It's easy for criminals to eavesdrop voip phone calls

Experts showed with a special program how easy it is for criminals to eavesdrop VoIP-based phone calls. With a software e.g. SIPtap multiple VoIP call streams are monitored, and recording for remote inspection. Criminal would only need be to infect a PC inside a network with a Trojan including these functions. The program can track voip calls by caller and by recipient, and even by date. With such a program organised crime could steal confidential data from governments, companies, and even the police. "We are in the early days of VoIP, but there is a knowledge gap," said VoIP consultat Cox, complaining the naivety about VoIP's inherent security weaknesses. "Companies using VoIP internally think they are protected." "The threat is that an attacker engineers a Trojan and has it sit there passively [on a network], recording calls from anywhere on the Internet," says Cox. His advice was simple. In what could possibly be a longterm blow to MagicJack, i2Telecom looks like they are on their way to winning a few patents on their VoiceStick technology. When I spoke with Magic Jack's folks a few weeks ago I raised the similarity to i2Telecom's USB implementation, but they seemed to be unmoved by the assertion. I'm wondering if their own patent attorneys are reading the news now to see what may or may not apply. While the i2Telecom patent has yet to be finalized the notice they received has to be warming to their hearts (and wallets.) On the subject of patents, a lot of people are wondering why I haven't weighed in on the Vonage fiasco caused by yet another defeat in court, this time to Sprint. I learned a long time ago not to speak ill of the dead. Assuming Vonage makes seven dollars a month on an average customer out of the $24.95 a month they charge that means almost 10 million customer months of profits are needed to cover the fine. Its only fitting that in the land of wireless phones and mobile technology, San Diego, the folks at Truphone came to play. And play they did at DEMO showing of a range of new devices that their mobile VoIP technology will be working on in  the future, for that is the essence of DEMO. The big news though has to be the deployment of VoIP on the Apple iPhone, an industry first, as Truphone has figured out how to load in the necessary SIP stack. Close to six megs down, and over 1.5 megs up...but the key is less than 15% latency for the round trip to the Speakeasy test site in Los Angeles found via speedtest.net Remember...all broadband is not created equal.
