Panasonic Announces Ultra-thin Blu-ray Drive for Notebooks
2007-12-30 16:01:00 Panasonic says the thinnest Blu-ray drive ever made will be on display at CES 2008 in January Ardent road warriors are always on the lookout for smaller, thinner and lighter notebook computers. With Blu-ray movies becoming more commonplace the same road warriors are also looking to systems with Blu-ray drives as well. The problem with Blu-ray drives is that the typical Blu-ray drive for notebooks is about 0.5 inches thick. The typical standard DVD drive for a notebook is only 0.28 inches thick. This represents almost twice the heft for the Blu-ray drive compared to the standard DVD drive. Panasonic announced a new ultra-thin Blu-ray drive aimed at notebook computers and UMPC systems that measures in at only 0.37 inches thick. This new drive is capable of reading Blu-ray discs and writing to Blu-ray media as well. The thin drive will also read and write to standard DVD and CD media. InformationWeek reports Toshiba will have an equally thin HD DVD drive as well. While Blu-ray... More About: Drive , Ultra , Notebooks , Panasonic

Consumers will be greeted with an ATI RS600ME northbridge and an SB600 southbridge. The GPU to be used will be an ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 with 256MB of HyperMemory which can be paired with either a traditional CCFL or LED-backlit 12.1" WXGA display. Magnetic Storage Breakthrough Wins Scientists Nobel Prize in Physics
2007-10-14 13:40:00 Nobel Prize awarded for discovery in magnetic storage breakthrough made in 1970s The Nobel Prize is synonymous to many with developments and inventions that revolutionize a particular field. This year the Nobel Prize in Physics has gone to French scientist Albert Fert and German Peter Grünberg. The pair won the 2007 Nobel Prize for physics for their discovery of the phenomenon of ?giant magnetoresistance,? or GMR. This phenomenon is where weak changes in magnetic resistance give rise to big differences in electrical resistance. This is one of the core principles that allows for the development of sensitive reading tools for retrieving magnetically sorted data in devices from computers to portable media players. The Nobel Foundation regards Fert and Grunberg's accomplishment as "one of the first major applications of nanotechnology." BBC News quotes Professor Ben Murdin of the University of Surrey, UK, as saying, ?Without [giant magnetoresistance] you wo... More About: Storage , Auto , Scientists , Wins
Honda Hybrid Sports Car Concept Recalls The Bemoaned CRX
2007-10-14 13:36:00 Honda revives the CRX's spirit with a small hybrid concept In early February, DailyTech first brought you news that Honda was working on a small sports car to take some of the "green" spotlight that has been hogged by the Toyota Prius since 2000. Honda later unveiled the vehicle as the Small Hybrid Sports Concept (SHSC) in March. The radical-looking concept was powered by an efficient 4-cylinder engine, Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system and paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The SHSC's powertrain was rather conventional, but its design was a bit too far reaching to be taken seriously as a production model. Honda is at again and today showcased a new small hybrid sports car in the form of the CR-Z. The CR-Z recalls the lightweight CRX hatchback and features more production-worthy styling than the SHSC. Honda simply describes the CR-Z as a "design research model of a lightweight hybrid sports car," and notes that the powertrain ... More About: Honda , Auto

Apple, AT&T Sued for iBricking, Monopolistic Behavior
2007-10-13 18:03:00 The consumers are bringing the fight to Apple Inc. Cupertino-based Apple Inc. has been busy writing firmware to lock the iPhones and iPod Touches from third party applications and unlocking. Now after trying to put out one literal iFire, as predicted in a previous DailyTech article, Apple Inc. has found itself the target of not one, but two separate lawsuits seeking class action status.Apparently Apple's answer to owners of frozen iPhones that they should ?buy a new phone? did not go over well. One lawsuit was filed at the state level by Saratoga attorney Damian Fernandez, who is representing California resident Timothy Smith. The federal suit was filed by the offices of Hoffman & Lazear in Oakland and Folkenflik & McGerity in New York, on behalf of two individuals Paul Holman and Lucy Rivello; both iPhone owners. The federal case accuses Apple of unfair business practices, violations of antitrust laws, violations of telecommunications laws and violations of wa... RIAA Case Juror Speaks: 2 Jurors Wanted $3.6M Fine
2007-10-13 18:00:00 It turns out that Jammie Thomas could have been worse off The tech news industry has been buzzing with news of the $222,000 verdict in the precedent setting civil case Capitol Records v. Jammie Thomas, the first instance of an RIAA complaint going to a trial by jury. Now a juror from the case has opened up and discussed their feelings about the case and what went on inside the courtroom. While some may feel the $9,250 per song fine levied against Thomas was extreme and unreasonable, she could have been far worse off, if a couple of the jurors had their way.In an interview with THREAT LEVEL on Tuesday, Michael Hegg, one of the jurors from the case, reported that two jurors had tried to sway the other jurors to adopt the maximum fine per violation, $150,000 per piece of copyrighted material. As Thomas was found guilty of 24 such violations, this would have resulted in a $3.6 million fine.Another juror, according to Hegg, was insistent on making the fine as low as possible. More articles from this author:2007-10-13 17:50:00 NeoSmart goes over SP3's new features News on Microsoft's aging Windows XP operating system has surprisingly been coming in at a steady pace over the past few weeks. Although Windows Vista is Microsoft's current bread-and-butter consumer operating system, there is still much love to go around for Windows XP. In late September, DailyTech reported that Microsoft is providing XP downgrades for unhappy Vista customers. Microsoft followed up on that news a few days later with the announcement that Windows XP sales would be extended to June 30, 2008. The company followed up with a new build of Internet Explorer 7.0 for Windows XP that doesn't require product activation and released a Service Pack 3 (SP3) beta for a select group of testers. The latest SP3 beta is labeled as build 3205 and is a rather small 334.92 MB download. The bloggers over at NeoSmart have gotten a hold of the new SP3 release and have detailed many of the new features and bugfixes with the softwar...
