Making the transition
2008-02-19 00:56:00
During the time where I went from my 8-5 job to working for myself full time, I found that the hardest part was the transition time where I had to get used to a completely different set of routines and objectives. Instead of having a rigorous schedule that I had to meet or else I ...

My Story, Part 2: How I Got My Motivation
2008-02-14 21:48:00
As you’ll recall from the last part of this story, I went from graduate to trying to have my own business to working for the University of Virginia in a cube farm. Soon after starting, the horror of cube farm work hit me full-on, and it was then that I instantly and permanently gained the ...

My Story, Part 1: From Graduate to Cube Farm Worker
2008-02-10 16:17:00
In May of 2007, on a bright and sunny day in the early afternoon, I walked across the stage in Darden Court at the University of Virginia and officially graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering. In the weeks and months following that day, I toyed with the idea of graduate school, and was ...

Just to let you know, I’m currently writing a feature that details my story from when I graduated from the University of Virginia all the way through where I am now, running two businesses and freelancing full-time. I’ll be releasing it in sections over a reasonable period of time so that I can put some ...

A Systems Commentary: Changing lanes (passing)
2007-10-08 18:01:00
When I was driving down the highway the other day, doing my best to not get into an accident while still maintaining reasonably fast (but still under the limit) speeds, I had a small spark of insight regarding systems engineering and the process by which people attempt to get ahead in traffic by passing each ...

Craigslist spam
2007-10-02 14:07:00
As I’ve been applying for jobs on the writing/editing front from craigslist, I’ve spotted a new scam and new spam. Craigslist spam is a curse for anyone applying for jobs, and they are becoming increasingly tricky and hard to pin down. This latest spam/scam comes from a website registered as ‘www.thefreelancejobs.com’. Do not go there. ...

Tip of the Day: September 25
2007-09-25 15:46:00
Today?s tips involves finding music online without using a peer-to-peer (P2P) filesharing program. A word of warning: I don?t condone copyright violation, but I leave it up to you to determine if what you do online crosses any boundaries you may or may not have up. With that said, read on to find out about ...

2007-09-24 15:11:00
Although it’s more of a bit of cool trivia than a ‘tip,’ today’s bit is about Google. You probably already know you can change the language of Google to just about any language in the world by clicking on the “Preferences” link on the Google main page, right? Did you know that some of the ...

Craigslist RSS Compilation: More job feeds
2007-09-22 23:11:00
I’ve added several more job feeds. As a reminder, these are collections of craigslist RSS feeds from across Amerca. So, for example, the Web/Info Design collection contains every web/info design job feed from every city on Craigslist in America (some 300 feeds per collection). I’ll be continuing to add more as the days go ...

2007-09-21 21:24:00

Systems Engineering: The Absence of Stupidity
2007-09-21 15:45:00
Two years ago, one of my professors at the University of Virgina summed up systems engineering in one simple sentence. He said “Systems engineering is an absence of stupidity.” He wasn’t only right, but in that statement he gave the most elegant and beautiful description that I’ve ever heard about what systems engineers do.

Blogrush
2007-09-21 14:42:00
I’ve decided to add a Blogrush widget to the left sidebar. The Blogrush website (and many non-affiliated forums online) claim that it’s a good way to get more traffic immediately. I’m skeptical, but I’ve decided to try it out. If you’d like to join Blogrush, click here. I’ll post updates if I see my traffic ...

Advertising
2007-09-20 22:48:00
I’ve been working like a madman today to try and advertise my blog on forums and websites and…well, anywhere I can, really. I’ve been displaying the craigslist rss feed link, and I’ve gotten 9 unique visitors today to the blog, 4 of which who went to that post, so I’m happy so far. That’s a ...

If you’re ever looking to purchase flowers - particularly roses - be sure to check out Sam’s Club. I know, Sam’s Club is the evil corporation, but their flower deals are killer good. It only costs $14 for two dozen roses (red, white, yellow, orange…any color), and the roses are of very high quality, too. ...

Craigslist RSS feeds
2007-09-19 21:53:00
I have, in one little easily-importable file, RSS feeds from the writing/editing section of every craigslist site in America. I use this combination of feeds to apply to jobs on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis. Would having these feeds available to download (for your personal use only, as per the craigslist TOS) be useful to ...

Reality in the Digital Age: A Blending of Two Worlds
2007-09-19 02:18:00
Boundaries that once separated the physical world from the virtual world are declining at an ever-increasing rate. Services such as Twitter and Facebook Mobile are allowing people to combine their physical and virtual lives into one globular heap. The resultant mishmash is a new reality that is a blending of two formerly distinct realities, and ...

Be More Productive: Thunderbird, Firefox, Filezilla and Pidgin
2007-09-17 20:48:00
Be More Productive is a weekly feature that goes into detail about different technologies that can be used to help you be more productive in your everyday life. ‘Technology ’ is a rather loose definition in this case, because it covers all types of technologies - not just computer technologies exclusively. To start off, though, I’m ...
