2007. | Permalink | 2 comments Want more? CIPR Diploma study day
2007-07-16 19:04:00 Spent today up in London at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations HQ meeting with fellow students on the institute’s online diploma course. This was the first time course participants and lecturers have actually met face to face. We’ve been studying since early June and using forums, webinars, podcasts and wikis to share learning and experience. It’s always slightly disconcerting meeting people face to face who you’ve previously had dealings with online. You feel like you know a bit about them but at the same time seem unfamiliar when you eventually meet them. My fellow students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and indeed countries, with students coming from as far afield as Romania, Bahrain, Russia and the Cayman Islands. We had some good discussions about the theories that we’ve been studying in the early days of the course. It was also good to learn that I wasn’t the only one who’s finding switching betwe... Is asking for blog comments unethical?
2007-07-13 23:21:00 There’s been a good old blogosphere mini-storm brewing over the past few days around Debbie Weil and an email she sent on behalf of a client (GSK and its blog Alliconnect). One of the recipients, David Murray, posted his thoughts on the email that he received: Hi everyone, This is a shameless request. I’m working with GlaxoSmithKline on theofficial corporate blog for alli, the first FDA-approved, OTC weightloss product. You may have seen the TV ads. While traffic to the blog is growing, readers seem shy about leaving Comments . You can help jump start the two-way conversation! Take a peek at theblog at http://www.alliconnect.com. If you’re inspired or provoked, leave a comment on any entry. No needto say that you know me, of course. It really is kind of neat that a Global 100 company is doing a bloglike this. It’s not easy. - D Debbie also posted a similar message on her blog, asking people to check out the new blog and leave a comment if they felt so incline... More About: Blog , Unethical
