The million dollar entrepreneur
2007-10-04 21:07:00
I get the chance lately to speak with a lot of entrepreneurs or entrepreneurs wannabees. They all seem to agree on 2 things: - having a million dollars in the bank is the minimum amount to feel ok about your entrepreneurship - the most difficult challenge is to make the first million. So what’s your challenge? I challenge you to asnwer the 2 questions: - What’s the minimum amount (or accomplishment) it would take to make you feel ok about your entrepreneurship? - What is the most difficult challenge that you face in reaching it? Let’s see what Shawn Hessinger from www.bootstrapme.com thinks about. Shawn? I’m also challending Jared Reitzin from Entrepreneur Success Blog to answer the question! Jared?

Using viral techniques to promote your business cards printing service
2007-10-02 23:11:00
You would say that printing business cards is such a low end comodity that it's very hard and maybe useless to promote this type of services "the big way". I mean...I think there is a company providing these kind of services every mile in my town. So how can you diferenciate and use innovative promotion techniques to drive attention (and customers) to your shop? Viral Marketing. Wikipedia says:"Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness, through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet. " So basically is about spreading news like fire! How can you do "viral marketing" to increase the awareness over your business cards service? Here is an example: I've got contacted by Eric Windsor from www.younggogetter.com that announced there is a nice co...

Blogging advices from Internet Entrepreneur Tyler Cruz
2007-10-02 22:35:00
After reviewing Tyler Cruz blog some time ago, I've got an un-expected reply from Tyler with some very nice advices on how I could improve Small Business Entrepreneur blog. I will take them one by one, and add my point of view on them: 1. Read my You?re Not a Rock Star post. After reading the first 2 lines I was sure Tyler tries to tell me how "inexperienced" I am, but getting passed the initial frustration, I discovered the article is very good on saying "ads on blogs are annoying", especially if you are a beginner. I have to agree that it makes no sense put annoyance on the blog if you are to make 0.14 a day. I took Google Adsense out - but please, please let me play around with other advertising techniques to see how they go. Consider getting a new blog theme or else improve on your current one with some custom graphics and personality.. That's right on target. I completely suck at designs... Get back to posting, preferably once a day (it seems the blog was abandoned...

Entrepreneurship stress follow up
2007-09-26 22:21:00
After my initial post on Entrepreneurship stress I received a quite nice feedback from my readers and I’ve finally ended up on doing an interview with Jamie Lentzner from JPD Mom – Running a business while raising a family – priceless to find out about her entrepreneurship story. Jamie has a very interesting article on Entrepreneurship stress - what she calls the Stress Monster : “This year, uh - let’s just say Mr. Stress Monster has parked his big ol’ Stress ass on my couch, he is watching TV, eating Cheetos, drinking beer, making a royal mess, and does not seem to be leaving anytime soon - I think he showed up around the beginning of June. The worst part of it is that sometimes he actually wakes me up in the middle of the night to discuss things (okay, truth be told he does it EVERY night around 3:00 a.m.) No, I swear I think he has moved in permanently….” As my company is now in its third year, 2007 seems to be by far the most str...

How to start a business from your corporate cube: a response
2007-09-12 21:02:00
I've came across Penelope Trunk's article about starting a side business while working for the MAN. I'm a part time entrepreneur - I should know something about How to start a business from your corporate cube . Actually I wanted to post a comment there saying that some of the points can be considered on the dark side and could get you into trouble, but noticing a long list of comments I decided to make the reply on my own blog. I have my doubts on the following subjects: 4. Get on a stupid project at work. First of all, I don't like working on stupid projects. I simply hate it, and working on too many would mean a sure exit path for me from the job at the MAN. And secondly, working on interesting/demanding projects at the regular job keeps me focused and gives me ideas and knowledge about doing these things. I might not know how to make a business plan, but if I'm working hard to make one for my 9 to 5 job, it means I will be able to make one for my side business as well....

