MS Dev Software:Free for students
2008-02-26 00:00:00
Microsoft? seems to be in a giving mood this year as they’re all set to launch a project that allows colllege and university students to get copies (legit) of their developer software FREE. Yep you read that right. FREE. The program is called Microsoft DreamSpark and the suite to be given away includes Visual Studio Professional Edition, XNA Game Studio, Expression Studio, SQL Server and Windows Server. As a developer and a student, the only means of getting such packages were to either pay for them in full (which is hard, I’m a student after all) or acquire them from less legal means (P2P, bangketa shops, etc). Now to rid future developers of that problem, Microsoft is giving away these software for free. I could already imagine the amount of headaches I could’ve avoided had this program been in the works a few years back already. For now though, only students from Belgium, China, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S. ...

Addicting Eyeballs: Enter Patapon
2008-02-21 00:00:00
After seeing one of the few Patapon download links available, I decided to download it, pop it on my PSP and run a 5 minute trial. To sum up the experience, Patapon is addicting. It was I loved it so much I think it deserves a review.  A big thanks to the provider of the Patapon download link though (you can see it at the bottom ^^). Despite the really crappy name and the unassuming and weird appearance of your army, Patapon (means trashy in our native language) is a simple yet enjoyable (sometimes addicting) game that casual gamers would love. Instead of pushing buttons to score high points like most Rhythm games, you get to move your Patapon Army with it.  You start from basic Forward and Attack commands to more complex ones as the game progresses.  Of course, the button presses required gets more complex too. ~Pata Pata Pata Pon~A full hour into the game after the Patapon download and I’m already singing the song >_< Later into the game, you also get access to more ...

Online Etiquette 101 - Forums
2008-02-21 00:00:00
Online services have turned from a convenience and past time to a part of life. E-mail, forum posts, blog posts, VoIP, IM (instant messaging) have become the norm in terms of communications for the tech savvy and the net-aholics to not only keep in touch with friends and family but also to be updated in the latest trends and happenings. Just like in our everyday life, to enjoy your experience in any online network as well as have a constructive exchange of communication, you need to observe some rules of etiquette. Simple rules like paying due respect to other user’s point of views with some level of maturity and consideration are very important. Netiquette (Internet ettiquette), is on it’s own unique to the online community you are participating in, be it a forum, a blog, a newsgroup or even just an IRC channel. Keeping in touch with our Filipino root’s and culture, it wouldn’t hurt and others certainly wouldn’t mind if you kept your manner...

Is this the PSP Phone?
2008-02-21 00:00:00
Rumors about a PSP-style phone have been floating around since last year, Sony Entertainment has been quite tight-lipped about it. They didn’t even say anything on January’s Consumer Electronics Show. In the past weeks though there’s been quite a buzz about like a mention from Sony magazine (image below). Now that little piece didn’t say anything really detailed, just a suggestion that “it could be in the shops as early as February.” Now that we’re halfway through the love month though, that seems unlikely, but hey, PlayStation fans like me can still keep our on right? For now the latest fuel to the rumor comes from this supposed magazine scan, depicting the supposed device. After seeing quite a few mock ups though, I’m getting skeptical about the PSP Phone hitting shelves this quarter of the month but I certainly wouldn’t mind to have this baby in my pocket. For Custom Firmware Users, Dark Alex has released the latest patc...
Gundam 00 - Episode 17 and 18
2008-02-13 00:00:00
Episode 17 and 18 gives the slowing pace of the series a much need boost. So much that it’s moved even me =( What’s new? Well quite a lot, but for those waiting for Code Geass, the anime that has Gundam 00’s time slot, we get a short preview (end of episode 18) confirming that the second series is due out for April 5. Can’t wait for that. Also, last February 6, the full version of the new opening song Ash Like Snow by Brilliant Green hit the stores so a copy is already available at your favorite Jpop or Anime Soundtrack source. Here’s the video if you’re interested. It’s quite a catchy song IMO. Episode 17 Celestial Being and the Trinity siblings (yes, they’re blood-related) meet face to face for the first time and in the short exchange, we get to see their characteristics. Nena is Obsessive, Compulsive. She’s cutesy but quite heartless (as you’ll find out later). She seems to have a thing for Setsuna to the dism...

