PSP to a PSPhone
2008-01-12 00:00:00
Sony has confirmed what many of the PSP gurus have been expecting, that Skype is coming to the PSP Slim. Though there’s still no official word on what features it will contain, many speculate a full version of the program that runs all of Skype’s PC/Mac features will soon run on your PSP Slims turning it to a cellphone (so long as you’re still on a Wifi connection) Sounds enticing doesn’t it? I’ve been using Skype for quite sometime now (chat with friends and family) and mobile access is quite simply, a dream come true. Sony has set Skype for the PSP to be enabled via the next firmware update at the end of January. Once installed, you’ll see the Skype icon (as above) on your XMB. What can you do with Skype? Free Skype to Skype voice calls Contact management (a phonebook literally) SkypeOut? to call landlines and cellphones anywhere in the world (not Free) A SkypeIn? (Optional) number that allows you to receive calls on Skype from landlines an...
Sony bids goodbye to DRM
2008-01-12 00:00:00
It was inevitable that Sony BMG Music Entertainment turns its back on the shackles of digital music called DRM (Digital Rights Management). Everybody has been predicting that 2008 will the year and after a long wait, it’s finally here. All other major labels - Warner, EMI, Vivendi - have dropped DRM and with Sony now in that list, DRM is officially (finally) dead. DRM is copyright protection method that prevents illegal sharing of songs on P2P networks. But like all other anti-piracy campaigns, it annoyed customers more than it prevented theft. Declaring DRM is officially dead maybe a bit of a stretch since music DRM is still present for several other services but they represent a small minority. You can expect the first few of DRM-free tracks appearing at the during the first quarter 2008. Amazon’s DRM-free store is now at a good vantage point because offers variable pricing, as opposed to the iTunes store. On that line of thought, services tied with Social network ...

Are sidebars really useful?
2008-01-12 00:00:00
When it was first introduced as a feature of Windows? Vista, I was one of many who dismissed it as another marketing ploy to lure tech savvy individuals to the new OS. For the first few months, that initial outlook was right as most of the time, sidebars generally were just there to make your Vista desktop look a little more attractive. When a few innovative minds decided to try and created their own version of the sidebar, here’s the result: Current sidebar programs (both 3rd party and proprietary) are now so useful that you simply can’t do without them. For instance, on my Desktop Sidebar (as you can see in the pic above) I have: Sticky notes - a place to jot down ideas I forget them An RSS reader - now I don’t need to open Firefox to see what’s hot A Google searchbar - for those impromptu searches Quck launch icons - got to love them when you have many applications utorrent status - I usually download with torrents so this is a must to me Free Spac...
What to do when your PC dies
2008-01-12 00:00:00
It started as a glitch while playing a video file during the New Year’s celebration and like any computer junkie, I felt it was simply a codec error or something as minor. Two days later, January 2 to be exact, my computer crashed and never booted again. It’s the worst case scenario especially when you’re rushing to finish work like reports, programs etc. I’ve experienced a lot of PC deaths (some of natural causes and some by me.. don’t ask how) so it’s safe to say that I’m quite competent in the field and I thought of sharing that with everyone. When your computer dies, here’s what you do: First off don’t panic. Panicking is the worst thing you can do. Not only will you fail to see any hint that your computer is giving on what the problem is but you also risk doing more damage to your PC than what made it crash in the first place. Check what’s wrong. If you haven’t learned the basics of PC troubleshooting, I s...

Goodbye to 2007 and my pre-blogger self
2008-01-12 00:00:00
It’s been quite a year for me with tons of new experiences both online and offline. Though I didn’t make it to the roll of graduating (actually graduating, not just the graduate class) students, I was able to get 7.00 on all subjects necessary so unless I find work (one that fits my newly set standards), you can brand me as a NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training). What now? Throughout the few months that this blog existed, I’ve made so many experiments on SEO, that I actually think I screwed everything up. In the same thought that Mcbilly had in making his Top 10 Shameless Blogging Mistakes, I present to you my list of 7 blogging sins and what to do about them. 1. What niche am I? What indeed. I’ve been trying to focus Atma Xplorer on a more general view of technology to encompass both software, hardware AND gadgets all around it but in the end, it’s too broad a spectrum that I’m almost always lost in a decision whether I ...

