Yahoo Lets Mac Users Down
2007-09-08 22:25:00
Stowe Boyd at /Message posts on the new Yahoo Messenger 3.0 beta 2 for the Mac. His lament. Still no voice. Basically its time for my friends at Yahoo, Skippy and the Rock Star, otherwise known as Messrs. Garlinghouse and Bonforte to stop thinking the bloggers are a silent minion like the Siamese public in the King and I. I mean, it has been two years since Yahoo bought Dialpad for a princely sum as part of their effort to catch up with the Skypes. That was Garlinghouse's doing. Shortly afterwards he realigned the product side, wooing away Gizmo Project developer Jeff Bonforte to build him a voice business. But other than a big launch on the Windows XP platform in 2005 there has been no real effort by anyone to move in big way publicly with Voice at Yahoo. And when you look at Stowe's post you can see that there really hasn't been any forward progress on integrating voice across the Yahoo platform or even making it Cross OS platform. Garlinghouse has become a writer o...

MIG 33 Launches New Web Site
2007-09-08 15:48:00
Social networking MIG33 has quietly launched an updated version of their beta site. Using a WAP based client on a mobile handset, Mig 33 sets out to bring a web like experience to the mobile phone. While they are also offering cheap long distance, I don't see this as a Truphone or even a Mobivox competitor. Instead I see this more of a compliment to the MySpace crowds way of being in-touch.

Office 2.0 Great Show-But Where's The Talking?
2007-09-08 01:21:00
I'm totally impressed by the Office 2.0 conference and the quality of presenters, the understanding of the concept of what the 2.0, cloud based collaboration will bring to business in the near term. With companies like BEA and Intuit showing their wares, and with companies like IBM, Oracle and CSC in the audience, you have to realize that the big money is looking at the space both to learn, and to likely avoid trial and error. One of the interesting apps I saw was TimeBridge, a service that makes appointments easier to schedule, but as good as it was, a friend of a friend enlightened me about his new startup and I felt like TimeBridge was last years calendar compared to what's coming next. Another neat app was Zoho. While they are playing in a crowded space bridge by two elephants, Google and Microsoft, their you can use your Office docs and import and export approach resonated well with me. There were also a lot, and I mean a lot of "collaboration" platforms, a...

FaceBook Users Now Have A New Way To Hook Up---the iotum Way
2007-09-05 17:29:00
<p>As I intimated last week, iotum has a new trick and its aimed smack dab at the Facebook crowd.</p> <p>Multiple bloggers have been on the case while I spent the day yesterday repairing a self inflicted wound on my Mac caused by MonoLingual and my own actions after Ken Rutkowski did the same thing on his. </p> <p><a href="http://www.downloadsquad.com/2 007/09/04/iotum-brings-conferencing-to-fa cebook/">Ted Wallingford</a>, <a href="http://skypejournal.com/blog/2 007/09/conference_calls_amongst_your.html ">Jim Courtney</a> and <a href="http://blogsearch.google.com/b logsearch?hl=en&amp;um=1&amp;tab= wb&amp;q=iotum+facebook&amp;ie=UT F-8&amp;scoring=d">a whole host of others</a> jam on what the iotum app means.</p> <p>This is a 2.0 mashup and <a href="http://mashable.com/2007/09/04 /iotum-facebook/">Mashable goes into great</a> detail on this a...

Listen In, Insert Ads, Deliver Free VoIP or Cellular
2007-09-05 00:29:00
<p>Today I've had two different conversations with people who are talking about what they have heard in the way of advertising supported telephony.</p> <p>The first is a <a href="http://www.thepudding.com/&quo t;>company</a> that wants to use a speech recognition engine and then serve you ads based on what you discussed. To me this has zero merit unless you never want to pay for anything. But advertising to the free its me crowd is not a real money maker in my book.</p> <p>The second unnamed company that has that wants to insert commercials in the pause between when you dial and press send on your mobile phone and the call hits the receiving party's switch and the phone rings. That has some merit.</p> <p>The idea of ad supported mobile phones has been tried years ago in Italy. It bombed. I think though there is a market for that, but ads based on the context of my conversations...well that's just a bit too much...