Free WP-Theme: Black Bead
2008-02-11 00:00:00
Ok.. I’m late.. the theme should’ve been up yesterday but the latest episode of Gundam 00 upset me (will post about it probably monday, when the subs are out) so I decided to stall the release. Anyways, to anyone interested.. it’s a free theme! Black Bead is a semi-magazine style Wordpress theme created for wordy yet content-filled site (just like Pinoy Tech Guy). I used the term “semi-magazine” since the full magazine style is only seen on single posts while other pages use a thumbnail to save space and bandwidth. Since I got the idea to implement the magazine style of Block Magazine, my current theme, it works very much the same. Black Bead uses two custom fields: Thumb and LargeThumb (note that they are case sensitive). The values of Thumb and ThumbLarge needs to be the http location of the images attached to each post. Thumb is for the small image (64×64 pixels) and ThumbLarge is for the featured, larger image (since the max width is 640 pi...

My first WP-Theme: Another project of a Sleepless Night
2008-02-10 00:00:00
CSS for Dummies was a lot of help for this one as well as 2 bags of Roti Mum Coffee Buns. If you want to see how’s the progress on this one, you can stay tuned here or head to my dummy wordpress installation (EDIT: am now testing the theme so it’s live at PTG). It’s about 85% done with minor tweaks necessary to make it workable. A disclaimer though, I’m a programmer so I’m not really very good at web aesthetics so forgive me if my work isn’t as polished as that of the other theme-makers. Can’t be everything right? The concept is not purely original but I put the theme together to fit what I needed for Pinoy Tech Guy. A simple semi-magazine style theme with a Dom Tab (oh God I’m so in love with the Domtab right now). Since I’m already using the Block Magazine theme for Atma Xplorer, I can’t use it again so I set off to try and design my own. It took quite a while but I finally got Canti, the character you’re see...

Geeks and Valentines #2: Date ideas
2008-02-07 00:00:00
While most people would want to spend Valentines Day sitting on a couch watching TV or staring at their monitors playing MMO or chatting but that applies to singles. To people with a significant other, Valentine’s is another day that makes saying “I love you” special. I’ve compile some ideas so you can go and plan your date early on to avoid crowds or place your reservations A day in the Park It’s old fashioned but many people still enjoy going to amusement/theme parks even on a busy valentines Day, so much that they end up filling these places to the rafters. You might not enjoy being around several thousand people and waiting in line for 30 mins for a single ride but hey, it’s the memories that count. Frequent park visitors will mention Enchanted Kingdom or Star City as these have been around for quite awhile now. Luckily theres 2 more choices for you. One is Global Fun Carnival (beside MoA) and the latest one is Ocean Park Manila (behind...

Custom Firmware 3.90 M33 brings VoIP
2008-02-04 00:00:00
Hmm.. while my net connection was out (both of them, Globe and PLDT) Dark Alex (or team M33) has released the latest version of PSP’s firmware. What I like about the new firmware? Mm… Skype ^^ It’s basically VoIP on the go. On that note, you might be interested on some predictions on how VoIP is going to change how we know gaming. Now I’ll trade shelf my current Phillips headphones and by a for-Skype one or get one of those cheap heatsets. Requirements: PSP Phat or PSP Slim with 3.52 M33-4 or higher. PSP battery that’s at least 78% full The 3.90 M33 | Mirror1 | Mirror 2 installation file Set the kernel to 3.80: do this by (hard) booting your psp while holding the R button. Go to Configuration, look for the kernel configuration and set it to 3.52 If you want to install the 1.50 kernel on your PSP Phat you can download the 3.90 version from any of these sites QJ-Net or PSP-Hacks Now thanks to the M33 team’s for...

Turn your PSP to a work of art
2008-02-01 00:00:00
I’ve been looking for a customizable (mod-able, in my case cutable) acrylic casing for my PSP Slim for quite awhile now. There’s still not a lot of options in the market but if you know where to look you’d get 4 nice options: A capdase soft jacket A fliptop crystal case A screen-only flip crystal case A bootlegged PlayGear Pocket (best option if you don’t want to shell out 800 bucks on a case you’ll be cutting) Now there’s very little you can do in terms of customization for the Capdase jacket and the full fliptop crystal case is just ugly (PSPs are equivalent to cars after all) so you’re left with the screen-only flip one and the PlayGear Pocket. Now what about art? Face it, after awhile staring at your pristine looking PSP can be boring sometimes. Sure you can spice it up with a custom firmware and themes on your XMB and a cool looking housing (expensive!) but then again if you carry your PSP in a case then you can’t flaunt it (...