Guide to Programming Series: Week 4
2008-01-12 00:00:00
After a bit of delay here’s the last of the Guide to Programming Series : The Life Cycle of a Typical Program. Why the delay? A lot of personal stuff (like my impromptu trip ^^) but no worries. I’m back, I’m better and I’m focused. Now, on with the series: Programs rarely go from the drawing board straight to the market. We usually get to avail of them at the -nth incarnation. Why? This is because Programs ‘evolve,’ over the course of their development and rarely does a program go from code to product without carrying bugs in them. These computer bugs are errors, flaws, mistakes, etc within a computer program, either in the code or how the program works in general, preventing it from behaving as intended. The usual cause of bugs is human error. Imagine trying to simulate thousands if not millions of lines of code and you get the general idea but I’ll go on into that later. In perspective, development of a program typically goes as foll...

Myself Yourself - Series Review
2008-01-12 00:00:00
The series finally wraps with one of the better endings that harems animes could ever have. Best series of the year? Nah but it’s a definite must watch. Like Honey and Clover titles like this are a rarity. Story At this point, you’ll probably note the series is more than just an anime about friendship. A much more closer description would be reality-based anime. It’s a touching and down to earth that everyone (at least who’s mature enough to think that suicide isn’t cool) should see. Graphics: Owing the anime’s origin to a visual novel almost ensures the quality of the artwork of the series. Character design was done by Mutsumi Sasaki, who also responsible for the characters of Memories Off, Happy Lesson, and Futakoi. Said designs ranges from bishoujo (Nanaka) to cutesy (Hinako). Animation was smooth and there’s very little complaint on the overall look of the show. Sounds: There’s only a few memorable tracks for the series an...

If you haven’t been visiting your social media site because of the holidays then you’ve probably haven’t heard of David’s story. While on vacation (like most of us now), his site and ultimately his domain name had been taken over by someone going by the name ‘Peyam.’ After contacting GoDaddy and ICDSoft (his site’s host and domain registrar) he soon found out that because all transactions were final, there was little that he could do. David even tried contacting the Peyam who offered (taunted) him with $650 initially for everything. The price dropped to $250 but David remains adamant that he will not pay anything up. There’s currently no development on the story but I doubt Peyam would return the domain nor would David bend over to the demands. How did the hack happen? There are a lot of possible ways that the hack could’ve happened: A XSS (Cross-Site Scripting) exploit which allow code injection by malicious web users into ...

Back from Japan
2007-12-26 00:00:00
After some issues with airport immigration, they thought I was someone else and ID’ed me six times, I’m back in front of my computer screen. No one’s here as expected, everyone in my family is in the province to celebrate so it’s awfully quiet and it’ll be that way for quite awhile. Ok, enough about ranting. For what it’s worth, I loved the trip. I felt I really needed some time out and although I shelled out more cash than I really wanted, I can’t help but feel it was worth every peso. The trip is a very personal one so it was more of a communal thing rather than a sightseeing trip. No actual pics aside from the ones taken with my friend’s camera-attachment for his PSP so sorry about that Mark. Here’s the highlights of my trip: Went to Nipponbashi look for anime stuff. I was able to buy a Destroy model kit for my collection and tried to look for a store that carries legwarmers which I wanted to give to a friend (it’...

Merry Xmas from Osaka
2007-12-26 00:00:00
Aside from the expensive ($1K+!?!) round trip ticket, the trip was fairly routine. I wanted to go to Akihabara but seeing that the fare was already taken from my own wallet, I doubt I’d survive my first hour there. Why? Akihabara is considered Otaku heaven with the best stores if you’re searching for anime merchandise. Software, manga, anime titles and even adult items (no I won’t go into detail), you name it, it’s there. Since Akihabara is simply out of the question, we went for the next best thing: Nipponbashi in Osaka . There was only one store that I really wanted to see there and the picture below should make clear. When I saw it, I almost broke into tears. Aptly named Osaka Gundams, the store carries everything that a Gundam lover would want. I personally can’t describe the feeling after setting foot in the building but to put it simply, I was like a child released into a giant sandbox. ^^ I saw many Gundam kits that I really wish to take ho...

