Hitachi,Toshiba,Fujitsu To Form New HDD Company
2008-01-13 02:49:00
CNET News reports Hitachi , the Japanese conglomerate, is talking to Toshiba and Fujitsu about forming a new company dedicated to hard drives and storage systems. The new company would combine the limping hard drive divisions of Hitachi and Toshiba as well as some of the storage systems technology from Fujitsu. Each would own a third. The three-way deal is being proposed as an alternative to a private equity buyout. Hitachi has been in discussions with equity firm Silver Lake and others about spinning off its money-losing hard drive group, according to sources and news reports. Those talks, however, have not gone smoothly, sources familiar with the discussions said. If a deal occurs, it will likely occur by April 1, the beginning of the new business year in Japan. In December, Hitachi said that it wants to improve its hard drive business, but has not decided to sell it. It has not formally commented since. Toshiba and Fujitsu have yet to return requests for comment.

ATI Radeon HD 3670 aka RV635 Reviewed
2008-01-11 04:19:00
Expreview published a preview of the ATI Radeon HD 3670 256MB aka RV635.Performance wise this card is not very impressive over Radeon HD 2600 XT.The test result shows RV635 have a limited performance improvement. In almost all test subjects the card only outperform HD 2600XT less than 10% present which could be due to driver itself. Two month after RV670?s debuting, AMD brings us RV635. RV635 is only a shrink version of RV630, AMD didn?t do many changes in its architecture, just adding DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4.1 and DisplayPort support. So RV635, or HD 3670 is only a half gen evolution of HD 2600XT.From the roadmap of AMD, we can see HD 3600 family will take the place of HD 2600 series. The price will be about 100USD. User will ask how much is the improvement? Actually not much. The average improvement is about 3%. Let?s hope it is just a another Catalyst issue, and AMD will rise the actual performance of HD 3600 series by releasing a new version of Catalyst in the near future.Bel...
Expect More Surprises From Intel On 45nm Based CPU
2008-01-10 18:17:00
By the end of this quarter Intel should have over 30 processors built on the 45nm process released but the Silverthorne-maker is not stopping there. More 45nm goodies are now rumored to be arriving as soon as Q2 with the plan being to offer cheaper 45nm parts to better compete against AMD which already has the bulk of its offer priced at $200 and below. The new arrivals will be named Core 2 Duo E7000 series and will only be Wolfdale s with lower specs compared to the soon to be introduced E8000s. The E7000 CPUs will feature a 1066 MHz FSB (front side bus) and 'only' 3 MB of L2 cache but the rest of them will be identical to the new Wolfdales. The CPU series will debut with the release of the E7200, a dual-core processor with a TDP of 65W, clocked at 2.53 GHz and priced at $133. More E7000s are expected in Q3 and Q4 but the details are blurry at best. But it's enough to worry AMD and its forthcoming K10 dual and even tri-core CPUs. Source

NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT Benchmarked
2008-01-10 17:59:00
Expreview has published some 3D benchmarks of the NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce 9600 GT card. The site published a photo of a system with a GeForce 9600 GT 512MB graphics card. The card features a 650MHz core, 1625MHz shaders and 1800MHz memory. The below results were found on system having QX9650 (333MHz x 9) CPU, Asus Maximus Formula ROG X38 DDR3 motherboard and Geil 1GBX2 DDR2 800MHz 4-4-4-10-1T memory. They used Windows Vista Ultimate and NVIDIA ForceWare 169.25WHQL drivers. The performance of this GeForce 9600 GT is quite impressive to replace the existing GeForce 8600 GT cards but can't beat the the high-end cards.Inspite of that the result is pretty attractive and would give Radeon HD 3850/3670 a run for its money.

ASUS Unveils Two New Variants of 8800 GS Card
2008-01-10 17:53:00
Asus has announced two versions of the 8800GS, one that works at what we think should be the reference clock for 8800GS and the other is going to be a TOP edition version, of course factory overclocked. The first one, branded EN8800 GS/HDTP/348M, works at 550MHz for the GPU and 1.6GHz for 384MB of GDDR3 memory. This card's shader clock is 1375MHz. The second one, which is far more interesting, works at 600MHz for the core and 1.8GHz for 384MB of GDDR3 memory. Its shader clock is 1700MHz which is way higher than 1375MHz on the non-overclocked version. Both of these cards use a 192-bit memory interface. Source

The 1.1 patch includes 31 fixes, updates, and tweaks, and Crytek says it mainly addresses performance issues. Indeed, the lengthy change log for the patch lists fixes for a couple of memory leaks related to antialiasing and DirectX 10 graphics, not to mention optimizations for antialiasing and motion blur. Also listed in the change log are fixes for various bugs, crash-inducing hiccups, and several tweaks to multiplayer balance. MP tweaks include reduced rocket splash damage against infantry in the game's Power Struggle multiplayer mode, slower rockets, rocket hit detection tweaks, and a reduced radius for grenade explosions. CES 2008:After NVIDIA G100,Possibly GT200 Is The Next Gen Card
2008-01-10 02:17:00
The first time we heard about a product from Nvidia called G100 was almost a year ago. This should be one of the codenames for the next generation Nvidia card, but it might not be the only one.D8E is Geforce 9800GX2, and that is already a done deal, but after that comes a new high-end card. We know that this product is expected in the middle of this year and that Nvidia is working on it. The new codename is GT200 and we know that Dan Vivoli likes GT stuff, so we wouldn't be surprised that he came up with the name. We can also tell you that this is one big chip, but no real surprises there. Source

