Seinfeld cooks with honey at film fest
2007-05-21 00:00:00
Jerry Seinfeld ’s high-flying stunt to create buzz for his animated “Bee Movie” is going be a hard act to top - even at the Cannes Film Fest ival, where the sight of topless starlets once was enough to stop traffic. Cannes Film Festival: The comic, wearing an outlandish bee costume, flew from the roof of the Carlton hotel, eight stories up, across the street to the hotel dock on wires. His human arms and legs flapped in a ridiculously spastic way as the phone cameras buzzed. Chris Rock, Seinfeld’s “Bee Movie” co-star and buddy, proclaimed: “He’s insane.” Then Seinfeld flew back up on the wires and did it again. Rock, who voices a mosquito in the flick, wasn’t about to join Seinfeld on the roof. “My mosquito suit got caught up in customs,” he said, adding that Seinfeld is a “thrill freak.” “He skydives and bungee jumps. I tell jokes for a living,”...

Cannes Film festival features two Lebanese directors
2007-05-21 00:00:00
Despite the political turmoil that has paralyzed Lebanon's economy, Lebanese filmmakers Nadine Labaki and Danielle Arbid have paved their way to the Director's Fortnight section of the upcoming 60th Cannes Film festival. Another section, Tous Les Cinemas Du Monde, will showcase a day- long, mini festival of Lebanese films to illustrate the country's cinematic strength and the role of history in domestic film production. Directors Nadine Labaki and Danielle Arbid earned the privilege for their films Caramel (Sukar Banat) and Un homme perdu (A lost man). Labaki (pictured right), a well-known actress and music video director, finished her feature film Caramel, a comedy, just nine days before Israel launched its 33-day war against Lebanon on July 12, 2006. 'In a sense, I wanted the Israeli people to see the film and understand what kind of people we are,' Labbaki was quoted as saying. 'Caramel' tells the story of five Lebanese women from different generations and religious b...

Sydney
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Overview Sydney belongs to the exclusive club of world cities that generate a sense of excitement from the air. Even at the end of a marathon flight across the Pacific, there's renewed vitality in the cabin as the plane circles the city, crossing the branching fingers of the harbor, where thousands of yachts are suspended on the dark water and the sails of the Opera House glisten in the distance. Endowed with dazzling beaches and a sunny Mediterranean climate, its setting alone guarantees Sydney a place among the most beautiful cities on the planet. At 4 million people, Sydney is the biggest and most cosmopolitan city in Australia. Take a taxi from Sydney Airport and chances are that the driver won't say "G'day" with the accent you might expect. A wave of immigration in the 1950s has seen the Anglo-Irish immigrants who made up the city's original population enriched by Italians, Greeks, Turks, Lebanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thais, and Indonesians. This intermingling has created...
American Idol..Jordin Sparks - Blake Lewis
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Americanidol.com's James Pumphrey was able to squeeze in an interview with Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis despite the whirlwind it's been for both of them since getting into the finale. James delves deep into the hometown visits with both of them to find out what they really thought about the emotional day. He also finds out how they think they've changed since taking on the frenzied life of an American Idol contestant. Considering a record deal is most likely a sure thing for the both of them, James also gets the skinny on what type of album they'd like to make, and even coins a new term for the genres--for Blake, it's "electro-alt-funk-pop," and for Jordin, it's "Jordin Pop," which is a mixture of a bunch of different genres. -http://www.americanidol.com/news/view/?p id=885

San Antonio Spurs Silence Utah Jazz in Game 2
0000-00-00 00:00:00
The Spurs made sure on Tuesday that the road to the NBA Finals continued to go through San Antonio. After a convincing Game 1 win over Utah , the Spurs followed it up with a 105-96 Game 2 victory over the Jazz , as they maintained their home-court advantage with a 2-0 series lead. Tim Duncan had another magnificent performance as he tallied 26 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. Carlos Boozer exploded for a game-high 33 points to go along with 15 rebounds, but was the only Utah player at the half in double figures. Deron Williams had another late-game surge as he scored 19 of his 26 points in the second half, bringing the Jazz within seven in the fourth quarter. Bruce Bowen drilled a series of treys in the fourth, scoring all nine of his points in the final period to silence Utah's rally. Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker each poured in 17 points. Parker also dished out a playoff career-high 14 assists. The Jazz hope a change of scenery will turn the series around as they host Sa...