Off to Japan for the Xmas
2007-12-24 00:32:00
I wasn’t supposed to go since I was saving up for a brand new laptop but I think I deserve a vacation. Sorry for being out of myself (yes I deleted the EntreCard post, as with cyberpunk’s suggestion). I’m stressed and depressed so I hope that the few hours I’ll be spending in Kyoto will bring me back to my senses. Anyway, wish me luck on this short trip–I’ll be back on the 26th for an exam at Oracle. I wish I had a camera to bring with me but I just broke my digital cam. While I’m out check out this interesting video of the Playstation emulator for the iPhone:   This is a screenshot of the working app. An installer for the PSX4iPhone is available on Installer.app, Check out the developer?s site for lots more info at: http://zodttd.com/wp/ [Via Iphone4world.com]

Boredom = Using WATIR on EntreCard
2007-12-23 00:00:00
I was a bit stressed after spending the finals hours of my OJT working on WATIR scripts for testing so I decided to play around. I looked for something I could automating scripts on and I thought, ‘Why not use it for EntreCard?’ To the newbie, WATIR (pronounced as WATER) stands for “Web Application Testing in Ruby”. Watir is an automated test tool which uses the Ruby scripting language to drive the Internet Explorer web browser. Watir is a toolkit for automated tests to be developed and run against a web browser. Non-developers can also benefit from using WATIR. You can use it to check your emails, delete spam, automatically download torrents (I have a ruby script for this one), etc. Interested yet? Using WATIR and/or Ruby in General can make your computing easier although I won’t be going into details of these just yet. I’ll reserve them for a future post. Note 1: This is what bored developers do when they have too much free time after hours of l...

Five Technology Disappointments in 2007
2007-12-19 00:00:00
I think 2007 was (and still is) a good year for technology-geeks. There’s a bunch of quality products blew us (and our pockets) away like the PSP Slim, the new Zune and iPod line and cool new laptops. For gamers, there’s Crysis, new free to play servers and more MMOs. For developers, there’s Silverlight, Air and Visual Studio 2008. With the number of stuff flooding the market, there’s bound to be some failure. And yes, while others seem to do everything right, there are those who are quite the opposite. 5. AMD and ATI Even with the merger, things still look grim for the two giants. For the whole year, we’ve been expecting that AMD will launch something worth buying. Sadly, that wait is still ongoing. On the processor side, AMD’s much awaited Barcelona-platform chips (the Phenom) were called back from shipping due to a processor-level bug and the expected market date was pushed back a few more months. On the GPU side, even with the release of A...

Guide to Programming Series: Week 3
2007-12-17 00:00:00
I’m a bit distracted as I was editing this (I’ve had the post ready for about a week which awaited minor changes) because I just got to view my grades today. Although it’s mostly 7.00 (Incomplete) I’m glad I don’t have to pay for tuition next school term. ^^ Finally I allocate my funds onto more uhm, personal stuff. A new computer, a new laptop… but before that I guess I’ll start answering positively to the job offers that have been coming my way. Also, I noted that Week 2’s series was too long. It probably bored everyone so I’ll snip things off to size so that it’ll be manageable for everyone. Now, on with the 3rd entry of my Guide to Programming Series , Writing a program. Whenever, on impulse, you decide to sit down and start writing a program, you’re likely to mess things up. In terms of cooking, it’s like doing it without a proper set of instructions and praying that the dish will turn out right. For si...

A new host and a new look
2007-12-17 00:00:00
I noticed that Atma Xplorer’s loading time in the past was a bit long (using fasterfox on Firefox Portable on several different PCs and locations). It was mainly due to the PNG images that my theme used as several unnecessary scripts (sql queries mainly) in the background. As you can see, I decided to go minimalist (yes, I know many people hate dark themes) to ease up on bandwidth (which I’m unlikely to go out of anytime soon unless I get digg-raped AGAIN) as well as to provide more focus on the articles rather than the look of the blog. There’s still a few tweaks I need to put up and I can’t do them yet since I’m posting this from the office (uh oh!) but rest assured that the posts will continue to come. ^^ If you’re interested, the theme I’m using is Hemingway Reloaded, the original didn’t support widgets so I chose the next best thing. New Host Thanks to kuya Dexter (kuya naman di ba?) for reminding me that our mutual friend super...