Fring Now Auto Roams
2007-09-04 09:42:00
<p>Fring has been making lots of improvements lately to their all in one IM/VoIP client that works on Nokia N series handsets.</p> <p>Now they've made it so that the service will work <a href="http://www.newswiretoday.com/n ews/23024/">auto roam between both on WiFi and 3G</a>. </p> <p>I've asked if this means 3G in the USA because that means it will have to be on AT&amp;T. T-Mobile doesn't have that option here. On the other hand in the UK with the pound a day Web and Walk option you could have a field day with unlimited calls to people on Skype...</p>

Is SAMSUNG Becoming A Global Business Telco?
2007-09-03 15:46:00
<p>I wrote in the news and notes column about a new Samsung monitor.</p> <p> <blockquote>A new series of Samsung monitors have Voice and Video capabilities embedded in. What's interesting is<a href="http://www.aving.net/usa/news/ default.asp?mode=read&amp;c_num=57069 &amp;C_Code=02&amp;mn_name=news&q uot;> Samsung appears to have developed their own applications</a> as well as making it possible for the monitor to work with third party software also.</p></blockquote></p& gt; <p>With Samsung also supplying DSL and ADSL2+ technology I started to wonder if they are also making the equipment "smart" all the way through. If so, they have all the makings of entering the telecommunications game a different way.</p> <p>Figure it out..</p> <p>1) Retailers like BestBuy, Circuit City and Frys all sell their hardware</p> <p>2) Carriers buy their DSL technology</p> <p...

Muni WiFi-The Wrong Place at the Wrong Time
2007-09-02 19:33:00
<p>I'm a fan of the idea of public WiFi. That's WiFi that is outdoors and lets the locals and visitors take their Internet and use it away from home or work, but I have to say that the Muni Players and the advisors really blew it this time, especially the Earthlink folks.</p> <p>First you have to look at the types of Internet users there are:</p> <p>Heavy Users-The always online, need big pipe crowd. These folks already have a business grade Cable Modem, ADSL2+ or business grade DSL or a T1.</p> <p>Medium Users-Need to connect daily, don't live online but need to be online at least twice to five times a day and require more that just email and web browsers. For this crowd DSL, Cable Modem or a wireless EVDO or 3G card works fine.</p> <p>Light Users-they need to check email, book a flight, check a box score, or do some light surfing. For them dial up or even 256k DSL is fine.</p> <p>Then there are two ot...

<p><a href="http://www.voip-weblog.com/502 26711/phonegnome_outage_nearly_averted.ph p">David Beckemeyer could have thrown in the towel</a>. He didn't.</p> <p>Just two days or so ago he IM'd me to say that one of the data centers he was using for Phonegnome was pulling the plug and turning the lights out IN TWO DAYS. David to his credit found another data center, and within a day, it was running. He's busy making sure all things are done right.</p> <p>Much to my dismay some people scolded him for being offline for all of 15 minutes. GEEZ....Here's little PhoneGnome out for all of 15 minutes and customers are losing it...Get a life. David did more things right in one day, and with much less in the way of resources or staff than Skype or RIM did in more time when they had outages.</p> <p>David is a pioneer in many ways and he should be thanked. </p>

How To Use Skype Internet-Telephony As Marketing Tool
2007-08-23 16:34:00
Nowadays it is comfortable to introduce your product with Skype IP-telephony definitely worldwide. With Skype IP-telephony it is comfortable to bring your business definitely to the global market. IP-Telephony is no longer the jealously protected secret of computer freaks it was before. Skype actually changed how we communicate. Traditional telecommunications companies like AT+T pressed the panic button and forced to launch their own IP-telephony service. At the beginning Skype was launched as an IM PC tool with voice as an additional feature. Within a very short time Skype became synonymous with making phone calls over the Internet . Like other voip providers Skype does not rely on a centralized network to route the calls. Thus Skype, unlike other Voip providers like Vonage and Lingo, can gain larger without paying out anything extra for hardware based on a centralized network, since its network seriously is made of thousands of PCs connected to each other owned by people like you...