Gundam 00 - Episode 15 and 16
2008-01-28 00:00:00
Gundam 00’s previous and latest episodes proved once and for all that to tell a great battle, you needed two episodes or more. This simple rule has been true for past serieses like Gundam SEED (and Destiny) and even Gundam Wing. I stopped halfway through creating a post for episode 15 due to 2 things. Like any Climatic Gundam Episode , you needed the next episode(/s) to get the full story I wanted to see more of the Thrones Turns out waiting for Episode 16 was well worth it. Why? It dispelled some of my notions on the existences of the Thrones and what role they’ll be playing with Celestial Being. Here’s the synopsis and some additional info for both episodes. Episode 15 As I’ve stated earlier episode 15 is Part 1 of one drawn out battle. In preparation for this all 3 powers dot the desert with a communication network (similar to what Sergei did on a much larger scale) and prepared to mobilize 832 mobile suits comprising 52 units to combat the Gun...

Paypal withdrawals to Philippine Banks
2008-01-26 00:00:00
Yes it’s finally here. Paypal finally opens it’s doors (fully) to the Philippines, banks and citizens alike. No more lost checks in the mail, no more application for specialized credit cards. Just fork over P250.00 for each transaction under P7,000.00 (above that is free) and you’ll get money from your Paypal Account transferred to your Philippine Bank Account in 5-7 working days. Easy right? Click the image for a larger version All you need are your bank?s (the one where you’ll transfer the money into) details which include Bank Name, Bank Code (9 digits), and Account Number. The question now that everyone’s asking is what in the world are the Bank Codes? Their obviously not the same as Swift Codes or Bank Identifier Codes that Money Bookers use since their just 8 characters as opposed to Paypal’s 9. hmm.. guess it’s a mystery till Paypal updates their site. I’ll update the post when I find more information. &cop...

Going to Disney? Don?t forget your DS
2008-01-26 00:00:00
Yep. Visitors to Disney (Land, world or the park is called) will soon be able to use their beloved portables as a tour guide in its park. How? You simply need the wireless device called the Disney Magic Connection system (scratchy details as of the moment but a few people have tried it) to roam around the park. You DS will not only serve as a digital guidebook, it can also display current wait times on rides as well as the best time for shortest lines at a certain ride or attraction. There’s even an expected function to track your favorite characters, so you don’t loose them in the crowd (Not that they’re THAT hard to miss. Big heads?? o.O). Lost? Don’t worry, your DS can point you to the nearest Information booth.   A big pat to Disney and Nintendo for upping the experience up a notch. What about PSP users? Don’t feel bad. There’s still the GPS unit for us. The GPS receiver is relatively small, weighing around 15 grams, and refre...
Geeks and Valentines #1: Gift ideas
2008-01-25 00:00:00
The big day is still a 26 days away and already people are stocking up on gifts like flowers, cards, chocolates even gadgets. And with good reason, anything branded valentines either disappear or rise exponentially in prices. Items such as these include but are not limited to: Valentines plush toys Valentines day cards Valentines chocolates - this includes everything from Hershey’s to Goya. Valentines day flowers - roses or tulips if you run out of roses which you most certainly will. Small bundles called Valentines memoirs Now, as a Geek, I usually buy before the rush and buy what I know my girlfriend will love. It saves me the hassle of coming up with excuses and the headache of thinking something up. Now, if you’re at a loss on what to give this valentines here’s a quick list. Note that Geeks will most probably love this list of gift ideas more than regular people. E-valentines message - This can be in the form of an e-card, an MMS message or even a vi...

