RDL Reports to Editable Documents: Feedback Needed
2007-11-12 21:46:00
Recently we have implemented a very important feature requested by many users, export of RDL reports to fully editable (flow layout) documents. The flow layout mode, which is now default for Aspose.Words for Reporting Services, brings a number of noticeable benefits such as: No textboxes anymore. Text is exported to regular paragraphs with real paragraph breaks. No floating objects, inline objects only. This means that when the document is edited, its contents move accordingly to the changes being applied, whereas floating (absolutely positioned) objects do not depend from each other when the contents are modified. Table row height is no more fixed and grows or shrinks when cell contents are added or removed. The document's look and feel is much more "natural", as if it was created by an office worker. It's been quite short since we released Aspose.Words for Reporting Services 2.0 that introduces this layout mode and we didn't receive much response yet. However, we are e...

Aspose.Words for Reporting Services 2.0.0.0 Released
2007-10-24 06:41:00
We are happy to announce the release of Aspose.Words for Reporting Services 2.0, the unique product that enables the export of Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services reports to Microsoft Word document formats. This release finally introduces a feature that has been expected by many users - export to flow layout documents! This means now you are able to convert RDL reports to "true", "normal", easy to edit documents as if they were created manually by an office worker! With the version 2.0 you can get documents that allow to insert paragraph breaks, contain tables crossing over pages that grow when adding contents, and so on.   Flow layout mode has been a research job and it still cannot guarantee the exact object positioning for some reports due to its nature. However, Aspose.Words for Reporting Services tries to convert reports as close to original design as possible. If you encounter any issues when exporting your reports in flow layout mode, please post it in the suppo...

How to Add Microsoft Word Export Formats to Visual Studio 2005 Report Desig
2007-10-10 03:07:00
It's a bit shameful but until recently I was almost sure that the Visual Studio 2005 Report Designer (Business Intelligence Development Studio) does not support custom rendering extensions and the export formats are hard coded :) Thanks to one of our customers, it turned out I was wrong. So, since Aspose.Word s for Reporting Services is a rendering extensions allowing to export RDL reports to Microsoft Word formats, you can easily add those formats directly to your report designer. Moreover, starting with the version 1.4.2.0, the MSI installer adds the formats automatically if it detects Visual Studio 2005 Report Designer on your machine. If you need to do that manually though, just follow these simple steps: Open the C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEPrivateAssemblies folder.  Copy Aspose.Words.ReportingServices.dll to that folder.  Locate two files in the folder: RSReportDesigner.config and RSPreviewPolicy.config and edit them exactly as you ...

Buzzword relies on Aspose.Words for Microsoft Word documents
2007-09-28 20:43:00
We are very excited about the fact that this awesome product uses Aspose.Word s for .NET to open and save documents. At the moment Buzzword  opens and saves DOC, RTF and WordprocessingML. These conversions are performed by Aspose.Words .dll on the server. http://www.virtub.com/ From the Virtual Ubiquity website: "Buzzword, the first real word processor for the web, is a breakthrough in collaborative authoring for documents that matter." Our recent release Aspose.Words for .NET 4.4 supports export to Office Open XML that means you can expect Save As DOCX will be available in Buzzword in the near future. We are also working on DOCX import as well as support for Open Office (ODT) documents. Hopefully, this all will make its way into Buzzword. This shows a Microsoft Word DOC document loaded into Buzzword.

Aspose.Words for Java API Reference now with code examples!
2007-09-28 00:28:00
We have finally added code examples to the Aspose.Words for Java API Reference . Check it out, here is a page for the Body class http://www.aspose.com/Products/Aspose.Wor ds/Api/index.html?url=com/aspose/words/Bo dy.html And of course I cannot resist not to tell you how cool our system for documentation generation is. Code examples are initially written in C# and arranged as unit tests in a class library. We compile and run the examples project to make sure all works and passes (you don't see the actual unit testing asserts in the final cut out). We tag the code in examples with special comments, such as //ExStart, //ExEnd, //ExFor:class.member, //ExSummary:text etc. We use a C# to VB.NET converter (in fact, this one http://www.tangiblesoftwaresolutions.com/ ) to create a VB.NET copy of the examples. Then, we closely port C# examples to Java. This is possible because Aspose.Words for .NET and Java APIs are virtually the same. Finally, we use our own tools that cut example co...

New sample: Word2Help - a tool to split DOC file into HTML topics
2007-09-14 05:03:00
We have turned a utility we use at Aspose in building of our product documentation into a public source code sample. It is available for download here http://www.aspose.com/Community/File s/51/ aspose.words/entry94733.aspx Here is some info: We author documentation in Microsoft Word and then use Word2Help to: Split DOC file(s) into topics according to Heading styles. Save each topic into a separate HTML file and export images into files. Fix hyperlinks so the hyperlinks that were internal in a single DOC file continue to work across multiple HTML files. Inject a predefined HTML header, banner and footer. Write an XML file that describes the tree of topics. The resulting HTML files and content.xml are then used by Aspose.NDoc (a modified version of NDoc) to produce HTML and CHM documentation. Here is an example of the documentation where Word2Help was used: http://www.aspose.com/Products/Aspose.Wor ds/Api/index.html Original blog post ab...

RDL + HTML = AWesome Reports!
2007-09-06 05:25:00
We often stress that the development of our products is customer-driven. This means we respond to customer requests quickly and exhaustively, making customers feel as if they directly participated in development. This cooperation is mutually beneficial and sometimes results in brilliant ideas indeed. Yesterday I had a conversation with a customer whose requirement was exporting RDL reports to Microsoft Word documents. The problem was that he wanted his reports to have quite a lot inline formatting, that is to format text differently within the same textbox. Some thing like this: Some of this text is bold and other text is italic. As you know, even such a basic formatting is not supported in Reporting Services. The whole text within a textbox can only have the same formatting. So since this is by design, the problem seems unsolvable? ?unless you have the latest Aspose.Words for Reporting Services 1.4.1.0 installed. Yes, we did come up with some solution and im...

Aspose.Words for Reporting Services 1.4.1.0 Released
2007-09-06 05:08:00
This release introduces a very interesting feature. Now you can enable a special mode that will instruct the renderer to understand HTML text hosted within textboxes! This allows to apply different inline formatting such as bold or italic within the same textbox. Moreover, you can insert almost any HTML you wish! Of course, this feature won't work in design time as well as in the formats exported by rendering extensions other than Aspose.Words for Reporting Services . However, if you want to export rich formatted reports to Microsoft Word documents, this new feature is exactly what you need. What's New Added the EnableHTMLFormatting configuration option. Configuration options can now be enclosed directly into the <Configuration> element rather than into the <DeviceInfo> element. For backward compatibility purposes both methods are supported.
