Accepting second best
2007-07-09 22:47:00 Every day on my drive to work I pass a Little Chef restaurant. Around six months ago it had new fascia signs installed, but this one on the front appeared to be too small for the sign it replaced, leaving a fair-sized and visible gap on the left hand side. Since then the sign hasn’t been replaced or fixed up. If you settle for second best on the outside of your business, what does that tell your customers about what goes on inside? branding, customer+experience, Customer experience, little+chef, signage, visual+identitybranding, customer+experience, Customer experience, little+chef, signage, visual+identity © Simon Wakeman - Marketing, public relations and digital communications 2007. | Permalink | 2 comments Want more? Vive le Tour de France!
2007-07-09 00:18:00 OK, forgive me the continental flavour of the headline…it’s been a good day with the sun shining on Kent. The Tour de Franc e came through Medway and finished with a Brit taking the honours in Canterbury. Throughout the route the race looked well supported, and I was particularly pleased to see good crowds in Medway. I spent the morning watching the pre-race build-up and race itself in Gillingham, at the first sprint section of the race. Aside from fielding phone calls from various council colleagues and keeping tabs on what was happening in other parts of Medway, it was nice to be able to forget about the communications challenges that have gone with the event over the past couple of months and enjoy the spectacle of the world’s largest annual sporting event visiting these shores. The race is preceded by the publicity caravanne - a parade of floats and other promotional vehicles that entertain the waiting crowds. Unfortunately where I was standing they... Le Tour de France - it’s finally here
2007-07-08 00:29:00 It’s been a pretty hectic week, meaning lots of late night working and no time for proper blogging. And the reason for this? The Tour de France Grand Depart has arrived in London, and the race will spend around 20 minutes passing through Medway, en-route to the stage finish in Canterbury tomorrow. Medway Council is one of Transport for London’s partners in hosting the race. It’s been a really exciting experience to be working on an event of this scale, even though my involvement has mainly been focussed on Medway rather than the event as a whole. I first attended a meeting about the race coming to London and Kent back in late 2005, and have been working on it ever since. There have been more media launches than I thought ever possible for a single event, including a huge media conference in Paris last autumn. The main part of our work in Medway has been in the past three months. The geography of the area and the routing through Medway means that we’ve had to ... More About: Tour de France , Finally , Fina

Chip Griffin on the new media cocktail
2007-07-04 22:51:00 Convergence and niches are the two main themes of Chip Griffin ’s new e-book “The New Media Cocktail “. At 31 pages it’s not a quick read, but it’s well worth the time investment as piece of thought leadership on how the media landscape is changing. Chip talks about how convergence of media channels, professional and user content, applications and content is changing media, and how the power of this convergence will be focussed on niches - potent groups of people with similar interests. You can download Chip’s PDF from http://www.pardonthedisruption.com/NewMed iaCocktail.pdf. What does the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive mean for marketing and

What does the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive mean for marketing and
2007-07-01 19:51:00 Earlier this year I wrote about a European directive that’s being enacted into UK law by April 2008. The directive is called the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive and the UK government is currently running two consultations on its implementation in the UK - through the Office of Fair Trading and the Department for Trade and Industry. To put it very simply, the directive aims to stop businesses treating consumers unfairly. It seems to act as a blanket back-up to many existing laws that protect consumers (such as the Consumer Credit Act, Sale of Goods Act). Buried deep in one of the consultations (p46) is a list of 31 practices that are deemed unfair. These practices won’t be ones that are practiced by reputable marketing and PR practitioners. They include dodgey things like: Falsely claiming that a product is able to cure illnesses, dysfunction or malformations. Or how about.. Explicitly informing a consumer that if he does not buy the product or service, the trader?... More About: Marketing , The U , Merc

Non-UGC sites appear to convert better, which comes as no surprise as companies need to engage more cleverly on UGC sites and in social media than just placing advertising. Discovering more about “digital mums” Some interesting data and information about women with children and how they use the internet. Social media adoption in Canada Use of social media has doubled in the last six months in Canada. Women are driving the increase. 16% of Canadians with web access have downloaded full-length movies in the past month. UK adspend on the up Spending on press, TV, radio and direct mail fell, with the overall growth being driven by online, cinema and outdoor advertising.