CES 2008:Intel To Launch P45,G45 Chipsets In Q2'08
2008-01-09 16:10:00
With the delay of the X48 chipset and the decision to delay some of its desktop CPU due to the weak performance of AMD's Phenom range, it looks like Intel might be planning to launch these CPUs alongside the P45 and G45 chipsets sometime in April or May this year, but it might be sooner rather than later. The biggest advantage we're seeing with the P45 chipset over the current P35 chipset is the fact that it supports dual x8 PCIe slots; as with the P35 you're limited to a x16 and a x4 solution if you want to run CrossFire. The G45 is an interesting beast, as it has an upgraded graphics engine with DX10 support, full HD video decoding and built-in support for HDMI with HDCP. There is, of course, the cut down G43 model as well, and we've even heard rumors of a simpler model than this, but it hasn't been verified as yet.Our current bet is on an April launch date, as by the end of the year, we're looking at new sockets, processors and chipsets all together and Intel wants some time...

CES 2008:DirectX 11 To Roll Out In Early 2009
2008-01-09 16:06:00
Fudzilla found out that Microsoft plans to finish up Direct X 11 in late 2008 or early 2009. This means that it will move rather quickly from DirectX 10 and 10.1, but it might take some time for hardware to go the same way.We still don?t know many things about the new API, but at least we have the rough plan that it is coming. It is clear that 2009 will be the year or DirectX 11, and the way the market works we should see some good DirectX 11 games by 2010.Seems like an eternity now, but as you might know, tempus fugit.

First iPhone Trojan Horse Reported
2008-01-09 02:54:00
Seen more as a prank than an actual threat, a Trojan horse for the Apple iPhone, first reported on Saturday, has already come and gone reports CNET News. Still, users should be on the look out for a package called "iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep," described as something you need to install before updating to the new 1.1.3 firmware. Billed as an "important system update," the code does little more than cause annoyance. According to various sources, once the Trojan is installed it simply displays the word "shoes." However, the Trojan also overwrites several legitimate applications, including Erica's Utilities, Launcher, Doom, and OpenSSH, meaning that if you uninstall the Trojan, you will need to reinstall these applications later. This appears to be a consequence of poor programming. The risk to iPhone users is now considered negligible since the host sites have all been taken down. As antivirus vendor F-Secure concluded in its blog, "This time it was an 11-year-old kid playing with XML...

CES 2008:No HD DVD Capability For XBOX 360
2008-01-09 02:44:00
As we have been guessing that XBOX 360 would have inbuilt HD DVD capabilities but Microsoft did not unveil any such information at CES, and has no plans to do so in the future, according to an executive in Microsoft's entertainment business."Absolutely not," said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of global marketing for interactive entertainment at Microsoft, when asked Monday if an HD DVD Xbox was in the works.Microsoft has been pushing HD DVD over Blu-ray as the format for high-definition video, but HD DVD suffered a significant setback last week when Warner Bros. said it would drop support for the format in favor of Blu-ray. Monday during an interview at CES in Las Vegas, Bell said Microsoft is taking a more agnostic view on how to serve up HD video. He said that it's up to consumers to make a choice between the two formats, not vendors. "We'll let the market decide how they're most interested in consuming entertainment," he said.Source

American magazine EGM reports that Call of Duty 5 is heavily under development, and the setting should once again be WWII.EGM guys made that conclusion after finding out that the game is being developed by a new software team. Instead of Infinity Ward, this time the software team behind the game will be Treyarch, the team that worked on CoD 3 XboX 360 version, and those guys just love WWII. Whether these rumors are true or not, we'll find out in the following weeks. Still, if the 5th sequel lives up to its predecessors, we won't mind blasting more Nazis.

Wikia Launches Its First Open Source Search Engine
2008-01-08 03:00:00
Wikipedia's founder Jimma Wales today unveiled an alpha version Wikia, this project is a new opensource search engine. Wikia is working to develop and popularize a freely licensed (open source) search engine. What you see here is our first alpha release. We are aware that the quality of the search results is low...--According to Wikia.Wikia's search engine concept is that of trusted user feedback from a community of users acting together in an open, transparent, public way. Of course, before we start, we have no user feedback data. So the results are pretty bad. But we expect them to improve rapidly in coming weeks, so please bookmark the site and return often. Right now, the most important thing you can do is help with the "miniarticles" that appear at the top of popular search terms. You can try it out here.Source
