Elevator speech about business blogging
2007-11-05 22:48:00
Some weeks ago, a friend asked me what’s all this buzz about blogging and how could blogging help his business. As a note, the products he is selling are an email server, so we are talking about b2b sales. And, I should be ashamed that I wasn’t able to provide a good answer to combat all his barriers in believing blogs can be good for business. So I’ve decided to prepare an “elevator speech” about business blogging (in fact 2). If you are not sure what an “elevator speech” means, Wikipedia says: “An elevator pitch (or elevator speech) is an overview of an idea for a product, service, or project. The name reflects the fact that an elevator pitch can be delivered in the time span of an elevator ride (say, thirty seconds or 100-150 words).” The High-end elevator speech (if you are playing smart): “Sales are about creating emotions. Blogging opens a new communication channel for companies to create buying emotions in a more per...

Hiring in a bootstrapped company
2007-11-05 22:30:00
If you started a bootstrapped company and got so far to hire your first employees, I can bet an arm and a leg that: you got so many things to do that is impossible to make them all by yourself. it’s essential that the things are done as efficient as possible. I can also go a little further and think that in most cases you might not have a “proper office” and still have a home based business. Before reading the first resume, there are a number of things that you need to consider. Delegate tasks, accept mistakes and loss of productivity and spend money. By far the most challenging aspect of hiring your first employees is to get used with the idea that you will have employees. I’m thinking at the following: Employees cost money. In the beginning, the money are scarce. You probably don’t even pay yourself what you deserve, so how about paying your employee more than you’re paying yourself? Brrrrr…..and still, it happens. Learn to delegate. Y...

Entrepreneurship fear of failure
2007-11-03 19:51:00
I wrote before about Entrepreneur fear - now its time to write again. It seems that back in 2005 I have approached the “fear subject” from the perspective of an entrepreneur wanna be that is looking to start a business. Now, almost 3 years later, I feel like writing more about Entrepreneurs’ fear, because I know more about it. I believe we should in fact talk about 2 types of fear: The start-up fear The fear to keep it going. There are plenty of resources on the “start-up fear”. This article on “Entrepreneurs being scared of failure” actually puts some interesting numbers: “Almost four in ten would-be entrepreneurs are too scared of failure to do anything about their business idea”. Director of small business at Orange Business Services, Martin Lyne, says: “It’s not the hard skills holding us back so much as our lack of self confidence and fear of failure”. Back in 2005, I’ve defined the start-up fear as...

John Crickett’s Top 100 Business Blogs
2007-10-30 21:47:00
Small Business Entrepreneur blog made it to the place 78 which basically put me in the tops! While the Top 100 Business Blogs is based on Technorati and Alexa rankings which make it a little inaccurate, the beauty of the list is that it really brings together the most important business related blogs - a great reading list. Number 1 on the list is my all time favorite, Dane’s Carlson’s Business Opportunities Weblog. I believe that if you would like to find out what these blogs are about, it would be a little hard to check all 100, so here is my shortlist of blogs I’m reading: Copy Blogger  - Copywriting tips for online marketing success Seth Godin - Seth has been called “the Ultimate Entrepreneur for the Information Age” by Business Week Bootstrapper - the most amazing resource on getting the last Tops of everything… Young Go Getter - targeted to young people Small Biz Survival - my old friend Becky McCray Go Big Network - nice network for entre...

The (almost) complete guide to migrate b2evolution to Wordpress
2007-10-29 22:09:00
I’ve decided to change b2evolution blogging platform a while ago, being very annoyed by the lack of new features, comment spam and lack of compatibility with other systems. Simply put, nowadays everybody does Wordpress pluggins that make the blogger life easier, while b2evolution is kind of dead for at least 1 year (INMHO). The bad news is that if you have an established b2evolution blog it’s quite hard to switch. The good news is that I managed to do about 90% of the migration. Basically right now, the only non-migrated elements are the pictures that I used in the posts and the linkblog (which makes it an “almost” complete migration). First of all, when I decided that I really have to change the blog platform, I found quite some resources on the procedures - unfortunately all proved wrong or incomplete (this includes non-compatible migration scripts, no documentation available). So here are the steps to migrate from b2evolution (latest versions) to Wordpress...

Rent-a-car 2.0 = Zipcar
2007-10-10 23:33:00
I’m opening a new blog category: Innovative Business Ideas. It might just give you…ideas. Now, let’s talk about an amazing idea I’ve seen last week, what I would call Rent -a-car 2.0. If you are not familiar with the Web 2.0 concept, well, to make it short, it’s a new Internet Era (well, at least geeks are saying so). It’s different from what we, normal folks call Internet (they call this Web 1.0.) and they say it has already started with social networking like Facebook and stuff like that. So I’m going to talk you about 2.0. in rent a car business. Meaning it involves some sort of web services, and is fundamentally more evolved than the normal Rent a car services. It’s called Zipcar and it’s available in USA and UK. So what’s so great about Zipcar? Well, you can rent a car by the hour and you can pick it from a location near you. Let’s say you just need the car for 2 hours to take you from the office to the airport a...

Feeling discouraged by your start-up
2007-10-07 10:59:00
Just like any other entrepreneur I have days when I feel very bad about my company and what we have accomplished so far. I was just about to write a post to describe about the discouraged feeling when I’ve came accros and excellent description from a fellow blogger, Frank Addante: “It is very, very hard to remain positive 100% of the time. You may hire someone that doesn’t perform 100% to your expectations. You might make a decision that wastes money. You might delete a file that costs you time. You might accidentally say the wrong thing to the wrong person. You might have people trying to discourage you. These things will always exist.”. Now, if you look at the Frank Addante about page, you will see that he is an accomplished entrepreneur: “Frank Addante has a successful entrepreneurial track record, having started 5 companies, resulting in one IPO and two acquisitions.Mr. Addante was an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist, was nominated ...

Following my Million Doll ar Entrepreneur challenge I’ve got 2 answers so far: Shawn Hessinger from bootstrapme.com asnwered the question here with the following: Leave my current full-time job Bring in enough-about $40,000 a year by my rough calculations-to support my family while building my business venture. The challenge goes further to Tom Pick at WebMarketCentral Blog. Jared Reitzin from Entrepreneur success blog also answered the challenge with the following statements: In order for me to feel good about doing well in business, I need to accomplish a lot more than just increasing my wealth. For me, true success would be accomplished by making a large social impact that changes the way people do things. The idea that your first million is the most difficult is true, but this is because a.) it takes a while to get to a million and b.) you are learning everything at the same time and trying to have the persistence to not give up when you make bad decisions and things go ...

Monetize your blog with PayPerPost
2007-10-06 14:15:00
This is a paid review, but I would never review something that I don't find interesting, useful or at least a good subject for my readers. Being now a long time reader of TylerCruz blog I especially enjoyed tha he is displaying publicly his Internet revenue sources - the so called "blog earnings". If you keep watching his results as an Internet Entrepreneur month by month you will notice that paid reviews are a good income source, and especially PayPerPost. OK, so I decided to see what's this about and I signed up with PayPerPost and a number of other paid reviews services to give them a try. It took me about 2 weeks to find out that PayPerPost has some essential advantages over it's competition, that really make my life easier. First of all, I was very impressed about look&feel of the "blogger dashboard" - the place where you can manage all your activities. And not only that it looks good, it's also easy to move around even for someone like me that never used such a system...