Manage your time effectively
2008-01-25 00:00:00
Poor management of time will prevent even the smartest of people from reaching their full potential. You either end up doing very little or not at all and living an unproductive life is much worse than not living at all. All of us have the same amount of time so the challenge that face us is using this resource effectively. Here’s a few tips to help you get started: Set Goals Goals are not just for a sense of direction, they help you keep track of where you are, what you’ve done and what still needs to be done. Just remember SMART: Specific - Set very definite goals. It’s constrictive yes but it will prevent you from getting sidetracked from what you reall want to do. Measurable - When you’re doing something, you want to be able to track your progress. Goals you can’t measure are difficult to attain because you won’t know where you are. Attainable - Set goals with common sense in mind. Set goals that you have the attitudes, abilities, skills...

The Best Games you?ve never played
2008-01-25 00:00:00
With hundreds of new games each year, it’s easy to forget the classics. Sure new games may be top of the line in terms of graphics but what of the gameplay? Games are not just about amazing effects and realistic physics, there’s a plot, the gameplay, and even some uniqueness that sets it apart. Over the years, there’s really very few innovations done right in the gaming industry. Sure Crysis has the best FPS engine around but what does it offer that you can’t already find in older games? Sure the story is different but does it play differently too? Anyways, enough of the rant. Here’s a list of games that you’ve probably never played or even heard before, but should. Beyond Good & Evil On:Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube BG & E combines some of the best selling elements genres like action-adventure games and stealth-based one into one amazing package. The story takes place on Hillys, where a mix of human, aliens and others co-e...

PSP Guide: From OFW to 3.80 M33-5
2008-01-25 00:00:00
I saw considerable traffic from my 3.80 M33 is released post look for a way to convert from Sony’s official Firmware to the current one so I thought of making a guide for it. Okay I lied part of the title. I was supposed to start off with a How to on downgrading but so you don’t mess anything up, why don’t you just use the guide I followed. It’ll help you downgrade your PSP (Phat for Slims you need to use this guide) to 1.50 and allow you to install custom firmwares. Note 1: Make sure your PSP is charged to at least 78% or is connected via AC adaptor before you decide to change firmwares Note 2: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT reset, turn off, or interrupt your PSP while upgrading/installing firmwares otherwise you’ll end up bricking it. Note 3: If you have questions post them below. I’ll try my best to help you. Note 4: The guide was made from a collection of Readme’s from all the mentioned CFW dumbed down so even the most novice of PSP u...

News you just missed: Link Love #2
2008-01-25 00:00:00
I’m already out of school (pre-graduate) and looking for that one job to make it all worth it. I’ve found over 30+ jobs along that line and received replies from about 15 companies with requests for exam or interview (Mark’s referral has still to get through though). Now if only I wasn’t too picky. Four months ago, I would’ve been alright with any computer related job so long as it paid well. Now, I’m very picky about the job I’m going to take. Why? Well, there’s a lot of important considerations for me to take the job. At the top of that list is experience. I will never go with a high paying “starter job,” (such as call centers or a support group) because in the long run, the experience that I’ll be picking up there won’t do me any good. Sure it may get me a managerial or higher position but what have I learned from it? I’m not criticizing call center agents or people with similar jobs but am mere...

News you just missed: Link Love #1

Thank God and Geeks for inventing the RSS reader. Can you imagine if you had to read all those 50+ blogs in your bookmarks? Well for one, we’d all be stuck in front of your computers getting flooded with surges of new items and we’d never get anything done, there’d be no conflicts since we’re too busy reading and we’d all require glasses ^^. Now the premise of this so called News you just missed… is just that. News just you just missed. I’ll link (or at least try to) to the most interesting news on my RSS feeds (and God knows that’s a long list). This series will be out on Fridays or Saturdays so be sure to check it out. If you’ve seen the number on the title then you’d note that this will be a weekly thing. Hopefully it’s more successful than my other “ehem” gimmicks. Want to increase your readership? Techy stuff to Life, Games, and Computing
2008-01-25 00:00:00
I’ll confess, I started this blog with no plan whatsover on SEO, niche or even regular posting. To the earlier me is a way of making money. While it’s true, I found out that people out to make money are usually the guys who don’t so I tried to look the other way. Karlo of PinoyBlogero and I, had once a discussion during our Thermodynamics class on what we wanted to do online. We agreed that we both wanted to prioritize making a mark before monetizing. Considering PinoyBlogero’s exposure to on local newspaper, I’d say he’s already reach that mark. So now what of me and Atma Xplorer. Well let’s just say after all that has happened (good and bad), I’m proud to say I’m addicted to writing. Why did I say that? Soon after I’ve gotten a lot of free time I tried (yet utterly failed) to go back to things that I loved doing before: Gaming - it’s at the top because I love gaming. Did Gentoo just die?
2008-01-25 00:00:00
While no official body has yet to confirm or spread news about it, Daniel Robbins, creator of Gentoo Linux, confirmed that the Gentoo Foundation’s charter has been revoked for the next several weeks. In layman’s terms, as of this moment the Gentoo Foundation no longer exists. Apparently this happened because the people who are supposed to be in charge of keeping this alive have mostly resigned or are MIA. Aside from neglected online duties like publishing newletters, updating the site, etc, they didn’t file routine paperwork with the proper authorities, which puts the legal status of the Gentoo foundation in jeopardy. No one has explained why to the community, or said much of anything until Daniel stepped forward. What will happen to Gentoo now? Referring to the foundation, Daniel is offering to return to his post as president of the foundation (as posted on his blog) so things at the enterprise end will remain stable. On the distro end, even with the ...