Entrepreneurship lesson from... a non-Entrepreneur
2007-09-12 20:30:00
This week I got a real Entrepreneur ship lesson, from one of my colleagues, a "non-Entrepreneur". The story goes like this. I have this colleague, Octavian, that every time I look at his yahoo messenger status message says how happy he is, day by day every day (various texts, so it's not a forgotten status). Now, that's a complete blasphemy for an continuously worried and tired part time entrepreneur like myself. (I have to admit that I've been on the dark side of not being excessive happy all my life). Ok, so on Monday, I couldn't take it no more, and I asked Octavian how does he manage to be happy all the time? (In fact I said that I'm really unhappy with his everyday happiness :) Answer hit me in the face like a true and genuine Entrepreneurship lesson: "I'm setting small, reachable goals to myself very often. Accomplishing these small goals most of the time make me very happy. For the bigger goals, I make sure I have enough small reachable goals to keep me happy until th...

Reply to "Romania in one post" blog post
2007-09-11 19:05:00
I didn't have any time today for blogging, but I've read the Romania in one post - The thoughts of an IT professional and it really troubled me and made me unhappy. I couldn't find who is the guy writing this blog, no about page - it's like he is hiding from Google but reading in between posts I found out he left Romania 15 years ago. I've read somewhere that Romanians are the nation that hurts itself most from all the other nations in the world by the bad publicity made by it's own people. It seems this is the case here as well. NOTE: if you are reading further this post, I don't have anything personal against the named blog and owner. Ok, so the reason it got me so discontent and ready to put work aside to answer his story is that while what he is saying might be true, I couldn't find a single good word about Romania. And I need to make things right by commenting on some of his ideas and bring some more new ones. So from the long list of complains about Romania I will...

A new week is starting: entrepreneurs vs employees

Entrepreneurship stress
2007-09-07 18:50:00
For some reason, people believe that entrepreneurs are the happiest persons in the World. That happens mostly because people get to know about entrepreneurs only when they got to the "spending time golfing while burning money in my Porsche" period. I mean, entrepreneurs are not famous while spending nights working for their businesses and for an unsure outcome. Actually entrepreneurs have to endure large amounts of stress starting with the moment they think they might start a business and until the exit point. Entrepreneurship stress comes from many sources, so let's make a list: Signing contracts with the customers. Is my offer good enough? Will the client pick my solution? Contract completion. Can we finish the job on time? Quality is good enough? Will the customer be happy with the results? Getting paid. The customer has delayed payment. Will he send the money or do I have to fight him in the court? Competition. Damn, they just took my most important customer. What ar...

How did famous bloggers start their famous blogs?
2007-09-06 21:14:00
Just the other day I've been rejected by Blogitive: "Thank you for applying to Blogitive. Unfortunately, your blog does not currently meet our requirements. We need to see a most recent 90 day active posting history of at least 10 new posts per month. If you increase your rate of posting, please feel free to reapply in a few months." Not a big deal anyway, especially since their blog is NOT updated since May 2007. So while I don't think evaluating a blog on the number of monthly posts it's really an accurate way to measure the blogging quality, it did however make me think about how did famous bloggers start their famous blogs? Interesting and again interesting! Let's scavenge their archives. ShoeMoney by Jeremy Schoemaker. Jeremy started ShoeMoney on October 11th, 2004 with So I met Paris Hilton. I'm not sure if starting with such an "attractive" subject was made on purpose, or it just happen, but what a great way to start a blog! On the last archive page, a nice artic...

Entrepreneurship lessons from Bangkok, Thailand
2007-09-05 21:54:00
I've read an article by Somjit Likitsataporn in the Bangkok Post about the start-up difficulties. I have to agree with most of the point raised: (entrepreneurs) "have unrealistic dreams of how they will develop and run their enterprises. They foresee employees running around following their orders, and lots of customers in the store." Yep. I do however think that without the insanity and unrealistic dreams, most of the businesses would never start. Fame and fortune are the things that drive entrepreneurs around the World. They do what I called "day dreaming". "Too much confidence can ruin the new" (entrepreneur). Very true, but statistically speaking, only bold entrepreneurs make it big. Entrepreneurs have to wear 47 hats to run a business as Bob Walsh says - they have to have confidence in wearing at least some of the hats. "People tend to give up even before they should". True again, and no comments on that. "Break-ups among business partners" Sadly enough, I experienc...

