Apple iPhone Dissected
2007-07-01 11:51:00 Hours after launch, the iPhone stripped of all parts Apple unleashed the iPhone on the general public only hours ago and it has already been dissected. With a heat gun and razor blade, tech guru Anand Lal Shimpi was able to strip the Apple iPhone of its brushed aluminum cover and reveal its innards. Inside the iPhone, there are the usual GSM and WiFi antennas, battery, camera and tape.Apple makes use of two PCBs in a sandwich configuration ? each tightly packed with chips. Apple equips the iPhone with Samsung MLC NAND flash memory and an ARM processor. The ARM processor was manufacture by Samsung, but has an Apple logo printed on it. AnandTech believes the Apple branded ARM processor may be the Samsung S3C6400 derived from an ARM1176 core. The iPhone?s multi-touch screen consists of multiple layers. On the layer closest to the motherboard, Apple lays down faint dots in a grid-like pattern. The dot grid is necessary for the multi-touch screen, apparently. After dissection, AnandT... Apple Employees to Get Free iPhones
2007-07-01 11:44:00 Apple to give free 8GB iPhone to all full-time employees Every job has its perks, but the perk from Jobs for Apple employees will soon be making many outsiders green with envy. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said at a company town hall meeting that all full-time employees, and part-time employees with the company for at least a year, will receive a free 8GB iPhone, reports Think Secret. While the phone launches today, Apple employees will have to wait until the rabid consumer demand is satisfied. The free iPhones will not be delivered until late July. According to Apple?s last annual report, the company employs 17,787 full-time workers. Getting a $600 phone for free is a sweet pick-up, though it is unclear if the deal comes with any strings attached. Consumers looking to own an iPhone will have to sign up for a two-year rate plan at a minimum of $59.99 a month ? plus other fees ? tagging on over $1,400 in additional charges over the cost of the hardware itself. PlayStation 3 Production Problems Have Ceased, Says Sony
2007-07-01 11:35:00 Sony's PlayStation 3 now "in full production"In late April, word from Sony was that its production of blue-violet laser diodes had ramped up to 1.7 million units monthly. The blue-violet laser diode, a critical component in Blu-ray Disc optical drives, is largely cited as the reason for the limited production capacity and delayed European launch of the PlayStation 3. With the blue-violet laser diode shortage out of the way, Sony says that its PlayStation 3 console is finally in full production. ?Production problems have now ceased, we're in full production as far as PlayStation 3 is concerned and there's a steady chain of supply in North America, Japan and Europe,? a Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. spokesperson said, as recorded by Compound Semiconductor. In fact, with production woes out of the way, Sony is confident that the PlayStation 3 ? with its myriad of multimedia functions ? will be able to match the company?s success with the PlayStation 2. ?We're aiming towar... Print pictures without a computer or printer
2007-06-30 10:05:00 Did you know you can print out all your digital images even if you don't own a printer or a computer? Many photo processing labs, drug stores and camera stores have user-friendly kiosks that feature a printer with a computer. Simply insert your camera's media (xD, SmartMedia, or CompactFlash) into the dedicated slot and follow the easy steps on the computer to print them out in various sizes. These kiosks typically include easy-to-use features for cropping and editing your images, too, so you can get exactly the photo you want, and in just a matter of minutes. If you have a computer but don't have printer, you're still in luck. There are a number of online photo services that allow you to upload your images and even store them on their site for free. Using their site you can then order photo-quality prints of your photos and have them delivered right to your door, or you can send a link to a friend or family member of your online album from which they can se... 2007-06-30 10:02:00 Some great deals exist right now on new and used cars as dealers clear out old inventory and make room for new models. But one major expense consumers often overlook in buying a new car is the cost of insuring it. A car's make and model can greatly influence what you pay for coverage. Many consumers never check with their insurer before buying a car, and they often fail to shop around for the best rates, according to the Kansas City-based National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Evolutional Mobile Entertainment
2007-06-29 10:40:00 In the 21st century, humans can not live without technology. However most gadgets are cold and lack vitality. The missing element is something called ?evolutionary possibility?, a way to add a more abstract humanistic approach to how electronic gadgets are used and grow. Currently people already enjoy the many functions a singular device has but if that device could some how evolve in a natural, esoteric way, the gratification from using those functions would increase. The EME designed by Shao Wei Huang takes that approach in designing a mobile device queued for video, music, and gaming. A dual screen setup is used in tandem to fit whatever function is currently being used. One screen is embedded on the outer shell. The other slides out from underneath. Used singularly, the shell displays functions for calling and basic manipulation of data such as contacts, photos, etc. Sliding out the second screen lets you access secondary data. Turning the whole unit sideways turns it into a por... More About: Mobile , Entertainment , Cell Phones , Mobi , Entertain
Cellphone Inspired
2007-06-29 06:40:00 As flexible displays come to market, designers are asked how they can design products that utilize the technology while remaining meaningful. Yun Liang?s scroll cellphone takes its inspiration from how traditional Chinese paintings are unfurled. When not in use, the display neatly rolls into the tube. All numeric key functions remain tactile running along the side of the scroll as opposed to touchscreen. This makes it possible to use without having to unroll the screen. You would only do so when accessing media and data. Designer: Yun Liang More About: Cell Phones , Cellphone , Inspire , Inspired
S-series - Sleek, Sophisticated Mobile Phone
2007-06-29 06:37:00 Today?s range of phones leaves a lot to be desired in terms of design, the aim of the game being to cram as many functions as possible into a lumpy box of endless buttons. The S-series however steps back from this approach and sets off in a radically different design direction by combining sleek, sophisticated styling with top quality materials all put together in a compact package, to make the whole experience of looking at and owning the phone just as pleasurable as using it. The phone is aimed at people who want to stand out and make a statement, without compromising on features. Designed in such a way that almost every key feature, from using the camera to making and receiving calls, is easily operated without the need to flip out the keypad and waste time. Nintendo, Sony Will Not Accept "Adults Only" Games
2007-06-23 13:48:00 AO-rated Manhunt 2 would be unacceptable to Nintendo and Sony Nintendo tried with the Game Cube to shed its image of being a video games system strictly for children by promoting games such as Resident Evil 4. With the widespread success and family appeal of the Wii, Nintendo may be facing another challenge on coming up with the appropriate mix of games for the mature crowd and everyone else. While Nintendo may be hoping that its developers make mature games for the Wii, it may be getting more than it bargained for with Rockstar Games ? Manhunt 2. In what could be the game with the most controversy stirred before release, Manhunt 2 is already banned from sale and distribution in the UK, recently also banned in Ireland, and is tentatively rated as AO for adults only by the U.S.-based ESRB. Although AO-rated games are legally sellable in North America, the approval processes of Nintendo and Sony do not allow such games to appear on its systems. Manhu... More About: Ames