NBA Playoffs : Steve Nash Interview
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Steve NashThe San Antonio Spurs beat the Suns 121-114 to take Game 1 of the 2004-05 NBA Western Conference finals. Here's what Phoenix point guard and league MVP Steve Nash said after the game: Q: Mike D'Antoni suggested maybe you guys didn't fight through fatigue to the point of exhaustion, that's what champions do? STEVE NASH: I think he's right. I think we maybe let that -- I just think that we kind of let fatigue affect us mentally. I think we lost our concentration. I think we lost our fight just for enough stretches to lose the game. We did an incredible job of gaining it in the third quarter and getting a lead. And then I thought when things got a little hard we kind of didn't quite dig deep enough. It's tough. It was a tough situation, but these are the situations I think that we have to learn our lessons through and realize what it does take to make the difference between being a contender and a champion. Q: Was the biggest effect because of the fatigue, biggest e...

Heroes DVD dated
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Season one of Hiro, Claire, Peter and the rest of the superfriends is coming home on August 28 on DVD, HD-DVD. Fans of Hero es are looking toward the season finale of the show with both anticipation and trepidation. On the plus side, the show will likely answer the question that has plagued viewers since the pilot aired last September: "Will the 'Heroes' be able to save New York City?" "Ohhh! If only I had a way to go to August 28 now!" On the negative side, it means no more new episodes until the fall as the series takes a break. However, Heroes fans won't have to spend the summer sewing up a new cape and matching tights, blogging about conspiracy theories, and trying to bend spoons with one's mind to get their fix. Universal Studios Home Entertainment today announced that the first season of Heroes will be released on DVD and HD-DVD on August 28, as previously leaked. The seven-disc set will feature all 23 episodes from the first season, as well as a wealth of extras. The ...

IN COMPETITION: "PERSEPOLIS" BY MARJANE SATRAPI AND VINCENT PARONNAUD
0000-00-00 00:00:00
This is a year of many firsts for Persepolis co-directors Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud. Their first feature-length film has won them their first In-Competition selection at the Cannes Festival. The team has come to the Croisette with an animated film which, as a first feature, is also in the running for a Golden Camera award. Adapted from the Satrapi's original graphic novel, based on her own life, the action in this animated feature begins in Tehran in 1978, on the eve of the Islamic Revolution. We look on as Marjane, the eight-year-old heroine, dreams first of becoming a prophet and saving the world, and then, once the Islamic Republic is established, of overthrowing it. During the Iran-Iraq war, Marjane's parents send her to Austria to keep her out of harm's way. That's where Marjane lives through her second revolution: adolescence, freedom, and lovesickness, but also exile, loneliness, and being different. On how the film project got started, Marjane Satrapi comm...

Hawai'i : Big Island
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Overview Although development has run wild on the Big Island as of late, it manages to maintain an Old Hawai'i feel, with tourism concentrated on its sunny northwest coast. From its active volcano seeping lava into the ocean to its white-sand beaches and its verdant green valleys, waterfalls, and rainbows, the Big Island delivers everything the postcards promise and then some. Sea turtles and manta rays make their homes here, and Mark Twain wrote some of his best prose in the moonlike southern region. Long after his death, artists, travelers, and locals continue to seek inspiration from the cliffs, lava, hidden valleys, ancient wisdom, and tranquil waters of Hawai'i. The Big Island is indeed big, and the largest of the Islands by far at 4,038 square miles. Even with recent development, the Big Island's population remains low (163,000), and only 2% of the island's 2.57 million acres is classified as urban. Hotels Overview Hotel prices are for two people in a standard double roo...
Britney Has Tarmac Tantrum
0000-00-00 00:00:00
New York Post reported Britney Spears flipped again - ranting about the lack of leather seats on her United Airlines flight from L.A. to Miami Friday night, and demanding to be let off minutes before takeoff . “She just said, ‘I don’t want to fly on this plane. It hasn’t got leather seats,’ ” passenger Tony Sanchez told Splash News. The captain accommodated, later apologizing to passengers. “He said a passenger wanted to get off so he had to respect their wishes. He didn’t say it was Britney Spears.” Sanchez said. “Some people were getting really annoyed.” Spears’ flacks didn’t return calls. The star was due to perform at the House of Blues in Orlando last night, and in South Beach today. -http://britneyspears.hollywood.com/

Britney caught lip syncing
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Britney Spears was left red-faced during a 14-minute concert in Florida on Saturday night when her backing tape skipped revealing once and for all the pop superstar is lip syncing her comeback. The Toxic singer was performing her return show at Orlando’s House of Blues when the incident happened, forcing the singer to look away as technicians raced to get the tape back on track. The pop star and her M+M’s dancers took to the stage at 9.30pm local time to perform for the sell-out crowd, and opened the show with her classic …Baby One More Time. Unlike the series of concerts she performed at House of Blues venues in California and Las Vegas earlier in May, this show didn’t go quite to plan. But despite the brief musical mishap, Spears looked like she was having great fun onstage. She ended the set with a shortened Toxic and then parted after telling the crowd, “Thank you so much for being here. You’re awesome. I love you!” As Wenn went to pre...

