Cancer-busters tap into grid computing
2007-11-08 21:10:00 Canadian researchers have promised to squeeze “decades” of cancer research into just two years by harnessing the power of a global PC grid.. The research team is led by Dr Igor Jurisica at the Ontario Cancer Institute, and scientists at Princess Margaret Hospital and University Health Network. The scientists are the first from Canada to use IBM’s World Community Grid network of PCs and laptops with the power equivalent to one of the globe’s top five fastest supercomputers. The team will use the grid to analyse the results of experiments on proteins using data collected by scientists at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo, New York. The researchers estimate that this analysis would take conventional computer systems 162 years to complete. Estimates: Radiohead Made $6-$10 Million on Initial Album Sales
2007-10-20 22:26:00 Thom Yorke’s representative told me that the band have “decided not to give out any figures” for sales of Radiohead ’s In Rainbows album, but that isn’t stopping people from making their best guesses based on what little information is available. The Seminal estimates that Radiohead sold about $10 million-worth of albums as of 10/12, assuming that their source was correct that approximately 1.2 million people downloaded the album from the site, and that the average price paid per album was $8 (we heard that number too, but also heard that a later, more accurate average was $5, which would result in $6 million revenue instead). Meanwhile, Forbes and BigChampagne revealed that on the first day the album was available, 240K people downloaded it for free over BitTorrent, and that over the following days an average of 100K people per day did the same, for a total of over 500K BitTorrent downloads over the initial week of its release. Users get upset enough when come-ons for Viagra slip through the cracks of the Microsoft-owned service. But there’s just as much hell to pay when its war on spam snuffs out legitimate emails. In May, we reported on a proprietary Microsoft technology dubbed SmartScreen, which secretly blocked Hotmail-destined email from entire domains - even when they were a year or more old and were correctly listed in the DNS and had solid SPF records. Now we’re fielding reader tips that Hotmail has placed Draconian limits on the number of Hotmail recipients who can receive an email. The first 10 Hotmail addresses included in a mass email go through just fine, according to these reports.