Gundam 00 - Episode 14
2008-01-25 00:00:00
Gundam 00’s first episode of the year starts out with a bang. There’s a new intro (and outro) for the series and like all others before it, spoilers abound but before we get to that, let’s start with what’s revealed with the episode. Many forum-ers have predicted that the Celestial Being’s “base” is some sort of orbital platform. This was not far the truth, their actual dock is hidden within an Asteriod field near the HRL’s first Space Colony (reminder of how the Klein faction in Gundam SEED Destiny were able to construct the new Gundam models). Back on earth, all 3 powers (HRL, AEU, Union) are now aiming for the Gundams, not individually but as a big group. They’re still aiming to get one of these shiny units for themselves but overall, their respective military forces are moving for one big deployment. This is a list of anti-Gundam Units of each of the powers. HRL - Aside from Sergei Smirnov, theres mention of a Project G(i...

Scrapers are the worst type of visitors to your site. Why? They “scrape” everything, your posts, your images, even links which are likely at the bottom, and post it as their own. Here’s a prime example of a scraper. See the title on the page? It was sraped from my post over here. Now it’s not like I have a Million Dollars worth in my content but see, this is why this guy is in the feed. So how do you prevent things like this from happening? Let’s break it down to 2 parts: Hotlinking RSS Scraping Hotlinking is not only stealing content, it’s stealing bandwidth as well. It’s bad enough if your site has to deal with the Digg-effect on a regular basis but couple that with images on your server getting ripped then you’re on a one way ticket to exceeding your monthly bandwidth limit. This could mean as little as a few bucks added on your tab or getting your account suspended indefinitely. To prevent the horrors of hotlinking, her...

Custom Firmware 3.80 is released
2008-01-25 00:00:00
As you’ve noticed in some of my posts, I’m slowly shifting this blog to a gaming niche to make way for Pinoy Tech Guy. It wouldn’t make much sense to have 2 blogs on the same niche right so bear with me with the changes. Now on with the post. If you’re new to the PSP scene, then this is the first time you’ll hear the name Dark Alex. His M33 group releases the custom firmware that allows PSP users (both Phat and Slim) to enjoy freedom from UMDs and use Homebrew Apps. A few days ago, they released CFW (Custom Firmware ) 3.80 M33 that added Internet Radio to the PSP’s arsenal. Note that when you’re upgrading or downgrading firmwares, there is always a tiny risk of bricking your PSP. The risk increases when you don?t follow instructions so before you proceed a step, READ and RE-READ. What do I need? A PSP-1000 (Phat) or PSP-2000 (Slim) with a CFW of at least 3.52 M33-4 or higher. If you’re still on Official Firmware (OFW)and want ...

Enter Smorty, a service where you get paid to blog just by posting under subjects that your niche is already covering. Is this just another Get paid to X scam? Seriously no. Smorty serves as a middleman, connecting advertisers with bloggers, so the advertisers themselves pay bloggers to write opinionated posts with links back to the advertisers site and/or product. Think of it as a paid review or blog advertising If want to retain the title of Super-Affiliate, Smorty also gives you that option. For every ad campaign that an advertiser you have referred, you earn commission.