How green is a Small Business?
2007-09-05 21:20:00
I personally come from a culture (East Europe) that don't have any values towards ecology and environment respect. But still, how green is a small business? Of course, at some level, being environmental friendly also means cutting costs. Turn off PCs at night, shut down the air conditioning. It's green and it's good for the small business costs. But what about small businesses that are involved in real production, taking raw materials and making the end-user product? Do small businesses afford to have the latest production technologies available? Do they afford to make a proper waste disposal? Investing in new technologies, processes and know how id very costly for any small business. It cuts through the profits; Fredric Paul says "Going Green Is Big Business - Not Small Business " and points out an excellent resource: GreenBiz - Daily News and Resources on Green Business, Sustainable Practices, Environmental Innovation. GreenBiz has been founded by Joel Makower, writer, speake...

How I "tricked" Tyler Cruz to visit my blog!
2007-09-04 07:03:00
Tyler Cruz is (IMHO) the new kid on the block Web Entrepreneur - he is 24 (damn this makes me look old). He missed that "brag about myself" attitude that most established web Entrepreneurs have and still keeps a dose of innocence and that's why I read his blog daily, right after Seth Godin and Shoemoney. I recently saw in one of his posts that he is looking for guest posters and a contact link and I though this might be a good enough reasons to get me pass through the anti-spam filters and actually get in contact with the real person. This actually worked, and I could see him in my logs :) I didn't got to make a guest post, but this doesn't stop me from saying something about Tyler: You will get to know lots of things about Tyler from his About Page, how he started being an Internet Entrepreneur and making money from his sites. He does some nice reviews on software he uses for his blogging (like for example how to Automatically Backing Up Your PC Daily) or about using Anal...

SOB like in Successful and Outstanding Blog gers If you have read my latest guest post on the Business Opportunities Weblog, about Why do Entrepreneur ?s Ignore Their Time?, then you know that I have bad habits in spending my part time entrepreneurship time (can I use "time" twice like this?). As I mentioned on my guest post, I spend quite some time reading and analyzing visitors logs on my site. This way I noticed a new interesting link pointing to the Small Business Entrepreneur blog :) It seems that I've made it to the Liz Strauss Successful and Outstanding Bloggers list . There are stories that Liz never sleeps !! which I can confirm as she answered my e-mails on the fly :). She's making blogging a better thing showing that the strength of the blogosphere comes from relationships, interconnectedness, and community. Here is what I got from the About Liz Strauss page: "According to EatonWeb, ?Liz Strauss is perhaps the most influential relational blogger on the Internet.?" ...

Nataly Kogan's 5 dark secrets of Entrepreneurship
2007-08-14 21:55:00
I actually feel physical pain reading Nataly Kogan's 5 dark secrets of Entrepreneurship . I've came across her blog looking something to cure my "crises of confidence" and she says: "But being an entrepreneur involves consistently overcoming crises of confidence. You feel hopeless about making progress, you think your business is doomed, you think you've made the worst decisions ever. This is a crisis of confidence and you have to work very hard to overcome it. It's a horrible feeling." Quickly had a look at what she's doing to find out that she "is the co-founder & CEO of Work It, Mom!, an online community and resource for professional moms." I have no clue why she left her job as a venture firm in New York? Maybe she will write about it later. Seems like an interesting start-up.

7 myths and reasons to be an entrepreneur
2007-08-14 21:20:00
It's so amazing to see so many different opinions on why you should or not be an entrepreneur. I just found some new lists of reasons pro and contra from Graham Lutz blog. You should start with the 7 Myths of the Entrepreneur that tries to raise some questions about some popular believes regarding entrepreneurs and business owners. I personally can confirm all the 7 myths and Graham's comments with a special note on: "set my own hours? you mean ?work 16 hours a day 8 days a week for the next 5 years.? - only 16 hours?? it's more like 20... Then going to the "7 Reasons To Be an Entrepreneur", I think they are great. Not sure about point 2: "No More Cube!". Because if you are just like me, then you will want to grow your business to a point where you can afford an office with cubicles :) Let's see what's he going to write next?

Cheap labour, the first sign of bad work efficiency
2007-08-11 09:25:00
From time to time I hear on TV some reports on how bad the work efficiency is in Romania. And on the other hand, with the same frequency I hear how much some employees work for some companies and how you are at the mercy of the employer with the overtime that never gets paid. Every person I know, young or old has stories about how much they work. So what's going on? It's bad work efficiency. Most managers think that because labor is so cheap is always better to hire an extra cheap man than to improve processes, technologies and tools. Let's get some examples to see what I'm really talking about: CRM Usage Most of companies don't use (and they don't even know they should use) CRM systems. They use excel and word, because investing in a good CRM seems always more expensive than hiring some more people. Agriculture Most of the agriculture is done by...horse !@#! And now, as it was a very dry year we see reports on TV about lost crops because it haven't rained in a while. Beca...