Skype Outage caused by Windows Update
2007-08-20 15:12:00
I'm never one to say I told you so, but it appears I was right about Windows Update (Patch Tuesday) causing the massive Skype outage. Many users were skeptical of this theory, as seen in the comments of my blog post. This from Skype Heartbeat: On Thursday, 16th August 2007, the Skype peer-to-peer network became unstable and suffered a critical disruption. The disruption was triggered by a massive restart of our users’ computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine set of patches through Windows Update . The high number of restarts affected Skype’s network resources. This caused a flood of log-in requests, which, combined with the lack of peer-to-peer network resources, prompted a chain reaction that had a critical impact. Normally Skype’s peer-to-peer network has an inbuilt ability to self-heal, however, this event revealed a previously unseen software bug within the network resource allocation algorithm which ...

Microsoft Licenses RT Audio Codec and launches new QoS Monitoring Tool
2007-08-20 07:00:00
I believe I was the first to break the story about Microsoft 's RT codecs called RT Audio and RT Video. At the very least, I was the first to stress the importance of Microsoft offering two forward error correction codecs when I wrote "Microsoft's Secret Codec Weapon? One fact that hasn't gotten any attention from the mainstream media (& tech media) coverage of OCS 2007 is the VoIP and video codec Microsoft is using. During my conversation with Microsoft they kept talking about how Office Communicator's VoIP works well not only in broadband environments, but also in limited bandwidth narrowband environments, i.e. dial-up -- and even on Windows Mobile 5 devices." In the article I explained how Microsoft stressed how their codec works well even with high packet loss due to Forward Error Correction (FEC) and other algorithms. I inquired whose codec they were using and they said that they developed it themselves. I was surprised since there are at least two well-known a...

EMC Smarts VoIP Performance Manager & Reporter
2007-08-20 07:00:00
Today, EMC launched a comprehensive solution for managing your VoIP infrastructure, with EMC Smarts VoIP Performance Manager and EMC Smarts VoIP Performance Reporter . The goals of these two software solutions are to maximize the availability and performance of business-critical VoIP services through comprehensive monitoring, alerting, diagnosis and reporting. I spoke with EMC last week to learn more about their latest foray into the VoIP space. My first comment to EMC was that I was unaware EMC was in VoIP and I just thought of them as a storage company. They acquired Smarts in 2004 for $260 million which was a leading real-time network systems management software company. The Smarts technology is extended to the new Smarts VoIP Performance Manager and Performance Reporter. EMC explained how their new VoIP solution monitors the end-to-end performance and availability of both the VoIP telephony and supporting network infrastructures. These VoIP performance management and reporting p...

trixbox Training
2007-08-19 22:35:00
trixbox is a popular Asterisk-based IP-PBX solution. Although trixbox is meant to be easy to install via a bootable CD, there is still a lot to know about configuring and optimizing trixbox for the most optimal experience. Whether it's configuring hunt groups, or configuring SIP settings for IP trunks you might want some help from the experts. That's why TMC is hosting trixbox training & certification at Internet Telephony Conference & Expo, which is only 10 days away. Even though I've been playing with Asterisk-based solutions for years, I may check out the training sessions just to brush up on my skills. In fact, the trixbox training & certification sessions are taught by none other than Kerry Garrison, trixbox Community Director, with support from Andrew Gillis, the trixbox Founder, as well as the trixbox Support team. The training is broken down into two types: Fonality trixbox Open Communications Certification (FtOCC) Administrator and FtOCC Technician. FtOCC Adm...

Saturday Update on Skype Outage
2007-08-18 19:53:00
Just received this email from Skype PR representative. Thought I'd share an excerpt of it. The gist is that Skype is now back to normal and on Monday they will finally provide a more detailed explanation. I'm kind of rooting for the tin hats'  theory about the CIA and FBI bringing down the Skype network. Anyway, here's the Skype PR email: Good Morning, I'm pleased to share the most recent information on the Skype outage with you: "Take a deep breath. Skype is back to normal." "On Monday, we’ll provide a more detailed explanation of what happened. Until then, we’d like to apologize and thank you. Precisely in that order." "We know how difficult and frustrating the past two days have been. And still, your good wishes kept flowing in. Thank you for the amazing patience, trust and support!" Skype released that statement a little after 11 AM GMT this morning (8/18/07). Please expect information to arrive on Monday that more clearly an...