And you can use London as your home base to set out on day trips to other more exotic locations or buy a Eurorail pass and see those more remote countries without the expense of flying there.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Belize is an appealing destination, with wonderful Caribbean beaches and a lush tropic setting, but since it has only recently emerged as a popular travel destination, it is more expensive than Cancun, Jamaica or other well-traveled locations along the Mayan Riviera. With fewer flights, getting there is more expensive, and there are few moderate lodging options. Development of larger luxury resorts have begun to boom, but the only real alternative for those on a budget is staying in local facilities that may be hard to locate from home and may be more rustic than most travelers are willing to try. Although there are many options for affordable vacations in the Caribbean, an excellent pick is Playa del Carmen , Mexico . Accessible via flights to Cancun, which are often some of the cheapest in the region, Playa is just a half hour away. It is filled with a multitude of lodging choices, from expansive luxury resorts on the ocean to quaint but clean hotels downtown. From Playa, travelers ...
Tioman Island
0000-00-00 00:00:00
An affordable yet exotic choice for Asia is Malaysia and specifically Tioman Island , knows as the mythical 'Bali Hai' from the film 'South Pacific.’ Tioman Island is located at the southern end of the east coast of Malaysia on the South China Sea. It’s sandy beaches, bordered by lush jungles and stunning mountains make it a relaxing yet intriguing destination, ideal for sun lovers, snorkelers and divers. The island also has many villages for exploring and shopping. English is widely spoken and the rates are amazingly affordable, with a two night lodging package for a suite at a lovely oceanside resort averaging around 100 U.S. dollars. Typically visitors reach the island via the speed ferry from the mainland. Although the trip can take over two hours, it is enjoyable and provides opportunities for dolphin watching along the way.
Buenos Aires
0000-00-00 00:00:00
South American also has many destinations that are affordable because of the savings once you arrive. Locales like Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the areas top destination, are coming down in price but are still more expensive than cities such as Buenos Aires in Argentina, where the rates are lower and the U.S. dollar goes further. A huge metropolis that is more European than South American, the city has much to offer including cultural events, thriving nightlife, shopping, local sports, and a host of tours and excursions. La Boca, with its street performers, shops, and unique architecture is a big tourist draw. The large number of choices for lodging, restaurants, and activities provides opportunities for budget travel and savings. Airfare to the city is relatively reasonable for an international destination, with discount fares from the U.S. averaging around $500 round trip. Buenos Aires might not be one of the most exotic or inspiring destinations in South America, but it is a city t...
Las Vegas
0000-00-00 00:00:00
The list would not be complete without a North American destination, and the champ of all affordable locales is Las Vega s . It too is a city that should be seen at least once, and many world travelers return again and again for the gaming, art, shows and people watching that just can’t be found anywhere else. Close enough to other top U.S. attractions like the Grand Canyon, Vegas provides other options for those who have had their fill of casinos. The city has long been known for its cheap vacation packages with hotels and resorts that offer discount rates for rooms, meals and entertainment in hopes of attracting people to their gaming tables. Airfare rates into Vegas are some of the most reasonable in the United States, no matter the origination destination. And with more than 100,000 hotel rooms to choose from, there is sure to be a lodging choice that fits your budget. The world provides hundreds of affordable travel destinations. Amsterdam
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Amsterdam Amsterdam isn't hard to get to grips with even if you arrive there cold. The local tourist organization, VVV Amsterdam, prides itself on being able to answer any conceivable travel question that any conceivable traveler might have, excepting only those that are illegal or of doubtful moral worth (this being Amsterdam, both of these concepts have a lot of built-in elasticity). The city is foreign, of course, but not impossibly so, one reason being that so many Dutch speak English. Amsterdam has as many facets as a 40-carat diamond polished by one of the city's gem cutters: the capital, and spiritual "downtown," of a nation ingrained with the principles of tolerance; a veritable Babylon of old-world charm; a font for homegrown geniuses such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh; a cornucopia bursting with parrot tulips and other greener -- more potent -- blooms; and a unified social zone that takes in cozy bars, archetypal "brown" cafés, and outdoor markets. While impressive ga...

Spanish travel options by region