Financing a business start by credit card
2007-08-07 21:57:00
If you remember my guest posting on the bootstrapme.com blog about keeping personal and business finances separatelly, I've summarized in several examples the ways in which you might get into financing problems that might need your personal money investment. Of course the examples where made mostly from my Eastern European perspective, where banks are not so keen in offering loans. That's why I tried to find out more about other ways to finance a new business, and with all the controversy around, it seems that some entrepreneurs decide to finance their start-up using credit cards. That's why I found this article on Financing a small business with a credit card interesting. I especially enjoyed these ideas: Don't mix your expenses :) Limit the number of cards that you have I don't really think building a business on credit is a way to start for most bootrapers. You are not really sure of the outcome and you might need to personally cover the loses. Hm. Still, interestin...

Entrepreneurship: efficient management by less words
2007-08-07 21:08:00
I'm not sure if this subject have been validated in theory but here is a thought I have on efficient management. I think that if you are able to use less words in your communication, it's a sign you have an efficient management style. We can think about it on several levels. Let's suppose you are in the elevator and you meet an old friend or a potential customer. Are you able to explain what your company does in that short amount of time? I bet that in most cases you are not, because one of the following: You explain features and not pains that are solved You do a lot of things and not sure on which to focus You are not sure what are your strengths But what if you could have a way to "sell" in 30 seconds? Use less words and say the important? Now, you have a new task for your...web developer. Chances are that you will use more than 3 phrases to say what needs to be done. That's usually a sign that: You're not saying what you should be saying You can't communicat...

Entrepreneurship resource: David V. Lorenzo's blog
2007-07-24 11:55:00
No need to say that it's really hard for Entrepreneur wanna be to find out relevant information about starting a business in only one place. That's why I'm naturally paying attention to any resource that cumulates knowledge from more areas, in an easy to read/understand format. This being said, I especially enjoyed David V. Lorenzo's blog because I found several categories relevant to my readers: Entrepreneurship - Start-up Entrepreneurship - Success Entrepreneurship - General Besides the categories, I stopped at several posts that are so familiar to the stuff I write. Like for example:"Why do Most Small Businesses Fail?". I agree with the reasons given in the article, but I would add one reason that actually explains the others: "Un-ability to adapt". Because all the other reasons come from the lack of adaptation to the market signals, requirements and challenges. I also really enjoyed the "The Three Things You Absolutely Must Know About Starting a Business". Wow, tha...

I think I've said this before, blogging really gives me the chance to get in contact with interesting people, making the World a much smaller place. This is how Steven Sesar approached me, saying he runs a blog on "Tales of an entrepreneur wannabe". Had a quick look and decided is a good addition to my "Knowledge resource category". I think he has one of the regular worries of any entrepreneur wanna be: waiting for an idea to happen: "I am a Los Angeles native who more than anything else has wanted to own and manage his own company, though still has yet to find the idea for which I am willing to commit my heart and soul." Now, USA is really the place where Web 2.0 is really happening, the place where most IT ideas are waiting to start. That's why I found his blog to be an interesting collection of stories, interviews and tales about new ventures in the post 2000 internet bust era. I especially enjoyed his story about starting to work with his friend on ideas about "an entrepren...

While I was at the 2007 Shareware Industry Conference in Denver, Colorado, I got the chance to shake hands with Bob Walsh , the author of "Clear Blogg ing : How People Blogging Are Changing the World and How You Can Join Them". While I was exchanging e-mails with Bob since some time now, it was really wonderful talking with a person that wrote a book about blogging. I mean you don't get to talk everyday with industry gurus... I also attended Bob's presentation on how and why blogs are good for small business just like mine. Bob says in one interview he gave to Avangate: "a good blog is easily the single best marketing activity they can invest their time in because by conversing on the net about the problems people have that their software addresses they demonstrate their expertise, build their online reputation, connect with other people interested in solving that problem (aka, customers) and play to their strengths." Maybe someday I will get to write my own book?
